Which Digital video camcorder?

Hello,
I just purchased a Mac Air with Final Cut Express on it. I am in the market for a digital video camcorder (I have an old sony, 10 yrs ago that is broken). can anyone give any experience with the new digital video camcorders and which kinds may work best with my Mac? I really like to the hard drive models, high definition, will the ACVHD codec cause a problem? I don't think the Air has a firewire but it does have a USB port.

Thank you for your reply. I got the Mac Air for portability at work and I will be using it while I travel this summer. I also have an iMac and a 1/2 TB Time Capsule for extra storage (I work with digital image data alot, but not yet video data). Can Final Cut be used on the iMac? I think I can hook up a camcorder via firewire to the Time Capsule and use my iMac for processing. I realize the AVCHD codec uses a sequence of one frame followed by 4 frames that record changes from the main frame. The AIC expands the data I see, it must fill in the data on the missing frames. Does Final Cut give easier options for editing the expanded data? If so then I guess hard disk models that use AVCHD would be OK.
I do not want tapes (there are start and stop issues with more than one user, also storage issues) and DVDs don't seem to store much. That is why I was looking at the hard disk models, although I guess the flash drive models might work as well from that aspect. I do not know what format or codec the flash drive models typically use. The Canon HG10 or Canon HF100 are what has been recommended to me by friends.

I am not an expert but I believe it does. I have the same camcorder and MacBook Pro. The laptop recognizes the camera and it is a straight forward import from camera to iMovie.

Hi all,
I have a Canon MV6i Digital Video Camcorder, that uses MiniDV, and not too long ago changed from a PowerBook to a MacBook Pro. My new Mac does not seem to want to recognise the Camera, I have attempted using both USB and FireWire, and have also recently upgraded iLife, hoping that it will make a difference.
Unfortunately it still seems that the MacBook Pro does NOT recognise the Camcorder. Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something?
How can I get it to work? I have also thought of getting a new Camcorder, but then why, when this one should work, or not?
How can I make it work?
Help me someone PLS, as I do have a LOT of "sentimental Video" that I want to use.

Best Plug and Play Digital Video Camcorder

I am looking to buy a flash memory video camcorder. What are some of the easiest to use plug and play models that people are using? I don't want to spend a lot of money, looking to stay under $550.

Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-

Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.

Mac OS X Digital Video Camcorder

My husband just surprised me with a digital camcorder to use on Christmas Day and I have discovered that it is not Mac compatible. It is a Canon FS100 Kit, but is for a PC. I looked on the Canon website and could not find a video camera compatible with my Mac. Can someone please give me some suggestions on a type or brand name that will work?
A couple of years ago I asked for info on a digital camera and got excellent advice on what camera to buy.

The supported list is right there in my reply - the line that says iMovie '08 Camcorder Support. Click on it and you will be magically transported to the correct page. Apparently there have been some compatibility challenges with that camera, but some folks have reported success. It really should be as easy as "plugging it in" so if yours isn't working that way, go to the iMovie forums and ask.

Digital Video Recorder with Firewire 400 and new iMac

I just got a new iMac which has only 1 firewire800 and no firewire 400 ports. My digital video camcorder has a firewire 400 cable to transfer taped recordings to the computer (I want to import using iMovie 09). So, do I simply need to buy a new firewire 800 cable that will plug into my digital camcorder? The reason I'm hesitant is that I've tried using a USB connection, and iMovie 09 didn't open and doesn't recognize that the digital camcorder is connected when I use USB. Does iMovie 09 just no longer recognize my several year old Samsung digital camcorder, or does it just not recognize it with a USB connection, and it will be fine if I get a firewire 800 connection that fits the new iMac? Is there another type of converter--e.g., a cable that allows a firewire 400 to plug in on one end and has the firewire 800 connection on the other end?

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and got a new cable and now I can plug for digital video camcorder into my new Mac. Unfortunately, as I feared, the Mac still doesn't recognize the camcorder. I checked the system profiler with the camcorder plugged in, and under Firewire Bus it reads Unknown Device:

Transfer digital video to iMacG5 using 10.4.3

I recently purchased a Panasomic PV-GS65 digital video camcorder. I use operating system OS X 10.4 on an iMacG5. I am trying to transfer my digital video from the miniDV to my computer using the USB connection cable provided by Panasonic, and I cannot get the computer to recognize the input. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Please help.

strangedogs is quite right, Leonard. You definitely need a firewire cable, I'm afraid.
I have an almost identical camera (the GS75). USB is only for stills with this one. It always amazes me when they don't include a cable that is critical to function, but do include others which are less important! In my case I fortunately found that a 4 to 6 pin cable that actually came with my old iMac G3 DV+ was fine for the purpose (all my other FW cables are 6 pin to 6 pin - you need 4 pin for the camera end).
Plug the cable in, set the mode dial on the camera to movie playback , fire up iMovie , and away you go.

Elgato video capture versus digital 8 camcorder to import hi 8 movies

Hi!
I have hi 8 video tapes which i want to import into my MacBook.
I would like to work on them with iMovie 09, cut them, set titles etc. put music on and so on.
Earlier I plugged my hi 8 camcorder into my panasonic DMR E85H dvd recorder with built in hdd.
Then i importet them via handbrake into my MacBook.
Then i importet them into iMovie 08 an did some cutting and so on.
Then i recognized, that there where horizontal interferences in the movie.
On the dvds the video is ok!
It doesn´t matter if i play the videos in Quicktime or in iTunes or iMovie.
If i would use a Elgato Video Capture to import or a digital 8 camcorder to import the videos to my MacBook would i be able to get a better result?
Which one should i prefer - i have to buy each of them!
Would the size of the camcorder-imported videos be bigger then with the Elgato device?
Now i´m using iMovie 09.

Based on your comments about horizontal interferences, it may be that you are seeing interlace artifacts. The solution may be to deinterlace the clips.
You might try checking the settings in handbrake to deinterlace.
You might also take the clip you have produced in HB and deinterlacing using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer.
Your MPEG2 on DVD is already compressed from the original on tape. Then HandBrake decompresses and recompresses it to h.264. You generally want to cut out compression steps in your workflow whenever possible, because each generation of compression will introduce noise and loss.
You could also reimport from DVD using MPEG Streamclip (and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component). You could deinterlace at this step if needed.
You could certainly import through a camcorder with passthru capability. It will be DV which will be a very high data rate and potentially high quality, but it will never be higher quality than the underlying analog material. But you will have eliminated a compression step so you will be closer to the original.
ElGato products will certainly work as well. I use the ElGato EyeTV hybrid to capture from a VHS Deck, as well as to record high definition TV shows. My ElGato will capture to MPEG2, although the newer models may capture directly to MPEG4 (not sure). You would then use the ElGato software to export to iMovie in an editable format such as h.264 or Apple Intermediate Codec.

How can I upload digital video from a HDD camcorder to iMac Intel?

I bought a Sony DCR SR100 camcorder with 30 gig HD, and the software that comes with it is Windows only, and the Mac software that they refer you to on the internet says "not Intel Core compatible"
So get this - the online support guy from Sony says to get a digital to analog conversion card to load the video thru the AV jacks. I reminded him that I'm starting with digital video in MPEG2 on the camera's hard drive - which is essentially an external hard drive. Converting to analog didn't sound right.
So there is an easy, no-brainer way to do this I'm sure (that is I hope)

The problem (I discovered) is that the files are "muxed" which means that the audio and video are somehow intermixed, so they need to be converted into a standard that iMovieHD can read, like "DV"
There is a shareware called MPEG STREAMCLIP that converts video into other things. I tested it and it does work. I just need to figure out the most efficient way to import, convert and open in iMovie.

Downloading digital video from camcorder using USB

I know this is not really a new topic, but I am new to all this and can't figure out how to post to an existing topic which addresses it. I found a posting which says I can download digital video by opening "Image Capture" and under preferences telling what I want done when a USB camcorder is connected. I find that preferences does not specifically ask about USB, but does ask, when a camcorder is connected, if I want to open Image Capture, IPhoto, or no application. I selected Image Capture, connected the camcorder through a USB port, set the camcorder to play/edit, and got nothing, no acknowledgement that the computer recognizes the presence of the camcorder. Now what?

Well, I tried Firewire, which I thought myself would solve the problem. Bought a new Firewire cable because I have never had one. Plugged the 4-pin into my camcorder, and the 6-pin into a Firewire port on my eMac. Turned the camcorder on to Play/edit, which is the playback setting. No indication on the computer that the camcorder is connected. Tried Image Capture, iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie. None of them gave me anything. I suppose there is a slim possibility that the cable is defective, but I don't have any other Firewire peripherals, so I don't know how to check it. Any suggestions on that or any other way to troubleshoot? I also tried playback of a video in the camcorder. It plays fine internally, but still no response from the computer.

Which is the best MacBook for me to buy if I want to use it for digital video editing as well as Photoshop?

All the Apple MacBooks have been upgraded. I am looking for either a MacBook Pro or a MacBook that I can use to edit digital videos and do some Photoshop work. Which one would you advise me to go for? I am considering the 13”.

I recommend the 15-inch MacBook Pro if you can afford it. That's because Photoshop runs better on a dedicated graphic card, which only the 15-inch MacBook Pro includes, but it should run without any problem on a 13-inch MacBook Pro too

Which digital camera makes videos that can be directly imported to iMove 5

I currently own a Sony Cibershot P8 and when I shoot videos on it they are Muxed. I don't know a whole lot about that except I think it means multi-layerd. The issue I have is that I have to tweak my videos in another program before I can hear the audio in iMovie.
Now that I'm in the market for a new camera I was wondering if there were any out there which produced videos in a format that could be edited directly in iMovie without being modified beforehand. Does anyone have any suggestions? My target is in the $300 price range with a max of $400.

Sorry - my mistake, I did not notice that you were talking about a still-camera. I believe some cameras may record video in MPEG4 format, which would be compatible. Do a Google search (as I just have - there are several options).
Others may want to comment further on your requirements.

Kodak Megaplus 1.4 CCD Camera. This camera is an old model with Camera Control Unit. Now we use Excel Macro works with all of these software and hardware and the whole system works excellent. Now we intend to update the software to Labview 6.1, IMAQ vision builder and IMAQ vision. But we didn't find the driver to let Labview work with EPIX(R) D PCI Digital Video Capture Board. I have contactd Epix Inc. They said some customers have developed their own driver for labview and it works fine.But this company doesn't support this driver. It will be appreciated if anyone ca
n provide this driver for us. Thank you very much.

George. You probably don't have many options with the Epix board. However, if your Epix software enables you to save files to disk, then you can open them from LabVIEW and process them with Vision or Vision Builder.
Another option is to contact Graftek (www.graftek.com) or ImageMill (www.imagemill-tech.com). They have created drivers for third party image acquisition boards in the past and they may have one for your Epix board.
A third option, of course, is to upgrade your Epix board to an NI IMAQ board. Your sales contact within NI may even be able to give you a discount on the trade in, but I can't guarantee it.
