Which external hard drive snow leopard

Which BRAND of pocket 1,5-2TB hard drive should I buy that  I can partition down to have one 80GB clone of my Macintosh HD? Apparently NOT Toshiba...

Thanks Dirk,
Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

  • External hard drive Snow Leopard and Lion compatibility?

I am going to install Snow Leopard on my Mac (so I can then purchase Lion and install THAT into my Mac) but it only has 975 mb of memory left. So, I've decided that I need to purchase an external hard drive so that I can transfer some videos, songs, etc. to create more space on my Mac. My question is, what external hard drive will be compatible with Snow Leopard and Lion? I was going to purchase a Western Digital external but I've heard many problems of it being incompatible with Lion. What's a reliable and compatible brand that I could purchase? I'm looking for an external hard drive that hold at least 500 gb.

I think your analysis is kind of harsh, kurt.
    'garbage'? really?
Sure, some familiar paradigms have changed, and change brings pain - or at least, unfamiliarity - but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad.
Of all the changes you mention three things that you consider abominations...
UI changes more in line with iOS. Sure, and this is bad because...?
It's clear that Apple see the iOS as the future, and it makes sense to unify the experience - at least where it makes sense. You don't actually mention which elements you consider bad, BTW.
The scrolling seems to be the one most often cited, but to me it makes way more sense to manipulate the document directly, rather than manipulate a scroll bar that works inversely. I'm not sure what other UI elements you're concerned about.
As for the Save As... issue, the change to Duplicate makes a lot of sense when you understand the concept of automatic file saving and versioning. There's never a need to 'save as' in order to create a point-in-time backup since you automatically get point-in-time backups just by using the OS. The only reason it makes sense to to force a branch and for that, 'duplicate' makes sense. If it bothers you, just read 'duplicate' as 'save as'.
The big break here is that versioning requires application support - the developer needs to add it to their app code - and that creates inconsistencies in the short term because not all apps support versioning. That will fix in time as developers release updates to their apps.
As for bugs, the current release is 10.7.2, so that's two revisions past the original. Any major release (of any applications, not just an OS) is going to have some number of issues and some people avoid any .0 release just for that reason. I think the concensus is that by the time you get to .2 most of the issues have been resolved. Can you point to any bug in 10.7.2 that directly affects you and your use of the OS? or are you basing your statements on outdated material?
In short, every major OS release, from every OS vendor has some number of changes that confuse and upset users, and some number of short-term pain while application developers and users get up to speed. Lion is no different in that respect, and if you look back in history you'll see the exact same sentiment for Snow Leopard's release, and Leopard's, and Tiger's, and..., and..., and...
To call it garbage, though? I think not.

  • My new 24in imac doesn't recognize my usb external hard drive- snow leopard

i was attempting to do a new time machine back up on my new mac but it won't recognize the usb external hard drive (kaser 250gb). i used it frequently on my old g5 imac, no problems. i plugged the hard drive into my g4 ibook and it recognized it right away. i followed the apple tip of pulling the power plug out of the wall power socket and pulled all the usb cables out as well (i have the wireless keyboard). i let it rest for over 5 minutes and only plugged in my wacom stylus and usb external hard drive. still nothing. and it doesn't show either in disk utility. i also downloaded as per another thread the 3g ntfs system preference but to no avail. the only thing i can of doing is erase and reformat my external on my ibook, but i don't want to risk loosing the data without a back up.
anything else i can try? (before i buy time capsule) thanks

i just checked again by plugging the external into my ibook g4 and checked how it was formatted - mac os extended (journaled).
Then the 3GFS software is not required at all.
i have an idea, not sure if it will work and it will have to wait a couple days until i get my firewire back from a friend, but this is what i'm thinking: my intel imac has a 1tb hard drive. could i use target mode between my imac and ibook? with my ibook i'd attach the external hard drive, then using the firewire and target mode start it up. hoping that the ibook hard drive and the attached external hard drive would show on my intel mac for which i could copy over the external back ups onto my imac. once completed, i could erase and reformat the external on my ibook and then try again on my imac to see if it appears on my desktop. do you think this might work (even though it is correctly formatted already?)
I use Target mode on a regular basis for mounting the internal drive on a Mac to transfer or salvage data. I don't know if you will be able to connect to an external drive on the Target computer. There's not usually any reason for this and I don't know if the Target Mode will enable the Logic board to deal with the USB ports and transfer data. I kinda doubt it, but other more experienced users can jump in here.
I don't think the problem with your external drive is the format, since you've already checked it and it is already formatted for a Mac. Intel Mac's will mount drives formatted by a PPC Mac with no problems, unless your OS doesn't support the chipset in the USB case that connects to the drive. There are some USB drives that are known to not work well with SL but worked fine with Leopard.
You can buy a cheap USB case (about $30) and move the drive from the old case to the new case, or buy a USB to IDE adaptor cable (about $20), or you can buy a larger external drive that will work on the iMac and use the G4 to transfer the date from the old drive to a new one. Or you can take both drives to a friend with a Mac and use Disk Utility to restore the USB drive to a partition on the Firewire drive. That doesn't fix the USB drive to work with your new Mac, but unless the vendor comes out with a firmware fix, I think that's a lost cause anyway.
other than the above, i may just go buy a 1tb time capsule,
I would not be getting a Time Capsule to back up a single computer. Wireless backups are a lot slower than FireWire or USB (of course, it's the initial backup that takes so much time). If you do have several Mac's that need a TM backup volume, then the Capsule can help you out. It is supported by Apple (and there are a lot of users here in the forums). I'm using a ReadyNAS device for network backups, but it is not supported by Apple, and I have to rely on NetGear for fixes if an OS update breaks my backup system.
BTW, it's a good chance that a TC device will be able to see and mount your USB drive. The incompatible chipset problem with some drives seems to be limited to the USB drivers in SL which the TC is not running. That's why I said that a USB hub may also let you see your drive, the problem is there's no guarantee's...

  • HT201250 which external hard drive should I choose/use as I am setting up Time Machine on my MacBook Pro 15 for the very first time?

Which external hard drive should I use/choose as I am setting up Time Machine on my MacBook Pro 15 for the very first time?

Any of these SATA HDDs that are at least the same size as your internal HDD (preferably larger capacity).  In addition you will need an enclosure, preferably one with a Firewire as well as a USB connection.

  • Which external hard drive should I use to save my iTunes library?

    Hi,
So I have collected so much music and movies in iTunes that my internal HD is practically full.  (Library is over 500GB of 1TB and the rest is taken up with my apps and programs.)  It's time to purchase an external hard drive to transfer my library to.  Furthermore, I currently have a 2TB WD My Book for Mac that I am currently using for backup.  The My Book is also full and Time Machine is deleting the oldest backups to make room for the current ones.
Here is where I need everyones advice.  I am planning on purchasing a 3TB WD My Book for Mac.  I am planning on purchasing more movies for iTunes.  Which external hard drive should I use for what?  Option A or B
Option A:  Put my iTunes library on the 2TB external hard drive and use the 3TB for backup
Option B:  Put my iTunes library on the 3TB external hard drive and continue to use the 2TB for backup
Also please give me your reasoning.
    Thanks everyone for your responses!

    Limnos,
So, let's go one step further with this.  I read your reply to moving iTunes library to an external hard drive: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4594518?tstart=0  However, if I move the iTunes library, will this include all the movies and apps that I have purchased?
    Thanks!!!!

  • Which external hard drive do i need to transfer my files from my G4 with OS 10.3 to my new iMac?

I have a Mac G4 PowerPC (with: processor speed of 1GHz, 1 MB L3 cache) running OS 10.3.9.  I want to transfer my files from the G4 to my iMac (.21.5/2.5QC/2X2GB/500GB/6750M) which is still in the box, for the last 3 years.  I believe it is running OS Mountain Lion.  All the Mac-compatible external Hard drives i have looked at are for OS 10.5 or 10.7 and above. Are there any external hard drives for sale that will work with my OS 10.3.9 to transfer files to my iMac? If not, how can i do this transfer of files?

An external hard disk drive enclosure with FireWire400/800 ports, with others
may be able to be used; but not as an adapter from one kind of port to another.
The old iMac uses USB, perhaps as slow as 1.1; that won't work with newer
USB3.0; but both the newer and older computers could use FireWire; or maybe
    ethernet for computer to computer.
Newest models have Thunderbolt data ports, so adapter cables are needed.
And then you'll need cables to match whatever combination you end up with.
{You may have tried something or another, but not posted back to say if you did.
    And this thread is nearly two weeks old, now. I just happened to find it here.}
For what you suggest, you may be able to find a suitable cable, perhaps FireWire
or Ethernet, depending on the ports available and cables still applicable to both.
Does newer iMac have FireWire ports? You could buy a FW400 to FW800 cable where
the ends are different, if the newer machine has FireWire800. [The old one has FW400.]
This would have to be equipped with the protruding connectors so each could make
the connection between each computer's built-in ports. Not all cable sets do this.
This would be the fastest way to copy content between machines, if FW 800 in newer mac.
Port-powered external hard drives may be under-powered and fail to work, so that is why
I suggest  enclosed HDD with its own AC power adapter that will not rely on FW or USB
for the power to run the drive and the electronics inside the enclosure.
example of external enclosures with multiple ports and its own power adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
This is an image of the lesser model series with fewer ports. The FW800 and USB3.0
are both backward compatible to their older counterparts, FW400 & USB2.0. But even
so the old 1GHz iMac G4 with USB1.1, would not be able to use newer USB3.0; yet
should be able to connect via FireWire400 to FireWire800 by special cable.
If the iMac G4 is still working, that's a plus. Attempting to remove the old IDE/ATA HDD
and access it outside the PowerPC iMacG4, is really a troublesome effort, one to avoid.
But the PPC iMacG4 can be started in Target Disk Mode and accessed as a hard drive
via FireWire cable, too. Then files can be seen as though the old Mac is an external HD.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • A mackbook, a pc laptop, and... which external hard drive???

I have two laptops; one is a Mac and the other a PC. My wife and I have a good collection of music together, but each of us has our own iPods and playlists. Therefore, with my modest knowledge I thought it would be a good idea to have an external shared drive where we could store all our files and access them from either or both laptops. The idea is to use that external hard drive wirelessly as you would use an internal one, in each of the laptops.
My question is, is this possible? If so, which one would you recommend?
We are looking into buying something with 500GB. I was especially interested in a Western Digital, but I have read so many bad reviews, and - as you could probably tell by now - I am not enlightened with computer knowledge. I have also recently read some review of a LaCie2 500GB and it is winning my vote. The thing is that I do not want to buy something that is not going to work the way I want it to with both computers simultaneously... any ideas?
    I appreciate all the help!

Ok. So what i have done is installed Itunes on my laptops C drive. I then go to 'options' and 'add folder' where i select my music folder that is then stored on my external hard drive. It then takes say, half an hour to copy across the titles of the music. I can play them fine at this point. Now what? Can I turn the laptop off and it'll be fine? Is what I have done so far ok?

  • Which external hard drive is best for the MacBook Pro? Can I use the SuperDrive?

I am looking to buy a new external hard drive for my new MacBook Pro and just want the best one for this laptop. Can i use the SuperDrive?  It looks like the SuperDrive is for the MacBook Air but wasn't sure if it could be used with the Pro as well.

Apple does not make external harddrives, except maybe the TimeCapsule which is Router/HD combo for use with the TimeMachine software.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/storage
There are many to choose from, and you will I sure get much advise across the board.
I would stay away from WesternDigital.
Othere then that OWC are a dependable supplier.
I am using a 1TB/QuadInterface/DiskGo/ by Edge  they had a very sweet back to school discount promo.
Look around for your "sleek and thin in design" and a good deal as they all go on sale periodicly.
Think along the lines of USB 3, Thunderbolt if your machine supports it or at a minimum FireWire800.

  • Which External Hard Drive Should I buy?

What brand of external hard drives for the macbook do you guys recommend? Where should I buy it from?
I will be using it to boot from, so I want something fast. As for size, 250+ GB is plenty. I am more interested in how fast I can run OS X on it.
    Thanks,
    KANE

Depending on what interface you want, you have a variety of choices from Other World Computing. I bought one of the basic OWC Neptune FW400 drives mainly for backup, but it is also bootable on my older machine. The newer Intel machines can boot via USB 2, so that might be a good faster option for your MacBook, but they have some OWC Mercury drives that offer multiple interface options, so you have the flexibility of FW400/800 USB2/1.

Get two of them, so you can make a regularly scheduled backup, using DejaVu, Retrospect, or CarbonCopyCloner, etc...

  • Which external hard drive can I use with my Macbook (2009)?

I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive for my 2009 Macbook os x 10.6.8 (the heavier, white laptop). It looks like most hard drives are compatible for Macbook Pro and newer.

If your MB is an early model 2009 you can use either Firewire or USB 2 drives, late model 2009's don't have firewire so you're limited to USB.  I'd stay away from WD and Seagate externals, their enclosures aren't very reliable. The Toshiba Canvio drives work well. Pretty much any drive from OWC is top shelf http://eshop.macsales.com

  • Boot MacBook hard drive(Snow Leopard) via USB on MacBook Pro(Leopard)

Recently my old MacBook's (2.0 Core Duo) logic board failed. It was running Snow Leopard and is either on 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 (not sure when I last updated). I would like to remove the 500GB hard drive and use a SATA to USB connector to connect the hard drive to my work MacBook Pro (2.2 Core 2 Duo) running 10.5.8 and use the work laptop to boot the failed MacBook's drive. Before I try this setup, I was hoping to find out if this will work at all or if it could potentially mess up my work computer.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You want to boot your MBP with the MB's HD? Won't hurt to try, but it might not work. Trying won't muck up the MBP. Alternatively, if you're trying to recover stuff from it, you don't have to boot with it, just mount it and transfer stuff, assuming the username & password combo matches. Otherwise, use the Migration Assistant to do the transfer.

As long as you don't use the ExFat or Mac OS X encrypted formats, yes.

  • Which external Hard Drive?

    Hello,
Am wanting to back up my iBook with a separate Hard Drive, in the main for safety reasons. Most of the ones I've seen on the market hold either 2 or 3GB of memory or 200GB+. I mostly use my Mac for iTunes and Photos, and would only need about 50GB maximum.
I travel a lot, so size is of importance, but I only really intend to have it 'just in case'. Also, I am in the UK, and so am looking for hard drives available here and in pounds!
Any recommendations/suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Zachary,
I have recently gone down this route and settled on LaCie's Porche portable USB/Firewire drive. I went for the 80 GB for £109, but they do a 60 GB too for £89. They are very small (about the size of a 50g packet of tobacco but thinner) and light, and come with a 'velvet' pouch. Silverkeeper back up SW is included, and 2 year warrantee. The bad news, LaCie's website is showing them as out of stock at the moment but Amazon, Dabs etc may do them.
Always go for the largest (in terms of GBs) that you can afford, you'd be surprised how quickly you can fill it up. Also, get a firewire drive. You can't boot your iBook from a USB drive.
I have split mine into 3 partitions, a 30 GB clone of the iBook, a 10 GB 'bare bones' installation of Tiger with the remaining <40 GB for miscellaneous backups like movies, downloaded .dmgs etc that aren't needed on the iBook.
    Have fun,
    Adrian

  • Which external hard drive and ? size

We are a family that have just converted to the imac and want to use the time machine to back up (I have a click free system for my laptop but like the idea of using the history function).
From my little knowledge it seems connecting with a firewire 800 is the fastest. We would be backing up photos, itunes and documents that we create we have a 500gb hardrive but we won't have used much of it as yet. We want a drive that is fairly portable so that we can disconnect it easily and store in another location wifi is not important.
    We are in the UK
    Any suggestions please

I don't have any personal experience with Seagate external drives so I cannot comment without any real authority. I know they make very good internal drives so it really comes down to the quality of their enclosures.
BTW another (and popular) strategy is using redundant backups. The most popular is to use TM for incremental backups however the problem with TM is isn't bootable so if your internal drive fails you are down until it can be replaced. If that isn't a problem then TM is an excellent stand alone solution. However if you want a bootable back up you can use an application like SuperDuper (SD) or Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) which creates a bootable backup of your entire drive. Many people (myself included) use both TM and a bootable backup. I rely on TM if I need to restore a file however in the event my internal drive crashes I can also rely on my SD backup (on a second external HD) for backup to boot and run from. This is a more expensive solution because you have to buy 2 external HD's however it does provide additional peace of mind. I would recommend reading this article from Macworld that discusses backup solutions, at a minimum definitely use TM!
