Which computer and why?

Looking to buy a new computer that will mainly be used for PS CS4 (perhaps CS5), Lightroom and some videoediting. No games that demand heavy graphics acceleration or stuff like that but I want CS4/CS5 to run smooth and without problems.
I´ve been looking at this computer with the following parts:
Intel® Pentium® Processor G6950 2.8GHz
6GB DDR3 (1066MHz)
ATI Radeon HD5670 1GB
Is it more than enough to accomplish what´s necessary in CS4/CS5 or should I choose something better?

The multi-core processor, or even better, multiple multi-core processors is something you'll want.  The G6950 isn't bad but it's a little on the underpowered side.
That video card will be great for Photoshop work.  I'd probably suggest bumping the main RAM memory up to at least double that, though.

  • Which method of BDC is used in which condition and Why?

    Hi,
I want to know In which conditions(or in which type of data) Call Transaction or Batch Input Session is used for Data Migration and why?
    Please help me out.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Gagan Mittal

In both, you will be doing the same screen scraping. But the main difference is while Batch Input method keeps your sessions persistantly if an error occurs, whereas CALL TRANSACTION does not provide that mechanism automatically, you will have to code for it. In call transaction you calling a transaction in a loop depending on your input. But in a batch input session, you will combine your transactions into batches that can be processed at a later time or immediately. This way, when you are doing large volume loads, and you don't want to burden your system with all the transactions running, you can create batches that you can process later when the system is not over-burdened.
But the advantage with CALL TRANSACTION is that you will know the success or failure and the reason for failure in your program itself and you can take a subsequent action based on that result. Since your Batch Input Session is creating a new task, there is no immediate feedback that you can use.
Even with a call transaction, it is advisable to keep the BDC data in a session, if the CALL fails. That way you can revisit the transaction and make corrections.

  • Bit Depth: 8 Bit., 16 Bit or 32 Bit. Which one and why?

Which bit depth should I choose and what are the pros and cons of each? I am currently using 8 Bit.
    Thank You,
    Sebastian

A higher bit depth will give more values of a colour or greyscale that you can work with. So, for example a graduated background may show banding in 8 bit but not 16 or higher.
It all depends what your content originated from, what you are doing and where it will end up, there is no point doing black & white text in 32bit!

  • Lightroom 5 boxset vs download...Which one and why?

Anyone in the know, please define for those of us who wish to purchase LR, what are the differences of the following:
    Box Set
    > Advantages:
    > Disadvantages:
    > Cost:
    Download
    > Advantages:
    > Disadvantages:
    > Cost:
    Thank you

I'd like to add this :
Currently, there is the Creative Cloud plan called the "photography plan" that includes Lightroom (and all future updates - - INCLUDING major dot updates - like Lightroom 6 when it comes out).....AND the full version of Photoshop CC - - all for $10 a month.  Now, there has been no official announcement, but Lightroom 6 could be around the corner (or it could be 6 months away or longer).  If Lightroom comes out in the next few months, it would be in your interest to get this plan - if you'd like to be on the latest version for a while.  Even if you get the perpetual license and download, you will not have access to LR6 if it should come out soon - which means you would have to spend the $149 to get LR5, update it, and then another $149 (assuming its the same) for Lightroom 6 when it comes out.  That alone makes it more logical to get the $10/mo plan - and unless there is not another version of LR (Like Lightroom 7) for 30 months, its cheaper to get on this plan.  And this is ignoring the fact that you get full access to full blown Photoshop and all future updates.  Something to think about.

  • Canon 7D or 70D, which one and why?

I am looking into purchasing a new camera body, the 7D or the 70D obviously and I cannot decide which one to get. U have read/watched countless reviews and comparisons but they dont really help me that much. I mostly photograph landscapes, travel photos, and my dog (who is still a puppy and moves around very fast). I currently own a T2i.
From what I've read, the 70D is a lot better at videos but I almost never shoot videos so the video quality is not very important to me.
    Body - T2i
    Glass - Ef-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, 50mm f/1.8 II, 18-55mm kit lens, 55-250mm f/4-5.6 STM

Thank you, for low-light indoor photographs which camera performs better?
The cameras have similar performance in low-light.  The 70D has a newer sensor and has an edge over the 7D, but it's not an enormous difference.  In side-by-side comparisons you'd probably see the 7D is slightly nosier ... if you look at the images long enough.
Lens selection makes a big difference here.  If you're shooting in low light, use a lower focal ratio lens.
Suppose you're taking a photo using the kit zoom lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) and using 50mm.  The lowest possible focal ratio for that lens, when using the 50mm focal length, is going to be f/5.6.  -OR- you could use your 50mm f/1.8 which is able to do f/1.8.
Dropping from f/5.6 -> f/4 is one stop.
    f/4 -> f/2.8 is another stop
    f/2.8 -> f/2 is another stops (so that's 3 full stops)
    f/2 -> f/1.8 is 1/3rd stop.
That's a total of 3 1/3rd stops.  Each "stop" doubles the amount of light the lens can collect when the shutter is open... combine those stops and the f/1.8 lens is collecting nearly 10x more light as compared to the f/5.6 lens.  The problem with f/1.8 is that it also has a very shallow depth of field so depending on how much you need to keep in focus beyond just your focused distance it may not be suitable... perhaps you back off to f/2.8... or perhaps you back off to f/4 for more depth of field ... but f/4 is still twice as much light as f/5.6.

  • Dot11radio0 and Dot11radio1 - which one and why?

As some may know by know (lol) i am setting up my 1841 for home access. I obtained a 802.11 abg module and started studying and experimenting.
What i have not yet clarified is if Dot11radio 0 and 1 -  2.4 and 5 ghz both support 54mbp transfer rates, and if the 2.4 is the most compatible and common at the time, why would someone also setup the 5ghz one? Are there any clear advantages?
I have currently both running. My small mobile devices connet to the 2.4 one and My laptop to the 5ghz but if both been activated has any downsides
i could probably move to a different setup.
    Open to recommendations - suggestions!

    Hello,
The 2.4 GHz spectrum has only 3 available non-overlapping channels (1, 6, 11), so if you are in an area with other wireless networks in range you could see some interference. There is also potential interference from Microwaves, Bluetooth, etc.
The 5.0 GHz spectrum has many more channels available, and the chances of interference issues are much much lower.
The range is typically better on 2.4 GHz and it is more compatible with devices, but 5.0 GHz will usually have better performance. Also, with both radios turned on, you can split your clients onto both radios, so they aren't contending with eachother as much, since wireless is after all a shared medium.
No real downside to having both Radios turned on that I can think of, aside from a minimal power draw increase (not sure on the specifics)...

  • Stereo or Mono? Which? And why?

Once again I'm starting a new thread to explain some general audio principles that newbies have trouble with.
There's an issue here that's a bit difficult to explain--the difference between "stereo" and "mono".
You have two ears, so you hear "stereo". Your ears send a left signal and right signal to your brain. Your brain processes the difference between the two signals and gives you a sense of direction. You can figure out where the sound you are hearing is coming from.
Originally, recording technology only permitted mono recording. One microphone, and one speaker to play it back. When you listen to recordings made before about 1962, you are listening to a mono recording. If you have a modern stereo and you are playing back a recording from before 1962, you are getting signals out of your left and right speaker, but the signals are identical. You are just getting mono out of two speakers.
Originally "stereo" meant placing two microphones on something--one to represent what the left ear would hear, and one to represent what the right ear would hear.
However, when you take one microphone and plug it into a recording device, you can only record a mono track. Your recording device might permit you to record what you think is stereo, but in reality you are only recording two identical mono tracks.
A guitar also has a plug that comes out of it that sends a mono signal.
Nowadays we create fake stereo inside the recording device by means of what we call a digital reverb or digital delay. This device takes a mono input (such as from a single microphone or from a single guitar cord) and simulates the sound as if it were playing in a much larger room, with positional information included--placing something in a simulated position in the stereo field and creating a simulated left stereo channel and a simulated right stereo channel.
So if you record one input, and put no effects on it, you get mono. If you run it through a stereo reverb or a stereo delay, you get simulated stereo.
If you put an acoustic guitar in a large, reverberant room, and set up two microphones, one on the left side of the room and one on the right side of the room, and record the two mono mike signals to a stereo track on your digital recorder, then you get real live stereo.
When you play a software instrument in GarageBand, it records it as a stereo signal. What you are usually getting is in fact a monophonic sample that is processed through a stereo reverb, simulating stereo. In some cases, it may actually be a digitally sampled musical instrument that was sampled in stereo, with two microphones, like the example of the guitar in the reverberant room that I mentioned above. Software instruments of drum kits and acoustic pianos are examples of instruments that are usually sampled as real or artificial stereo to begin with.
Beginners think "stereo" is the right way to record, and "mono" is not. But this has nothing to do with the right way to record, and has nothing to do with wheter it's a high quality recording. If you are recording through only one microphone, or only one guitar cord, this is mono, and that's right.

Good points, Wheat. And when you record from several sources, and combine them and mix them, panning things to "set the stage" you get a stereo mix, of mono recordings. SI, the final result is stereo, not necessarily each individual piece of the recording. Of course, a drum kit can be recorded in stereo, as well as some keyboards that are actually stereo. But most things you hear on CDs are a compilation of mono tracks, panned to create the stereo image you hear.

  • Which One and Why?

I am caught with various webmasters who continue to have problems that cause delays.  The entire website is developed with Flash/Dreamweaver.  I need to be able to be in a place where the next 'problem' (read excuse) does not delay this and other projects.
I think the Web Standard suite will give me what I need.
However, this does not include features found in the Web Premium package.
Money is tight.  Would the Web Standard do the job and what would it cost me to upgrade to the Web Premium at a later date.
Any advice for a person who does most of his coding as straight html with some php 'canned' codes.?
I do have resources that can assist in a coding question and debugging crunch and am fairly certain I can at least insert content etc with the right package.
I am also blind and it is difficult for rme to follow forums.  If this thing does not notify me of a response, please send a copy of your resonse to:
    [email protected]

    Thanks Bob,
Not enough info; goes to let you know how much I do not know.  What I know
is I cannot let important projects fall prey to webmasters who appear and
disappear.  I can't afford to hire someone responsible because I am a Human
Rights Activist and most of those I am fighting for don't have dime one and
    neither do I.
I am trying to get enough software in a single package as inexpensively as I
can to be able to add content to and edit a site that was built using
Dreamweaver and if 'Flash' intensive in the functions.
It looks like I can get the Web Standard Suite and not have Photoshop.  The
next level the Premium gives me Photoshop and Soundbooth.  I gather I will
need those to edit audio files and graphics.
Currently, I use Coffee Cup because I could afford it, but it limits what I
can do to straight html with xml and pahp canned inserts for forms and
    menus.
I will read your article and peruse your website to see what I can learn.
Thank you for taking the time to reply

I'm having problems uploading video taken with my iPhone 4 to Photobucket.  FB will not accept the file extension which is ex. IMG_423.  They will play on my computer and will upload to Facebook.  Why is the phone taking video with this file instead of something like .mov or mp4.  How can I change the extension after the fact and avoid it in the future?

You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.

Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.
The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....

  • Why won't my iPod work on iTunes or my computer?  It shows up (not on iTunes) and the iPod shows connected but it has to be "formatted." And why are half my songs unable to play on it anymore?  It just skips them!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine.  Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes.  The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected.  But it won’t show up in iTunes.  It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything.  It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.”  And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available.  Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)."  As if I know what that means!!  And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one.  It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why.  It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems.  And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about).  And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play.  You click on it and it plays the next one in the album.  And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs.  And songs I listen to a lot.  You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs.  But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work.  And I don’t know why.  I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems.  It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play.  I don’t know what is wrong or what to do.  I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything.  I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it.  It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle.   I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted.  And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol.  Plus it connects just fine.  It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on.  It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked.  I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help.  But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.

  • I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. Is it Lion?

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.
