Hello - After having good luck for awhile then much bad luck using a Belkin setup, I'm going to switch to Apple gear. HERE'S MY QUESTION: I will be physically connecting the "base station" to my cable modem and my PPC G4 dual 500 running OS X 10.3.9, and then, more importantly, using an Airport
Express to connect to my G5 dual 2 gig which has an AirPort card already. Which AirPort "base station" should I buy THAT WILL WORK WITH 10.3.9? (I'm pretty sure I just saw, on the Apple website, that the new AirPort Extreme Base Station requires 10.4.4, so I'm a little wary about buying the newest one.) I would so greatly appreciate anyone who has a good answer about this. Thank you very much.

Nick, either of the Airport Base Stations will work.
The Airport Express and the Airport Extreme Base Stations will work with the Slower 802.11b compliant (SLOWER) and the 802.11g (FASTER) connections.
In other words if you have an older Mac with OS9 or you have a newer computer with OSX 10.4 The Airport Routers will work.

The 4.0.1 and 5.0 are two separate versions as installing 4.0.1 over 5.0 will just give you the old 4.0.1 as the end result.
The 5.0 is partially as a security update in place of 4.0.2.
The Skype extension was only for to make it so you can dial phone numbers on a web page in the separate Skype program right so if you were not using it then no need for the Skype extension for the separate Skype application to work.

Each time I go online to try to get any updates, it always comes back saying Error. In other words, I can't start Time Machine because I can't get any software updates. Anyone else experiencing problems with Seagate software updates?

If you want to use Time Machine the Seagate software is unnecessary. The drive is probably ntfs format which is not for the Mac.
Manually preparing a new disk for Time Machine

In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select the disk you want to use with Time Machine.
Optional: If you want to partition the disk, click the Partition tab and select a layout. Make sure "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is selected in the Format menu for the partition that will be used for backups. Click Apply.
Click the Erase tab.
Optional: If you want to securely erase the disk, click Security Options to configure, then click OK.
Click Erase.
After erasing, open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences and configure as described in the section above.

I just saw that on the Apple Support site that "Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme device", just as you have suggested.
Why is the newest model of the Airport Extreme, which is the model I have, an exception to the Time Machine compatibility?
The following information is from Apple website:
Time Machine works with:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard drive (any model)
External USB hard drive connected to AirPort Time Capsule (any model)
An external hard drive connected to your Mac
Use the Time Machine pane of System Preferences to choose your backup disk(s).
Additional Information
Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme device.

Help! Which Airport Base Unit do I need??

I'm very confused and can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I have a graphite 700mhz G3 imac running OS 10.3.9 and am getting a 800mhz Flat Panel G4 imac which will also be running OS 10.3.9. I may upgrade to Tiger at some point on both computers. I know I need a regular airport card for the G3 and think I need a regular one for the G4 as well. But, which base unit do I need? I'm assuming I'll have to use the Graphite or snow original Airport base units as opposed to any of the newer ones. Is that correct? Am I able to use a different base unit that will be compatible with my computers?

So if I understand correctly, I could use 2 original Airport cards in the Macs I have and as it stands now, with OS 10.3.9 I can use the original snow or Graphite Airport and have that work?

But, if I upgrade to 10.4 then I would be able to use Airport extreme, etc.. along with the original Airport cards and that would work?
You can actually use the new AirPorts with your current Macs now, it's just that you won't be able to administer them until you upgrade to 10.4.

Airport extreme not compatible with xbox live?

Ive had this problem for a long while now and are getting desperate. Basically when i go on xbox live the connection is really really bad. It's not all the time, rarely it will work fine but most of the time the connection is awful.
I know the problem isn't because of the location of the xbox since, the connection is strong in my laptop in that room and we have also used a wifi signal analyzer in the room aswell. It's not because of where i live since i have a friend across the road who's xbox connection works fine. We also have an xbox dowstairs much closer to the router which also has the same problem. Im almost convinced its because of the aiport extreme.
We have an aiport extreme which acts as the router and a netgear which is the modem. The airport extreme has to be in bridge mode or else i get a double nat problem. I think its something to do with the airport extreme and netgear conflicting, if they where i have no idea how to solve it or even if thats the case.
We tried taking the airport extreme out of bridge mode and then turning nat off on the netgear but then we couldn't connect to the internet at all.
Please help me, i really need this problem solved. Its really starting to annoy me.

Im almost convinced its because of the aiport extreme.
Unfortunately, the key issue here may be that the AirPort Extreme is not on the Xbox list of "compatible" routers.

I know of no way to change that fact.
We have an aiport extreme which acts as the router and a netgear which is the modem.
You do not have a Netgear modem, you have a Netgear modem/router or gateway. That is why the AirPort must be in Bridge Mode. In Bridge Mode, the AirPort is not acting as a router, it simply passes through the network information from the Netgear gateway.
If you want the AirPort to act as the main router for the network, then the Netgear device must act as a pure, Bridge Mode modem. Netgear support may be able to tell you if it is possible to configure the device that way.
But, even if it is possible to configure the Netgear this way and the AirPort as the main router, the fact still remains that the AirPort is not listed as being "compatible" with Xbox, so there are no guarantees that this will help.
