Which Airport do I have?

Airport Admin is showing me Firmware v. 4.0.8 I believe its either Graphite or Snow. Does anyone know which Airport I have? I am also trying to set it and an Express up using Windows Vista. The Airport Base station is running fine, but which version Admin do I need to set up the Express?

Apple never produced a version of the Airport Utility for Windows which supported the "Dual Ethernet" base station. You need to use either a Mac (and the MacOS utility provided by Apple) or for a PC the Java-based third party utility available at http://gicl.cs.drexel.edu/people/sevy/airport/
The Airport Express is configurable using the Windows version of the Airport utiltiy software provided here. This utility works fine under Windows XP. I have never tried it with Windows Vista. The most up to date Windows utility (version 5.x) which supports the Airport Express and all Airport Extreme Base Station models is not (easily) available for download from Apple's web site, but that version does work fine under both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
I suggest you avoid all this trouble and just use one of your many Macs to do the configuation. There is no need whatsoever to do the configuration from a PC if you have a Mac to do the job.

  • How to find out which Airport Version I have

How is it possible to find out which Aiport Extreme and Express I have. I searched for Airport Overiew but cannot find specs.

Open AirPort Utility and click on your AirPort Extreme icon, then click directly on the AirPort Extreme heading just to the right of the icon and info about your model will appear.
Do the same for the AirPort Express.

  • Help! How can I tell which Airport Card I have installed in my Mac Pro?

I bought a mac pro from comp usa in December, without the airport extreme option. I later got an airport card from apple on-line and took it to my Apple store to have it installed. I just don't know if it's the newer 802.11n card or an old 802.11g?
Any way to tell this in system profiler it just says:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.80.79.1)
    Thanks a lot!

There is only one model of AirPort card for the Mac pro ( it is draft 802.11n compatible ). Some other intel Mac's may or may not have had the 802.11n enabler update applied. The enabler is/was a $1.99 download from Apple, so priced as the FTC deemed that it "added" features rather than revised existing firmware.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

Update your operating system to 10.7.5 (Lion) or 10.8.x (Mountain Lion)
Use or borrow another Mac that is running 10.7.5 or 10.8.x to install the AirPort Extreme

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

hi i would like to know how to extend the range of my time capsule wifi network(500G 802.11n) using an airport express. i have a double storey home and would like to extend range to my upstairs bedrooms.i have a time capsules network setup via a netgear adsl.i have a second imac upstairs which connects to time capsule wifi network (it is within range as it is directly abobe on 1st floor)

This is called an "Extended wireless network".

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.
AirPort Utility 6.3.1 for Mac - Support - Apple
Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message.

  • I want to use AirPlay and share an external hard drive, which AirPort should I use?

I am looking into buying an AirPort. I want to be able to share an external hard drive over it and use the AirPlay feature (by plugging in my speakers through an audio jack). It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. Are there any ways around this, and does anyone have suggestions on which AirPort to buy to achieve this?

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.
    Thanks

  • Which Airport card do I need for an iMac G4 Flat Screen 15"?

Hi, I have an iMac G4 (flat screen, with silver arm and round base), 15".
I'd be extremely grateful if someone could let me know which Airport card I need for this Mac and also whether or not I also require an adaptor. I have looked this up on the Apple site and also in 'The Flatscreen iMac for Dummies' book (I'm a complete technophobe, I'm afraid!), but am none the wiser.
If possible, model numbers for the Airport card and adaptor that I do need would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jeremy

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and click on More Info, or if you're running Mac OS 9, choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu. Check the speed of the computer's CPU; if it is below 1GHz, you need the regular AirPort card, with the AirPort Extreme card being used on newer iMacs. No iMac G4 requires an adaptor to use an AirPort card.

  • How do I tell what version airport express I have?  Airport Utility says this version does not support this base station.  What to do, how to update?

I tried to add an older airport express to my network that I had not been using.  It shows up in Airport Utility but Airport Utility says that this version of Airport Utility Dies not support this base station.   I am running airport utility V6.3.4 on a mac mini running OS X 10.10.  Not sure which airport express it is, nor how to check.  I assume I need a firmware upgrade on the Airport Express, but not sure how to do this without Airport Utility.  I tried to download an older version of Airport Utility, but could not install because it does not support OS X 10.10   Any ideas other than throwing a perfectly good airport express away?

Don't throw the AE away. It is still very useful as I have both the old & new each work well (sometimes the sound keeps dropping out but I think that has to do with the wirless settings!!!)
You need Airport Utility 5.6.1 which works in 10.10 - I managed to download a .dmg from the net but not sure how I could get it to you.
The new utility doesn't support  the old AEs unfortunately which I have and Apple have no intention of allowing a utility that will cover all
    AEs.
Try and get a version 5.6.1.

  • How to know which airport card?

Hi, I have an iBook G4 with the small display; an acquiantance has the same laptop and she can use the wireless internet at our house no problem. Now I know I don't need a base station to be able to log into wireless but I don't know which airport card I should get; express, extreme etc ... any clues?

Rubens, Welcome to the discussion area!
That's easy! Every iBook G4 (without built-in wireless) uses the AirPort Extreme card.
