  • How to upgrade harddrive?

How to upgrade harddrive? i have 320GB hard drive and need to upgrade to 1TB! what should i do! i would like to know every possible answers!
i want to see 320GB to 1TB on my system info so how can i upgrade to make this possible?

If your work requires manipulating large files that require frequent disk access, such as video editing, then a 7200 RPM model is worth considering. For routine computing purposes though you are not likely to discern a difference between it and 5400 RPM. At one time 7200 RPM drives had a reputation for requiring more power and generating more heat which would not be desirable in any Mac, most of all a portable one. I don't know if newer drives are any better in that regard.
There really is no particular manufacturer or model that stands out. At one time or another all the popular manufacturers have suffered from bad reputations. Hitachi seems to have been an exception but their drive division was purchased by Western Digital last year, whose product reputation has been as inconsistent as everyone else's. So there is no one manufacturer I recommend over any other. I do like Seagate's hybrid drive concept but I have not personally tested any. Despite hearing many cries from others saying this one or that one is junk, don't buy it, I have never personally experienced a hard disk failure from any drive manufacturer in any Mac. For that I credit having multiple redundant backups for what is probably just good fortune.
In my opinion all hard disks should be considered cheap disposable junk though. They are wear items that will require eventual replacement, and appropriate contingencies should be made for their eventual demise.
On the other hand OWC's solid state drives are worth getting excited over. I installed a number of their Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSDs in MacBook Pros. Their performance has been impressive and OWC's support unmatched. That doesn't mean they'll last forever, or that you don't need a backup plan.
If you're seeking a recommendation for a particular model and capacity traditional spinning HD for your MacBook Pro, you're not likely to find one, but I hope the above gives you sufficient information to make an informed decision.

  • Troubles Installing 10.3 after upgrading harddrive in iMac DV

I'm setting up a 400MHz Lime Green iMac DV for my nephew and wanted to give him a larger hard drive, so I slipped in a 100gb (well below the "big drive limit of 128GB), I start up holding 'C' with the install disk 1 (of 2) and the install program & the computer reconize, lets me rename, reformat, verify permissions, etc. but when I choose a volume to install Mac OS X on, the new 100gb hdd icon's has a red exclaimation icon, and it says "You cannont install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." What's wrong? The iMac previously had a 10gb harddrive with 10.3 (upgraded all the way to 10.3.9), so I don't think it's a Firmware issue...what am I doing incorrectly? Thanks for all suggestions ahead of time.

It sounds like it could be an issue with the drive and it's partition scheme. Was this a brand new, never used drive, or a drive taken from a different computer that you had upgraded with a larger hard drive, like a PC? If so, that's more than likely the problem.
First, try rebooting with the OS X install CD and try installing again; it might just be a glitch that's fixed by this, since it's happened to other people, too.
If that doesn't work, and the drive is from a different computer, we need to figure out the partition scheme on that drive, so do this:
    1. Boot from the OS X install disc and open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. Select the hard disk (not the volume) in the left side of the Disk Utility window. The disk usually contains the name of the drive vendor, not "Macintosh HD" or a name you chose.
    • Volume names are indented on the left side of the window. Disk names are not indented.
    3. From the Disk Utility File menu, choose Get Info.
    4. Look for the "Partition Type:" line.
    • A PowerPC-based Mac can only install Mac OS X on a disk with the "Applepartitionscheme" (Mac OS Extended format), which you can also view in Disk Utility by selecting the Disk name and looking at the bottom left of the window where it says "Format".
If it doesn't say it's partitioned with the Apple partition scheme or as Mac OS Extended, you'll need to repartition the drive in the Mac OS Extended format before you can install OS X.
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • T520 upgrading harddrive

First, I was planning to do a clean Windows 7 install on a new T520.  The drivers page didn't have anything though, does anyone know where I'd go to get all the various drivers for a T520?
I was doing a clean install as I've got my own harddrive.  Is there a better way to get things setup on the new harddrive than doing a clean install
I do like starting with a clean install (I don't need a bing toolbar or whatever else), on other machines in the past though its hurt as I've lost the ability to play back DVDs.

I'm glad to hear Thinkpad doesn't do the bloatware thing.  Honestly I did not look around too much before starting the upgrade, besides office and the bing toolbar I didn't see anything.
Anyhow the reason for the clean install was more to install a larger harddrive (I wanted an SSD but didn't want to pay for the more expensive Intel SSD).  What I found last night is that not all the drivers at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=/product.do?template=%2Fproductpage%2... work for my computer.  The intel chipset drivers worked, the video and monitor drivers worked, but I still have no networking (wireless or wired).  There were some other devices still missing drivers.
I still have the original harddrive with the factory install, so I am going to have to swap that back in and try to find the SWTOOLS preload folder (this folder is mentioned here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T520-drivers-for-Windows/m-p/407305)
I did make recovery disks, the first thing I tried was to use those to recover onto the new harddrive.  After much waiting, it did not work.    The device did not have a boot sector apparently as though the recovery process completed, on reboot the machine would ask for boot media.

  • IMac: Upgrade harddrive or get an external drive?

I am running out of space on my harddrive (500GB) and am considering my options:
    1. Upgrade the harddrive in my IMac.
    2. Attach an external harddrive and move some large folders to it.
What are the experiences of others with either option? What is more affordable? What is a better solution for my working experience? If I opt for an internal upgrade, how do I replace the harddrive? Do I do it myself or go somewhere? And if upgrading externally, how do I move the files without it slowing down my working experience? I appreciate any help with this issue,
    Best, Arnout

you are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain at least 15-20 GBs of empty hard drive space.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Unistall any third party applications in your applications folder that you no longer use.
If the app has no uninstaller, just drag it to the OS X Trash icon. If the app has an uninstaller app, use this app to completely Unistall the application. Remember to empty OS X trash, again, when you are done deleting apps.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Upgrade harddrive on retina macbook pro?

hi! i have the retina display macbook pro i bought about a year ago when it came out, and it has only 250 GB harddrive, because its this new SSD drive. now i was wondering if it by now is possible to upgrade the harddrive and get a bigger one?

You don't have a hard drive - you have flash storage on a daughter card of the main logic board.
If you're already out of your warranty period, you may want to search eBay for 512GB or 768GB flash storage cards. The only warrantied flash storage card I know of is from OWC -> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDAP12R480/ - a 480GB flash storage card.
    Good luck,

  • Where has my harddrive space gone?

I will soon be getting a new MacBook with a solid state harddrive.  It will likely be smaller than the 500GB drive I use now, so I am calculating what size I need.  I can do without some of my own files (under "Users"), but I imagine I need everything else.  However, the math just isn't adding up.  My folders on the HD are as follows:
    apps 12.8 GB
    library 12.47 GB
    system 4.45 GB
    total non-user files = 29.72 GB
My "users" folder is 236.39 GB
grand total = 266.11 GB used.
However, under "info" after ctrl-clicking the HD, it says I am using 406.75 GB!  (unused = 58.69, capacity = 465.44.)
What am I missing?  Is this missing data hidden but essential and needing to be factored in to my new HD?

Check your hard drive space again using one of the following...
OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $.99 -  FreeSpace shows you how much space is available on all local, connected, and network drives with a single click.

  • I am running 6.1 and want to upgrade to 7.1 then to 10.1.  I understand this is a two step process and can find where to upgrade from 7.1 to 10.1 but cannot find 6.1 to 7.1.   Can anyone head me in the right direction?

Where can I find the pathway to upgrade my 6.1 iMac to the Lion 7.1 and then to the Montian Lion 10.1.   I think I have to update to Lion before I can update to montian Lion but cannot find the upgrade to take me from 6.1 to 7.1

What are we talking about here? You've posted in a Windows forum, but seems you are referring to an iMac. But you are not referring to OS X version numbers. Maybe you should make clear what you want.

  • Upgrade Harddrive - What brands actually work???

Hi, I'm getting a bit confused. More I read, more I am unsure what direction to go. I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Early 2006), and want to upgrade the harddrive to a larger one.
Looking at the Seagate 500Gb, then see all kinds of post about them freezing up and having lots of problems. So I think, "Well, Western Digital is good, right?" and am looking at their 320Gb Scorpio Black (without G shock). Then see post saying WD is junk ... ARRRGGGHHH!!!
Seems everyone has problem with every brand. So, which is really reliable and a good upgrade to go with?
    Thanks!

Kappy, thank you for the reply. I actually did search for answers, but all that came up was others with the similar questions that were never really answered, and the complaints about the various drives. I do search before posting, but sometimes just posting a new question is much easier than sifting through all the various complaints and such.
I appreciate your reply and input. It still concerns me with the rash of problems seagate seems to have as of late, with no apparent resolution. Although as you say, out of how many they sell, the incidents are likely a small percentage.
Thanks for the tips too, I realize it's a bit involved replacing the drives and am familiar with the workings and how to do it. Just figuring what to put in it ... lol!

  • Upgraded harddrive from a failing drive, can't resize the partition

I have an iMac (27 inch). I upgraded my HDD 1TB drive to a 3TB drive because my original drive was failing. I used a stand alone drive cloner (Bytecc BT-340) and after 8+ hours (because of the bad harddrive) I was able to copy the drive.
I had a bootcamp partition and I attempted to boot into windows, the computer hung up indefinitely. Upon reboot the computer would give me a progress bar under the apple logo, it would make some progress, then the computer will shut off.
I made a 2nd attempt at recovering the hard drive info successfully from the original 1TB back into the 3TB. My First step after that was to delete the bootcamp partition to make sure I wouldn't repeat the problem again. Now I can't seem to resize my 750GB partition for my 3TB harddrive. I get a message "Media Kit Reports Partition too small".
I have only attempted to use Disk Utility for this, my issue is that I don't have a reliable backup of my information. I'm only using about 25% of my hard drive capability and I would like to resize my partition but I don't want to chance relying on a failing drive as a backup. Any suggestions?

Here's your only way out. Create a new partition in the free space. Use Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper! to clone your current volume to the new, empty partition. Then verify everything is OK, delete the bottom partition and expand the remaining one.
Your alternative is to buy iPartition 3.3.1 which can handle the problem - $45.00.

  • Where to upgrade my GX60?

Okay, so about 1 month ago I bought a GX60. However, I find that the processor is way underperforming.
So I did some research and found that it can be upgraded and the A10-5750M was an option. Can anyone tell me where I can buy mobile processors? Or is there an option that MSI themselves will upgrade it for me if I compensate them? The A10-4300m is just horrible. It can't even play Saints Row and it barely runs Battlefield 3, even on the low preset... Ugh.
Just to be sure: Yes, I made sure I had ''high performance'' enabled in the Vision control center. :P

A10-4300M? 4300M should be an A4 but GX60 only comes with A10. It should be an A10-46xxM. None the less upgrading a notebook cpu is not as easy as upgrading a desktop board. For notebooks only a few cpus are supported. It's only quite safe to use such that came with the notebookmodel  by default. While your GX60 came with a Trinity cpu - like all first series GX60 - A10-5750M is a Richland cpu. Richland support was included for the new GX60 3BE. You need to ask MSI if Richland A10-5750M can be used in your notebook and if so if it requires an updated bios: >>How to contact MSI.<<
None the less MSI doesn't offer any upgrades. It would be up to you to find a cpu and mount it. Check ebay to find one.

  • Upgrade Harddrive in Power Mac G5 mod. 7.3.

    Hi!
Wish to upgrade my PM G5 modell 7.3. (June 2004). I have a 2 GHz dual core. Most 3,5" SATA HD today are SATA-300 and SATA-600 could either of these SATA HD be used in my G5, or is there some other spesification on the SATA that I need to know before I purchase it? I am looking for two 1 TB HD to upgrade.

    Hi-
Western Digital Black (and Blue) drives, the Hitachi 7K drives work very well in a G5.
Seagate drives are problematic in the G5. A one-time "gold standard" for Macs, Seagate SATA 3 drives should be avoided for use in a G5.
Western Digital SATA 2 Black and Blue drives are plug and play out of the box.
Western Digital SATA 3 Black and Blue drives are plug and play with use of a jumper on pins 5 and 6 of the drive to limit to SATA 2.
Hitachi 7K SATA 2 and SATA 3 drives are plug and play out of the box.
