Which external hardrive?

Well, it seems that I've got one of the 1st gen. iMacs with the faulty capacitors or video ram problem and I'm going to go get an external hardrive to back my stuff up before the machine gets shipped off for repairs...I've read that people have had problems with LaCie compatibility...any recomendations for a good (cheap) external hardrive?
Thanks again, D.

I imagine that it's OK. However, check with one of LaCie's technicians. I have writen e-mails to them, and always gotten answers to my questions.
I bought my iMac in December last year, and so far I haven't had any problems with it. I turn it off every night, and have set it to start at 7:00 AM each day. However, every week, or at least every other week I let OnyX repair Permissions, as well as the Daily through Monthly Schedules, and avery one of the options on the list.
I also run Onyx before and after software installation, folllowed by a restart. Maybe I do this too often, but so far my iMac has been running great.
The LaCie drive I have (FireWire 400, 800, and USB)energizes and mounts (shows on the screen) whenever I start the computer. However, I only plug the cable to the back of the iMac (as well as the power cord), only when I need to use the hard drive. Otherwise it's off (disconnected from the iMac and turned off).
Keep in mind that whenever you want to turn off or disconnect the drive, you should dismount it first. All you have to do is to drag the drive's icon (or icons) to the trash to dismount it. The icons will automatically show on the screen the next time you connect the drive to your computer.

  • My Seagate external hardrive comes up with error 5016

I am not sure if my IMac OSX has a virus, but my external hardrive, which is a Seagate is not working and comes up with "error code 5016"

    Not likely a virus btw.

  • External hardrive not workon on MacBook Pro

I own a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex that is 1TB and have had it for about 3 or 4 years. I used to be able to plug it in and with ease insert files (pictures, music, documents, etc .. basically everything in case my MacBook stops functioning.)
Back in May, I took my external hardrive to my University before I graduated and I could not insert some video files (using another computer, which was a Mac.) Our school's tech expert said it was because my external hardrive is not applicable with Macs. Long story short, I showed him I can do it on my MacBook Pro, then I had to save my video files on a flash drive instead. Anyway.
I want to back up everything incase the MacBook stops working soon (it's six years old.) However, when I put in my external hardrive, I can't change the name of files/folders in the external hardrive nor can I insert anything into the hardrive. Oddly enough, I can drag stuff into my desktop and it will copy a file into my desktop while the same file still stays on my hardrive.
My MacBook Pro is Version 10.9.5 (if it matters) and I have more than 90 GB of free space on my MacBook and have nearly 700 GB of free space on my external hardrive and obviously I'd like to use that. Also, I'd like to use my external hardrive not just on Macs, but all machines in case I need to save large files. I used to be able to do this at one point, especially with a previously owned hardrive (it was Western Digital.)
Anyway, that's all the info. All help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Itunes won't copy over some of my podcasts and purchases since I have moved it to an external hardrive

So I Have moved over all my purchases and everything to an external hardrive. I did everything right and my itunes story works perfectly fine. However one of my podcasts (yugioh the abridged series) won't copy over along to the ipod saying its file type is not supported by the ipod. It only does this with the first 8 episodes (if you find it you will see them) one of which (the bbt movie) worked perfectly fine on my ipod before but now for some reason it won't. It also won't work on a few of the tv shows that are in hd and one music album that had american boy in it. I'm wondering what I can do to solve this problem. My itunes and my computer (windows vista operating system) is up to date and I have an ipod classic with plenty of room what should I do.

This doesn't work. The iOS4 upgrade has wiped out synchronization to Outlook to the phone and back. There are many threads on this here, and Apple has yet to address this issue.

How do I fix it? I run my Itnues from this external and now my library is gone. Luckily I have it saved somewhere else, which is not a problem, but I won't be able to write to this HD for right now. I can't see an option to give those permission back.

Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

  • Can I install boot camp on my computer, but install all my PC games for it on an external hardrive?

I have a new Mac, but I want to install boot camp on it. However, I would only really be using it for gaming.
On another post, someone said that you could not install boot camp entirely onto an external hardrive. As boot camp would only be for gaming, then could I install all my games (when I'm given the option to chose the file of where to install) onto an external drive which is correctly formatted? (what is the format too?)
    Thank you

Thunderbolt storage is a great idea. OS X can run off one and yes you can create an NTFS drive or partition.
One person I thought said Tb was possible but may have taken a system image restore to get there, only one, and not 'documented' to say how to.

    Thank you

you will be fine and either are more than enough for even an SSD.
    NTFS of course.
Might look thru Google to see if anyone has managed to boot Windows from Thunderbolt, I think someone managed after install and then made a restore image and placed on Tb storage device.

  • My mac won't recognize my external hardrive!!

I have a Maxtor One Touch II 300GB external hardrive with all of my pics and backups, and ever since I installed Leopard it won't recognize the drive. I've read other forums and know it's because it's password protected and Seagate or Apple has come up with a solution yet. So I did the only other thing I could...re-install Tiger with my backup disc which was 10.4.7 for my Mac mini Intel. Now it still won't recognize the drive! The software doesn't automatically startup and even after starting it manually it doesn't recognize. I'm guessing because when I re-installed Tiger and it asked me to archive the newer version it must have kept the same coding or whatever. I don't know much about coding so I'm lost there. I have my Powerbook G4 with Leopard on it, but of course it won't recognize that drive on there either. Right now I have a few options I could re-install Tiger on my powerbook and erase everything, but I can't find the install disk and I'm not sure the install disk from the Mac-mini will work because it's for the Intel processor hopefully that won't matter. Another option is to try and see if my wife's HP with Vista will recognize it, but the drive is formatted for Mac so I'm not sure if it'll work and ask for a password. I'm stuck at frustrated right now...if I could just get a computer to recognize it, take the password off... I would shell out the money to get a new drive recognizable by Leopard and transfer the data over. I DO NOT WANT TO ERASE THIS DRIVE!! I know it still works, but I can't access it.  Anyone got any ideas?

  • 1 library, 1 external hardrive, 2 macs using it.

Hello out there, Ive got my entire itunes library on my external 500gb hardrive. I would like to use both my imac g5 power pc and my macbook pro to use and share this one external hardrive so that I don't have to duplicate anything. my g5 is running itunes 7 and my macbook pro is running itunes 8. I don't wanna upgrade to either if I don't have to.

I would prefer to use it one at a time on which ever computer I am running. I constantly connect and reconnect it to either computer. Still, to answer my question, A) Do I still have to run the same Itunes version? and B) How do I get the song list to read on the second mac. Simply going to preferences/advanced and setting the itunes music folder location isn't working.

  • HT1178 Time Capsule used as External Hardrive Backup

If I want to use a Time Capsule as an external hardrive backup for my MacBook Pro, how do I do it?
What cords do I need and can I get it to back up wirelessly?  I don't want my own wireless from it,
because we already have it in the house - I just want my own storage unit and I have one, but no
cords to go with it.  Need to get cords - which ones?

This is out of my area of expertise, but I believe you can set the Time Capsule up so it doesn't generate a network, but is on the existing network.
Then you can back up to it wirelessly.
You should still do the first backup via an Ethernet cable if at all possible, as it will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI, but then backups can be done without having to connect the cable.

  • Drag and Drop Files Onto Seagate External Hardrive

I can't seem to just drag and drop files I want to store on an external hardrive with Seagate. I hate that. I just want a simple drag and drop so I can free up some space on my computer. But Seagate just seems to just seems to say **** you, we're gonna do it backwards ***. Can someone please explain how to just drag and drop files? I have zero idea, and they don't make it simple to understand.
So for the love of god....please explain it to me (without use of computer terminology or telling me places I should go on my computer that I don't know what the **** they are. Renders your help useless, and it's frustrating because no matter how many times I ask this, you just give me help i can't understand anyway.)
    Please....it's not hard to ask.
If possible, use step by step instructions, if you need to tell me to go somewhere on my computer, tell me where that is too so I know where to go. Don't be vague, I can't understand vague instructions when i read them.

What is the drive formatted as? this is extremely likely the issue.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • COMPATIBLE CAMCORDER & EXTERNAL HARDRIVE FOR MacBook WITHOUT FIREWIRE PORT.

    Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman,
I have a MacBook(13" Aluminum 2008 version) that does NOT have a firewire port, just USB.
    - As far as CAMCORDERS go, What Model and Brand is best compatible with it?
    - Also, as far as EXTERNAL HARDRIVES goes, which ones will be most compatible with the MacBook 13" Aluminum version 2008?
    - SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS.

    Hey,
As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.

  • What external Hardrive

    Hi,
I'm looking for a an external hardrive for backing up my system and storing bulky files. I'd like a Firewire 400/800 drive preferably.
The 'Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB Firewire 800/USB2.0' looks promising. Anyone got one?
On a seperate matter are there any SATA cards that don't affect 'sleep'. My next step in storage will be an eSATA setup I suspect.

As you have a Quad your SATA host adapter choices are limited to PCIe. The Sonnet E4P and E4i both support sleep mode. You can see more on the E4P here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/e4p/
Today FirmTek announced their 2 port PCIe card will ship in the 3rd quarter for $99. It will support sleep. The press release is here:
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2se2-e/
There are other PCIe SATA cards coming as low as $50 that are Mac compatible but I do not know if they will support sleep yet.
As far as FW800 you pay a lot for these enclosures and I am not sure I would buy one just for backup. FW400 is pretty good for this purposre - about 65-70% as fast. WiebeTech has the Maxelerate FW400/USB enclosure on sale for $49.95 and AMUG members get another 10% off.
This enclosure is die cast aluminum and includes a FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 hub. The fan keeps the drive cool and the enclosure has a small foot print.

I would buy the Maxtor 300GB at Outpost on sale for $89.99

  • Nothing is going from my external hardrive into my trash (run on a network)

    Hello
We use one external hardrive between four of us in our studio, run on a network. I am trying to delete stuff from the hardrive, but anything I put in the trash is not appearing there. Some of the time it says its because the file is in use - which it is not, and other times the file seems to be dropped in the trash no problem (and I get the deletion warning box), but when I go to empty, nothing is there. I've restarted my machine twice, and some of the files have appeared back to where they originally were, and others have disappeared, and aren't being found in spotlight.
Items from my desktop are going in fine, but I can't really transfer stuff from hardrive to desktop to trash, mainly because I finish in half an hour and take my laptop with me, and it will still be transferring by then!
    Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks

Did you put the library on the external drive, or just the media folder. See this migrate iTunes library post for the way this ought to be done and recovery tips for when it is no longer possible.
