Which base station am I connected to using WDS?

I think I successfully set up WDS at home. I have an Extreme set up as the main station on the second floor of my home. I have an Express set up as the remote station on the first floor. I used Airport Admin Utility to set up after hard resets to both.
If I carry my PowerBook from the second floor down to the first, will it automatically connect to the Express down there for a better signal? I have set both Airport units to use channel 2, interference robustness and a mulitcast rate of 5.5. It seems if I turn off IR, I have trouble connecting, so I'm leaving it on. The Extreme has the name of JCLR, and the Express' name is JCO, but the network is named JandC on both. Did I do it right?

Thanks Rich. But whenever I pick up my PowerBook and go downstairs to where the remote Express is, it stays connected to the Extreme upstairs, even though I'm just a few feet from the Express down there. If I wake it from sleep, it connects to the closest one correctly, but if I move around while online it doesn't, unless I turn my PowerBook's Airport card off and on again.
Any ideas? Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?

How do I know which AirPort base station I am connected to?

I have an AirPort network which consists of a Time Capsule and 2 AirPort Expresses connected in 'extended' mode. I want to test each of the AirPort Express units to ensure that they are doing what they should be (i.e. extending my network). However, I can't figure out how to determine which base station I'm actually connected to at any given moment. When I look at the AirPort status in the menu bar or at Network Preferences it simply tells me the name of the network that I'm connected to but not the specific AirPort unit. Is there any way to see this information?
For all I know, I could be connected to the Time Capsule no matter when in my home I'm located.

OK, let's recheck some settings as you definitely should not be picking up a wireless signal from the TC if you have an Express much closer to the computer.
Using AirPort Utility here, click your TC and click Manual Setup.
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Create a wireless network"
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Update to save any changes.
On each Express, using Manual Setup again.
Wireless Mode set to "Extend a wireless network"
The network name that the TC is creating should be displayed
There must be a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Please check your settings to verify. Then start with only one Express device and put it in a another room not too far away from the TC. Power it up and keep your laptop close to the Express. Using the "option" click on the Airport icon, test to see if you see the MAC address of the Express. Any luck? If yes, then power down the first Express and test the second the same way, etc.
The "extend" a wireless network feature works like the hub and spoke of a wheel. The main router is the hub and Express devices are at the ends of the spokes. Each Express communicates directly with the TC. There are no "relays" or "in between" devices. If the TC is at one end of the house, you may find that you get better results using fewer Expresses. It will take some experimenting to get the best location for each Express, etc.

Controlling which WDS base station a machine connects to... how?

I'm trying to isolate a problem I've got with a simple WDS configuration. Configuration is:
Airport Extreme (n) Fast Ethernet - main WDS
Airport Extreme (Snow) - relay
Airport Express - remote
Due to configuration, machines that connect to the Express can also 'just see' the other two machines. One of them (a CoreDuo iMac) is reporting very poor Airport signal strength - even when the Airport Express is plugged in within 2 feet of the machine. We think that it is connecting to one of the other base stations - but can't work out how to find out if this is so, and if so how to stop it.
The iMac has recently returned from Applecare having had a new screen installed - is it possible that the airport antenna could have been disconnected as part of this? This might explain problem - but again I can't work out how to test this.
Suggestions anyone?

I know that you mean round AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) but I want to clarify something.
There is not a snow AEBS. Referring to it that way is confusing because there IS an 802.11b Dual-Ethenret (aka "snow") AirPort base station (ABS). The snow ABS does not do WDS and does not have a USB port.

There isn't any way to control which base station it connects to BUT you can see which one it is connected to. If the iMac is running OS 10.5, hold down the OPTION key while selecting the network name on the AirPort menu. You will see the MAC address of the base station which the iMac is connected to.

If that's the case, what is the best option for a base station to give me the fastest possible speeds on my 2MB Broadband connection in UK.
I will be linking my base station to an ADSL router using ethernet.

Your iBook G3 requires an original Airport card - which is no longer sold by Apple and its dealers. This card is becoming increasing difficult (and expensive) to buy - try EBay.
You can use ANY wireless router to connect your Airport equipped iBook to an ethernet interface DSL modem. I don't recommend you buy one of the old Graphite or Snow Base Stations (topic of this discussion forum). If you want to buy an Apple product, get the Airport Express. If you don't mind buying a non-Apple product, any wireless router sold at your local computer shop will do just fine.
One additional consideration - since you live in the UK, you need to use a so-called "DSL gateway" if you use an Apple Airport Express or Base Station. Most DSL systems in the UK use the PPPoA protocol to establish a connection - which Apple's products can't handle, thus the need for an external "DSL gateway" that does handle this protocol.

Use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.

If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).

This Airport Extreme base station can't connect to iCloud

I have a Airport Extreme base station (model A1408) running firmware 7.6.4.
In troubleshooting a Back to My Mac issue, I noticed that the configuration page for the base station had a yellow dot next to my apple id in the "Back to My Mac" section of the "Base Station" tab, with words underneath that say, "This Airport Extreme base station can't connect to iCloud".
When I delete the id and re-enter it, the dot goes green and no errors are generated (the id/password tokens are accepted). Then, I push "Update", and after the base station comes back, the light is yellow again. (To be clear, the dot next to the apple id is yellow, not the base station status light, which is always green.)
I'm connected to Xfinity Cable Internet service via a Motorola SB6141.
Everything iCloud related works for my various iOS and MacOS devices except Back to My Mac.
Can anyone point me to a solution? I've already been through Apple's troubleshooting and support docs related to Back to My Mac.

NEVER MIND!
After reverting to the old LinkSys router, I left the AEBS powered up all night. This morning, I tried once again and the AEBS mysteriously started working with my laptop after reconnecting and power-cycling the cable modem. Go figure!
Unfortunately, the iMac in another room doesn't seem to be able to join the new network, but I'll close this thread and perhaps open a new one after doing some more trouble-shooting.

Which Base Station?

HOWDY! Would someone kindly let me know which base station(s) will work, best, with my TiBook? I currently have an original Airport card installed and use a dial-up. For what it's worth, I may change to some form of DSL in the not too distant future but, for now, dial-up it is.

If you use dial-up and want to go wireless, your only solution is one of Apple's base stations [the graphite AirPort base station (ABS), snow ABS, or AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)]. Most of Apple's base stations include a built-in 56k modem, see AirPort base station differences.
If you switch to DSL or Cable modem (something with an Ethernet interface) you can use any 802.11b or 802.11g compliant base station.

I just had Uverse installed. The iMac which was my base station is now connected via my household electric ground connection. Another computer is now the base station. I have connected my Time Capsule to my computer by USB cable, but can't set it up

My iMac desktop has been the base station for my wi fi, but we had to connect it via ground wire of my electrical system and use another desktop as the base station [with windows op system]. We have connected my Time Capsule to the computer via USB cable. I believe that will require setting up the Capsule to use Ethernet, but the instructiions on the install disc only talk about using Airport. How can I find instructions for setting up using USB cable and Ethernet?

The TC cannot connect to the computer by USB.. it is network device.. it only connects by ethernet or wireless.. usb is for external drive or printer.

Airport Extreme 802.11g base station loses internet connection often

I just installed an Airport Extreme base station (802.11g version Apple Base Station V5.7) last week. And it keeps dropping my internet connection at least once a day.
I simply replaced an old SMC Barricade wireless router that died (and was a POS). But I only had to reset the SMC about once every 2 months. Nothing else has changed in my setup. Only the router/base station is different.
The wireless part is fine. Even when the internet connection gets dropped the hard wired AND wireless clients can still access the local network. Reseting the DSL modem has no effect. The only solution is to power cycle (unplug and plug back in) the AEBS OR restart it from Airport Admin utility.
But you can't do that from offsite. When the AEBS drops the internet connection I can't access my office network from home!
Is there a place in Airport Admin Utility which tells you the status of your internet connection like most generic wireless routers with web-based software do?
Any ideas on resolving this?

Based on your description, open AirPort Admin Utility and check the configuration of your main base station on the "Internet" pane. If you're using ethernet cable from the modem to the base station, the top selector [Connect Using:] should show "Ethernet" and the second selector [Configure:] should show "Using DHCP"
Also, check your iMac's System Preferences>Network at "Show: AirPort" and check the PPPoE pane which should show no entries (unless your isp requires its use), and the TCP/IP pane which should show "Configure IPv4:" as being "Using DHCP" - while all other info is filled in automatically.

No, the AirPort Admin Utility is not web-based, only located on your computer with the information available to it necessary to operate the AirPort system. It does not actually administer the signal. I think that is done only by System Preferences>Network.

No, that info is not available in that utility. The information you seek is at System Preferences>Network, but only after the system scans for it. Click the "Assist me..." button and then, on the "Do you need assistance setting up a new network connection or solving a network problem?" panel that opens, click the "Diagnostics..." button. A "Network Diagnostics" panel will then open and if its scan shows there is no internet the lights to the left of "Internet" and "Server" will be yellow instead of green. Meanwhile, it continues scanning for the connection until it is re-established. I determined this by pulling my cable from the phone jack, later reinserting it.

In re-reading, I may not have given you what you need. It sounds as if you may be "timing out" somehow on your connection. You might want to check around at some of your log-on settings to see if there is that possibility connected to one of them, even though the only thing I can think of is the "Renew DHCP Lease" button which is unknown to me, as I've never used it.

Airport Base station or Airport express to use wirelessly for dial up ?

I have an Ibook G4 1.33 with a Airport extreme card.
I currently have it set it up to the wireless modem that my phone company provided for me for my DSL service.
Unfortunately I am moving to an area that does not have DSL service. I would like to know if I can set up my Ibook to use it wirelessly and have it connected to an Airport base station or Airport express in order to have my dial up service to work wirelessly???? The only base station with dial-up capability (in addition to traditional ethernet equipped modem capability) is the AirPort Extreme Base Station w/modem. Check the Apple Store to look over the details, and make sure you are looking at the AEBS with the modem (there is also a version without a dial-up modem which will not work in your application).

Can Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11g Connect To Park's Free WiFi?

The RV resort where I'm staying has free WiFi for Internet connections. It shows up on my iBook's Airport list of possible networks in the menu bar, along with my own local network which is an older Airport Extreme Base Station (white dome 802.11g) which has my HP printer plugged into it via an ethernet cable.
However, when I am connected to the park's WiFi via the laptop's Airport network choices, I am NOT connected to my AEBS, and therefore cannot print to the printer wirelesslessly. Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?

Sorry, but no. You cannot connect your iBook's AirPort to more than one wireless network at a time. Since it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between your RV resort's Wi-Fi and the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), you won't be able to extend it to meet your needs.

AE Base station will not connect to Internet

First of all, let me state that I have been lurking here for about a month, trying to fix this on my own, before writing this post. The problem: My base station sends out a strong signal, and shows a green light, but the network diagnostics on my computer say that it is not connected to the ISP or server.
I have tried (MANY times) the fix offered by Tesserax in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5750473&#5750473
which, in my opinion, should have fixed it. I paid a consultant from the local Apple reseller to come and have a look at it. He checked the modem settings and the base station, and concluded that the base station was defective (it was brand new) and I sent it back and got a replacement model from Apple.
The new base station has exactly the same problem. It won't connect to the ISP or the server. I brought it in to work, plugged it into the ethernet cable here, and it works just fine. It connects to the internet perfectly. (Incidently, I checked it using the same laptop I have at home).
So it seems obvious to me that the problem lies somewhere in the communication between my home modem and the base station. (The home modem does connect to the internet when I plug it directly into the computer).
But I still don't know what I can do other than reset the modem! I have rebooted it at least 25 times, left it unplugged overnight and everything...
Please help!

Either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, try these settings:
AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
o Wireless Security: Not enabled
o Channel: Automatic
o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
Internet tab
o Connect Using: Ethernet
o Configure: Using DHCP
o WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Network tab
o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
My modem is set up to work as a DHCP server. In that case, the AEBS should NOT be configured to use DHCP as well, right?
The AEBS should be configured for DHCP. Since the modem is connected to the AEBS's WAN port, only the AEBS will receive the modem's DHCP-assigned address. In turn, computers connected to the AEBS will get their IP addresses from the AEBS.

I am trying to stop my Xbox from connecting to my Airport extreme base station and only connect to my airport express extender. Anyone have any ideas?

I have an aiport extreme base station in my living room and an airport express in my bedroom extending the network. For some reason my xbox along with some other devices always connects to the extreme base station in the living room which has a very low signal. Is there a way to setup a seperate network for my express extender so that I can connect only certain devices? HELP

You would probably want your Express to join the network if an extender isn't required. Reset to factory settings and join the network.
If you do want your Express as an extender run an Ethernet cable between the Express and the Verizon router and set the Express up to be in bridge mode, with the same WiFi network name and password as your Verizon router.
