Where to store your videos (2014): iPhoto vs iTunes vs iMovie?

I used to store all my home videos in iPhoto, because I think It's better to save videos and pictures together in the same event.
But now that we have a tab in iTunes for 'home videos' and we also have 'theater' tab in iMovie.... Where do you think is better to save your home videos?
The idea is to watch them later in AppleTV, iPads, etc.
Thank you!

Open iPhoto and iMovie. Find the video is iPhoto and control click to get the contextual menu. There is an option to locate in Finder. Click on that and a Finder window opens with the video file highlighted. Drag that file to iMovie to import. After importing you can delete the one in iPhoto to avoid duplication.
As for events, iMovie automatically lists them by day. By default a event is a day but you can change it anyway you prefer.

  • Why Store Your Videos In iPhoto, When You Have iMovie?

Is there any reason for storing/importing your digital camera movies into iPhoto, when you use iMovie? The only reason I can see is, it's quicker and easier to import them into iPhoto, along with your photos. But really, it doesn't make much sense them being in iPhoto, mainly because iPhoto can't play video.

I will simply add that the preference to use iMovie or iPhoto probably has a lot to do with how you shot videos and what you do with them.
For me, I have a lot of old Analog 8mm/Hi8 and then Digital8 tapes I have been importing and editing with iMovie for yeas now. I also now use a Flip MinoHD video recorder which works very nicely with iMovie. In all cases, I often do some bits of editing and iMovie is a natural choice for that and also is now a gosh dang swell cataloging application for all your videos.
That said, many people don't use a camcorder, only take occasional movie clips with their point & shoot digital camera (many of which make pretty good video these days) and never do any editing. So for those people, iPhoto is a natural choice to store the small handful of short clips they take in any given year that are never edited and occasionally emailed to relatives as is. iMovie is overkill for them and they don't need a separate app to store their 5 or 8 clips they took over the past year, 80% of them on that one vacation in August.

  • Where do you store your videos?

My 80 GB iPod has more space than my computer does, and after buying several seasons worth of TV shows, I've run out of room on my computer, but still have space on the iPod. Where do you store all of these video files? I don't have a DVD burner (just a player), so I can't burn them onto DVDs.

  • Where do you guys store your videos?

Just wondering where mist people store their video, in the movies folder or in iMovie? I currently am importing all the movies taken from my iPhone in the past 2 years to iMovie. A folder named let's say June 2010 has 16 videos in it and so I import that entire folder and create an event called June 2010 and so on. But lately I'm questioning this method cause I can't see a way to see the date of one of those videos once in iMovie, the only thing the event shows me is let's say June 02 through June 27 2010. How do you do it?

  • Photo Booth - Where To Store Your Photos?

    Hi,
Can someone please explain, are you supposed to store your Photo Booth pictures actually within the Application, or are you eventually supposed to import them into iPhoto or drag them into the Finder? Is there a benefit to keeping your Photo Booth photos within Photo Booth, or are you best off just storing them in a regular folder in the Finder?

Photo Booth doesn't store your saved pictures in the application, it stores them in a Photo Booth folder inside your user's "Pictures" folder. This is where Photo Booth looks for them. If someone else logs in, Photo Booth looks in their "Pictures" folder for their own pictures. So, technically, they are in a folder in the Finder already. It's up to you if you leave them there or move them somewhere else. If you want to include them or use them in an iPhoto, you can certainly do that.

  • Where to store home videos

can I store my home videos in iphoto?
Or is there a better place to save them?

I agree to NOT store them in iPhoto. If you anticipate having large media (movies, music & photograph) library I'd recommend storing them on external HD's. Apple provides directions on how to move these libraries in:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
iMovie: How to move the Library to an EHD

  • Import video from iPhoto to the new iMovie

how does one import video from iPhoto video to i Movie for a project. This used to be simple.

In the CONTENT LIBRARY (bottom left) you should see an iPhoto item which when clicked gives you access to your iPhoto library.  Does this not include videos?  (I don't use iPhoto so cannot check).

  • There was a problem downloading your video to iPhoto from Nikon D3100 Camera

Hi, so I have a youtube channel and I've been trying to import my videos over from my camera and it says there was an error and it could not be downloaded, the same thing happens on image capture, i also keep getting a  notification that my startup disk is almost full and i went from 3,000 pictures to 370 and i deleted all of my downloads and it still tells me this what do i do? please help!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Confused where to store movies.  In iPhoto or iMovie

When I hookup my camera, all the photos and video clips download right into iPhoto. I just learned tonight that I can import these directly into iMovie, which seems nice. However, iPhoto has the ability to assign keywords and such to video clips. So it seems there are advantages to storing the video clips in both places. What do most people do?
For all the videos that are already in iPhoto, is there an easy way to yank them out and only have them exist in iMovie?
    Thanks!

In my opinion iMove is for editing not storing or managing archived files. iPhoto is a somewhat decent management program so keep your movies in there and only drag the files you need for projects in iMovie into iMovie.

  • How does Thunderbird keep track of where it stores your messages?

I am writing a program to isolate certain messages from a messages file. Of course I can hard code the path where the messages are kept at the moment, but when the user changes it, my program will be lost.
I have looked in the registry and profile.ini file with no luck. Anyone knows the answer? Thanks.

The path to messages in Thunderbird is random just for the reason your having trouble. To make programmatic access non trivial.
As you would have observed the profiles.ini contains a path the the root of the profile.
Within the profile mail is stores in profiles\imapmail for IMAP or profiles\mail for pop
Sub folders exist for the server the mail is for, often with a numeric suffix to separate multiple accounts on the same server, or multiple attempts to set up the same account.
These folder can again contain sub folder. depending on the internal structure of folders within Thunderbird.
If the user has specified a custom location for the folder of an account, that information is stored in the prefs.js file along with all other preferences. The account the setting is for is referenced numerically. So you need to establish from the preferences what the account number is, before reading the preference for location.

  • Where do I find videos in iPhoto for Snow Leopard?

I download my photos into iPhoto and then can't find any videos I've done. Where are they?

Thanks again for the response. I have iPhoto 11 and since my upgrade with the new Macbook Pro, the thumbnails in iPhoto don't have the little camera to identify the videos from the pictures. I happened to have iMovie open and I uploaded again and this time it put all the videos in there. I was so jazzed. I even archived them for good measure.
Then, when I went to show my discovery, I went to disconnect the camera in the middle of the video showing and it stopped. The window went away.  iMovie has a folder for the stuff I archived, but no trace of the videos. I knew I archived it, but when I went to look for it, I can't find it!!!!!! So not liking this "user friendly Mac" right now! Does anyone have any answers? I live in the jungle of Brazil where I can't get geeks on a regular basis. Any help is much appreciated!
    Much appreciated!!! Thanks!

  • Where are all the Video FX and Audio FX from iMovie HD?

Exactly! I tried looking for them, but all I found were: Music and Sound Effects, Photos, Titles, and Transitions.
iMovie HD had things (under "Editing") such as: Video FX and Audio FX, and also had waaay more choices of Titles, and a couple extra Transitions.
Is there a way that I can find all the stuff iMovie HD had on iMovie '08 without using iMovie HD?

Many reviews of iMovie 08 recommend using both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06 (I do).
When iLife 08 is installed, all of the old applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
The Web site below has a good comparison of iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/imovie8.html
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • Videos in iPhoto

I have not used iPhoto much since version 06 or maybe earlier.
    1. Does the newer version support video produced from cameras that shoot 720 or 1080?
    2. Do you even bother using iPhoto to store your videos or do you use something else?
    Thanks.

    1. Does the newer version support video produced from cameras that shoot 720 or 1080?
Yes, but like your Raw query, it depends on formats and codecs. So, AVCHD Lite is not supported, for instance.
    2. Do you even bother using iPhoto to store your videos or do you use something else?
Some folks do, some don't. Personally, I don't. I have too much stuff from too many cameras and other sources.
    Regards
