Which 23/24'' display for editing on fcp ? eizo/apple/dell?

hi
i just cant make up my mind... the 3 finalists are
eizo s2410w, apple 23, dell 2405/2407.
i heard horror stories about the apple but on the other hand i've seen one work perfectly. the eizo is the most expensive but has 5 year warranty, the dell is cheap and i can get my hands on the last 2405 in israel, is it better than the 2407 ? any advice and comments will be much appriciated.
it will be used as a single display editing dv and later hdv.

I see no big thing about the cable connections. They do tuck up inside, from the bottom and are a bit awkward to connect that first time, but it's not like I have even looked it since then. It's of no consequence in my opinion. My machine sleeps with no problem at all. I also keep a 17" dell flat screen (el cheapo, for palettes and such) connected and there is no problem with it either. I think the differences between the 2410 and the 240 have mostly to do with how they are calibrated, the software, etc, but you should get the scoop from Eizo on that. I think the 240w is the newer of the two. I think the ease of adjusting the height and angle is a pain. The curved sliding stand isn't all that smooth. The cheap Dell just lifts and twists, much more easily, but again, it's not like I'm constantly moving my screen up and down so again, it's not even on the radar in comparison to cost, image quality, backlight evenness, color aberations, dead pixels, etc etc. On all those counts (except cost ) the Eizo just has no real competition. Text is SNAP sharp. Color is really impressive. I'll tell you what I wish this monitor DID do that it doesn't...and that is HD. I think Samsung has some nice HD compliant monitors that I considered, but in the end I wanted color fidelity first and foremost.

  • Which codec converting MP4 for editing?

I did a search on this question.  I have a copy of MPEG Streamclip.  But exactly what codec should I use so that there is little or no loss of data?  Streamclip defaults to Apple Motion JPEG A.  I see all the Apple ProRes codes; and two others - Apple FCP Uncompressed 8-bit/10-bit 4:2:2.  What exactly is different about these?
    Thanks.

    Hi William,
What are you looking to use the MP4 for as this will have a bearing on the type of MP4 codec to go for.
Motion JPEG A is an older (but still useful) codec. It's been superseded by many other MPEG formats.
ProRes is Apples latest codecs. Personally I love them. They give very good compression with very little loss in image. That's not to say there is none. ProRes422LT is one of the more lossy versions while 422HQ is the least lossy. They are aimed at 10bit video but can be used just as well for 8bit too.
Uncompressed is just what it infers. It has a lossless image but has the downside of being a large, uncompressed file size. You will also need a very fast harddrive to play this media at full rate.
My recommendation out of all of these would be ProRes422 Standard (ie, with no suffix of letters on the end). This will give you good all round performance for editing and image quality (although some high detail / high motion footage it may appear a little noisy).
    All the best

  • How to use progress indicator which block the user for editing ?

    Hi All,
I have a requirement where i need to show a round progress bar while processing to the database. For example :- I have a bounded taskflow and inside it I have a two jspx page called as "First.jspx" and "Second.jspx".And i have two textboxes and one "Save" button on first.jspx page.
Now when user puts the values in the textboxes and hits the "Save" button , my ticker or progress indicator should say "Please wait while processing" and as soon as the transaction is complete , i need to show another page which is "Second.jspx" page. "Save" button action has method inside a managed bean which has some functionality and then it executes the VO(View Object) and commits the data.
How should i implement the indicator?
I have read this article :- http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/42-progressbarcolor-169184.pdf but it doesn't fit to my requirement.I need indicator which holds the user to edit anything on the page.Like what we get when we do any transaction in banks while navigating to payment gateway.
    Please suggest!!!
    Thanks and Regards,
    Shah

    Hi Shah,
The answer was around the same are that you were looking into. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/27-long-running-queries-169166.pdf but the sample was the 27.

  • Which Codec to use for editing?

    Hi everyone.
I have some rather large uncompressed files which premiere pro is struggling with. The files are only 2:20 seconds long but are 20GB in size with a data rate of 1244163kbps. My computer can play them but it's not smooth. Seeing as I'm going to be adding effects and working on different video tracks I figure it's a good idea to encode this footage before editingh with it in Premiere.
So I'm wondering what's the best codec and wrapper to encode with for editing? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kevin

At this point, yes it's just for editing.
The free UT codec is another good choice, but it's 8 bit only.  It is lossless, though, and does play fine in a couple of media players.

I've used the Dell 2407 and the Apple 23". Both are fine.
I think the Dell is a better value. One feature I didn't think about until I used it was that the Dell does not have an external power supply – a good thing in my opinion. This made it more flexible as I was moving the system to different locations.
That being said I recently bought an Apple 23" because I found a case that would hold both the CPU and the monitor.
Another good thing about the Dell was the ease of adjusting its height, although, that also makes it a bit of trick to pick up off the desk.
The Dell has all of its connection options up on the monitor. The Apple has a cable bullt into it. In my opinion this is personal preference.
They are both very good to use.

  • Capturing HDMI signal to MacBook Pro for editing in FCP

I have a ton of old home-recorded VHS tapes that I'm hoping to capture to FCP editable QT files. I'm considering purchasing a Panasonic BluRay/VHS combi deck, the DMP-BD70V, because it supposedly upscales old VHS tapes for display through the HDMI cable output. My question is, will I be able to feed the digital output of the HDMI cable directly into my MacBook Pro 15" (vintage September 2007) laptop, or will I still need some sort of card to make the HDMI signal palpable to my computer?

The short answer is - not unless you are willing to fork over $600+ for the necessary converter. Probably the least expensive such converter is the Canopus ADVC-HD50, which can convert the HDMI signal to HDV and feed it to your Mac via FireWire. Something to consider is that you will be going through multiple conversions this way - VHS -> upscaling to hidef via HDMI -> conversion to HDV -> possible conversion to AIC or ProRes. IMHO not a great workflow, as it's likely to degrade the quality to a noticeable degree, especially that upscaling step.
Something to consider - the quality is limited by the original VHS tape & recording. Even DV is significantly higher quality than VHS. You will be better off converting directly from the analog VHS to DV using a Canopus ADVC-110 or 300 or similar analog-DV converter.

  • Importing a .mov for editing in FCP

I am working on a project for a client where they had me import a bunch of VOB files from DVDs for the purpose of editing and exporting in a Windows/PowerPoint friendly format like .wmv.
I'm using mpeg streamclip to convert the VOB files. Many of the clips feature footage combined with graphics/text.
When I first convert the VOB files to .mov, the text looks fine. As soon as I put it into FCP (using FCP HD), the text looks distorted and horrible.
I'm using the Flip4Mac plug-in for FCP to convert to .wmv, which does great on the footage, but the text still *****. I've tried adding a slight gaussian blur and a sharpness filter at about 40% - which helps, but not absolutely.
I know that I'm losing quality through all of the converting, but any ideas why the initially converted VOB looks fine and then turns to mush once imported into FCP?
    Thanks
    Jaimey

So its just the text? Like, it played fine both text and video then the video stayed good but the text went bad?? What a mystery....
For importing QT's sake of disscussion, most of these problems occur because you're trying to up-convert lower res videos to the SD (or HD) settings of FCP.
Also make sure you've rendered ALL of the timeline (especially the "green" people forget about)
Finally, try exporting a sample out of final cut pro to see if the problem will go away out of final cut.
    Good Luck!!

  • Transfering Video 8 tape for editing in FCP

I'd like to bring some Video 8 tapes from a camcorder without a firewire port, into FCP to edit them. What should I have the footage converted into .... miniDV tape, Quicktime, DVD ??? Which will give the best results to work with?
    Thanks a lot
    monica

I now know NOT to have them converted to QuickTime (which is what someone suggested but I doubted that was the way to go).< </div>
That will work just fine. IN order for that to happen, someone has to capture them onto a Mac and then give you a disk fo the files. Nothing wrong with that at all.
    What you need to consider:
    a. Do you want a backup copy?
    b. What will you play them on that you can hook up to your Macintosh?
    c. What will you print them out to for release?

  • Converting DVD for editing in FCP

    Hello All.
I am converting DVDs in MPEG Streamclip but need help reducing the size of the exporting file.
I regularly receive DVDs of performances to edit. This specific one in question, as many are, has a video size of 720x480, the aspect ration is 4:3, format NTSC. It is Standard Definition. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD, which is 999 MB. I will export via QuickTime, to some variation of Apple Pro Res, or DVC PRO...at varying percent of quality, but the file always comes out much larger than the original. Depending on clip size, it will come out at 2-20GB in size.
Does anyone have any suggestions or informantion on how to reduce the file size of the DVDs I am converting?
Thanks much for your time and assistance,
    Paolo

Most importantly, for storage space reasons,
Storage space is really cheap. If you can't get more storage then do what was previously suggested by David. Capture everything as DV/NTSC. That will give you the smallest file size for your capture
as well as because I will be uploading them to YouTube, where there are limits to the size of file you can upload.
You're not uploading your captured footage file to youtube. You need to convert to a format that youtube will accept. This file has limitations not the captured file.

  • Which codec to use for editing AND motion graphics (ala Final Cut Studio)?

I have a prosumer-level AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM700) and am working with Final Cut Studio. After doing a great deal of research it appears that there is NO real benefit to using any codec other than ProRes 422 for straight editing (a camera at this price point doesn't shoot images of a high enough quality to warrant using 422 HQ, which also requires more processor power, and not only does 4444 require rendering it also takes up a ton of space). However, I have read (many times) that there may be some benefit to using 422 HQ if I am doing motion graphics work (ala Motion 4). Can anyone verify this? Would it make any discernible difference when shooting with a camera like this? Even though it is a prosumer camcorder I am trying to squeeze as much value as I can out of the entire production.
    Any input or advice?
    Thanks!

  • I purchased Lightroom on my old Macbook but recently updated to a Mac with Retina display for editing my photos. I don't want to purchase Lightroom again and want to keep my catalog I have been using. Is there a way to access it on my new computer?

I purchased Lightroom on my old Macbook but recently updated to a Mac with Retina display. How do I access Lightroom on my new computer without purchasing it again?

If you created a new Apple ID, you have to purchase the app again. If you can still use the old ID, then you can download it again for free by using that ID. But you will run the risk of locking yourself out of your new Apple ID for 90 days by downloading the app with your old ID and associating the iPad with the old ID.
Is the risk of locking yourself out of your new Apple ID worth not having to pay $.99 again for an app?

  • Calibrating Apple Cinema Display for Video Editing

What's the procedure to calibrate an Apple Cinema Display for editing in FCP (editing and preliminary color grading)?
My camcorder can produce color bars, but I can't hook it up directly to the monitor. Shall I record color bars and use the recorded clip to calibrate? What's the procedure regarding calibration?
    Thanks!

The need to "calibrate" a display for video "editing" is a complete fallacy. There is no need to have accurate images when plopping pictures and graphics next to each other to create a story in a linear fashion. For accuracy you need a dedicated input/output device with a display that represents your intended delivery; projection, broadcast, whatever. If your intended delivery is web or phone only, well, it's a total rodeo where the word "consistency" has no meaning at all.
The MXO, it puts a look up table on a computer monitor and then does some other electronic mumbo jumbo to simulate interlacing and other tv junk. I call it lipstick on a pig, others here will give it high marks.
The only real constant is that if you want to play in the world of "hd", the costs are bigger than in "sd" and is the return on investment worth it?

  • Which macbook for editing?

I'm wondering if the macbook air, macbook pro, or macbook pro with retina display will be better for video, and photo editing.
I have a gaming computer and I just wanted a separate laptop for my photography and video editing. It will also be helpful for when I travel.
    What it'll be used for:
    Adobe photoshop
    Adobe after effects
    Daily (Emails, notes, homework)
Would I need i5 or i7? Because I heard i7 is better for editing. Do I need to go from 4gb to 8gb ram? And the same from how much space I should upgrade to?
Macbook air has a long battery life and the new intel HD 5000 graphics.
Macbook pro with retina display has the nice retina display which may be great for editing, but is it truly even worth it?
I'm currently in school for software engineering, and photography.
Which should I get, and what are the necessary upgrades I will need?

Unless you're too delicate and can't handle the weight, a regular MacBookPro with the Widescreen/Anti-glare and 2.6GHz processor options (gets you 1GB VRAM as well):
Then upgrade by yourself to 16GB RAM and either a 7200RPM HDD or an SSD for substantially less than what Apple charges and you will have a screamer.
