Which computer

OK everyone... I am having a tough time deciding what computer to get. I narrowed it down between 2. A 15" Powerbook G4 and the 20" iMac G5 (the model right before the built in isight.)
Help me decide.
Do I want the 2.0 ghz G5 with a 20" screen or do I want the 1.67 ghz g4 with 15" screen but portable?
Both can take 2.5 gigs of ram, so I will have enough ram to run cs apps and apple pro apps.

In essence both systems you're deciding between are "all in one" units, so you've already ruled out a G5 tower which is more expandable. Besides, you have a Mac Mini already, so you have a 'fixed' computer (kinda).
With that in mind, how important is portability? You pay a premium for that portability, so if you don't need it go with the more powerful iMac G5.
Then again, I've found all sorts of uses for portability, once I got my Powerbook, which I didn't anticipate originally. It's pretty sweet to be able to show videos, presentations, or play custom audio on-the-go, whether it's a demo to present to a potential client, or showing home movies to my grandma. Or plug it into my TV to watch iTunes videos. (they don't look half bad, either!)
In terms of the space they take up, that's a wash really. You're gonna need the same amount of workspace either way.
Also keep in mind that a Powerbook purchase does not often end with the Powerbook itself - there are so many goodies for it, essential or otherwise. A sleeve, or an extra power adapter, or an extra battery. Or a cooling pad. Or bluetooth mouse. Also if you're not typically an Applecare type of person, you might reconsider for a Powerbook, which can be expensive to repair once its out of warranty (like if the screen goes bad, expect to pay in the $1000 dollar range when all's said and done to get a new one).
Hopefully I haven't confused the issue for you even further...just trying to bring up some points to consider. I'd break out a notepad and do the good old "plus and minus" column and get as many variables on paper as you can before deciding.

  • How can I determine which computer a share is connected to in /Volumes from terminal or a script?

I run a set of virtual machines via Fusion on an iMac that we run automated tests on for our website.  There is a folder on each VM called /Automation that is shared.
I have a python script that runs on the host, that will find an open VM, start it up and then mount the VM's /Automation folder.  So if there is only 1 VM powered on, the folder shows up in /Volumes as /Volumes/Automation.  The  problem is when there are 2 or more VM's powered on, because then the shares start being named /Volumes/Automation-1 and Automation-2 etc.  So my question is, how can I determine which computer each share belongs to from terminal or a script?
In other words, I'm looking for something like:
    /Volumes/Automation = "FirstVirtualMachineName.local"
    /Volumes/Automation-1 = "SecondVirtualMachineName.local"
Is there any way to determine which computer a mounted share is connected to?  In the past, I've just unmounted all /Automation folders, and then mounted them in a particular order, but that's unreliable and messy in my opinion.  If anyone knows a better way, please let me know.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Well I think I have a workable solution.  It's not perfect, but I think it will do the trick. I can put a spotlight comment on the folder similar to 'HostName=OSX-Automation-1.local' and can then retrieve that value from our server with the following python snippet:
    import subprocess
    out,err = subprocess.Popen(['osascript','-e','tell application \"Finder\" to get comment of \"Macintosh HD:Volumes:Automation-1\"'],stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE).communciate()
So I could just loop through each 'Automation*' folder in /Volumes and grab the name from the spotlight attributes on the directories.  I don't think I really need to worry about the comments being overwritten, but I may have one of our launch daemons that run on the VM check that spotlight comment once a minute or something to ensure that the correct value is there.
If it ends up not working well in practice, I'm going to give your suggestion about a config script a shot.  It would require a little more up front work, but seems as if it would be pretty solid after that.
Thanks again for helping me think it through

  • Choosing which  computer to synch my iphone to.

Now that I have an iPhone, I need some advice about which computer to synch to as I can only choose one. I am choosing between a MacBook Pro with Leapard plus Windows XP imbedded, and 3 PC's with Windows XP and different vintages as regards RAM, memory, CPU type and speed. Each computer is set up for different purposes: (1)My personal laptop, A 2005 GQ computer with AMD Turion 64 (1.6 GHz), upgraded 1.12GB RAM and 111 GB HD)mostly usded for personal e-mail and personal web browsing; (2)A HP Pavillion desktop with 2.8 GHZ Celeron, 504 MB RAM, and 67.5 GB HD connected to a big screen LCD/TV and used mostly for entertainment; (3)A Dell Latitude D430 (1.2GHz 790MHz Core 2; 0.99GB Ram, 74GB HD)issued to me by company I work for, set up with VPN and microsoft exchange, and a Verizon Wireless account; and (5) A MaCBook Pro (2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM) with Leopard and XP coinstalled and used mostly for company videoconferencing.
Do I choose one of my personal computers so I don't have to port everything over and reinstall if I change employers? Among personal computers do I choose the desktop since it connects to my big screen LCD/TV and my 7.1 audio system? I don't use Outlook or most Office programs on this computer and so the ability to synch up with my personal or professional e-mail, or Word, Excel or Powerpoint files is not there.
Do I choose my personal laptop or the Dell work laptop? The work laptop has the most Office files of all types, but then I would have to load my personal music and movie files from an external HD to the iPhone through the work laptop. And what happens to my iphone files if I change employers?
Do I choose the Work Mac because it is a Mac and there are
many things I can do with Iphone that requires having a Mac but I just don't know what those apps are? Here I could synch with my work e-mail, and download the music and movies from external drive, but for most office programs I will not be using the Mac. What about GarageBand? How do I access MPEG files that I have created. Is it easier with a mac? Can I preserve all my files easily if I give up the Mac?
So the advice I need is about the many features the IPhone offers.. how important is CPU processing power, or synching with office programs versus with music or video?
Thanks for any help with this.

Here are just a few suggestions others and by no means is exhaustive, I am sure others will weigh in.
-Just a cursory read of the support forum I have not seen overwhelming complaints that iPhone does not work with windows. It seems mac and windows work equally well with the iPhone
-Ringtones if you like ringtones and could see your self loading your iPhone up go with the mac. Garage Band gives you the ability to make ring tones from your own music collection for free. There are down loads like iToner etc that are unofficial ring tone makers so it makes it a little more difficult to you use.
-As long as memory of your devices exceeds 16 GB (which is as high as the iPhone goes) you will be able to take full advantage of your iPhone. Anything more will not make a difference.
-There is no heavy processing involved with your iPhone syncing to your desktop/laptop. What we are taking about is down loading contact lists music etc. No real graphics rendering is taking place. The iPhone is a seperate system you desktop/laptop to manage your iPhone for preferences downloads etc. So processing speeds do not matter that much.
-iPhone apps work with any iPhone regardless of what OS it is synced to. Even if you would like to use Mobile Me it can utilize some windows programs.
What I would do is figure out which or your personal computers you use most. Then I would set up a Mobile Me account then I would add all other computers you might use to sync with your Mobile Me account and this would solve all of your problems, for 99 bucks/year that is.

  • How can I change which computer taht is my main?

How can I change which computer that is my main without loosing all my APPS, all my music etc when I sync?
When I first used my iPhone i was on my work computer, but now I can't sync it on my home computer without loosing all data? That isn't a good design solution at all.
Is there any way to change the authentication from my work computer to my home?
There should really be a better way to solve this, instead of forcing alot of users to "Choose" only 1 computer, I mean I believe many have maybe 2 or 3 computers that they want to use there iDevices on... Please help me!

  • How can you tell which computer that is authorized as the master?

I have several computers that I have connected my iPhone to. How can I tell which computer I should connect to before updating the operating system? I don't want to loss data if I don't have to.

I am not that familiar with Apple and iTunes and was getting help from someone who said that I can plug my iPhone into my computers but that I would have to authorize the iPhone on each but the limit is 5.
    This is not accurate.
You can authorize up to 5 computers with the same iTunes account. There is no device limit for the number of iPods, iPads, and iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
An iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on one computer only, and photos can be transferred from one computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
This is why I asked - you have connected your iPhone to each one of these computers for what?
I was not sure which computer I first used. Is there a simple way to check?
No, or I would have provided that with my first reply.
If you connect your iPhone to a "non-master" computer to install the update, you will be provided a warning.
How many computers are you talking about? If 5 or less, this should take you no more than 10 minutes to determine which computer you transferred music and photos from.

Good Question - I have only one use case which is similiar...
I have a cRIO which hosts a NSV library which is bound to a mirror library on the PC.  The PC library
is set to log to a Citadel DB.  When my cRIO RT software writes values to the NSV the timestamp is created
at the instant the write occurs using the RT system clock (which incidentally is sync'd to GPS time).  This timestamp is preverved all
the way up to the PC and the Citadel DB.

  • Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend?

Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run the latest Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend for best speed and perfromance?

Depending on the software you'll use - I doubt you'll be an expert on After Effects and use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver like a pro (you may be an exception) - I have a 13" Macbook Pro simply because the 15" lacks the portability of the smaller size - the Retina 15" is alot lighter and if you can afford it - go for it!
I bought the Macbook Pro and replaced the 4GB of RAM with 8GB of RAM and replaced the HDD with an m4 SSD from Crucial. The SSD really makes a difference in app start up speeds, loading times and bootup speeds. The RAM ensures apps operate smoothly and everything is snappy. Since getting an SSD, I would say the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator is vastly improved. I can have both open whilst surfing the web, checking my email and even using Dreamweaver every once in a while. Multitasking is great.
To conclude, depedning on your price range, buying a £999 Macbook Pro and swapping the HDD for an SSD and the 4GB of RAm to 8GB, will ensure better performance than both 15" Models. However, buying a 15" Model and maxing out the specs, would beat the performance of a maxed out 13".
I have a 13" and it runs faster than it was when I first purchased it last year. Photoshop opens in 2/3 seconds and performance is great.
    Hope this helps.
P.S. If you have the money, get the 15" Retina. If not, max out the 13" if you still want portability. Otherwise, get the 15" and max that out if you feel performance is poor.
The reason I say Retina, is because the maxed ram and SSD is already installed and saves alot of hassle aswell as the slimmer design and lighter weight.

  • Permissions on a file change depending on which computer is being used

I have a file that does not have the same permissions depending on which computer it is on.
On three computers (one using OS 10.3.9, one using OS 10.3.7, and one using OS 10.4), in the get info panel, the owner is listed as the user of the computer and the first line states: You can read and write.
One a fourth computer using OS 10.3.9, the same file shows up with owner listed as "nobody" and the first line in the get info panel states:
    You have no access.
What is going on with that fourth computer? How can I get it to have the same ownership and permissions as the other three computers without having to manually go in and change these items? I use this computer to archive files and the archiving gets done automatically, i.e. without human intervention. Right now it's not working because there are numerous files with this ownership problem.
    Thanks,
    Sue Lange

I'm not sure what you mean by using apple file sharing. I go to the "Go" menu. Find the computer on the network. Select "Connect to Server." Browse to find the computer. Select that computer. Sign in as "guest." The computer's public folder is then mounted on my desktop. I drag the files over to the mounted computer.
I just tried to do it the opposite way (mount the original "from" computer on the "to" computer and drag the files into the public folder.) Most files work fine, but the files I'm having trouble with are not moving. They go through the motions of moving, but do not show up. These files have some sort of security attached to them from the originators. No one on site is the originator so we can't fix the problem by changing permissions. Again, everyone else is able to work with these files except the one computer.
    Thanks,
    Sue Lange

  • Which Computer needed for High Def video

I purchased a Panasonic HDC-TM900 High def camcorder and don't have enough computer power to edit the video. Which computer or how much processor power do I need.
    thanks

    Hmm....
what software did the camera come with?
What does the manual/documentation say for computer requirements?
Yes, I do encourage i7 or quad-core for best performance
Budget a few hundred gigabytes of hard drive space for render space for hour long projects
    I like 7200rpm drives
If you are getting paid for your work, don't hesistate to double or triple your budget.
Have you considered a high-end gaming laptop to showcase your work or work right at your clients?  I do my work on a gaming laptop and it's much more rewarding to showcase my work and make edits on the spot with a client.
Again your camera is capable of 3D.  Don't limit your hardware to 2D.
    With regards to software
I like Pinnacle Studio for raw performance and excellent interface when I'm trimming clips.
I like Avid Studio for Picture and Picture.  Pinnacle is limited to 2 video streams.
I like Corel VideoStudio Ultimate (still learning it) for 3D support
Seriously research and look for a local demonstation of Matrox MXO2.  If you are making money on your projects, being able to render and post your videos with the shortest amount of time with make you more attractive to a client.  It also frees up your personal time.
Panasonic's camera is still kinda new, you are going to need to research if products identified supports your camera.
