Which Easy setup to use?

I just upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 and a new HDV video camera (Sony HDR-HC3) and have just reformatted and installed the Final Cut Studio suite and Shake. Now when entering the setup for FCP--what Easy Setup would be best? HDV 1080i (50,60, 24, 25)?
Thanks.

  • Which Easy Setup when using stills only?

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone knows which Easy Setup preset option I should choose if I'm not using video at all, but just jpeg images to create a movie. I'm outputting for DVD to show on a regular (4:3) television.
    Thanks,

Depending on your region: DV-NTSC or DV-PAL...

  • Easy Setup - Format used for importing MPEG-4 clip

I am trying to import a movie to FCE and wonder which format should be set in the Easy Setup. Thx
Used MPEG Streamclip to check the info:
    Video Tracks:
    Generic MPEG-4, 640 × 480, 29.97 fps, 997 kbps
    Audio Tracks:
MPEG Layer-3 Audio stereo, 48 kHz, 64 kbps
Used QuickTime Player Inspecter to check the info:
    DivX 6.0, 640x480, Unknown
    MPEG Layer3, Stereo, 48.000 kHz

You'd better first convert the movie (using MPEG Streamclip you already have) to the standard NTSC format: open your file in MPEG Streamclip, then Export to QuickTime (cmd-E - NOT Export to DV!) with Compression: Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC, Quality: 100%, fps: 29,97, Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
Then in FCE select the DV-NTSC Easy Setup before creating the sequence you'll use for editing.
Finally import the converted .mov file into FCE and drag it into the new sequence in the timeline.
That should do it, and the resulting .mov will not require video nor audio rendering.

  • Editing 16:9 mp4 files from .mod ....what easy setup to use?

Hi everybody....I am trying to get started on an edit of some 16:9 mp4 files that I created from .mod files using MPEG Streamclip. I can now import the files into FCP and chose DV NTSC Anamorphic as the easy setup, and am having two problems for starters:
    1. The canvas window is showing me the edit as a 4:3 letterbox
    2. When I try to render clips, I get the message: "Render Error: Insufficient Disk space. Free up space with render manager and retry?" ....but even if I try to gain space by using that manager there is nothing in the list to remove anyway.... and so I am unable to render clips.
    Any suggestions?

#1 - FCP doesn't edit mp4 files. That is not an editing codec. Convert to DV/NTSC using MPEG STREAMCLIP.
#2 - if you drop a clip into the timeline and have to render, that is a BIG CLUE that something is wrong. You should never have to render just a base clip if everything is setup right. That means converting the footage to DV/NTSC, and using the same settings in FCP.
#3 - Where is your media stored? And what type of SCRATCH DISK do you have? do no use your system drive to store footage or render to.

  • I'm in need of help deciding which power setup to use with new MBP

    Hello all,
So - after using an original 1.83 MBP for many years w/Aperture... I've recently acquired a new MBP!
and initially I had the power setup for better battery life... and often found myself wondering, "hmmm...considering this thing has way more juice under the hood - it sure doesn't run much quicker than the old one?!?!"
And then I realized - I had the lesser video chip running!
When I turned on the better performance - and then ran Aperture (likely my most demanding process) holy Crap! Does this thing Fly!!!
Now the problem; hence my question - is:
"is there a way to set it up so that while under battery power it runs on the better battery life option, yet when plugged in to endless power - it will run on better performance?" it would be much nicer - let alone make much more sense if this option was clear-cut & simple to select... or am I just missing it some where in the menus? Seems that you can only have one or the other, despite battery or plugin power. And to switch means logging out and the re-logging back in...?!?!?!
    Any thoughts?

"is there a way to set it up so that while under battery power it runs on the better battery life option, yet when plugged in to endless power - it will run on better performance?"
No, there isn't. You're right — it would be nicer if there were.
Seems that you can only have one or the other, despite battery or plugin power. And to switch means logging out and the re-logging back in...
    That's correct.

  • Easy Setup

    Hello,
I'm trying to figure out which easy setup format to choose. I initially had a dvd with vhs footage. Via Toast I converted it to an mpeg-4 format(640x480). 29.97 fps. In the drop down list I don't see mpeg as an option. I've been constantly rendering the clips. Fun!
    Thanks for your help

Hello, and welcome to the Apple Discussion forums.
You need to convert the DVD video to QuickTime using either +Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC+ or +Apple Intermediate Codec+ compression. I do not believe Toast can do that. And in any event MPEG4 is not the right kind of video to edit in FCE.
Most people in this forum use MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert DVD video for editing in FCE. (Note: you will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Component if you do not already have it on your Mac. $20, downloadable from the Apple Online Store.)
With footage that was originally VHS, you probably have standard 4:3 aspect ratio video (ie, not widescreen), in which case +QuickTime - Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC+ would be the proper conversion in MPEG Streamclip. In FCE you would use the +DV NTSC+ easy setup for this video.

  • Streamclip/easy setup settings for purchased clips

I have some purchased clips that I would like to edit in FCE. The settings from the QT inspector are:
    Format: photo JPEG, 1920 x 1080, millions
    FPS: 30
    Data Size: 321.4 MB
    Data Rate: 171.37 Mbit/s
    Current Size: 478 x 269 pixels
If I convert in streamclip to QT for editing in FCE, which compression should I used, and what other settings should I use?
Also, which easy setup in FCE would be correct?
I will eventually be exporting this to QT so that I can run the video through a mac to a projector.
    Bob

What version of FCE are you using?
Is there any other media, or just the stock footage?
Most likely you want to convert to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec at 1920x1080 at 29.97fps.

  • Easy Setup help

Hi there. I'm trying to capture old Hi8 movies into FCE and am having some trouble. I'm using a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV130 NTSC connected via Firewire. The device is daisy-chained through an external hard drive.
I'm not sure which Easy Setup preset will work best. When I use any setting with the Device Control Preset set to Firewire NTSC, Final Cut Express starts looking for timecode breaks on my tape and fails to capture each clip in its entirety (leaving off about 4-5 seconds from each).
However, when I use a setting with no Device Control Preset, my audio and video are captured out of sync.
I've tried capturing my footage via iMovie '09 and importing an XML file into FCE, but the quality doesn't look good, and the audio rendering time takes hours.
    Thank you for your help!

Thank you for replying. I hadn't thought of the audio being an issue, but I bet you're right. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to change the setting on my camera.
I'm planning on investing in an HD camcorder sometime soon, but until then, I guess I'll probably keep capturing using iMovie HD. Technology marches on....
    Thanks again!

  • Are Easy Setups with Custom Capture and Sequence Presets Portable?

    Hi,
I created some Custom Capture and Sequence Presets. Then I created some Easy Setups that use these presets.
Can I copy the Easy Setups to another machine or do I need to create or copy the Custom Presets in order for the Easy Setups to work?
If I need to copy or create the Custom Presets how can I copy them (which files do they live in)?
    Thanks!
    Mitch

    Jerry Hofmann wrote:
These files are located in HD/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Settings... so just drag the custom setups from there to a flash drive or CD and then place them in the other system's folder in the same path.

    Hi Jerry,
Thanks for the reply. The Easy Setups are in the directory you mentioned but the Custom Presets are not.
My question is are the custom presets used by the Easy Setup contained inside the Easy Setups? If not are there files I can copy or do I need to manually create them on the second Mac?
Since the other Mac is 50 miles away I have no easy way to test this. If there are files I can bring rather than redoing the custom presets that would be quite a bit easier.
    Thanks Again!

  • What's the best FCP6 easy setup for HD shot on Canon XHA1?

Hi, I'm sorry to ask such a novice question, but I want to make sure I'm starting correctly. Anyone have advice on the best easy setup to use for a project that will be predominantly footage shot in HD at 30P on the Canon XH-A1? It will also include a little bit of HD footage shot through a Canon 5D markii, but I think I understand how to bring those clips in later using log and transfer and the appropriate Canon EOS codec deal.
I'm just still not sure of the difference between HDV, DVCPRO HD, and all those other easy presets that are listed out...
    thanks much!
    -Sarah

I tried to search through other threads before posting my question, but I guess I didn't come across yours.
It was in response to your other question on the forums... So it was an answer directly to you.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2486111&tstart=0
As for your other question, that I also answered...use the camera if you want to shoot 30F or 24F, or shoot 60i and use the deck. Those are your choices. There is no deck that deals with Canon's F format...and they don't make decks. Silly stupid.

  • Which format to choose on Easy Setup?

Which one should I choose at Easy Setup?
Any video I try to work with, it says on a blue background "Unrendered" and I only hear the audio.
The only video I can work with properly is when I import videos from my camera to iMovie, then Export the XML and import that XML in Final Cut Express.
Otherwise, ANY video I import from my computer to the FCE or even any video I import from my computer to iMovie, then export to XML and import with XML in FCE, doesn't work...
What is the format I should work with on FCE? .avi files don't work, .mov files don't work.. nothing works..

The only video format FCE4 will work with natively is DV. HDV from TAPE based cameras together with AVCHD are converted into Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).
All other formats will need converting to either DV or Apple Intermediate Codec using something like MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/

  • Using HDV 720p24 Easy Setup - no device control

I am trying to capture from a tape shot on a JVC HD cam using the HDV 720p24 Easy Setup and am not able to achieve device control of the deck, which is a JVC BR-HD50.
    IS this possible?

The deck uses HDV Firewire as it's device control, so you need to change that. The easy setup uses something else... try that, and refer to this page: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php for more information about that deck and FCP...

  • 4:3/16:9 combo. What easy setup & export settings would you use?

Trying to export a sequence combing 4:3 and 16:9 clips, expecting to get a dvd that plays 16:9 at full screen and pillarboxed 4:3. Instead I get full screen 4:3 and letterboxed 16:9 on my flat screen tv. Shot the 4:3 on my pre-16:9 Sony VX1000, and the 16:9 on my Sony Z5U. Working on FCE 4.0 and authoring on iDVD.
Have tried different easy setups and compression types, but always check the 16:9 choice when it comes up in FCE or iDVD. What am I missing here?
    Thanks

For the future change your preset to the correct DV Anamorphic preset.
For this sequence I'm not sure. Try this. Set the correct DV Anamorphic preset and make a new sequence. Copy and paste the contents of the incorrect sequence and paste into the correct one. Select all the clips and use the Remove Attributes function. This should reset the anamorphic material into the correct aspect ratio. I'm not sure what it's going to do to the 4:3 media. Try it.
