Which DVD Burner is Apple Currently supplying?

I have a Pioneer DVR-112 and DVR-115 in my Mac Pro. I want new ones and I want the BEST Pioneer I can get. The 112 is slow and the 115 is VERY noisy and the constant speed surges are extremely loud and annoying and cause it to burn VERY slowly
I love the 112, it's reliable and quiet but it's old and slow. I hear the newer 118 has some issues so I don't want that one. Not sure when Pioneer will release a newer one which will hopefully be better.
Any recommendations? What is Apple currently shipping in new Mac Pro's?

Apple usually has 2-3 different suppliers for every part. With HDDs I know they have Hitachi, Samsung, and Fujitsu and that's just the MBP line.
So, there's really no way to tell. Especially since if they can work out a better deal with some other supplier, they will stop carrying one of the others.
Just stop worrying about it and go out and buy some random internal DVD burner at a retail store. There's nothing special about the drives in Mac Pros. They're you're bog standard 5.25" drives. Seriously. They even have the eject button on them, it's just hidden behind the flap, so you never see it unless you go looking. You aren't limited to whatever Apple is putting in systems. It's like car manufacturers that say only use their "genuine" brand motor oil. You go to any dealership for that car maker, I'd bet you a shiny nickel that they just buy Penzoil or something like that. Same stuff you'd get at your local auto parts store. Any mechanic will tell you that as long as you buy quality motor oil, it doesn't really matter if it's Brand X or Brand Y. They quite probably get their oil from the same refinery, so aside from the packaging on the container, there's n difference. Same goes for the optical drives in Mac Pros. Aside from a special label on the top with the Apple logo and SMART serial number, they're exactly the same as any drive you might find at Best Buy or one of those places.

I bought recently external LaCie DVD burner (USB). I experienced problem connecting it to iBook. It suppose to be possible to be powered up from USB but only possible way to power up burner only via external power supply. Is there is any possibility to adjust power in iBook so burner will work. I'v checked possibility to use it only powered form USB on MacBook of my friend - it works smooth only from single USB...

  • Which dvd ripper does apple use

looking to copy all my dvd to the apple tv was wondering , does anyone know which dvd ripper apple uses for the new movie rentals
    thanks for your time

Like the others have said - you want to definitely make sure you use the AppleTV preset.
Depending on how well versed you are you may want to spend some time on the handbrake forums. I wouldn't recommend posting there unless you know exactly what you're talking about as they don't suffer much for noobs.
I read a lot on there, it's tough to understand at first but well worth the knowledge to encode well.
AppleTV preset is pretty good. You can always revup your average bit rate from 2500 to 3000 if you like.
The only changes I make to my AppleTV preset is that I check Two Pass Encoding and do not check Turbo First Pass. It takes 5-6 hours for me to encode a movie so I run one while at work and one when I go to bed. But the quality is great with only minimal blocking in dark blue/black nighttime scenes otherwise it looks better than the DVD source due to solid encoding and upscaling on the AppleTV.

  • Which DVDs burn at 8x in a Dual 1.8 G5?

I have a G5 Dual 1.8 with the Pioneer 107D drive. I've had trouble finding DVD-Rs that burn at full 8x speed.
In the past I have tried:
    Memorex 8x DVD-R - burned at 4x
    TDK 8x DVD-R - burned at 8x
I've been using a spindle of the TDK 8x discs for the past year and they've worked great. But I ran out. So I went down to Fry's but there were hardly any 8x DVD-Rs, only 16x discs. Having had good luck with the TDK discs, I bought a spindle of 50 TDK 16x discs, but unfortunately they will only burn at 4x speed.
I am doing a year-end backup of about 100 GB of data (a digital image archive) and this is adding a significant amount of time.
Are there any firmware upgrades I can apply that will help? Any specific brands of DVDs to try? It burns at 4x using either the Finder or Toast 6 and I've upgraded Toast to 6.0.9.
Dual 1.8 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2 GB RAM, 20" Cinema Display (ADC)

    Hi Adam,
We have a different model G5 & SuperDrive (mine is the HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B (not pioneer)), but as far as burning at 8x goes we've been in the same boat. I tried different media as well TDK, TEON, ... Nothing would burn fast - this even though for many others TDK for instance seems a good brand.
Recently I picked up a set of Imation 8x DVD-R on sale. I didn't have any hopes that they would work at 8x (since they were cheap/on sale) but what do you know: I finally am able to burn at 8x with my superdrive.
So it may be trial and error. The firmware Apple uses for their "superdrives" is really picky and making them far less "super" then we all would want them to be.
See perhaps also this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=591009#591009 where quite a few different models & brands are discussed. Since you have Pioneer drive, the firmware is upgradable to newer versions released by Pioneer. That may help as well. (see linked discussion)

  • Which DVD Burn Software for Blu-ray from Folder

Per the recommendation in Steve Grisetti's PrE11 book, I would like to burn to a folder and then to DVD and/or BD-R.  However, based upon the Adware problems with downloading ImgBurn, it does not appear to be the way to go at this time.  I understand using Custom install on their "options", but it appears that even the most knowledgeable people sometimes get caught.
Therefore, what is the recommended software for burning DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs from a folder (for those that don't have old versions of ImgBurn).  I will purchase software if that is the best route.

    Ed
I do not endorse any particular program (up for purchase) for the task of taking video files to DVD-VIDEO, AVCHD format, or Blu-ray disc format on disc. Note that I wrote Nero or program like Nero. One of the app of the Nero program is the "Nero Burning Rom".  Use that in your google search. That is the app in a Nero version that you should need for your task. If interested in Nero for this feature, please check out the Nero web page for the versions that have the Burning Rom and the associated price after you have looked at the tryout. The following is a how to for Burning Rom feature
    http://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero2015/burningrom/NeroBurningRom_en-US.pdf
There are other programs on the market that can accomplish the task. Nero products have a long history of often competing with other programs for the burner, but I have not run into that issue using an OEM version that came with one of my computer burners. All the Burning Rom should be doing is taking your files already in the DVD-VIDEO or BDMV structure to disc, not creating those structures.
In spite of what you have read, I do not consider Premiere Elements burn to folder to be a "native" approach/route to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc. I see that only as a troubleshooting alternative when the user experiences unsolved Premiere Elements burn to disc issues. Have you run into problems with the Premiere Elements burn to disc - burner not recognized and/or media not present/other?
Looking forward to learning of further developments.

  • Which DVD burner for 2nd optical bay?

    Hi All,
I really want to expand and get a faster, preferably dual layer DVD superdrive for my MDD. Considering I'm a total klutz and I want to do it myself, what is the best one to go with (ie. easy to install, no software issues etc). Any advice?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mel

    Hi, Melmac!
Pioneer DVR-110 or DVR-111 and NEC ND3550A are favorites. Both are highly compatible with Tiger.
If you can put up with multiple rebates, you can't beat the price on this NEC. (I'm using the same one in my QS 2002 Mac.)
Here's a link to video install instructions. The process is quite simple. You could just add the new one and run two in the MDD, if you want...

  • Mac Pro DVD Burner

I am looking for a recommendation on which DVD Burner I should get to replace the one I got in my new Mac Pro. For some unknown reason I can't get a disc to burn that is viewable in my DVD player. My old G4 worked great!
I don't know if it is because I am using an older version of Toast (Toast 6.0) or if it is the DVD burner in my new computer. Any advice would be great as to next steps to resolve this issue.
    Thanks!!!

I would suggest that you try burning a DVD with iDVD before you spend a lot of time looking for alternative drives. It could well be Toast, as Toast 6 is indeed quite old (as software goes) and may not be compatible with your Intel-based Mac. If iDVD successfully burns a video DVD, then you will know it's a problem with Toast. If iDVD also fails (use DVD-R disks for best compatibility with standalone players), then Apple should replace the drive under warranty.

  • External DL DVD Burner Assignment Question

Hi, I have an external LaCie Dual Layer DVD burner and an internal (Sony) SuperDrive that is NOT a DL drive. Using the LaCie patch I can use the LaCie DL burner with iDVD, but I can't control which drive iDVD will choose on any given project. One time when I go to burn the project iDVD chooses the DL drive and sometimes it chooses the internal drive.
My question is, how can I assign iDVD to use a particular drive, and then if I can assign it to use the DL external drive, then will it let me burn a project that is over 2 hours? I question this because it still sees a single layer SuperDrive in the G5.
Can anyone provide me with some guidance please? Yes, I've already tried PatchBurn with no luck.
    Thanks in advance. --Jim

    Hi Jim,
My question is, how can I assign iDVD to use a particular drive, and then if I can assign it to use the DL external drive, then will it let me burn a project that is over 2 hours? I question this because it still sees a single layer SuperDrive in the G5.iDVD does not support selection of DVD burners, you cannot assign which DVD burner to use. In order to use your 'non-Apple' DL burner for DL project. You need a French Patch, there are several threads on this subject:

How do I export a 98 min video edited in FCP 7 to IDVD for single disc DVD burning?

Your current settings should match the source material in your timeline. Though, it probably doens't matter what it is as long as your settings are not for a highly compressed format like h.264 or mpeg2.
iDVD should take any all "I" frame format and encode it. (All I frame formats include DV, DVCProHD, ProRes).

    Apple doesn't support Blu-ray
    <http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/steve-jobs-calls-blu-ray-a-bag-of-hurt/>
    and (from hardmac.com):
"Steve did not change his mind and still think that BD DRM are just inacceptable for mass and consumer market due to restrictions that make advantages look like non competitive. He admitted that retrospectively he feels ashamed that Apple’s name is associated to Blu-ray, as he thinks that BD supporting associations look today more like M*fia than anything else. Concerning authoring on Blu-ray, it seems impossible to provide software supporting such format for consumer market. In addition to DRM, here it is the cost of licenses that slow down the entire process; one would have to start paying 3,000 USD to AACS, then 80,000 USD to Sony, 40,000 USD to Sonic, etc. HE considers the Blu-ray as a “bag of hurt”."
    (* = a  The full M word is rejected.)
    but there is player software
MCE includes a trial version of Blu-ray player software with their drive.  (It's out of date but will update to the current version.)

  • How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner?

How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner? Ot is not allow me to burn the DVDs genetrated in the Final Cut 7

I think you'll find that the application is Final Cut Pro...  the message is bug.  I get a similar message when disconnecting external drives after using them with FCP (even when the project is no longer loaded.)
As I mentioned above, the accepted workflow is to export the sequence to one of your hard drives using the Export>QuickTime Movie path with Settings:Current Settings and Make Movie Self-Contained checked like this:
This gets you a high quality "master copy" which you open in Compressor for transcoding. You should use the DVD: Best Quality setting for the duration of your movie.
this gets you the high quality MPEG-2 and AC-3 files for DVD Studio Pro authoring.
If you've never used DVD Studio Pro before, you can use iDVD instead. For iDVD, you just drag and drop your "master" on iDVD and it takes it from there. Both make a very professional product.
    hope this helps.

  • Apple do something about this DVD burning issue

    Hi ye all,
Some time ago, I encountered problems while burning DVD's.
Got this strange error message like many other folks were getting, and we were suspecting some kind of intergallactical conspiracy against Mac DVD writers.
Now guess what, if I now insert a blanc DVD into my iMac, it just spits it out without any error message or whatever. Even Microsoft could not beat this kind of user-friendliness
By the way, I'm running 10.4.7, with all updates recently published installed. My environment is dust-free, and there are no green creatures from Mars running around my living room.
I really need to be able to burn DVD's, so Apple : do something about it, or I'll switch to Windows, and I'm dead serious.
Anybody of you guys/gals have any suggestions as to what could be wrong with this DVD issue which has been going on for months now ?
    Regards,
    Dirk

As noted we are just other users helping each other. Instead of venting you are more likely to get an answer or pointed in a better direction by describing your particular problem.
Read your post to yourself and imagine you are another user that wants to help. You have provided no useful information about your situation. No iMac chip speed, no burner info, no error codes......
It is possible that your optical drive has seen better days and might need to be replaced.

Do you want to create a video DVD that will plan on a TV set via a DVD player or just burn the video files to a data DVD disk for storage?
If the former the read the following:
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
However, there are video DVD authoring apps that are available at the App Store that will create a video DVD disk.  They won't be as extensive as iDVD but can create a simple video DVD.
iDVD 7.1.2 is compatible with iDVD but we don't if it will be with the next system generation.
