Which 15" Macbook to get?

I'm looking into purchasing a new 15" Macbook and there are two models which seem to differ ever so slightly: 2.0 GHz and 2.2 GHz.
Apart from a slightly faster processor and 50% more HD space the 2.2GHz seems to have a more advanced video card with 1GB vs 256MB of memory. The first two items seem insignificant, but will the latter make a noticeable difference for LR performance?
I seem to remember that the amount of RAM, processor speed and HD speed are the primary factors to consider, not so much the video. Then again I will be using LR regularly with an external display of around 24" or large-screen TVs for presentations.
Any insights would be appreciated.

Go for the 2.2GHz version. The faster processor is worth having, especially when building previews. The graphics dard and memory aren't goig to make a lot difference in Lr, they will do in Photoshop.

How do I know which Hard Drive to get for my MacBook 2006? The old Hard Drive is a Toshiba (MK8034GSX) S/N Z6APT2XUT 9H5 EC. A?

I've put a 250gb 7200rpm drive in an Early 2006 with no problems.
    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
    Or OWC  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

The software i use to play dj music videos cause for multi disply in which my Macbook pro has a single display funtion. Is the ant way to get multi monitor display added to my computer

If the monitor can be detected your Displays preferences should show it in its Arrangement panel.  You may have to play around with your Display panel to get the desired resolution.  And also may have to click detect displays and gather windows to see both sets of preferences on your main screen.

  • Looking to get a mac for fall semester, have a few questions on which one I should get.

Hello everyone, this is the first time im posting here and i hope i can get some help. Im in the need of a new computer; I have been wanting a mac for a long time and i figured since im a junior in college that i should get myself something decent to finish school with. Any who i have been thinking about getting a refurbished mac for a while now, to me saving a few bucks is always a plus. I was just wondering though, do you guys think i should get one of those older products or maybe get one of the newer models just announced at wwdc? I had my eye out on a macbook pro, but the air has also been looking really nice. Im really having a tough time trying to decide which one i want get. This will be my main computer btw, and i currently do have an iphone and ipad 2 to go along with it. Here are the notebooks i was considering and also i usually will not be carrying it around campus that much.
    macbook pro 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD313LL/A
    macbook air 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC965LL/A
    macbook air 11in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC969LL/A
Hopefully you guys can help me out, im really looking forward to owning a mac. If it wasnt for the os, i wouldnt be considering one, but i just fell in love with it when one of my high school teachers was showing some of the things he could do with his mac. Also if anyone has any other suggestions, please tell me, im all up for new ideas.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you... gonna be using it as my primary computer, graduating college soon, and my first mac. I'll be going with the 13 inch MacBook Air.
The Pro and the Air are nearly identical performance-wise and so that means the only advantage of the Pro is the storage space (unless you count the cd drive as an advantage). The Air is way more portable and has a better display, I don't know about you but my current cd drive rarely gets used so might as well get rid of it.
I have also compared them side-by-side in the store and that was really what won me over to the Air. The 11-inch Air was there too but the screen just seems too small, especially if you are doing work/writing essays etc.
    Hope that helped

  • Which new MacBook Pro is best for a graphic design student?

Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which new MacBook Pro to get. I'm a graphic design student who would like to be able to use Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator at the same time, while also web browsing (I tend to have a million windows open). I won't be using the computer for any video work or heavy gaming.
Here's what I do know: I'd like the retina display, and I need the 8GB of memory (do I need more?). Other than that, I'm not too sure about what specifications I need. I'm not super knowledgeable about all of this, so apologies if these are very elementary questions. Any help would be much, much appreciated. Here are my main questions:
    1. Would you recommend getting the quad core i7, or is i5 fine? For i5, do I need to pay attention to the difference between 2.4GHz and 2.6GHz?
    2. What exactly is PCle-based flash storage, and would you recommend 256GB or 512GB?
    3. What's the difference between Intel Iris Pro and Intel Iris?
    Thanks so much!

    1) Depending on which software you'll be using most of the times a quad core has more benefits (since it's more future proof). Not all software supports multiple cores (and thus rendering the extra cores of the quad "useless" if it's not supported).
    2) PCI-e is what we use in desktops to attach for example a graphic card. Previous hard drives used a cable to connect it with the motherboard (in the old days we used IDE, now recent hardware uses SATA3). Basically because it's directly connected to your motherboard (there's more to it but to keep it simple) this will allow it to read and write faster from and to it. (Double the speeds of your regular SSD)
    3) I reckon (haven't checked into it) that the base core speeds are clocked higher on the Iris Pro and probably has more dedicated ram to it.
What a graphical student wants would be most likely a quad core CPU with a dedicated graphics card. The extra is storage is nice if you reckon you'd need it. (I mostly work on cloud but keep my current projects on my drive because then I'd have faster access to it).

  • How hot do macbook airs get?

I was wondering if macbook airs get really hot when being used often because i have a macbook pro and it does get pretty hot and i need to put a pillow underneath it and i was hoping that if I got a macbook air it wouldn't get so hot. Also, is a 13" better for writing papers and gaming better than an 11" ???

don't put a pillow under it, you may be blocking the exhaust vents which could make it run even harder.  It should be used on a flat, hard surface such as a table.

Yes, they can tend to run hot.  A 13" would be better than an 11" for gaming purely do to the larger screen.  For writing papers, either would be sufficient.

  • Imovie 11 on macbook pro get error message cannot save project changes

imovie 11 on macbook pro get error message cannto save project changes:
Please check the disk to ensure there is enough free space and you have permission to write projects. iMovie will try to save periodically, but your changes will be lost if you quit iMovie before the problem is resolved.  I have 462 GB disc space available.  I don't know about "permission to write projects".

OK - bad luck about that. I hope you weren't too far advanced into your project. Sorry to hear that repairing permissions didn't help.
When working on a long project, it's advisable to duplicate the project from time to time. In Project Library view click on your project then select File>Duplicate Project from iMovie's menu. A number will be appended to the name of the duplicate, otherwise you can rename it. A short-cut is to control-click (or right-click) on the project name, then select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu. Duplicating doesn't take up much extra space, as the project points to the clips in the Event (or Events) and doesn't contain actual video as such (it's basically a text file which also holds information about your edits, added photos, music, titles and so forth).
Also, it's best to have a backup, such as Time Machine. It gives you peace of mind when things go wrong!

  • MacBook is getting slower and slower

My 2008 2.4ghz Intel MacBook is getting slower and slower at running basic operations. I have tried to free up my harddrive as it was VERY full. I free up 40 GB+ of space, but something is still filling it back up?
Here is what my profile looks like
How do I figure out what all this "other" material is?
I thought it was due to a lack of memory after upgrading to Lion, but it has been getting dramatically worse, which doesn't seem like a memory issue to me.
    Any thoughts?

    You're welcome.
The other section represents files that are uncategorized  by your OS.  That could be part of your OS, application fonts and so on.
2GB is enough to run lion but might be painfully slow.  Try to bump it up to 4GB if your supports it.
If your MB is an early 08, you can go as high as 6GB.  If you have a late 08, you can go as high as 8GB.
Only upgrade if you plan on keeping your MB longer.

well im looking at the 15 inch non retina and the retina doesnt come with a superdrive, as ill be needing that to burn material straight from my laptop to cds. So that more or less rules out any of the retina display models. Its just the customizing i needed help unless you could suggest another model entirely!
You can add an Optical drive to the Retina models connected by USB. And it does not have to be the Apple branded (Not So) Superdrive. It can be any portable CD/DVD burner that connects by USB.
But in all honesty you can get a faster Windows PC notebook then any of the Mac notebooks for around 1/2 - 2/3 the cost for what you want to do with it.

  • My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage

My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage and the fan's noise is annoying, my friends say this is not normal
    Is it normal?
It gets really hot especially when there is flash content

I am also having what I feel are excessive temperatures and fans while doing nothing tasks like web browsing.
Can anyone tell me what the reasonable operating ranges are for the various components?
There is a program called "Tmperature Monitor" which is free and gives even more sensor readings than iStat Pro.
Why does flash make it so hot?  I have this problem too.
Also is it normal when connecting only one external display and just browsing the web for the GPU to be at 85-90C (194F)?
Any idea why iStat always shows a lower battery percentage than OSX?
    Thanks

    Hi,
SAP Standard Report itself covers all the requirements mentioned.  With FBL5N, we get to know how much has been invoiced, paid and cleared and how much advance has been paid by customer etc., in one screen.  Apart from this we have also all signs which show, which all invoices are due, overdue and its easy to analyse as well.
Was this requirement given by client after seeing this standard report?
    Hope this info is helpful.
    Regards,
    Venkat

I have created some long text through function module CREATE_TEXT And i am able to see the text in the transaction .
My requirement is from which table i can get these stored long text???
    Any suggestions please.
    Thanks

    Appreciate your answers.
I have checked the both the fields stxh as well as stxl but i am not able to find any text fields out there.
My actual requirement is some third party software needs to b mapped the table fields in order to import it.
So if i know the table fields that would be easier.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.
