Which DLT Tape Drive for Replicator

Which brand of DLT tape drive is recommended for DVDSP4 authoring? The DVD+R DL discs are good but the replicator would like for me to use a tape drive. Using Mac G5 w/dual 2.7 Ghz Power pc. 2gig ram. Thanks

Hi Ray,
A DLT 7000 (make sure it says "LVD SE" on it somewhere, and that you acquire the proper active terminator, along with an ATTO SCSI card to hook the DLT up to, for installation in PCI slot 2 if you're on a G5) using Type IV tapes will get you the fastest writes, while staying readable by all replicators.
A DLT 4000 (same as above) using Type III tapes is just as compatible with replicators, but darn slow writing in comparison.
A DLT 8000 (ditto) with Type IV tapes is the fastest writing in this legacy class of devices, but some replicators might not have one of those drives around. In that case, an 8000 can be set to write at 35G density (instead of 40G), so the replicators 7000's can read it's output.
Take care,
Trai

  • Need a DLT Tape Drive?

I have a DLT Tape Drive I was using up until I updated to the latest version of OSX.
I was using it with Retrospect. But now there is an OSX, Adaptec, SCSI, Retrospect issue.
The bottom line is that Retrospect won't work anymore with my setup.
Anyone need a DLT Tape drive.
    Save me from doing ebay.

It's probably your Adaptec Card no longer working under OSX. I think the Atto is the only one that will work reliably under the latest OS

  • Disk V$ Tape Drive for Rman

    Hi,
    Os : Aix,Red hat 4.2
    Db : 10
We taking rman backup which stores in Tape Drive.(It took 11 hours, incremental 0 level).due to ORA-27030 & ORA-19511,we couldn't use Tape drive temporarliy.
So we used disk for rman backup.(It took 4 hours to complete).
Which is best storage(ie fastest) for rman backup /restoration whether DISK or TAPE?
What are the factors determine it?
    Thanks & regards,
    VN

What is more important to you, then choose. It's simple: tape is more reliable and faster drives. At a cost of not very high volumes, they are about the same per megabyte. It - http://www.allbackup.ru/articles/article6.html - is more less actually.

  • Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Which harddrive/backup drive for my iMac

I have a 20" aluminum iMac, about 1 year old, running Leopard.
I the the internal HD has capacity for about 250GB if memory serves me right. I have about 200GB of stuff on it now, most of which is pictures in iphoto, music, and videos.
Was thinking I'm going to need an external hard drive for storage and/or backup. But I'm not sure if an external HD can accomplish both? Was looking at a Gtech or Lacie. Basically I'm going to run out of room on my internal drive, so how do I move my older photos lets say to the second HD? Simply copy them over? or is done by backup, then I can erase whats on my internal HD?
Also, I have a lot of videos, movies, etc. If I need to move them off the internal drive for space reasons, whats the best way, by backup thru time machine, or simply just cut and paste onto the new HD? Can the new HD act as a backup device along with a storage device at the same time? ie can I backup to it thru time machine, plus have say a bunch of movies sitting on it too, ready to access without having to restore them via time machine?
Sorry for all the ?'s. I'm sure there is an easy answer, just that I dont know the ins and outs of backing up, or simply using the external HD for storage, physically moving the files over
    Thanks for any help

I'm of two minds about this. I have reservations about Time Machine's and Time Capsule's stability and reliability (based mostly on both being first generation products). One problem we've seen with the combination of the two is the problem of Time Machine 'preparing' a backup but that preparation stage stalling. In most (but not all cases) this is fixable but I've seen/heard of a few cases where the only solution was to wipe the backups and start over. Not a good solution. This happens less frequently when TM is connected directly to the computer. Although I've done some pretty serious testing of TM and it has yet to fail me, it isn't time tested the way other backup programs are and that makes me think twice.
Further, TM isn't a bootable restore system so if your system becomes unbootable at the very least you have to install the OS again. I'd rather have a bootable backup (as part of my backup plan) so if I need to I can plug in an external drive, boot up, use TM to restore the last backup of files I was working on, and get right back to work.
At the moment I see TM as part of a backup system but not as the sole plan.

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
so lets be a little conservative and try
dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.

If /data1 directory has a sub-directory like /data1/aaa, /data1/bbb, /data1/ccc , Is it possible to use multiple drives?
    Please anybody answer the questions.

  • Quantum 8000 DLT Tape Drive

I've just bought one, but I don't have a clue what DLT tapes I should order for it?
    DLT III or DLT IV
    Or none of the above?

Both will work. The III will take twice as long to write. Buy tapes off EBay for some great deals.

  • Which 1TB hard drive for 2010 13"?

I'm looking for a new hard drive for my mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro.  As I understand it, 12.5mm drives should fit, so I can go up to 1Tb.  There is quite a variation in prices, ranging from £63 for a Samsung Spinpoint MT2, £75 for a Toshiba MK1059GSM, to £85 for a Western Digital Scorpio Blue.  Is there any real difference between them, or should I just go for the cheapest?

Get the Samsung. The WD Scorpio Blues are more often troublesome than most other drive lines, and I've had several lousy experiences with Toshiba drives in years past. I haven't seen any negative reports about the Samsung.

  • Can anyone give me the DLT tape drive compatibilty list?

    Dear All,
I am starting to make some DVD-9 project with DPS4. But I have to purchase a DLT drive. I have no idea which one to buy and I cannot find any information from the site. Please can anyone give me advice. Thanks in advance.
    Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Basically all DLt drives are made by Quantum and then rebadged by other manufacturers. The ones to look for are 4000, 7000 and 8000. If you can go for a 7000 or 8000 as i think these wrtite tapes faster and if your replicators accept them use DLT IV tapes as they write faster as well. The drives come up on ebay quite regularly and bargains can be had. I have bought six different drives over the years (some as back-ups just in case) and have never paid more than £100 for them (in the UK)
Don't forget you will also need a SCSI card for your Mac (Atto appear to be the only game in town anymore for Mac G5s) and SCSI leads and maybe an active terminator for the DLT Drive
    Hope this helps

  • Can I connect an external DLT Tape drive to the SCSI connector on an E450

Hi... totally new to SPARC. I have inherited an E450. It appears to have the 8 bay option. I have 6 scsi disk drives installed in slots 0 through 5. Internally, there is one ultra scsi controller in slot 2 and two internal cables running from the top of the card, one for each channel. I do have an extra ultra pci scsi card, but when I plugged it into a pci slot, the system would not boot. Bottom line, can I connect an external DLT drive to either Channel A or Channel B at the rear of the Unit and not intefere with other SCSI devices (i.e. the disk drives). Currently, the DLT is set to SCSI ID 8. If this isn't recommended, how do I install the secondary ultra scsi card and have the system recognize it ? Note that the Hard drives have been wiped and I WILL be loading Solaris 10, but have not yet. I wanted to make sure all of the hardware worked first. The second PCI Scsi controller I have is an Adaptec 39160, and I'm assumming it will work IF needed. I'd prefer not to use it if necessary.... ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated ! Thanks, Randy

I suggest you leave the current internal connections just as they are.
You never know when you'll need to add more disks.
That Adaptec card is for PC's.
It won't work in a Sun SPARC-based system.
What sort of SCSI interface is required for that tape device?
Single-Ended? High Voltage Differential? Low Voltage Differential?
You need a card that matches that interface type if you hope it to "drive" the tape.
One quick way to tell, is to examine the chassis of the tape peripheral
and find the small icon that should be at the port for the SCSI cable.
For example, Sun's 375-0005 card is Single-ended and is what you already have inside your E450.
Sun's 375-0006 is a HVD card and would be correct for A1000 and D1000 arrays or L7 or L25 tape libraries.
Sun's 375-3057 card is LVD and would be appropriate for Sun's D2 array.
The manual for that 375-3057 card happens to have pictures of the SCSI icons I just mentioned.
See page 35 in that manual.
    http://192.18.109.11/816-2156-11/816-2156-11.pdf
Once you confirm what's needed by the tape peripheral, we may be able to suggest how to connect it properly.

  • Which Backup Hard Drive for Time Machine?

I ordered a new iMac from Apple. I need to order my backup hard drive and someone from here on the boards recommended http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/400+USB2/. I was going to get the 750 GB backup drive (I got the iMac with 640 GB), but I see there's a 1,000 GB backup drive that's basically the same price ($2 cheaper) but has half the cache (16 MB vs. 32 MB). I'm guessing that the cache stores information as it transfers from the main hard drive before the backup records it, so that the bigger the cache, the more it can store, and probably the faster the backup goes from the perspective of the main computer (i.e. the backup slows the computer less). Do you think that having twice the size of cache outweighs have 3/4 the size of hard drive? Would you go for the 750 GB with 32 MB cache, or the 1000 GB with 16 MG cache?

The only one I really care about is AOL 10.3.7. It allows me to store emails, as emails, in any folder on my hard drive. The newer versions of AOL, called AOL Desktop (which are still in beta as AOL ignored Macs for about 5 years), do not allow you to access files on the hard drive other than files within the application itself. So if I can't use AOL 10.3.7 I'll lose 15 years of email. Right now I forward all my email from the two colleges where I teach to AOL and used 10.3.7 to download them to my hard drive. That way when a student writes about an issue I can look back at her previous emails and see both what she and I said. (Or when some administrator promises something, I go back and read what he actually said at he time. :-D) I routinely look back at older email, especially for work. So it's very important that I be able to continue to access my older email files, and store new emails on my hard drive in my current file hierarchy. I mean Office and other applications allow you to store what you want where you want, so I don't see why email programs no longer do.
As for the rest, I do want to keep all my Safari and Firefox settings, but as I'm using the current versions, there's not problem with them. I'd prefer not to have to take the time to reinstall everything of course. As for Office, I am using 2004 for Mac, but I've ordered 2008 for the Mac with my iMac because Apple and Microsoft have a 50% off deal for back to school, which cuts about another $35 off the usual 40% educational discount that Microsoft offers. (Apple used to offer those big discounts too, back in the 1990s, when I got my G4, but these days they offer only $50 or $100 off as an educational discount, which is one reason I haven't bought a new computer in 9-10 years!) I have the latest Acrobat too, as Adobe also had a good educational discount.
A buddy of mine who does programming for the federal government said that it's a real testament to Apple's quality that my 10-year-old G4 still performs. He said that a PC would have died about half way through. I did get the top-of-the-line model thanks to both the educational discounts of the day and to the Apple student loan program (I was in my first Ph.D. program then), and expanded the RAM, so that 10 years later I'm still able to use the G4. I do all my teaching at two colleges online now, and the computer has gradually gotten slower as it encounters more and more information it was never designed to handle. Ten years ago every website didn't have fifty dancing babies or whatever. Now every website seem to have an embedded video or three all insisting on playing at the same time. I'm looking forward to that sort of thing not bringing my computer to a halt.
