Where to store my ITunes Library?

Hi,
I was wondering how i find out where my ITunes Library is stored? and if it's possible to move it? All my MP3's are stored on a NAS drive on my home network. can i then point other systems at that library?
Thanks

I was wondering how i find out where my ITunes Library is stored?
Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and find the music folder's location.
if it's possible to move it?
Click here and follow the instructions, or drag the iTunes folder in the Music item of the Finder's sidebar to the NAS followed by launching iTunes with the Option key held down and pointing it there.
can i then point other systems at that library?
Yes. Note that moving only the Music folder will require that the music be reimported on the other computers each time more music is added.

How can I store my iTunes library on an NAS (Fritz Box)?

    1. Drag the library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there.
    2. Get a second. Having the backups on the same drive as the original data won't help when that drive fails.

  • I store my itunes library on an external drive shared between 2 computers and itunes on computer A isn't seeing or showing the songs I added using itunes on computer B.

I store my itunes library on an external drive shared between 2 computers and itunes on computer A isn't seeing or showing the songs I added using itunes on computer B. How to fix this?

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Can I use an external hard drive to download and store my iTunes library?

Can I use an external hard drive to download and store my iTunes library?

Yes - in most cases you can just copy your entire library (by default C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes) to your external drive, with the result being a iTunes folder in the root of that drive with a structure like this:
Then hold down SHIFT when you start iTunes, and when you see this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to the iTunes folder on your external drive, and click Open.  See turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for more information, including steps you may need to take to align your library structure before moving it to an external drive - this applies if you currently have some/all of the media in your library stored outside the standard iTunes Media folders.

  • Is it possible to store your itunes library in two separate locations?

I currently have my entire iTunes library on a My Passport external hard-drive but I would also like to store my iTunes library on a separate My Book external hard-drive. The My Book is 2TB and I essentially wanted to store the movies on that external; not necessarily the movies and music currently in iTunes. Is there a way I can keep my iTunes library on the My Passport but also have it on the My Book external hard-drive as well?

Move one of the folders in the iTunes library to the external drive in the Finder, and with iTunes not running, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Enter the following:
    ln -s
The l in the command is a lowercase L. Drag the folder on the external drive into the Terminal window followed by the folder on the laptop drive. Next, drag the folder on the laptop drive to the desktop in the Finder and press Enter in the Terminal window. Reopen iTunes and verify that everything works properly; when this has been done, delete the original folder from the laptop drive's desktop.

  • If I use my iPad to store my iTunes library, can I update my iPod through the iPad?  Or must I keep iTunes on a PC to serve as a hub for updating iPad and iPod?

Just got an iPad.  My plan was to store my iTunes library on iPad and update iPod through the iPad.  Can I do that, or must i keep the library on a PC to serve as hub for all updating?

  • I am getting rid of the computer where I currently store my iTunes library.    I want to transfer all of my music to my iPad or to another computer.  What is the easiest way to do that?

How doi transfer my itunes library?

Thank you deggie to answer me . You know, I don't know much of computers and of technology but when I bought that ipod back when  they came out 2005 I was able to download music from my CDs and from Youtube to itunes then transfer to my ipod and back and forth to itunes .  Then if I had changed of computer I was able to transfer to that new computer. Why I'm not able to do it ? There is a program(Sharepod) that allow to do that but it cost $35.00 but I thought that was free or it is because that now I have to buy from itunes only?

  • TS1277 Where is our original iTunes library?

    Hi
We recently moved from Australia to US.  Our iTunes library was created in Australia, through the Australian iTunes store.
Now we have bought new music and when we try to psynch iPod, the message ' this iPod is psyched to another iTunes library' and the choices we have are: Erase and Psynch OR Transfer Purchases.  Erase and Psynch will erase everything on iPod and replace with the 20 odd songs purchased in US, so we dont want that!  Do we want 'Transfer Purchases?  The way it is written is confusing.
The other problem is we cant see the extensive music list we purchased in Australia.  The library only shows the music purchased here in US.
To add more confusion, our account still shows as the 'region' of Australia so we dont understand why another library has been created.
We did change Apple ID passwords so that our devices would psynch.  Would that have screwed things up?
We really want our original library back and can go without the 20 odd songs purchased here - if anyone can shed some light we would be grateful!
    thank you

Or, if you've been opening alternate libraries and are no longer sure exactly which one is the current library, try my script iTunesXMLPath which tells you where the active XML file is. The active library is the most recently modified ITL file in the same folder.

  • How many computers can I store my iTunes library on?

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that I can put my iTunes library on up to five different computers. Since I first created my library, I've had to change laptops a few times (changed companies, laptop stolen, etc).
Can I keep downloading iTunes software to my new laptop, and transfering my songs into the libary (backed up on external hard drive)? Or will I run into a limit?
I only need one, perhaps two, laptops to actively use the library. So if there's a limit on how many active laptops you can have, I'm not sure how to make an old laptop unactive.
    Thanks.

You can put the music on as many computers as you want. However, you can only use it on 5 "active" computers max at one time.
You cannot individually unauthorize computers you no longer have.

  • Can I use icloud to store my iTunes library music in order to free up storage/usage space on my iPhone?

Can I use icloud to store my iTunes music library in order to free up usage space on my iPhone and iPad?

iTunes match is a true streaming service when it comes to playback from your PC. That means, you can load everything into the cloud and stream from the cloud to your PC.
To an iPhone or iPad, it's stream-and-save, meaning it will download and play immediately, but it will be saved to the device.
So yes, you can load everything up (assuming it all loads properly without problems) and stream to your PC.

  • Where'd my other iTunes library go?

My 10-year-old got an iTouch for Christmas and I needed to set it up on my computer, which was already home to my own iTouch. I read the Apple support topic on how to use multiple iPods on a single computer and thought the best idea would probably be to make a separate library for his stuff. So I did that. Tonight, I tried to hook up my own iPod to the computer for the first time since then and... I can't find where my original library is. Yes, I'm holding "shift" when I open iTunes and choosing the library. The problem is, there seems to be just one library to choose now -- the one with about 30 songs. The one with the 3,000+ other songs seems to have vanished. Or else I can't figure where it is.
Help? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Sigh. This is so completely and fully screwed up and given how screwy it is, I have zero confidence that I will be able to do whatever machinations are going to be required to my computer and both iPods. But if anyone has any suggestions based on the information I'm about to give, I'd appreciate it.
There's indeed a folder called "iTunes library." When I open it, the title at the top says "previous iTunes libraries." There is no current or most recent version of my iTunes libraries.
But wait. That's not all. There's also a folder -- NOT a subfolder -- called "Sons iPod." It, too, contains "iTunes library" -- which now consists of the self-same "previous iTunes libraries" from the other folder. His library is gone, gone, gone -- not a tragedy since it consisted of about 30 songs from my library.
But things appear to me to be super-mega screwed up and I have no earthly idea how to:
    a) re-establish a current iTunes library for my iPod that won't wipe out more of my stuff. Is my library now dubbed "previous" because it was taken from a previous list? Or is that some other problem?
    b) establish some sort of iTunes library somewhere for my son's iPod that won't wipe out his stuff or my stuff or send me into orbit every time I try to sync one or the other iPods? Can I somehow ditch the #3 choice and establish him some other way on my computer? Even though that makes me quake with fear?
Hopefully, this can be solved in a satisfactory and not too time- or headache-intensive way but I am not hopeful. I am wondering if I will deeply regret buying my son an iPod. I can tell you I hate hate hate iTunes right now. Hate it. And I'm not exactly thrilled with Apple saying I could get technical support only if I pay them more f'ing money just so I can try to make their product work right. But I love Katrina.

  • How can I store my iTunes library on my new iPhone 6 rather than access it remotely through iCloud?

My old iPhone actually stored my iTunes music library so I could play it on my sonos system. the new iPhone 6 stores it remotely on iCloud which is not supported by sonos. Means I can only use my iPhone to control my music through my iMac meaning it has to be on all the time- a real pain!
Any help to overcome this would be brilliant

  • How can I store my iTunes library on Mom's dial-up computer as my backup??

Could somebody please give me click-by-click instructions on how to COPY my iTunes library onto my iPod Classic (using it as an external disc) so I can take it over to Mom's computer and download it as a backup.(She has dial-up, so no I don't want to download iTunes on her computer
We both have Windows XP, and I have plenty of space on my iPod for the transfer. Also, how long would it take to transfer about 11G of tunes!!
Thanks so much!! I'd just like a backup to the music I've collected...lots of it hard to get again!

Thanks Plan...the info was great, till I got to the part about copying the "library". I have about 7G of space on my computer, so I don't have the space to do that.
And Chris, your idea sounds great, but with the problem above, is it possible to copy the whole "she-bang" as it were. Meaning the program AND its contents onto my ipod and downloading it on Mom's computer....plenty of space on the ipod!!

  • Store my iTunes library on another computer

I have a mac running iTunes and a PC for my gaming needs. My PC has some large hard drives. I was wondering if it were possible to run iTunes on my mac but have the iTunes library stored on my PC?

OK, to answer my own question I bit the bullet and reloaded 10.5.4 that came with the Macbook. I never had any issues with that OS number. All my problems are now gone and things are working as they should. I started to notice some airport funkiness since the 10.5.6 update so something was added to the mix that didn't like my machine and setup.
