Which anti-virus app?

In order to get into the network at my university I must posses a anti-virus package. They're offering for free F-Secure or Virex.There is also ClamXav that I've heard of. If I have to do this, which of all the anti-virus apps would you recommend? Also, Is it possible to just set up a standard user account with the anti-av on it and not have it affect any of my other accounts?
Thanks Andrew

See my "Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware" FAQ for my recommendations as well as a list of some recent Mac OS X security threats that have emerged, including Trojans, rootkits, and spyware. The FAQ also addresses some of the usual arguments against installing an anti-virus solution on a Mac that often arise in discussions of this topic.
While some believe that anti-virus solutions are not required on a Mac, I feel that's ignoring the fact that threats are emerging and that security exposures continue to be found, albeit eventually closed, in Mac OS X, as in any other operating system. Even Apple now recommends that one should "check for viruses."
Good luck!

    Antivirus software is not really necessary on a Mac, however if you receive many emails and forward them to PC users it may help them. I don't use any AV SW on my Macs. If you want to use one to detect a virus on emails, get the freeware antivirus application for Macs - ClamXav @ http://www.clamxav.com/ .

    The System Preferences >Security >Firewall is a incoming one and very user simple.
    There is the full outgoing and incoming firewall via the Terminal
    NoobProof and WaterRoof that can manage it with a GUI.
    Mac's have a System Preferences > Security > General > Safe Downloads list which basically checks your downloads to make sure it's not a trojan.
    That's about it for the malware checks built in, most all malware is for Windows and doesn't affect OS X, but if your passing or using Windows files, you may want to use the free ClamXav to scan them.
    ClamXav is non-intrusive, other anti-malware for Mac's can be harmful as they run as root level and Apple changes things which breaks the anti-malware software and really causes more hassle than the 0 viruses Mac's get.
    So most Mac users don't need to mess with the Firewall or anti-malware, best for them to leave it alone.
    Though if one installs software from pirate or questionable sources then all bets are off.

  • Which anti virus software should I install and will it slow my MacBook Pro

    Hello, in light of the Macs being infected by the Flash Virus, which anti virus is recommended and will it slow my computer down a whole lot?

    Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
    The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware that affects a fully-updated installation of Mac OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
    Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
    A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
    “Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
    Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
    Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
    Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
    Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use ClamXav — nothing else.

  • I know I have a virus.. Why won't safari accept my downloading of the anti-virus app? What do I do?

    How can I download a anti-virus app?

    First, what is the problem you are having that makes you believe you have malware? Be aware that, in my experience, the vast majority of people who believe they have malware on a Mac actually do not.
    Second, what do you mean that Safari won't "accept" downloading an anti-virus app? What are you trying to download, and from where, and what specifically happens when you try?
    Finally, note that there's a lot of bad anti-virus software out there. You need to read my Mac Malware Guide to learn more about the threats and how to protect yourself, and if you choose to use anti-virus software at the end of all this, you should use one of the programs it recommends.

  • Anti-virus app

    Just purchased macbook pro.  Do I need to download an antivirus progrom.  If I do, does anyone have any suggestions.

    Please NOTE: There is an app called "MacKeeper" This program is NOT good for your Mac, so do NOT download it or you'll have lots of problems.
    You really don't need an anti-virus App, Macs come really secure out of the box. Just update:

    Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
    Back up all data before making any changes.

  • How to detect which Anti Virus is installed?

    I want to know how can I detect which anti virus is installed on the system using C#?
    Jassim Rahma

    You can use WMI to query this information.  The code to do so would work like this:
    ManagementObjectSearcher searcher = new ManagementObjectSearcher(@"root\SecurityCenter2", "SELECT * FROM AntiVirusProduct");
    ManagementObjectCollection result = searcher.Get();
    if (result.Count > 0)
        foreach (ManagementObject item in result)
            Console.WriteLine("Your computer is protected by: {0}", item["displayName"]);
    else
        Console.WriteLine("Your computer is not protected!");
    Note that the location on that first line might be "root\SecurityCenter" on some systems.  It might be best to run this portion of code for both "root\SecurityCenter" and "root\SecurityCenter2".

  • App Killers and Anti Virus Apps

    New android user do you need to use either of these Apps?

    No to the app killer. Don't waste your time. I don't use an anti virus, but I did for a while. I honestly don't know how effective they are since its a fairly new issue. I did have AVG for a few months and I liked it. It scanned everything that I downloaded. It did slow things down a bit and I think it also drained the battery just a bit, which is why I dumped it. It can't hurt to load one, but I just got tired of the constant scanning. I'll take my chances for now.

  • Which anti virus software should i buy

    i'm wondering which one others have bought that works well for my new macbook pro

    You don't need anti-virus for Mac's, been 20 something years since the last virus, and that was before the Internet
    Most anti-malware installs itself deep into the OS and causes problems, you don't need that. OS X isn't that insecure yet.
    Now anyone can get "Trojaned" or fooled into installing something, no anti-virus can really defend against that.
    At this time, perhaps all you need is a free, run as you need, malware checker for Windows malware on files before sending them onto PC users.
    The free ClamXAv is good enough for that.

    McAfee is not a anti-virus it just reports threats.

  • Which Anti Virus?

    Hi,
    Any thoughts on an Anti Virus program for an iBook? (running 10.2.8) - obviously there is norton but is there anything written for Apple?
    Also do Macs suffer from spyware - or is this a pc thing?
    Many thanks
    JC

    From what I can gather there is no real need for anti-virus software for apples. We have seen in the past few weeks that OSX is not completely secure, but until apple has many more users it is pretty worthless for people to write viruses for Macs.
    If you are dead set on putting an Anti Virus software on your computer I have heard stories of Norton actually hirting the performance of Macs.
    My school offers Sophos protection for macs, but I believe they only offer protection to large scale users such as schools and busineses.

  • Which anti virus protection: Norton, Nod32 or AVG

    I am going to buy an antivirus protection, because I will be using Parallels (so that I can use AutoCAD).
    My friend advised 'Norton'. However, Apple Care 'phone support suggested either 'AVG' or 'Nod32'. He also said, ask the forum, so... over to you.
    Many thanks for any advice you can give me!

    In Windows, check the Add/Remove Programs area for "Parallels Internet Security". If not installed, it should show up as an option to 'Install Parallels Internet Security' in the Virtual Machine menu (second from the bottom).
    JoeyR - it's a one-year trial version, with an option to purchase a permanent key at the end.
    Personally, I use Symantec/Norton - but, that's part of the corporate security suite in my Windows image that serves as the basis for my Parallels VM.
