Which Camcorder should I consider?

I have 14 grandchildren and am not too adept at this new technology, so I'm looking for something that would be good but easy.  Any thoughts?

Carla, the question I like to ask is what do you want to do with the footage after you record it?  e.g. store away tapes for the future? put them on a computer to share with far-away friends/family? connect the camcorder to a TV to share with friends?
Another big determinant is simply your budget.

  • Which version should I consider: Dreamweaver CS5 MAC or PC?

I'm ready to make the leap from FrontPage 2003 to Dreamweaver.  I have an iMAC with LION OS and run Parallels.  I'm currently using FP2003 and have for many years and an very comfortable with it. But I understand it's time to make a leap of faith and try something new. My dilemma lies with this:  Which version of CS5 should I get?  Should I run the MAC or PC version?  I only use MAC products but I want to be able to convert my FP web sites easily.  Would one OS work better than the other?
I also noticed in discussions that the Photo Gallery attribute is not in this current version. That is disappointing.  Does CS5 have other alternatives for photo viewing?
And lastly, what resources would you suggest for assisting with the "learning curve" from FP to Dreamweaver?
    Thanks for any info!

  • Which camcorder should I buy???

    Greetings Advisors,
I have recently purchased a new imac and would like to dive into the world of beginner video production and editing. I plan on starting out with iMovie08 and eventually graduating to FCE.
My question is: what is the best camcorder for beginners? Visual quality and user friendly-ness are most important. I've had my eye on the Canon HV20, but after looking through the forums, have noticed that there are several other options and dont want to regret my purchase in the end. Is the HV20 a good idea? Will I have to make additional purchases in order to have decent editing ability?
    Thank you much!

If you intend to edit (EASILY) using iMovie or FCE/FCP it is important to get a Mini-DV (TAPE BASED) camera with a FireWire output. These cameras use a digital format called, quite naturally, "DV".
During the last 5 years, cameras using DVDs, Hard Drives and Flash Memory have become popular and now account for probably 90% of camcorder sales.
However, they are NOT SUITABLE if you intend to edit. They use a different video format (MPEG 2 or 4) from the ones used by iMovie and FCE (DV) and are designed mainly for snapshotters who just want to take video with the minimum of effort and show the lot, warts and all, to their unfortunate audiences.
It is possible to edit video taken by such cameras BUT you first have to spend time and money converting it to the DV format that can be used by good editing programs.

  • Which camcorder should I buy? Please help

I am an older and casual user and I have been looking to an affordable camcorder compatible with iMovie but they all have problems. They all seem to be almost there but according to the consumers who bought them and the reviewers who test them no one of them is really "there". I need to take movies of concerts, two to three hours, I need a good sound, possibly 5.1, and a decent battery life.
I also need to take snapshots while I record.
A technician I know tells me that Sony camcorders are over all the best made and he just bought one for himself. Consumer Report recommend Sony HDR 150 for quality/price ratio. I'd like the Sony HDR 550 as well: it takes great snapshots, I heard! Am I going to be out of my mind if I buy one of them?
I cannot afford Final Cut but I don't mind to upgrade to iMovie11 or a new version of OS X
    Thanks

As you didn't detail your needs, I can only recommend the Canon HV30. It has consumer form factor and shots in HDV, but has a mike input, shoe, great image quality, HDMI output to bypass HDV compression in live capture, and an affordable media storage - miniDV tapes. I believe you can find one in less than $600.

  • What type of camcorder should I buy?  Which works best with iMovie?

Ok...so from my previous post I have come to the conclusion with some help from my new discussion board friends , that I should ditch my Sony mini DVD, and reinvest in a mini DV camera for ease of use with QT Pro and iMovie....that being said...tell me what YOU ALL use? How easy is it to connect to Mac? Firewire? Editing? iMovie making? Trial and errors? Pro/Cons? Sony? Other brands?

    Hi Karsten et al.
I have a problem that I am desperate for any kind of feedback from. Can you help?
Last week I bought a Sony DCR-SR90 HDD camcorder, thinking it would be simple to pull files from this hard drive camcorder straight into iMovie.
However, there is only a USB connection, and the bundled software is for PCs only. I had to download an MPEG2 program from Apple (£14.99) just to be able to import the files and now it does so, but without sound. Moreover, the quality of the image is awful in the iMovie viewing window.
I have a feeling that this Sony camcorder, though quite new, is not compatible with an Apple Powerbook and/or iMovie. This is disastrous as it cost £850 and I need it for my own wedding in September.
My question is: is it worth taking this machine back to Jessops and getting a Mini-DV camcorder that is definitely compatible with Apple/iMovie, or is there a way to get this funky Sony camcorder to sync/work with a Mac?
Second: if I exchange it for a different camcorder, which one should I get guys???!!! (it's vital that it works with iMovie as I like to make decent edited home movies with music, effects etc).
    Can you help???

I work as a freelance graphic designer and I need (at least) Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse and Dreamweaver so single apps are not the way to go. As I'm only one person it doesn't make much sence going for the team solution either.
Is there a plan specifically for freelancers/oneman companies?

  • Which Camcorder with HD?

I want to buy a camcorder '' Any reccomendations for which camcorder with built in HD..I should consider. Obviously must have firewire d/load. L

    Hi,
We have the Sony HDR HC3 and are really enjoying it. I'm also pleased to say that it works wonderfully with iMovieHD.
Here's a review. There's a bunch on the net. Not sure what this one says though... just a high hit on Google.
I believe its no longer available on Sony's site as they have replaced it with some newer models - but we are happy.
    YMMV.

  • New-B!  Which camcorder to buy?

Hello all. Totally new to this forum and to video editing. I have a clean slate and am trying to figure out which camcorder to buy this weekend and was hoping for some help. What I'm looking for is good quality video (doesn't have to be great, but solid) that I can easily import to iMovie 08 and then edit with either of my computers and export the finished product to the Web, or burn to DVD using iDVD. I've been doing a lot of reading and it seems that I could have trouble with some cameras using my G5 as it is not Intel powered, so I would like to stay away from those. I'm not needing to do anything professional with this, just something that is good quality, easy to use, compatible with iMovie 08 and iDVD, and is under $1000. I would consider buying an HD Camcorder while understanding that I have to film/export in a non-HD format until I get FC down the road. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks so much

I did have a problem with Canon repair service during the first year when I bought one of their camcorders several years ago. The on-start-off switch started being intermittent after only 4-5 months and got worse from there. Canon wouldn't do the repair, as their guarantee said, and wanted to charge me a high price to do it. I operated using the remote for a long while. The camera finally wouldn't turn on at all and became totally useless.
Needless to say, I haven't purchased another Canon product since that time. Since then, I went to other makes and have spent quite a bit on both still digital cameras and, very recently now, a camcorder by Sony (HDR-HC9). I stay with the miniDV tapes for both quality and convenience purposes, and also found that I had to revert to iMovie HD (vs 6, rather than iMovie 8) in order to properly edit my videos. So far, I really like my results with the HDR-HC9 - and iMovie 6.
Incidentally, I now only purchase fine camera equipment from very well established local dealers who specialize in camera equipment rather than the big box electronic supply house where I purchased the Canon. The largest camera dealer in Atlanta told me that Canon should certainly have done the repair for me and that Canon would have - if I had purchased it from that dealer. They said that they have such a large volume that they easily pressure such camera makers to uphold their guarantees since Canon wants them to continue selling their product.
I went from a very strong preference for Canon to the opposite. The big box electronic supply house simply said it was between me and Canon and that they wouldn't help at all. So, "good price" is not at all necessarily "good deal". Besides, the good sellers will now generally try to meet the best internet prices.
    Good luck.
So time has passed, but these are lessons that, at least, this one person has learned by experience. Hopefully, Canon may have corrected their problems in their service department by this time. But, I don't feel inclined to test them again myself.

Consider the following html code where I open a textarea and include a comment tag within the textarea. Within the comment tag (which Firefox 4 should ignore) I've included a close textarea tag. Firefox 4 (unlike FF3 and IE) closes the textarea.

  • Which solution should I adopt? Applet or Java Web Start?

    Hi,
I am developing a web application which should print cards through a printer in the client side.
I would like to use a web start aplication to execute JNI calls in client side, but I am considering a possible solution the use of an Applet aplication to execute that.
My question is "Which solution should I adopt?"
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I would go for Java Web Start, since it is:
    a wonderful tool
    easy to use
    gives you full control
you don't have to start your browser to print them cards
But wait for better qualified responses as I haven't written an applaet since school.

  • Which camcorder works best with iDVD/iMovie?

So I'm buying a new camcorder. Which camcorder is the easiest to use with iDVD and iMovie? For now I just want to view and produce a DVD.
I had a JVC Everio and returned it. Converting MPEG-2 to DV I guess can be done but seems like a lot of work. My first attempt with Streamclip asked me to buy the MPEG-2 module.
I'm now looking at a Sony HDR-SR1. Thought the AVCHD would be MPEG-4 compatible and work with iMovie/iDVD but not sure. It will record in both AVCHD and MPEG-2 though.
Any suggestions or ideas? I could really use the help.

    Welcome Michael Snell
I use sony camcorders (minidv plus i.Link) successfully with iLife '06 and FCP HD. The ones to avoid are those that record to DVD directly or to an internal hard drive. Make sure your camera has digital pass thru which will also allow you to connect most analog sources as well should you need to like a VCR or another camera for import into iMovie via firewire.
Canon also works well but represents my second choice of minidv cameras.
JVC is in the same situation and would represent a third choice IMO.
The good news is that almost any minidv camcorder will work on a mac that uses fw provided it records to mini dv tape and has a firewire or i.Link connector/s.

  • Is there a possibility should not consider available quantity at time of MR

    Sir,
Is there a possibility should not consider available quantity at time of MRP planning?
    Example:
    Available stock: 100
    Planning stock: 100 (MD61)
Schedule line to be generate: 100 Qty (Exclude the available quantity at time of MRP planning)
    regards,
    sampath

    Dear Sampath/Raj,
    1) Move the stock to particular storage location for which you don't want to be consider by MRP
    2) Now go to OMIR t-code, input value as 1 for that particular storage location
    3) Go to MMSC, input value as 1 for that particular storage location
    4) Go to MRP - 4 view Down you can find field Storage location input value as 1
    5) Now run MRP, system will not consider stock of that particular storage location

  • Which NAS should I buy?

I am looking to buy a NAS for home use. Here are my requirement(s): use as file storage and sharing inside home LAN. I will need to screen movie to TV from it. I would need it to be reliable.
I backup my MAC locally via USB by timemachine. It seems like Sinology ds212j and Qnap ts212 are pretty good deals. But there are also people saying Drobo and Netgear models. So which one should I go with? I am not a video/photo professional (maybe some hobby works). So I am not going to spend over $300 for the NAS Which one do you guys use?
BTW, I have a 500GB harddrive now. Once I bought the NAS, can I put a 2TB drive in one bay and the 500GB drive in the other bay? I guess I will still be able to use the setup but not the RAID, right? Will performance be affected?
    Thanks,
    /S

So far I've not found a single USB DVD player that didn't work with the Mac. BluRay is a bit trickier since you'll also need 3rd party software to play commercial BluRay movies because the  Mac OS doesn't support BluRay.
A NAS is useful under three circumstances: 1) you want to access data from the drive when you aren't at home. 2) you have more than one computer in the household and want to share that drive with them and/or 3) you want to take advantage of RAID technology. And even here a NAS isn't the only way to accomplish this.
If none of these hold true for you then save your money and get a high quality external drive - I recommend OWC to one and all. (I have no affiliation, I'm a very satisfied customer.) You might even want to consider OWC's miniStack Max which contains both a hard drive and optical drive.

  • What Mac Pro specs should I consider for photography?

After years of putting up with various pc configurations, I've decided to take the plunge and go over to a Mac Pro system.
I have up to £4000 to invest on a system to use primarily for my work as a photographer. But which areas should I concentrate on when configuring my set-up? Given that Photoshop seems happy to suck up as much memory and processing power as one can throw at it, a sizeable amount of RAM and a decent speed of processor appears obvious. But how much RAM and what size processor, bearing in mind that my image file sizes are usually around the 300Mb mark and often go as high as 700Mb when containing unflattened layers? These file sizes have rendered my supposed powerful Dell to performing at a snails pace. Also, what else should I consider in my configuration?
My image library is stored on a separate drive, so I could probably live with a reduced hard drive capacity if necessary.
Incidentally, I am far from being a computer boffin, so I'd appreciate advice which isn't overly technical.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm in the UK and I use my Mac Pro for Video and Photography and I've had a few Mac Pro's getting to my ideal solution. If you are only using it for Photography I think you would be fine with 8Gb of RAM but if you fill out all 8 slots with 2Gb modules from Crucial it's not too bad to go to 16Gb. My advice would be to run the Mac Pro on a large Western Digital Caviar Black (their quickest) such as the 2Tb model. Then, I'd invest in a Tempo SATA card so you can purchase either a Drobo or a Hive for your Vault for Aperture so you have total peace of mind with your data. Display wise, just buy an Apple 30" Cinema before they replace it with a glossy version. They are absolutely superb for Video and Photography but beware, if they go wrong and they are in the bin, so buy AppleCare immediately. I've listed my setup below with where to buy and costs in UK pounds. Good luck and enjoy.
Mac Pro 8-core with the 8Gb upgrade from Apple as that will give you 4x2Gb allowing you to not have to bin the 6x1Gb's you would get as standard. Then also add the ATI Radeon HD 4870. Should come to £2798.00 inc. VAT.
Western Digital 2Tb Caviar Black (eBuyer, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173388) for £173.86
Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P Serial ATA Host Adaper (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Sonnet/Product/59673?_Sonnet-Tempo-SATA-E4P-Serial-ATA-Host-Adapter-for-PCI-Express-(TSATAII-E4P)-TSATAII-E4P&ref=5681a404afd60a8d) for £232.00
    Apple Aperture 3 (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/mb957za/apple-aperture-3-web-updatable-t o-3.0.3) for £119.00
    Hive 4Tb Raid (Give's 2.8Tb of SAFE storage) (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Hive/Product/66109?_Hive-4TB-RAID-(4x1TB-drives)-5002) for £716.00
Apple 30" Cinema Display (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/m9179ba/apple-30-cinema-display) for £1115.08
All the prices are inclusive of the dreaded VAT so if you are VAT registered you can save. I would say that with Aperture 3 you need full Photoshop less than ever, I'd consider Elements to start with to save some cash. You could also look at a Drobo instead of the Hive but we bought both in our office and the Drobo is painfully slow in comparison to the Hive and the Hive uses a dedicated Hardware RAID where the Drobos use a software version and I've heard some horror stories from Drobo owners.
