Which computer to buy

I am sure this topic is discussed over and over again, I am sorry for that.  I am not a real techy person, so I'm reaching out to you all for some thoughts.  I have a 2008 Mac Pro, and run Photoshop CC and Lightroom.  I don't do any video editing. I shoot with a Canon 5D.  I am inpatient and hate waiting for functions to complete.  Color calibration is important for photography production. Would the new IMac I7 4.0 Ghz be a better bet than a Mac Pro Quad or 6 core?  Do any of you have experience on Retina Display's?  I am sure they are pretty to look at, but what I really care about is editing and printing, and speed. Does photoshop even utilize 6 core, or would that be over kill?  Thanks for you help.

Either have more than enough computing power both to stream via UPnP to an XBox 360 or similar, or to be connected directly to a TV and, rather than stream to your TV, simply use your TV as a display panel.
Based on your wording and your product selections both having HDMI, it seems that you want this to be connected directly to a TV via HDMI, rather than using one of the myriad methods of streaming to a TV. If that is the case, I'd highly recomment going with this one instead:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+Revo+Desktop+-+4GB+Memory+-+750GB+Hard+Drive/4789903.p?id=1218527...
It includes a Blu-Ray drive to replace a Blu-Ray player, and a special self-storing keyboard and mouse designed to be used at a distance.
I'm a former Geek Squad employee, and I've spent my entire life and career taming technology. Kudos appreciated.

  • Dragon Voice Recognition Program. Which computer to buy?

    Hi!
Can someone give me a laptop recommendation?
    I've been told I need an i7 L3 minimum 8GB laptop.
I see that BEST BUY offers this configuration in Lenova, Asus, and HP.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a solid computer with these configurations?
    Thanks!

my feeling is that the industry is pretty
much cross-platform at this point. From what I can
tell, he might never need to work on a PC, ever.
Possibly so, but there's grey areas in there. While ten years ago it was almost exclusively Mac-based, once Avid made the shift to Windows (immediately following their purchase by Microsoft, who within a few short years sold the company, leaving chaos in their wake), the dyke was broken. Nowadays you'll find Mac shops, PC shops, and companies that mix both platforms. BUT, the only software that is truly cross-platform is Avid. And remember - it IS the proverbial 800lb gorillla in the editing business, so skills learnt on a Mac Avid directly translate to PC Avid - the software is to all intents and purposes identical across both OS's. There's countless numbers of other editing systems on the Windows platform, none of which are any good in this writers opinion, but you can't deny there's a lot of work being done on Windows. I myself only own Macs and FCP, and will choose to use that solution when possible, but these past few weeks I'm working on a PC Avid. It's essential to have some cross-platform exposure, and very handy indeed to know more than one application.
But anything other than Avid or FCP is a complete waste of time if you want to be a working editor. Advise your b-in-l to get an Intel Mac, he won't regret it and he'll have the safety of knowing he'll be able to run both OS's. (As if he'd ever want to....)

  • Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend?

Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run the latest Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend for best speed and perfromance?

Depending on the software you'll use - I doubt you'll be an expert on After Effects and use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver like a pro (you may be an exception) - I have a 13" Macbook Pro simply because the 15" lacks the portability of the smaller size - the Retina 15" is alot lighter and if you can afford it - go for it!
I bought the Macbook Pro and replaced the 4GB of RAM with 8GB of RAM and replaced the HDD with an m4 SSD from Crucial. The SSD really makes a difference in app start up speeds, loading times and bootup speeds. The RAM ensures apps operate smoothly and everything is snappy. Since getting an SSD, I would say the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator is vastly improved. I can have both open whilst surfing the web, checking my email and even using Dreamweaver every once in a while. Multitasking is great.
To conclude, depedning on your price range, buying a £999 Macbook Pro and swapping the HDD for an SSD and the 4GB of RAm to 8GB, will ensure better performance than both 15" Models. However, buying a 15" Model and maxing out the specs, would beat the performance of a maxed out 13".
I have a 13" and it runs faster than it was when I first purchased it last year. Photoshop opens in 2/3 seconds and performance is great.
    Hope this helps.
P.S. If you have the money, get the 15" Retina. If not, max out the 13" if you still want portability. Otherwise, get the 15" and max that out if you feel performance is poor.
The reason I say Retina, is because the maxed ram and SSD is already installed and saves alot of hassle aswell as the slimmer design and lighter weight.

  • Which HP to buy?

    Hello,
I am looking to buying a new HP desktop. I just need it for school work, and other daily computer things. I don't want top of the line but I want it to still be fast.
I have picked out four HPs
    p61104

I would greatly appreciate someone's feedback on which computer would be the best for me, thanks!

I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15-e002au Notebook and needing information about your battery. Here is a link to your manual page 46. It shows me you need the battery 6-cell, 62-Wh, 2.80-Ah, Li-ion battery 710417-001. The other battery was not installed in your machine. Here is a link to the Product Specifications for your Notebook. I hope this answers your concerns. Thanks.

  • Which Desktop to Buy for Solaris 8 ???

    Hi,
Recently I bought a Dell Dimension 4100 system and found out that Solaris 8 does not install on that because of some acpi problems.
Now I am returning the system and planning to buy another one.
Can somebody tell me which system to buy so that I am able to sucessfully install Solaris 8 on it.
I checked the Hardware Compatibality list but it either lists expensive servers or outdated desktops which the manufacturers no longer sell.
I am looking to buy a P3 atleast with 1GHz Clock Speed.
If somebody knows then please let me know.
    Thanks
    Anurag

I recommend you stay away from the 21.5" iMac and Mac mini because they cannot be upgraded. Upgrading the 27" iMac's memory when you need the extra RAM will be less expensive than maxing out the RAM now and less expensive than replacing the computer a couple years from now. The retina iMac is beautiful but in your work how many times have you felt your 2007 iMac lacked pixels? Maybe you'd benefit from it, maybe not. When it comes to the difference between displays I've always recommended people sit down in front of them and see. Looking at the specs, my wife's display looks like a winner. She loves using it, I hate it. Displays are a very personal choice.

hello i want to learn that if i buy adobe can i use it two of my computers or only which one i buy it from ? pls answer it,waiting to buy it

For example you can activate on your home computer and  another that you use for travel or work. You cannot let someone use that second computer at the same time you are using the first.

  • This serial number has already been activated on 2 computers." Can i trace which computer is already used???

This serial number has already been activated on 2 computers." Can i trace which computer is already used???
Please help how to trace used license key?

Just call up tech support.  Have proof that you are the legitimate owner handy, and they will invalidate the other serial activations. Not need to track people down yourself.  And no, you can't do that anyway.
Did you buy your copy from a legitimate source, or from eBay?

  • Which model to buy...

I need some help deciding which model to buy. I currently own an:
    imac g4 800 MHz
with a 15 inch flat panel
    512MB SDRAM
    60G Hard drive
2x Superdrive that only writes to DVD-R
There is no question in my mind that an upgrade would make me happy. I just need to decide on what to upgrade to.
I may have narrowed it down to any of the imac g5 models.
First, i'd like to know if i would experience a significant difference editing in final cut pro (i do freelance video editing) with a new imac g5 as compared to editing in my current imac g4 (particularly in exporting and compressing). Ofcourse, i'm certain that it would be faster. But i may be expecting too much of a difference. Apple even goes so far as saying "forget you ever waited for your computer to do what you said" on the website. The optimist in me wants to expect something mind blowingly fast. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.
Now, to my specific choices (i've narrowed it down to 2, based on my budget which i've stretched to its limit):
    (1) imac 17"/2GHz/512/400G
    or
    (2) imac 20"/2GHz/512/250G
Option 2 is just about $20 more expensive than option 1. So i'm leaning towards option 2 because I do alot of graphic arts, web design and video editing work and a big canvas to work on really makes a big difference for me. But i'm also thinking that the 150G extra hard disk space could be very useful.
So, it's a question of bigger display or bigger hard drive for me.
I'm still leaning towards option 2 because I can eventually buy an external HD in the future if ever i'll need it and have enough money (is this a good idea? i've seen a few "problems with external HD" posts in the forum).
    So in summation:
    In purchasing my new mac...
    (1) Will I experience a mind blowing difference editing videos in final cut pro compared to the current mac that i currently have?
    (2) bigger display or bigger hard drive?
And if you think I should choose from a different set of options, please feel free to suggest. I will be more confused, but I always believe in putting much thought in purchases like these. If you've read this far, thank you and my apologies.

Well I am going to throw a wrench in the works...
I not going to give a complete History here, but I have edited on a 800MHz iMac G4, an iMac 1.6 G5, and a couple of PowerMac G5's. I have also used Photoshop on all 3. For my money, I would get a Dual. Maybe wait for a refurbished on the Apple site or check eBay. IMHO, a fast dual G4 will outperform a slow single G5. Of course a Dual G5 would be the best. Is there a mind-boggling speed difference between the single G5 and the double? There will be in rendering. This is one process that REALLY uses both processors. Besides that, I think you would more likely see a mind-boggling performance increase in the dual. I can Compress my video and still work in Photoshop and hardly know it on a Dual G5. I could not do that on my iMac G5. You would know when processor intensive tasks were being performed. Finally, you break out of the all-in-constraint. Maybe you don't get the biggest screen now, but you can add one later (& CRTs are better for color & cheaper!), you can add a hard drive (highly recommended), more RAM, a PCI firewire card (which bypasses 99% of all the problems you read about) and so on. The next time you need to upgrade computers, the only thing you will need to upgrade is the computer. And a refurbished G5 isn't anymore than a new iMac. I should also add that the more RAM in any machine the better, but it won't make any difference in terms of rendering. Rendering is processor intensive. Period.

You can use the same Apple ID for both phones, you would then be able to use the purchased Apps/Content on both phones without having to pay again.

  • How can I determine which computer a share is connected to in /Volumes from terminal or a script?

I run a set of virtual machines via Fusion on an iMac that we run automated tests on for our website.  There is a folder on each VM called /Automation that is shared.
I have a python script that runs on the host, that will find an open VM, start it up and then mount the VM's /Automation folder.  So if there is only 1 VM powered on, the folder shows up in /Volumes as /Volumes/Automation.  The  problem is when there are 2 or more VM's powered on, because then the shares start being named /Volumes/Automation-1 and Automation-2 etc.  So my question is, how can I determine which computer each share belongs to from terminal or a script?
In other words, I'm looking for something like:
    /Volumes/Automation = "FirstVirtualMachineName.local"
    /Volumes/Automation-1 = "SecondVirtualMachineName.local"
Is there any way to determine which computer a mounted share is connected to?  In the past, I've just unmounted all /Automation folders, and then mounted them in a particular order, but that's unreliable and messy in my opinion.  If anyone knows a better way, please let me know.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Well I think I have a workable solution.  It's not perfect, but I think it will do the trick. I can put a spotlight comment on the folder similar to 'HostName=OSX-Automation-1.local' and can then retrieve that value from our server with the following python snippet:
    import subprocess
    out,err = subprocess.Popen(['osascript','-e','tell application \"Finder\" to get comment of \"Macintosh HD:Volumes:Automation-1\"'],stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE).communciate()
So I could just loop through each 'Automation*' folder in /Volumes and grab the name from the spotlight attributes on the directories.  I don't think I really need to worry about the comments being overwritten, but I may have one of our launch daemons that run on the VM check that spotlight comment once a minute or something to ensure that the correct value is there.
If it ends up not working well in practice, I'm going to give your suggestion about a config script a shot.  It would require a little more up front work, but seems as if it would be pretty solid after that.
Thanks again for helping me think it through

  • Choosing which  computer to synch my iphone to.

Now that I have an iPhone, I need some advice about which computer to synch to as I can only choose one. I am choosing between a MacBook Pro with Leapard plus Windows XP imbedded, and 3 PC's with Windows XP and different vintages as regards RAM, memory, CPU type and speed. Each computer is set up for different purposes: (1)My personal laptop, A 2005 GQ computer with AMD Turion 64 (1.6 GHz), upgraded 1.12GB RAM and 111 GB HD)mostly usded for personal e-mail and personal web browsing; (2)A HP Pavillion desktop with 2.8 GHZ Celeron, 504 MB RAM, and 67.5 GB HD connected to a big screen LCD/TV and used mostly for entertainment; (3)A Dell Latitude D430 (1.2GHz 790MHz Core 2; 0.99GB Ram, 74GB HD)issued to me by company I work for, set up with VPN and microsoft exchange, and a Verizon Wireless account; and (5) A MaCBook Pro (2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM) with Leopard and XP coinstalled and used mostly for company videoconferencing.
Do I choose one of my personal computers so I don't have to port everything over and reinstall if I change employers? Among personal computers do I choose the desktop since it connects to my big screen LCD/TV and my 7.1 audio system? I don't use Outlook or most Office programs on this computer and so the ability to synch up with my personal or professional e-mail, or Word, Excel or Powerpoint files is not there.
Do I choose my personal laptop or the Dell work laptop? The work laptop has the most Office files of all types, but then I would have to load my personal music and movie files from an external HD to the iPhone through the work laptop. And what happens to my iphone files if I change employers?
Do I choose the Work Mac because it is a Mac and there are
many things I can do with Iphone that requires having a Mac but I just don't know what those apps are? Here I could synch with my work e-mail, and download the music and movies from external drive, but for most office programs I will not be using the Mac. What about GarageBand? How do I access MPEG files that I have created. Is it easier with a mac? Can I preserve all my files easily if I give up the Mac?
So the advice I need is about the many features the IPhone offers.. how important is CPU processing power, or synching with office programs versus with music or video?
Thanks for any help with this.

Here are just a few suggestions others and by no means is exhaustive, I am sure others will weigh in.
-Just a cursory read of the support forum I have not seen overwhelming complaints that iPhone does not work with windows. It seems mac and windows work equally well with the iPhone
-Ringtones if you like ringtones and could see your self loading your iPhone up go with the mac. Garage Band gives you the ability to make ring tones from your own music collection for free. There are down loads like iToner etc that are unofficial ring tone makers so it makes it a little more difficult to you use.
-As long as memory of your devices exceeds 16 GB (which is as high as the iPhone goes) you will be able to take full advantage of your iPhone. Anything more will not make a difference.
-There is no heavy processing involved with your iPhone syncing to your desktop/laptop. What we are taking about is down loading contact lists music etc. No real graphics rendering is taking place. The iPhone is a seperate system you desktop/laptop to manage your iPhone for preferences downloads etc. So processing speeds do not matter that much.
-iPhone apps work with any iPhone regardless of what OS it is synced to. Even if you would like to use Mobile Me it can utilize some windows programs.
What I would do is figure out which or your personal computers you use most. Then I would set up a Mobile Me account then I would add all other computers you might use to sync with your Mobile Me account and this would solve all of your problems, for 99 bucks/year that is.

  • How can I change which computer taht is my main?

How can I change which computer that is my main without loosing all my APPS, all my music etc when I sync?
When I first used my iPhone i was on my work computer, but now I can't sync it on my home computer without loosing all data? That isn't a good design solution at all.
Is there any way to change the authentication from my work computer to my home?
There should really be a better way to solve this, instead of forcing alot of users to "Choose" only 1 computer, I mean I believe many have maybe 2 or 3 computers that they want to use there iDevices on... Please help me!
