Which camera to directly import movies to iPad

hello
i would like to buy a small camera (under 200 $) whose movies i could directly import onto the iPad to cut them in iMovie.
But if i understand well, there are problems with the file format.
With my own Canon G10 for instance, it works like a charm, but with the Nikon P7000 of a friend of mine, the iPad is not able to playback the imported movies.
But strangely, both record in h.264, but it only works with the G10.
I would be glad if someone would point me to a specific under 200$ model where it would work for sure.
many thanks
Francis

Canon 5D Mark II, but I don't know about the file format, the files are .MOV files. Thanks!

The movies have to be in a compatible format - those that are supported by the iPad are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • Hard drive died on iMac and getting replacement.  I have all photos backed up on my iPad 3, which was synced directly to the dead iMac's iTunes.  How can I move them back to my laptop and eventually to the repaired iMac?

I'd like to restore photos from my iPad3 to the iMac once I have a new drive. I had uploaded them directly from the iMac onto the IPad via iTunes.   That iTunes was wiped out in the drive failure.  In the meantime I wanted to move the photos to my MacBook Pro, but iTunes tells me they belong to another iTunes (mine also but was on the iMac) and syncing will erase the content on the iPad.  Moved all photos (4000+) to an album in iPhoto on the iPad, but iPhoto on the MacBook doesn't see the album-  It only see photos directly taken on the iPad. I seem to be caught in an owenership issue between my photos, my computers, and permissions due to the dirve failure.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Photos synced to an iDevice are different from ones taken by the device's camera.
Difference between camera roll, photo stream, and photo library - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3846502
You will need to use a third party utility to try to recover them as it is assumed that if you transferred them from your computer  you alredy have the original files on the computer and a backup of the computer itself (do not rely upon your iPad as a backup).  Furthermore, the photos transferred to your iPad have reduced quality so they are not as good as the originals.
Here's my old list of utilities (this list was really done for music rescue so make sure they do photos too):
Note: The information below hasn't been updated since early 2013.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do i import movies from my iPad (movie cam) into final cut

I have imoported movies from the ipad into Iphoto. I couldn't get any videos to show up in the import browser from Ipad into Aperture. trying to import files directly from iphoto to final cut brings up an error message. exporting the videos from iphoto into another folder got them into final cut but the video doesnt play, the timeline just moves along a still image of the first frame of the video.

It's a bit confusing whether you are using iphoto or aperture as you mention both.
Are the movies still on your iPad? The best way to import would be to do it directly using FCPX. Attach the iPad, fire up FCPX, and import from camera (command-I). You should then see your clips that exist on the iPad and should be able to import them to an Event.

  • IMPORT CAMERA MOVIES INTO IPAD

Hello... I am trying to import movie(s) filmed on my Sony Cyber-shot HX9V into my iPad 3 using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit using my camera’s USB cable. (Importing using the memory card connector only imports photos from what I have experienced).  Once connected from camera to ipad I receive a message: "Accessory Unavailable: The attached accessory uses too much power".  I have plugged and unplugged numerous times to NO success.  Question: does anyone have know how to resolve this problem?  Must I use some "app" such as iMovie for the iPad...or?? an import via the app?
I am able to successfully export movies into my iMac via card reader and open up in iMovie on my iMac.

Just checked the Camera specs and it seems you have a bunch of options when it comes to movie recording.
Can you post what format the videos are you recorded?
This is from the Apple iPad3 tech specs:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Keep an eye of the appendix .m4v,.mov, .mp4 and compare it with your camera. Are your recordings also stored in the DCIM folder (i guess yes)?

  • Cameras which support direct import to imovie (ipad2) through camera connection kit

    Hi
I am looking to create a list of consumer (and prosumer) cameras which can directly connect to ipad2 via CCK and the video (& accompanying audio) shot by these cameras directly import in imovie without any conversion etc. for subsequent editing.
So far I have see some posts mentioning Flip Mino HD being able to do this.
Would also appreciate if the camera's resolution, rough price and other details are also posted for comparision sake.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Trouble importing movie directly to external hard drive

I have an externall hard drive that I purchased for the purpose of starting an iMovie project on it and then importing movies directly from my camera onto it (via my iMac). I have read on the discussion boards that other people are able to do this. When I try to do it, the movie stutters and has gaps.
I traded out fire wires in case it was that. I also erased the external hard drive and that didn't help either.
The hard drive is an OWC with 400 fire wire on it. Any ideas of what would cause this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

I have a canon zr 50, which worked fine before the upgrade to tiger and imovie HD, since the upgrade this camera no longrer works or is supported? http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html the zr 40, and 45 are supported which are the same camera but the top of the line zr 50 which only adds an accesory shoe is not. This camera is not old by any standards and barely has a scratch on it and Apple wants me to buy a new camera just so it is supported? What gives?

  • Can you import movie videos from SD camera card

Can you import movie videos (MP4) into an Ipad from an SD camera card on a Lightning cable ... or can you only do this from a laptop via Itunes? In other words, is Itunes the only way to get non-Itune videos to the Ipad? Hope I havent made this sound confusing.

To import the videos must follow a very strict naming convention.
All file names must have 8 characters for a name and be located in a folder named DCIM
    for example
    DCIM
    MOV_5789.mp4
You can't watch the videos off the cart, they must be imported into the iPad. They'll go into the camera roll, when you tap on them it'll open the video app and you can watch from there.

  • Can iphoto be confgured not to import movies from the camera?

Hello, Does anyone knows if iphoto 8 can be configure not to try to import the movies stored on the camera? It cause the import process to be very difficult trying to select only the photos to be imported and leave the movies to be imported by imovie. I will like iphoto only to import photos and imovie to import movies.

No there is no way to specifically tell iPhoto not to import movies.
However, if you sue a camera that mounts on the desktop (or, in the case of a Canon camera, use a USB Card Reader) you can direct iPhoto to import from the Photos folder on the Card using the File -> Import Command

  • Importing movies to purple iMovie from iPhone, iPad, and iPhoto

I have created movies on my iphone and on a Lumix camera. I am trying to figure out the best way to have all my movies in iMovie rather than iPhoto.
I have already likely made the mistake of transfering my Lumix data to an iPad with iOS while I was in Asia. In retrospect, I suppose the best way to get those pictures from my iPad to iMovie would have been to not export the movie from my iPad to my Camera Roll and into iPhoto but rather from my iPad to iMovie.
I also suspect that my iPhone pictures seen on Photo Stream on my iPad would have been best exported to iMovie and from my my iOS iMovie App to send to my Mac iMovie application.
    Are these two ideas correct?
However, some of my movies are already imported into my desktop iPhoto. So, I tried dragging and dropping to my Mac's desktop. I then imported my movies (that came from my iPhone) into my Purple version of iMovie. That was fine except when I trashed my desktop movie to the Trash, it became greyed out in iMovie. So, next question is what I am doing wrong at this point?
Next, my movies from my Lumix imported into my iPad were also then transferred to my Mac OS iPhoto. I dragged those pictures to my desktop but the format is not xx.mp4 but rather is xx.MOV. Is there a better way of dealing with my iPhoto xx.MOV's to get them into Purple iMovie?
Finally, should I just leave all my movies in iPhoto and when in iMovie desktop just view them from the Aperture or iPhoto sidebar?  Can they or should they be imported from the sidebar into iMovie?  If so, can they safely be deleted from iPhoto or will my iMovie clips return to being greyed-out?
I would ideally like all my movies in iMovie and not have duplicate movies in iMovie and iPhoto. What is the best way moving forward to do this properly and to be optimizing my time and organization?
    Thank you

Regarding iPhoto "also importing into my local iPhoto library" -- that is up to you and is controlled by a setting in the menu  iPhoto > Preferences > iCloud > Automatic Import.
I have used both Photo Stream and the USB import method and find it easier to not use Photo Stream and just periodically do the USB import and immediately delete from the Camera Roll.
Another option you may want to look at, if you just want to delete a number of pictures already imported in the past is Image Capture. It allows you to select photos on the phone (previously imported or not) and delete them without importing if desired.

  • How do I import movies from camera?

    Hi.
I have a Lumix FZ38 camera. Although iPhoto 6 does not recognise the make or model, it does at least let me import still photos.
But how do I import movies? They are in "Motion JPEG" format, but neither iPhoto, Quicktime or iMovie recognises them. I can navigate in Finder to a camera directory called PRIVATE where I can see the movies in a sub-folder, as .MTS files. How do I get them into iPhoto, or failing that, onto my Mac?
If I had chosen to record using AVCHD Lite they would be in H.264 and therefore not a problem, but the 'Quick Record' button which I use records in this other format.
(I'm not about to upgrade my hardware or software BTW, so please don't suggest that.)

You need to use iMovie for these movies, but there's a particular protocol needed for getting MTS >format material from your camera to the app. I have no idea if iMovie 6 supports it or not. Post on >the iMovie forum for more.
    I will try - thanks.
iPhoto doesn't support AVCHD Lite which is a proprietary version of the AVCHD format peculiar to >Panasonic. I know that recent versions of iMovie do support this material. I have no idea if iMovie 6 >will, again post on the iMovie forum for more.
I thought H.264 was widely supported by Apple (e.g. on iPods etc)? The MacWorld reviews suggested this wouldn't a problem.
(I'm not about to upgrade my hardware or software BTW, so please don't suggest that.)
Well you may need to be realistic about the chances of software from 2006 supporting formats that >didn't even exist then.
I'm not being stubborn for the sake of it. My computer is a good balance of 2006 hardware and software. I'm not even sure that iLife '09 is compatible with a G5? And even if it was I'd barely use it (iTunes yes, but that's not iLife; Photoshop yes, ditto) so shelling out for it, just for a version of iPhoto isn't an option really. I just want a way to replay my movies outside my camera, is all. H.264 was one of the reasons I bought that camera (I've read about that format for literally years in Mac magazines.)

  • Does Final Cut 7 support direct importing of MTS files from an HD Camera

I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and have been importing MTS files from my Camera's Hard Drive to my Mac through the Log and Transfer feature. However, during the upload it converts the files to .MOV. The resulting .MOV files are much larger than the original MTS files. I am interested in learning if the latest Final Cut Studio with Final Cut Pro 7 allows for a direct import of MTS files as well as editing this native format without the need to convert to a .MOV?
Also, I have many MTS files that are now MT2S originally imported onto my old PC that are now stored on Data Discs. Is there any way possible to bring those MT2S files onto my Mac and edit in their native format or will I need to convert them through some third party software to have them editable on by Final Cut Pro?
    Any insight is appreciated!

You can, if you want to jump through some hoops, edit your native AVCHD footage in Final Cut (there is no direct import option but you can capture it into Toast, export that as an .mp4 and bring that into Final Cut Pro.) That being said, it is a very bad idea plus its clunky and slow.
Long story short: Use Log and Transfer and get a big hard drive.

  • Why I cannot import movies from my camera to iMovie?

I have an iMac with Mac OS X 10.7.5 and I'm trying to download some movies from my Canon PowerShot SX210IS. To download movies I am using iMovie 09 Version 8.06.
When I click on the "Open Camera Import Window" it only shows one alternative as shown below.
It shows "Built-in iSight" and there is no other alternative to select my camera ...
How can I make iMovie to show my camera in the down arrow so I can select it and download my movies?
Your advise and recommendation will be appreciated very much.
    Antares

    Hello AppleMan1958:
Thanks a lot for your answer, but this is exactly what I am doing and what it does is showing my own picture from the camcorder in my computer. I don't have any alternatives to directly import my movies from my camera.
I have received answer from Klondike Kid and gave me the possible cause of my problems. iMovie does not recognize digital still cameras as "movie" cameras. I will have to use an external USB card reader in order to import directly from iMovie.
Again, thanks a lot for your answer.

how do you import movies from an i-kam xtreme eyewear video camera hunting glasses into imovie?

    Here you go Karsten:
    http://www.hunterspec.com/content/i-kam-xtreme®-video-eyewear-0
Looks like it records in AVI format at 25 fps. I think that should import to iMovie OK - if not it should import to iPhoto and then be available in the iMovie Events Library under "iPhoto Videos". Importing shouldn't be a problem based on this extract from the web page:
"The glasses can be hooked directly to a PC with the supplied USB cable to view the video, or when using the Micro SD card, it can be inserted into a card reader to watch footage."
