Which Cable & Transfer Questions!

Hi All,
I have a 15" Intel 2.2ghz MBP Tiger running 10.4.11 which I think has both Firewire 400 & 800 Ports? I will soon have a new 17" 2.8 UBMP which will be factory installed with Leopard and I would like to know which type of Firewire cable I need (400 or 800) and with how may pins so I can transfer everything over.
I guess I will be using Migration Assistant (my first time!) to move everything over to the new UBMP and read that one could also use a Ethernet Cable to do the transfer? Is that the same as Cat5e? Would there be any issues or problems using this option and which is better, faster and more preferable of the two?
I also have a cloned copy of my existing hard drive (with Tiger) on a Western Digital Passport USB hard drive - can I just connect that up to the new Leopard UBMP to a USB port and transfer everything over?
Many Thanks,
Suave!

Hi,
Thanks for the help! I just checked and both units have Firewire 800 ports so I have ordered a 9 Pin to 9 Pin Firewire 800 lead. I just got a reply from Super-Duper regarding transferring everything over from the cloned external hard-drive with Tiger to the new UMBP with Leopard and this is what they said:
+"Assuming you've made a proper "Backup - all files" with "Smart Update", when you get your new MBP, it'll ask you if you want to "Copy from another Mac" the FIRST time you start it up.+
+Point that either at the original Mac or the SuperDuper! full backup volume and it'll bring in your applications and data, and leave Leopard in place."+
I know lots of folks here use Super-Duper so I am wondering which is the best, easiest and safest way to transfer everything over - the Migration Assistant option or the Super-Duper one?
Thank You,
Suave!

  • SPDIF cable transfer question

I want to transfer files from Audition to a sampling keyboard which samples in 16 bit.
My Adobe files are 32 bit, will this be a problem?
I was thinking use the digital out of my soundcard which is spdif to the digital in of my sampler, since this would preserve the signal better then analog, correct?  Or is their a greater chance of distortion using the digital cable?
Is the 32bit of Audition to 16bit of the sampler going to be an issue?

You aren't absolutely obliged to dither a 16-bit file - but almost certainly the original files in the sampler will be. And if you gave me the alternative of file where the reverb tail (or just the noise floor) cuts off with a sort of 'clonking' noise at -96dB or a dithered one that didn't do this, I'd go for the dithered one every time.
And if you are recording guitar samples, the noise floor will be higher anyway, so I wouldn't have thought this would be an issue. Anyway, I'd do the editing in Audition, dither the results and load them into the sampler like that, because the small potential increase in the noise floor will be nowhere in it compared to the other potential problems you'd have with undithered samples.
The main one of these would be that for each sample, the noise floor would be slightly different anyway - so when you re-recorded them you'd have undithered sounds at loads of different levels, and the resultant grunge would be pretty unpleasant. If noise really is an issue with any of the resultant tracks, I'd be more inclined to use Audition NR on the finished result than play about with the individual files. If it's just one group of files, then do a stem mix of them, and treat that separately, then reintroduce the result back into the mix.

  • Transfer: early 2008 Macbook to new Macbook Pro Retina. Which cable?

Which cable do I use for a transfer between these two? I want to use Migration Assistant.

Or you can use a Firewire cable and FW > Thunderbolt adapter (if your machine has a FW port). I believe FW is a bit faster than the Ethernet, but could be wrong.
FWIW, you would want to use Setup Assistant - available only once during the initial setup of the new Mac - rather than Migration Assistant later, as that will duplicate your user account/folder and depost some duplicates which you'll need to throw out later.

  • Syncing iPad & iPod...  device USB port cable connector question

I have an iPad & iPod 4th gen.... both syncing cables look identical..no identity markings on either. I'm not sure now which came with which device.
QUESTION: Are the syncing/charging ( know I can't charge iPad off USB port) cables given with purchase interchangable for these 2 devices?
    Thanks!

Yes, the cables work the same. It is an Apple proprietary 30 pin connector.
The chargers are different. The iPhone/iPod charger is 5 watt. The iPad charger is 10 watt. But you can use the iPad charger with iPhones/iPods because it is self limiting.

  • Which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

    I totally understand.
Check some things from here, I have 2 and they have been great so far.
Check here, lots of storage and reasonable prices. Also great support, you get to speak to a person
Clean off your on the G5 drive and off you go.
I suggest buying a second drive and setting it up for a back up, Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper (both "bootable" back up) All searchable on the web.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/elite+pro
You can talk to a person for REAL advice, Phone: 800.275.4576  Ask about exporting to your G5 and and exporting to your existing OSX, you may only need a small inexpensive drive for this.
Quick delivery and willing to help.
Hope this makes you back up and running :-)
Do get a back up drive, as it is not ""whether my drive will fail, as much as "when my drive fails"

  • HT5299 which cables do I need to connect my macbook pro 2013 to an hd tv?

which cables do I need to connect my macbook pro 2013 to an hd tv?  The port's on the side have changed from my previous Mac.  Thank you.

If you have a retina MBP use a HDMI to HDMI cable.
If you have a non retina MBP, use a minidisplay port to HDMI cable.  Insert the minidisplay end in the Thunderbolt port.
    Ciao.

  • Which cable to use with macbook air

I need to do an extensive download.  Right now I'm on our wirless network here at the house.  I need to use a hardwire connection to our modem to decrease download time.  Which cable do I need to connect to the modem?  BTW we are on Comcast.

You need an ethernet cable, however, the MacBook Air does not have an ethernet port so you will need a USB to ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.

  • Which cable to charge my iPhone 3g in an airplane?

    Hello,
I need to take the plane for a long trip (10 hours flight). Not sure how long the battery will last (in airplane mode).
Is there a cable I can use to recharge my iPhone 3G in a plane (like the one I have for my car)?
Which cable do you recommend me?
    Regards,
    Yves.

Any airline power adapter with a USB port will work, along with your dock cable. There are also adapters that work using power from the seat headphone port, so they don't require you to be in a seat with power (usually first/business class and select seats in coach).

  • Which cable to connect macbook pro to tv

WHich cable would I need to connect my macbbok pro to my 5 yr old panasonic viera tv - not HD but has HD ports. Hopefully to get audio without extra speakers.

I suggest a HDMI to HDMI cable since your MBP has a HDMI port.  This would be the simplest option.
Here is an example (not an endorsement):

  • Which cable should I use for a MacBook to external VGA monitor

    Hello everyone
Having just come back to Apple, last having used a Apple 2E way back in the 70's, I've got to get used to non-IBM compatible stuff!
Please advise which cable is needed to hook up to a standard IBM compatible VGA screen/cable.
Also, will the same cable do for an overhead projector with a VGA input port.
    Thank you

Hi and welcome to Discussions and welcome back to the Apple world,
this are the tech specs of your MacBook http://support.apple.com/kb/SP579 so you need a MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter like this one http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NDg for connecting your IBm display and your projector.

  • Can someone please tell me which cable is used to connect a Macbook Pro to a TV.

I want to connect my laptop to the tv but i don't know which cable is used and where to buy it..

On my 2011 Macbook Pro (and my sister's) mdp does pass audio.
I seem to recall that some (older?) mdp-hdmi adaptors wouldn't pass audio.
The moshi one I have here passes audio, and another one I have does too -- I think it's made by RocketFish.
I see that the one at Apple Store is moshi -- it lists the digital audio feature:

  • Which cable do i need for dell monitor  Dell Ultrasharp U2713H - macbook 13' retina?

Which cable do i need to attach monitor to macbook pro for optimum display resolution?
    thank you

The resolution is supported, whether at 60 Hz, I do not know.
    Here are the Monitor Specs:
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/monitors/en/dell_ultrasharp_u2713h _specs.pdf
In order to obtain the resolution that you require, it seems that you will need a minidisplayport - minidosplayport cable such as this:

  • Equium M50: Which cable can I use to connect to TV?

I want to hook my computer up to my TV. I went into my local computer shop but they showed me about 5 different cables and I had no idea which one would work best or work at all. Can anybody advise me on which cable would work for my computer the Equium M50-192? Or can I even buy such a cable online?
    Thanks in advance.

The cable you need is S-Video however not all TV/Video equipment provide full S-Video support resulting in a black and white image. This minor issue can be resolved using a S-Video to Composite adapter such as one sold by Maplin at the sacrifice of quality
