Which audio interfaces work well with CoreAudio?

A number of older USB and Firewire audio interfaces do not appear to work properly with Tiger's CoreAudio, which promises major advantages in very low latency recording. Without a proper CoreAudio driver, audio can be reduced to mostly noise with just a trace of audio remaining.
This information is difficult to find until you actually try to use a device and find that it doesn't work. Several devices I tried out last summer right after Tiger was released did not work, though they promised fixes, but I don't want to have to pay more restocking fees for devices that don't work
Could someone post a list (or a link to a list) of devices that DO work? Thanks!

Hi there,
don't buy M-Audio interfaces! I had USB and FireWire audio interfaces from them, their hardware is ok, but the software (drivers) suck! I had extremely bad latency problems. I even started a thread about it a while ago. Now I use an EDIROL FA-66 FireWire audio interface. It's a little more expensive than the M-Audio, but it works and it does NOT need any drivers because it's fully Core Audio compatible! Works good for me. I've heard similar good opinions on the Presonus FW interfaces. Hope that helps!

It depends on how much you want to spend and how many channels you want to record/playback at once. So any decent (normally) external audio interface should do provided it also has robust ASIO drivers for your operating system. Don't go  for a gamer's interface though as they are not optimised for audio recording.

  • Which Digidesign interfaces work best with Logic Pro ?

Can anyone tell which of these work best with Logic if any at all?

    - M-Box Pro

    Thanks for the posts
After hearing complaints about latency, driver
    issues, horrible quality,incompatibility with there
plugs in logic as well as no chance to stand against
performances and sound quality of other hardware half
there prices i thought to ask.
Wow. All that??? And then they recommend Migraine-Audio to you??? I don't think those posters know what they are talking about.
I've been using Logic since it could be used with Digidesign hardware, from version 4.8.1, and it has always worked very well.
It does pay to research the setting up of a DAW computer, as it is almost never just "plug-n-play" like many people believe. But once it is set up, it can run for years without problems. Most people experience problems because they change the setup, install free plugins, change audio gear, every other day of the week, and of course, that makes for a very unstable situation. No wonder they complain. But it is their tech-ethic they should be complaining about, not the equipment.
Can anyone verify there set ups and latency?
Here's one extensive test I did on my Digi 002R:
    http://nicksevilla.com/logicpro-som/LogicTests.html
The latency is the same as with other comparable FireWire interfaces. Not more, and not less.
i wont drag this out into a long post i just want a
round about, all logic users in other forums seem to
be against Digi hardware, most advised to buy the
cheapest possible M-Audio interface just to run M
Powered Pro Tools if i realy need PT at all.
Really??? All of them???And did they know they are advising you to buy stuff that actually does NOT work properly??? Shame on those posters you read, as Digidesign drivers are a LOT more stable that the Migraine-Audio ones. Digidesign themselves told me to stay away from M-Audio... so you read into that whatever you like. I'll keep that advise from them.
    Cheers

  • Which Wireless Router works well with Satellite A200-401

Just about to buy a Satellite A200-401 notebook can anyone suggest a good affordable wireless router that works well with this?
    steve

Hm, thats a strange question because I doesnt depends on the machine, more on the installed wireless card. But usually a Netgear router is always a good choice...they are reliable, dont need much power and you can extend your network range with these special Nergear "Range externders".
I have a Netgear WGR614 and it works like a charm, it has everything you need.

  • Which bluetooth headset works well with iPhone

I was very happy with a Plantronics bluetooth headset for a long time, until it broke. Now I have tested three Plantonics bluetooth sets with my iPhone4 and all had connection problems, which I never had with my Android phone. People keep saying "I can't hear you" unless I put the iPhone in front of my mouth. I don't know why. So, which bluetooth headset have worked well for you with your iPhone?

there are 2 types of bluetooth headsets
the traditional headset which is typical mono and connect to 1 ear and only do phone calls
then there is the a2dp which is typical stereo and play all audio also games, video and music
a2dp is typical bigger being stereo and all and often cost more

  • Which audio interfaces are compatible with a Lightning to USB Camera adapter???

Would like to use my iPad Mini with Lightning Adapter in conjunction with an audio interface. What are the requirements for a device that would accept the adapter (what type of USB input/output). Thanks!

    It should work.
Reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
And, just is case, did you remember to turn the camera on after it was connected to the iPad?

  • This is an embarassment! What audio interface works reliably with 10.5.2?

For years Mac's have been the computer of choice for professional musicians and I was an early adherent dating back to the 80's and the first Apple MacIntoshes using MOTU Digital Performer V 1. I wandered away to PC land to do some C+ programming and recently returned with a brand new MacBook Pro only to find that the audio interfaces I have tried do not work with 10.5.2. I have tried a Firewire Interface from Tascam and a USB interface from M-Audio. Both created problems ranging from system crashes to simply not working. Is there an interface that works reliably with Leopard, 10.5.2? I can't try them all? The hardware manufacturers are scurrying to make their stuff work. Why is it so hard and why don't we hear more from Apple on this issue? Musician's have been a large part of the Mac universe. How about some support?

Ok, Bucesam, you're freaking me out. I do periodic recording with my PowerBook using a Firebox. I've used my MacBook Pro several times since I got it, too. I just upgraded the MacBook to 10.5.2. Are you telling me the next time I need it for remote recording it won't work? I can't take time to check now, but will, probably right before I need it. Dang. Like a complete idiot, I blithely overwrote the 10.4.11 backup after all seemed right with 10.5.2. If anything, I would have expected even better core audio implementation in 10.5.
Enough of my ignorant hand wringing. Can someone who knows what they're talking about (not me) speak to this before brucesam and I commit sepuku?

I have similar problem, my apple tv which has always worked properly with my Samsung tv will no longer play any audio after the latest 5.1 upgrade. Very frustrating as it was working perfectly before. I am starting to not trust apple upgrades until proven for example ios6 on iPhone with that stupid map app instead of google maps.
I just want to buy and hear my iTunes music and videos on my apple tv, could before cant now. Thank you apple. Time to pack up the apple tv and start torrenting without the ios-bs.
    Disheartened apple fan.

Welcome to the  discussion forums.
Try going to synching in the sources menu on your tv and selecting 'change itunes library', when it gives you the passcode check itunes to see if the tv is showing up as a new device, if so try entering the pass code. It may be that your tv is seeing itunes as a different library because of a recent upgrade.

  • I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. Is it Lion?

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.

  • Which audio interface to buy?

I have a macbook and have just bought logic express 8. I was going to get a Tascam US122L usb interface and a couple of pre-amps, but I have read horrible reviews about it especially saying it doesn't work with Leopard. I've read good things about Presonus Firepod but it's expensive at $429. Please can people reply and tell me which audio interfaces they are using succesfully with Leopard and Logic Express 8? Thanks!

The FirePod does present with problems and is for a lot of stuff going on. Is that what you really want? I have seen the sister of the FirePod, the FireBox, for as little as $249 or, with a free headphone or mic, for $299. I am using it with great success now and I had so many problems with it those problems were not MY fault! Now, I am more confident. The FireBox is great and, should you want to keep in touch with me as a helping hand (we could help each other as well!), we could do that.

  • Is there an audio interface for Imac with Leopard???

    Hi Guys,
Im new here. Just got my IMac 24" 2.8ghz 10.5.1 Leopard last week. I love everything about it but Im having a real hard time finding an audio interface to use with Garageband. I tried the M-Audio Firewire Solo...found out quick it is not compatible. So I figure what the ** i'll downgrade and go with the M-Audio Mobilepre USB audio interface...usb, no fuss no muss right...WRONG! It doesnt work either! I tried downloading the most current driver from M-audio's website but still no go. I guess Leopard and intel machines are hard to please. Also the audio interface has to have phantom power to run a condensor mic. So my questions to you guys is this:
    1. Are there any other audio interface options out there with phantom power for $200 or less that will run with my Imac ?
    2. If not, why in the ** would Apple design a machine with Garageband then not set it up to accept any reasonably priced audio interface currently on the market? Tell me Im just uninformed...say it isnt so!
Sorry if it sounds like Im aggravated...I am! I had hoped to get some recording time in this weekend but its looking doubtful now.
I did post this in the Garageband discussion as well...thanks.
Any help with the mobile preamp, other interface recommendations, etc. are greatly appreciated!

Could you be a little more specific about what you mean
by "not compatible" -- is it a lack of Leopard drivers,
    or what?
I haven't fiddled with GarageBand, but I have been using
[M-Audio's Fast Track Pro|http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackPro-main.html] with audacity, and it seems to
work OK. (My beta-release ov audacity has some stability
    problems, but I don't think they're M-Audio-related.)
Did you check M-Audio's web site for Leopard-compatible
drivers? The one for Fast Track Pro wasn't released 'til
mid December, if I remember correctly.
Although firewire is probably technically superior, I
went with USB to avoid conflicts between the audio box
and my Firewire external HD. There have been too many
reports of flakey operation with iMac firewire drivers.
I like the Fast Track Pro, but I'm not sure it would
be my first choice if I had it to do over. It's main
drawback is that it's USB 1.1 -- so, there are some
tradeoffs in the number of simultaneous I/O channels
    versus data rate and resolution.
I've listed a few other USB options worth exploring
below -- I believe they all have phantom power:
    [E-Mu 0404 USB|http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=610&subcategory=611&produc t=15185]
    [Edirol UA-25|http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=704&ParentI d=114]
    [Line6 TonePort UX2|http://line6.com/toneportux2>
I'm not sure what the situation is WRT Leopard-compatible
drivers for any of the above -- you'll have to check the
    manufacturers' web sites.
Check amazon.com and MusiciansFriend.com for prices; also,
be sure to check the customer comments on MusiciansFriend.
They're often very thorough and informative -- typically
    much better than Amazon's.
    ...rock on!
