Which applications are Intel-compatible?

In the System Profiler, I have four kinds of applications-- Classic, Native (preferred) or Classic, PowerPC, and Universal. I'm migrating applications over to a new Intel iMac. What's the compatibility with these various applications?
Here are my guesses:
Classic- not compatible at all
Native (preferred) or Classic- not sure about this one
PowerPC- might or might not run under Rosetta
Universal- completely compatible
Corrections or comments, please.

I think that Native (preferred) or Classic applications are applications like The Sims that can run under OS X and OS 9; they may run under Rosetta. You may be able to find them on the lists on Kappy's guide.
2) Some of the links mentioned in that article are no longer valid (they don't exist)
One link requires a MacFixIt Pro subscription, all other links work (I just tested them).
3) Some links to information about compatible applications haven't been updated in over a year. I bet there are some applications with compatible versions now that didn't exist a year ago.
Information on Universal applications (at least, Apple's guide and MacUpdate) is still being updated. Information about Rosetta may be outdated, but you can easily check whether an application has become Universal by checking the Universal lists; also, if an application doesn't run in Rosetta and hasn't been updated to be Universal then chances are that it won't run on Intel Macs (incompatibility issues with Rosetta, if fixable, have been fixed long ago).
So I think the four types of applications have been covered :
Classic - won't run at all; Native/Classic and PowerPC - may run under Rosetta, see the Rosetta lists and check whether Universal versions have been released just to make sure; Universal - will run, no need to check since they already appear as Universal on your Mac.

  • How can I find which applications are using the most power?

I have recently noticed a full charge of power doesn't last as long as it used to on my iPad 2.  Is there some way to determine which applications are using the most power?
I have been monitoring my home network router accesses and have noticed the iPad logs accesses every 15 seconds.  This only happened recently.  It had been well behaved and only accessing once or twice a day before.  I installed the most recent iTunes upgrade, per suggestions during a Sync.  The problems seemed to occur after this update.  I have gone through all the settings and have minimized the applications requiring higher power (I switch off the location services unless I'm away from home.  Likewise, I turn off my cellular carrier unless I'm away from home, etc.)
In short, how can I maximize my power usage (aside from turning it off)?
    Thanks.
    Dave

    Thanks for responding so quickly.
I'm really trying to find out why the battery is depleting much faster than it used to all of a sudden.  I used to be able to put a full charge on it and it would last about 5 to 6 days with normal use (normal for me).  Now that battery only lasts about 2 to 3 days with the same use.
I DO recharge it when it needs to be charged but this is indicating there is something else (new) that is causing the power drain.

  • Which application are able to use a raid for performance?

Hello. I'm considering the setup of a simple raid (two internal 500G hard drives, using Disk Utility's software raid option) to speed up Photoshop. Will the speed gain be limited to applications that can have scratch disks assigned to them (Photoshop, Illustrator), or can others use them, too, maybe including the system itself?
    Thanks

Software RAID produces a single logical Volume that the System sees as indistinguishable from a regular volume. Any Application can use it for any purpose.
A RAID gets its speed by having the B-Drive pre-reading the expected next block of data while the A-Drive is transferring its just-read data. This allows for the seek time of the B-drive to happen concurrently with the transfer time of the A-drive, providing a speed-up. Using a single RAID Volume to Read input, read and write scratch, and write output moves the read/write head away from the intended data files and defeats the speedup.
In addition, Mac OS X keeps very little of the System and Applications in RAM at any given time. Parts are paged in when needed, and most of the System and Applications are already loaded into "page frames", ready to be paged in when needed. Any disk activity that moves the disk read/write head away from the System area slows down your entire Mac.
For this reason, some user choose to set up a Boot drive, that contains only System. Library, Applications, and the hidden Unix files including Paging. Users files and Applications Libraries such as Clip Art and itunes collections are moved to a different Volume. RAM Memory is increased to avoid the use of scratch except in the most extreme cases.

  • How to find which applications are running

I cannot figure out where on the HD to look to see which apps on my iMac are open.
Other than the ones highlighted in the dock, can there be others open?
I was ejecting my external HD and a message reads 'it is in use, try quitting applications'.
As far as I can see, I have quit them.

Every application that is open goes into the dock and has a blue light under it until the application is closed.... if that application is not added to the dock, then the icon just disappears...
If application is added to the dock, then when you end the program the little blue light under the icon disappears.

  • Which Camcorders are Mac Compatible.

I am looking at purchasing a personal Camcorder and want to make sure that it is compatible with my Macs.I was considering getting a camcorder that records to a hard drive rather then miniDV or DVD. Any suggests in brands or models.
    thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The answer depends on which version of iLife you are running. With iMovie 6 and earlier, the best camcorder is still miniDV. Other types will require you to translate the files, may require you to purchase additional software, and significant loss of quality can result. iMovie '08 supports a wider variety of movie file formats and may support some hard drive models.
To get a detailed answer, go to the iMovie category, choose the forum for the version you are using, and do a search or post your question. This has been discussed many times there, and you can find lots of helpful information.
    Regards.

There are various home grown lists out there, none of which gives you a CERTAIN assurance that any particular drive will work. The only CERTAIN disk that will work is the one that is embedded in Time Capsule. Alternatively, if you have a Fry's Electronics store close, you can just pick a drive, try it out and return it if it doesn't work, by simply saying "it doesn't work with my system".

I recently uploaded 10.8, but I have a number of VALUABLE old files which I can no longer read because "power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I retrieve them"?

Here is a post I assembled for another with a similar problem:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3. Upgrade to an Intel compatible versions of your software, or find alternatives that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

Peter, Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tip & Tricks sub-forum, which is really a repository for, well "tips & tricks." Maybe our MOD, Steve Grisetti, will move this out ot the main, Adobe Premiere Elements forum. That said, Adobe AfterEffects is a stand-alone program, for compositing video. It is not a plug-in, nor does it directly interface with PrE, as it can with Premiere Pro, if purchased in a suite. Still, the work in PrE can go to AE, and the work in AE can come back into PrE, though not in the direct line, that it can with one of the suites with PrPro and AE, via Adobe Dynamic Link (ADL). There are also several 3rd party providers, but one does need to do a bit of looking, on the 3rd party provider's Web site, to see if PrE is supported. Good luck, Hunt
