Which ADSL Modem for Airport Express?

OK. This is simple... or so I thought.
Here's the situation: I have just subscribed to Demon's broadband service (in the UK) and I want to create an AirPort Express wireless network in my home. I have a Windows-based laptop and an iMac G5 (with an AirPort card factory-installed) that I wish to share this connection.
I know that the USB modem that Demon supply will be useless and that I need to buy an ADSL Ethernet modem to connect to the AirPort Express base station, but can anyone advise which one I need?
I've read loads on this matter and there seems to be some controversy surrounding which ADSL Ethernet modems work with AX, especially when wishing to connect more than one computer to the conenction. I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me which ADSL Ethernet modem to buy to fulfil my wish!
Also, any recommendations on which wireless networking adapter card to buy for my non Wi-Fi laptop to work with the above set-up?
AirPort Express   Mac OS X (10.4)

My flatmate and I faced exactly the same dilemma two months ago, and while I can't give you a comparison of different brands, I can tell you that we ended up buying a SafeCom modem router, which works perfectly with our airport express, providing internet connectivity to two and sometimes three laptops at the same time.
I will warn you (and you may already have discovered this) that High Street electronics stores will pretend not to know what you are asking for if you say you want an ethernet-out device; they want to sell you non-Apple wireless transmitters.
The modem router we bought was far and away the cheapest alternative on the market (at £25), which doubtless contributed to the reluctance of retailers to dig it out of the dark corners of their topmost shelves for us. The set up was a breeze (as compared with the set up for the USB modem that came with our broadband service) and we haven't had any problems at all. No interruptions of service, no slowdowns, nothing.
(I'm not sure whether my user info indicates this, but I live in the U.K.)

  • What to use as an ADSL modem for Airport Express/Extreme?

I am in the UK.  My broadband comes down the telephone line.  What modem should I use to connect to an Airport Express or Airport Extreme router?

My ISP is Demon, which is now owned by Vodafone.  I telephoned Demon and was told (a) that it only supplies the Technicolor TG582n as a courtesy (b) that it supplies no other hardware (c) that I might be able to make the TG582n work in bridge mode but that Demon provides no support for that - meaning no help or advice either (d) that any router bought off-the-shelf in the UK which supports ADSL 2+ will be compatible with Demon's service and (e) that any modem which supports ADSL 2+ should also therefore work.  Pressed by me for the names of routers that other clients of Demon's use, I was told that these included routers manufactured by Netgear, Cisco and Draytek but that this is not an exhaustive list.
In summary, Demon says that any off-the-shelf modem that supports ADSL 2+ should work.
To return to the question that I first asked, therefore, I would be grateful if anyone can give me the names of any ADSL 2+ modems which work optimally with Airports Express or Extreme.
If anyone reading this post has any experience they can share, that would be very kind and much appreciated.
If any ADSL 2+ modem will do as well as another, it would be helpful to know that also.

  • Can anyone recommend an ethernet modem for AirPort Express?

Well I think I want an ethernet modem as I don't know the differences between those and routers or whatever. I just want to access my broadband ADSL Demon account wirelessly with my AirPort Express. I'm currently 'using' an XBridgeDSL bought from the Apple store, but it's proving unreliable (I constantly have to reset it by turning the power on and off). The only other one Apple sell which seems suitable is the D-Link but that apparently only works if one computer is using the connection. Any ideas?

The only true Ethernet Modem that passes the IP address to the Express is the X-Modem but unfortunately it is as yet still not available due to manufacturing delays. However you can use an ADSL Router by switching off the distribute IP addresses in the Airport Express. The only down side to that is that you may have to configure port forwarding rules in the router if you want to do iChat AV conferencing etc.

  • Best Compatible Ethernet Modem for Airport Express

Hi, I'm thinking about buying an AirPort Express. I've had one before but it broke. I used it in conjunction with a D-Link modem however it would not work well if i was running more than one computer. Basically I just want a modem that is easy to set up and works great. Any Ideas?
    Thanks
    Rob

Hi Thanks for your reply. Basically I want to create a wireless network with the airport express to run more than one computer off. so what else would I need? Previously I used the airport express and a D-Link 300-T ADSL Modem. However I had trouble running more than one computer off it.
    Thanks

  • Which Ethernet DSL Modem for Airport Extreme?

I was lucky enough to receive an Airport Extreme Base Station for Christmas and would like to know opinions and experiences with DSL Ethernet Modems and which are compatible. Most seem to have a download bandwidth limit of 8Mbps which is what I currently receive but eventually I would hope to get a higher speed without having to replace the modem again.
I currently have a Netgear DG834PN wireless router/modem which has a WAN port. Until I get a new modem would it be possible to connect the Airport Extreme to this after turning off the router side on the Netgear? If this is possible is this a better solution to buying a modem or will I benefit from just having a dedicated modem.
Thanks in advance for any replies and Happy Christmas.

As a disclaimer, I reside in New Zealand, but the findings should still bear relevance.
I have used Alcatel (also marketed under the 'Thomson' name) ADSL modems for the last 7-8 years, and haven't had an issue. One of the reasons I choose Alcatel is they are the leading manufacturer of the DSLAMs which sit on the ISPs side of the connection.
We've just upgraded from an Alcatel One Touch Pro to a Thomson SpeedTouch 546(i) v6, and I'm very impressed. Testing shows the modem syncs at a higher speed than other brands such as D-Link, Netgear, etc and is more tolerant of line noise. I've never experienced the drop outs which certain brands featuring the Texas Instruments AR7 chip do - for more on this, take a look here.
I recommend talking to your more tech savvy neighbours and friends (preferably using the same ISP) and see what their experiences are.

    Hi Jake,
Is it connecting to the Router or Modem?
Is the new Router using maybe WPA2 encryption? If so, G4s can only do WPA or less.

The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Connecting wireless modem and airport express

I currently run internet with an old Motoirola Sideboard cable modem and Airport Express - previous version. All runs well. Now my Optus provider has upgraded my service with a Premium account for higher speed. They have also given me a free wi fi Cisco modem - DPQ3925. How can I replace my old Motorola modem and still maintain Air play etc with my new modem using Airport Express. I need to know exactly wire per wire help - please, if possible - Thanks

    Hi - I have a similar issue.
I have a new macbook pro, ATV (3rd Gen) and AXn (purely for Airplay of itunes).
All three are wirelessly connected to my HG556a Huawei WiFi Router.
The Macbook pro and ATV work fine and can see each other for airplay mirroring and itunes.
The AX connects and comes up in Airport Utility (AU) and itunes shortly after you turn it on, but if you either dont use it or stop using it and switch to ATV or whatever it dissapears from itunes and AU says it cant find it. Randomly the light on the AX stays green the whole time.
I have to switch the AX off and on to get it back working again (i.e. itunes and AU can see it).
Following other forum posts I've set the AX up by hard connecting it to my router, setting a static iP and reserving ports 5353 and 3689 to that address. I've also turned off ipv6 or whatever using the networksettings Terminal code string. I have also repaired permissions with disk utility!
It still dissapears from available options in iTunes and AU. ideas?

  • Mini-UPS solution for Airport Express

Hello Airport community! This is my first post.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with a battery backup (UPS) for Airport Express'. I have a larger UPS for my Time Capsule which is the main access point. I've hardwired this one into the network to broadcast the same network but extend the range. If the power goes off, since a number of devices are connected to the second, I'd like to have it on back up as well. However, it's installed very in a tidier manner in a smaller area – no room here for a big APC UPS.
I've been able to find 12 V battery backups, but nothing for the Airport since it's a 120/240 V input.
Anyone have any ideas of how this might be accomplished?
    Cheers,
    David

As a completely different kind of solution.. Although John's battery and car inverter idea is creative.. and will work..
Use an extreme or something else that is dc powered.. You can buy a cheap second hand extreme for $30-50 on ebay or whoever has your second hand market. It can even be a different brand.. tp-link, edimax etc.. most are 12v which is excellent.. then power it down the ethernet. So you don't even need a power point.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with a battery backup (UPS) for Airport Express'. I have a larger UPS for my Time Capsule which is the main access point.
Plug the 12v power supply into your UPS.. with the TC.. and buy a set of injectors for ethernet..
    They look like this.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/PoE-Power-Over-Ethernet-Injector-Splitter-Adpater-Kit-/3 60843249285?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item5403ef0685
Just a few dollars.. they passively use the extra pairs to carry power over the ethernet wiring.. you can also buy active sets but they are more expensive but keep the line at gigabit.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/TP-Link-POE200-Power-over-Ethernet-Adapter-Kit-Injector- Splitter-5-9-12V-DC-Out-/181210762297?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a3100cc39
I have not hunted for cheapest but I have tried to keep price in mind.
There was a time when Apple used POE in the old domed Extreme.. and that was very handy.. the Express should have always had it.. it is a natural to power over ethernet rather than require power outlet next to it.

  • PIN-based guest access for airport express

how do I setup PIN-based guest access for airport express?
I have a 2010 iMac OS X 10.6.8 and an Airport Express of the same era.
    Thanx in advanced...
    Siegfried

    Hello Bob,
Thank you for your time on this.  I apologize for not giving you a more complete picture of what was going on.
I should have included that I had already performed the steps that you shared and had gotten to the place where I would enter the PIN.
The problem was that, after entering a PIN that I had come up with, the "continue" button never became active.  I called Apple Care and ended up talking to 3 different people before I found someone that knew the answer.  The answer is that the guest computer (client) MUST be present inorder for me to complete the setup.  So, problem is now solved.  Thanx...

  • Is there any antenna for airport express?

I think i´m having problemas with the signal of my airport express and all the readings i made always refer antennas for airport extreme base station.
My question is, if there is any antenna for airport express that don´t needs an extreme base station.
    Thanks

    Pentium IV   Windows XP Pro

Two quick things to check using AirPort Utility on both devices:
    On your "main" base station
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label located just below the row of icons
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Click Update to save your changes.
If you don't see this option, you likely have an older AirPort Extreme that does not support the "extend" feature. Please clarify on the version that you have
    On your AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Name = Same name as your main network
Check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as your main router
Wireless Password = Same password as your main network
    Confirm Password
    Click Update to save settings
If you do not see the "Extend a wireless network setting", you may have an older AirPort Express, or if you are sure that you have a newer 802.11n model, try holding down the option key while you click on the selection box to see if the "Extend" setting will appear.
Assuming no major obstructions between the main router and area that needs more wireless coverage, a good starting location for the Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance between the main router and the area that needs more coverage.
As I said, this feature works very well if major obstructions do not come into play.

  • How to find MAC address for WAN port for Airport Express 2nd Gen.

The New Airport Express has a LAN and a WAN ethernet ports. How can I find the MAC address for the WAN ethernet port as my Service Provider needs it for provisioning....I can fid MAC address for Ethernet and for two wireless 2.4 & 5GHz but not for WAN ethernet port using Airport Utility 6.1

Many thanks for the swift response. However, there is no WAN MAC address on the box or on the device anywhere. I even used magnifying glass to find one .
The airport utility shows only three mac addresses. One for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz and one fo the ethernet (LAN port) whereas there is another ethernet port in the device mentioned as WAN port and I am still not able to find the MAC address for the WAN ehternet port for Airport Express (2nd Generation).
Will appreciate a response to make th device work wiht my service provider as providing them the WAN mac address is a must. Had there been an option for cloning mac address, the issue would have not been there.
Many thanks again - in advance.

  • How to use iPhone as modem for Airport Extreme?

My modem is kinda dead, but still I need to keep the network running.
Is there any way to use an iPhone as modem for Airport?
    Heeeeelp!

Is there any way to use an iPhone as modem for Airport?
To do this, the iPhone would need to provide a wired Ethernet signal to the AirPort Extreme. Even if this might be possible, it would  require some major....and likely unsupported surgery.
Suggest that you post in the iPhone support area for questions about the iPhone.

  • HT1178 How setup and configure time capsule with ADSL modem for WiFi internet

For my first time time capsule 2TB set up,would like to know about configuration time capsule with ADSL modem for use WiFi internet!

You will want to turn off the WiFi on your modem (if there is WiFi on your modem). Connect the TC and the modem together with an Ethernet cable. Then, turn on your TC and set it up to be in bridged mode, connection type 'Ethernet'.

  • Which ADSL Router for TC?

I've just bought Time Capsule to discover it doesn't include a ADSL router. I don't have one - can anyone recommend a decent one that will be easy to set up with TC?
    Thanks
    Acculess

You are much better off with an Ethernet ADSL modem for use with a Time Capsule as the TC is a router itself. Something like the X-Modem M3 would mean that you don't have to mess about with port forwarding an suchlike on an ADSL router.
