Which EQ setting + volume level is the most 'clear'?

Hi
Just got an iPod Classic this week (my first ever Apple Product other than iTunes). It's replacing a 30G player from another company from 2006 (ran out of room) that had really good sound. With a simple pair of JVC Marshmallow earbuds, the right mid-volume and the right EQ setting, I could hear all the musical instruments clearly and somewhat equally and the singer's voice was clear as well, as if we were in the same room.
I'd like to recreate this with my iPod Classic but I've noticed the EQ isn't customizable (unless I'm missing something) and that with some of the iPod's EQ settings I can hear instruments clearly but the vocals sound muffled, almost like they're dubbed from another source. But there's other settings (Vocal) where the singer comes in clear but the instruments are muffled in that dubbed way. I've tried Flat and Off but results with those vary.
My old player's EQ was set at a reverse of the iPod's Rock setting, lowest bars on the outside and highest in the middle. Is it possible to load an EQ setting like that from iTunes? If you can download a game, can you download an EQ setting?
AND is there a certain volume level where that 'same room' clarity shines through? Anything lower than 11 out of 20 on my old player and it would lose that clarity (anything higher than 13/20 was too loud). 12 was just right. If that makes any sense.
Or could it have something to do with how a song is ripped from a CD? Which is what my music collection started out as.
I'm hoping someone can help and shed some light on this for me. I got it engraved so I can't exactly return it. haha

Most audiophiles, switch off the iPod Classic EQ as it is crap, most probably designed by some team who like bubble-gum music. but if you must use, create a custom EQ presets

But try not to boost up greater than zero db, the new iPod audio chipset don't like it, your music will sound like something from some Oriental Opera, of course, unless you like the metallic tin highs.

  • Safe Volume Levels wih the Zen Vision

I'm just wondering what is a safe volume level with the ZVM? I find the best sound comes from level 5-8 with in-ear buds. I'm currently using Super.fi 3 Studio at 5 and Sony MDR EX7SLA at 8.
But what is safe? What is the sound presure level at level 5?
I read one place that that said level 7 is around 80dB, which sounds REALLY low to me when I tried it, but apparrently it can be damaging to the ears according elsewere, though I find it hard to belei've that. Becuase at level 7 you can't even hear all aspects of the music fully.

Creative Zen Vision M quiet sound on EU models:
"If you bought a Creative Zen Vision M in the EU then its likely you have a sound limiter on it. This means that the sound of your player is relati'vely low and as such you could be having to use levels of 20/25 or so to get a good volume."
    http://sp303.com/2006/03/creative-zen-vision-m-quiet-sound-on.html
    additional interesting read:
"The lower the resolution, the smaller the resulting file ? and the more detail lost. Music with little detail tends to sound muddy. Most of us intuiti'vely turn up such music in an effort to hear the missing details, and expose our ears to dangerously high volume levels in the process. "
"Generally, a lossless file is about ten times bigger than a 28 kbps low-resolution MP3 file of the same song. This means you can fit fewer lossless files on your player than low-res MP3, but there's a plus: you'll have significantly better-sounding music that can pack a greater punch at a lower ? and safer ? volume level."

  • C How to Set Isolation Level in the Connection String

How to Set Isolation Level in the Connection String using the "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 Version 4.0"?
We are trying to move from Crystal Reporting that run against a IBM DB2 database on a mainfram to SSRS reporting and we have downloaded the "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 Version 4.0" and then worked with the DB2 Administrator to create the
Packages.  We only have access to use the "Read Uncommitted ("MSUR001") package.   We were able to connect and pull data before he removed access to the other packages, but after setting access the Connection keeps trying to use
the 'Cursor Stability (MSCS001)" package.   How do we change the Default to the "Read Uncommitted ("MSUR001") package???   Since it is keeps defaulting to the the other package
we can't connect to do it in the T-SQL query, it has to be set at the Connection String level.

    Hi Dannyboy1263,
According to your description, you want to set the Transaction Isolation Level in Connection String. Right?
In Reporting Services, the Connection String for OLE DB Connection can only contains Provider, Data Source and Initial Catalog. There's no property for setting Transaction Isolation Level in the Connection String. Based on my knowledge, we can
only set the Transaction Isolation Level at Query level or set it by using code (C#, VB, Java...) to call the property of Connection. So unfortunately your requirement can't be achieved currently.

  • Volume Levels through the Vision Box

    Hi,
Has anyone noticed a reduced volume level when watching tv through the Vision Box ?
It's fine when I connect the tv directly through the aerial, but as soon as I try to watch via the box, I find that I need to increase the volume level on the tv to such an extent that I can hear the amplifier humming during quiet passages.
    Any ideas ?

Agreed it is a pain but we are stuck with it for now.

    Hi Camelot,
How would you assess the effect on "overhead"?
This may have nothing to do with it, but I was curious as to the effect on speed of the script, so I ran the two scripts below. On my old souped-up 7500 (900MHz), the first script, with the "say" command outside the tell block, yielded an average of 111.7 ticks; the average for the second script was 110.1 ticks. So the difference appears to be about 1/30th of a second, insignificant for a one-time event (but maybe not if the routine is repeated numerous times).
(By way of comparison, my 2.7 GHz machine averaged about 80 ticks on both scripts. That's about half a second faster, and is noticeable.)
    Script 1
    set t1_ to the ticks
    repeat 20 times
    tell application "Finder"
    open file "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:SEM Hazards.rtf:"
    open folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
    end tell
    say "Now close!" using "Fred"
    tell application "Finder"
    close folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
close window 1 of application "TextEdit"
    end tell
    end repeat
    set t2_ to the ticks
    set AvgScriptDuration to (t2_ - t1_) / 20 & " ticks" as text
    Script 2
    set t1_ to the ticks
    repeat 20 times
    tell application "Finder"
    open file "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:SEM Hazards.rtf:"
    open folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
    say "Now close!" using "Fred"
    close folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
close window 1 of application "TextEdit"
    end tell
    end repeat
    set t2_ to the ticks
    set AverageScriptDuration to (t2_ - t1_) / 20 & " ticks" as text
(Finally, deviations from the mean ran as high as 4 ticks on the slow machine, and occassionally as high as 2 ticks on the faster machine -- for what that's worth!)

I know on windows, you can set the volume for programs in the background, how do I do something similar to this on my mac?

    No, unfortunately.
There is no  Volume Mixer / Windows  like utility available in OS X.
Google it. I do not use any third party utility.
    Best.

  • Setting volume levels in a single track

How do I change the playback level of several seconds of a single track?

Good to hear that you were able to sort it out. It sounds as though you were really pushing up against the limits of the disk, so the window of opportunity for the break point would have been very narrow. If you want to experiment with the 8.5gb version again I would suggest guesstimating approximately where the middle of the project is and then scattering chapter markers in that general area. You should come up with one that is in the right place to make it work.

    List,
I was very happy to know the news from AskTom site that Mr. Jonathan Lewis has written a book on most awaited topic, i.e. Cost Based Oracle - Volumne 1. I used the terms most awaited, because, I haven't found any book on this topic, may be few technical papers, but, a complete book dedicating to this topic is new, at least in my view. What you more expect when an Oracle Expert write this books, who provides with in-detailed information and not to forget with proven tests.
The book might be available in the book stall from November month onwards. Following is the linke and book index, if someone interested, please read it.

A couple of years back I had a developer bring me a poorly running query that came from a vendor package. I looked at it, asked a bunch of dumb questions, and then rewote it to drive differently. It ran great. Then I told the developer that since it was a canned package I didn't know what good my version was going to do him.
A week later the developer came back and told me that the vendor had put my version of the query into their product. Considering that most of their installations are on SQL Server while we run on Oracle I found that amazing.
Sometimes the unexpected happens and it is not a bad thing. But I do not recommend waging money on a vendor accepting a performance improvement suggestion. Most of them act like your shop is the only one having performance issues with their product.

  • Setting default volume level for Java Desktop

    Hello,
I am running Sol 10 11/06 for sparc. How do I permanently set the default volume level for the Java desktop? If I change the volume manually and "save settings" on logoff, the saved setting is not saved after a reboot, after which I have to set it again.
    Thank you......

    Annoying, isn't it?
Unfortunately the only thing you can do is lower your system volume before opening those pages. The volume could be controlled by the Web page author but most are clueless.

  • Setting default volume level.

I have a 2nd Gen Nano which I am using in my car. I have an OEM adapter which connects to the iPod through the dock adapter and allows the car's stereo controls to operate the iPod. (The stereo thinks it's a really big CD changer.)
My problem is that the sound level from the iPod is significantly lower than that from either the radio or the actual CD changer, so when I have finished listening to the iPod I have to be careful and remember to crank the volume way down or else the radio blasts when I select a different source.
Looking at the iPod I have made sure that the volume limit is set to maximum, and I am confident that I don't have a EU crippled unit since the sound level through the earbuds is plenty loud even at half volume and keeps going up from there.
The thing is that when it first wakes up the volume level is always set to 50% on the slider. I cannot manually change the volume level when connected to the car because when it's connected to the adapter the iPod's controls don't work (besides it is mounted in a fairly inaccessible location), but I don't even know if doing so would help since it communicates with the stereo through the dock connector.
My question is: Does the iPod's volume control have any effect on the signal level out through the dock connector, and if so is there a way to permanently adjust the default volume level the unit uses when it starts up? What I'd like to do is set the default volume level on the iPod to, say, 75% or whatever will balance it with the other source input levels that the car stereo uses. I tried adjusting the volume manually and then sliding the lock switch to 'Lock' but it didn't work.
    Thanks in advance.

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
    So, any other suggestions?
