Which external HD do you think it's better?Lacie?

which external HD do you think it's better in stablity and safe?
Lacie? Glyph? G-drive? Imomega? or other?

It isn't as easy as that, I'm afraid, music production. All of those makers produce a variety of models. personally I would be happy buying any of the LaCie, Glyph or G-drives, as long as they met my other specifications (FW 400, ideally FW 800 and an appropriate capacity) . They are all good drives.
Assuming you want to use them for music then it is worth noting that the Glyph drives generally have fans, which might not be a good thing in a music recording environment because of noise issues. Some of the LaCie's do and some don't , from memory. The Iomega "Ultramax" drives look as if they are fanless but I'm not sure about the others. Iomega make some good stuff and some not so good , in my experience.
The G-Drive looks as if it operates on similar principles to the OWC drives I mentioned earl;ier and I wouldn't be surprised if the ultimate manufacturer is one and the same.
You need to bear in mind that most external drive makers are really just assemblers. They use components from different manufacturers at different times, so you really need to check the specifications for the particular model you are considering.
But tell us more about what you need. Are you looking at a large drive, seperately powered, or a small portable drive powered by your computer, for example? What do you actually want to do with it?
Cheers

Aloha-Steve here, 1st time forum user ever. Our company produces "Kiana's Flex Appeal" fitness show on ESPN reaching 80 million homes. We just bought a few Power Books and need to now "which external mic should we buy to record voice onto our new websites being designed? The voice(s) will be incorporated into a custom song being composed." We don't have access to a studio at this moment and want to know what to buy to do a few lines. The internal mic isn't clear enough. Thank you in advance. Mahalo. www.kiana.com

I was also looking at Bose Companion 2 for my setup. However reviewers seem to be divided on these speakers. As a matter of fact, these speakers are a bit expensive for the provided features IMHO.

  • Which external HD would you recommend?

Hi, I'm looking to buy an external HD which I think will just be used to back-up all my stuff. Problem is I know nothing about them and I'd be grateful for any advice.
The LaCie D2 hard drive Extreme 200Gb is one I'm considering. It can be connected via USB 2.0, FireWire 400 or 800.
It seems a good price and I can't see me needing more than 200Gb.
Can anyone say why I should or shouldn't go with this one?
What about a HD with just a USB connection - it'll be cheaper of course, so is the only advantage of FW the speed? How much difference is there - are we talking huge?
And what others should I consider?

I would like to second the recommendation of OWC and their Mercury Elite Pro drives. They can be had in either USB2/FW400 or USB2/FW400/FW/800 configurations. I am not sure if they ship internationally, but they are quality Hitachi drives and use the Oxford 911 FW chipset. Not a hitch with either Panther or Tiger.
Since you have the Rev B iMac, it came with at least a 250GB drive and I would not get a drive that is smaller than your external. The difference in price in minimal and in any case, it is cheaper than having to replace it because it is too small.
Something that I do with my drive is to partition it into 2, 80GB partitions. My iMac has the 160GB drive, so I can use SuperDuper to clone a bootable copy to one parition and use the second for an additional clone or straight data backup.

  • W530 - Which external speakers do you recommend ?

I know that the W530 + docking station is subject to very loud sound cracks. However I don't know yet if my setup has this issue because I don't have any external speakers connected to the docking station yet.
So could you recommend me any good external speakers for my setup in the following price ranges (USD or EUR) ?
    0 - 50,
    50 - 100,
    100 - 150.
A 2.0 speakers setup would be great (I don't have enough space for a subwoofer).
Moreover I don't like speakers with lot of colored lights or leds when speakers are "on".
If possible, I would also privilege speakers (by order of high to low priority)
black or dark grey color instead of other colors,
    mat finishing instead of glossy,
ability to tune bass volume directly on speakers instead of software,
bluetooth connection instead of wire connection.
These speakers will be used mainly for (by order of high to low priority)
    music listening,
    video watching,
    gaming (maybe).
    Thanks for your help,
    Bertrand

  • I want to get the iphone 5s the day it comes out. Do you think the best way is to go to the apple store or wait at Verizon. I know when the iphone 5 came out here that they sold out at Verizon. The closest apple store is an hour away.

I want to get the new iPhone 5s right when it comes out. I was just wondering what you guys thought. Should I go to the apple store (closet one is an hour away and always busy) or should I go to my local Verizon store. I know when the 5 came out last year they ran out of the iPhone 5. What do you think my best bet will be??

There's really no way anyone can even guess, since we have no idea what sort of stock will be available and how Apple will distribute it. It's not impossible that your local Verizon store will not have any units at all on the first day, or they could have a quantify. We just can't know. If your Verizon store can't give you some idea, you'll just have to make your best guess. Note that people are already lining up at Apple Stores in at least a couple of cities according to reports, and started doing so earlier this week.

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months.  I use external hard drives and save nothing on my computer.  it takes a long time to render now. do you think something is wrong with computer. took it to mac store but they fail to help me.  I have a 13 inch mac book pro 10.6.8 8gb 2.3 gfz intel core i5

What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go.  And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too.  FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't.

  • Which do you think; Windows 7: 32-bit / 64-bit, (plus unused RAM issues) is best for video editing?

    Hi there!
Just received delivery of a Lenovo G550 with the following spec:
    2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo,
    4GB (DDR3 - 1066Hz) RAM,
    500GB HDD
    NVIDIA GeForce G210M (512MB)
    Windows 7
The entire purpose for buying this laptop, was for video editing and it is the best spec I could find for my needs and budget.
    So what's the problem?
    1) Windows 7 is installed as 32-bit, not 64 bit. Why is this? I was given no choice in this decision.
    2) Only 2.96GB of that juicey RAM is being used by Windows 7. I need as much RAM as possible for video editing.
    3) Lenovo sent NO install disc. - When I eventually get a virus or my HDD fails, I have NO WAY to clean install the very product I have just purchased! (A laptop with Windows 7 OS).
    Considerations:
As I understand it (please comment if there are alternative views on this); The 64-bit architecture is only useful for compatible software which has been designed to run 64-bit.
The video editing software I use is "Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0"
The suggested problems with Windows 7 run as 64-bit include:
    * Possible lack of driver compatibility support.
    * Possibility of 32-bit programs running SLOWER in 64-bit environment, than their native 32-bit environment.
    * Higher running temperatures & processor cooling issues.
    * No performance gains for all other programs running as 32-bit (email, internet browser, etc).
The suggested advantages with Windows 7 run as 64-bit could be:
    * Full utilisation of the 4GB RAM. (Presently limited to 2.96GB)
    * Faster rendering and video editing tasks in 64-bit environment.
    Questions:
    4) How can I get an install disc for Windows 7? Shouldn't this come with the computer?
    5) Do you think the potential hassle and architecture conflicts are worth suffering, to get the reported performance gains of 64-bit architecture and the remaining unused RAM?
Thank you for any help and advice!

contact lenovo support line for windows 7 dvds, but make sure if they send recovery dvds instead of windows 7 dvd.
most of people are having trouble with installing windows and drivers, so companies has found as this as solution to send recovery dvd -if asked- or using hidden partition to recovery system - like one key recover - instead of.
but if you ask me, they need to send dvds.
i'll contact the mods and admins about this issue, please stay connected to this post.

The monitor will work if it has an HDMI, VGA ir DVI input. If it only has a VGA input you will need this adopter

  • Does iPhoto not have safeguards against accidentally deleting an entire photo book, which is very easily done (when you think you are deleting just a photo)? No "are you sure you want to delete?". No way of copying your book before, or restoring it after?

Does iPhoto not have safeguards against accidentally deleting an entire photo book, which is very easily done with a single press of delete (and which can be done when you think you are deleting just a photo)? No "are you sure you want to delete?" before it happens? No way of copying your book while you are working on it (to make multiple versions of it, or just to have a safeguard copy), and no real way of restoring it after (since, remarkably, the photo books don't appear as items - items which could very easily be recovered otherwise)?

I get a dialog box when I try to delete a book.
And if you right click on the book in the left column you can duplicate it so you can have multiple versions.

  • I need to delete a lot of duplicates on iPhoto. I just bought my MacBook Pro and was so excited I downloaded my external hard drive without thinking through the process. I now realize I had my photos doubled up. So I actually have the same library twice.

    Hello All!
I am so excited about my new computer and I didn't know that my external hard drive had so many pictures duplicated on it. So I downloaded the entire hard drive. I thought iPhoto was going to be my answer, and now after reading a lot of discussions, it seems I have royally screwed up.  Please help me fix this problem. I am a computer novice. An even more Mac novice. I need very simple directions.  I would just start over with iPhoto, but I downloaded my digital camera with brand new photos on iPhoto and also downloaded my digital camera software on my new MacBookPro.  I am afraid if I "start over" with iPhoto I will lose my digital camera pictures. I bought the Mac to finally get my pictures straight, and look at the mess I have made.  I had AVG PC cleanup and used that program last night to delete duplicates from my PC. I also used it to delete duplicates from my external hard drive. I omega. I know, I know, too late huh? But I am teachable. And I now have my external hard drive fixed. But now, my question to the community is how to fix my new Mac, and my iPhoto.
    Thanks,

When you say to remove the photos out of the iPhoto folder, then import the clean single copies, I am understanding that the "original" file that the decloner was run against is now the "clean" single copies?
Ok, you've got iPhoto Library that you have imported everything into, you can't delete the iPhoto Library and start over because you have only one copy of some pictures in there, combined with a lot of duplicates.
You want all the duplicates out, but it will take you ages to do it by hand.
    What you do is.
1: Right click on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents"
2: You will see a folder called Originals, these are all your original photo's, copy this folder to a external drive someplace, it's your backup.
3: Select the Originals folder again and from the Finder Menu > File > Duplicate.
4: Now you will have a OriginalsCopy folder, move that OriginalsCopy folder onto the desktop area out of the iPhoto Library folder. Close the iPhoto Library folder/window.
5: Download the Decloner software and install it, use it to find all the "real" duplicates, via it's content on the OriginalsCopy folder.
6: From the Finder menu > New Folder, now send the duplicate files to that folder, so all that is left in the OriginalsCopy folder is 1 copy of your pictures, minus all the duplicates which are now in New Folder.
7: Open iPhoto and remove all your pictures in there. The iPhoto Library will update to become empty.
8: Now import the pictures from the OriginalsCopy folder, these will now have only one copy of each picture.
9: Open your New Folder, from the Edit menu > Select All and
10 From the Finder > File Menu > Open With > Preview.
Now you have one copy in your iPhoto Library and the duplicates in a New Folder opened with Preview which you can compare to make sure.
Make as many backups of your pictures as you think you need during this prcess, but eventually you only want 1 picture of all you have in the iPhoto Library.
Some pictures may be the same thing but a little smaller etc., these obviously are not duplicates, and you can weed those out by hand in iPhoto.
    Good Luck.

  • Best IDE & Platform Configuration? What do you think?

What do you think the best IDE is out there? I want to compile and create applications as well as servlets and beans, but my focus would be on the beans, servlets, jsp, etc, the web stuff. Once I have the IDE for that, what is the best configuration for developing under that environment. For example I would like to use the the JavaMail API as well, and that is available for the J2EE. So I can install both the J2SE and J2EE SDK's right? Should I accept their default installation directories? Is it possible to move files, the .jar files for example over the to a single directory for centralization? Help, trying to get an understaning how to create a nice development environment. Simple, efficient, etc.
    Thanks so much!!
    Terry

I personally think Eclipse is outstanding. I used JBuilder for a while, but it insisted on formatting code the JBuilder way. Eclipse also has refactoring, which is a major bonus. Moving classes is now a few clicks instead of performing a search-replace on all your files. There are UML and dozens of other types of plug-in.
As far as setting-up your environment, I normally duplicate a web application's deployment. So, the external JAR's I need are in WEB-INF/lib. The IDE should take care of classpath issues, if you perform the initial project set-up properly. I would also learn Jakarta's Ant. It makes deployment a lot easier, at the expense of some up-front development.

  • Bootable backups - disk utility and which external drives

    hi all
    (maybe) a simple question
i have been using time machine for my back ups but i am now planning to have a second backup program. i'm looking at using a bootable clone in this regard.
i started looking at super duper and ccc however a few stumbling blokes have just popped up (well at least warning signs that may be of no issue at all - hence this question)
    * can ALL external drives be used for bootable backup purposes?
I have a couple of western digital ones - my book essential and my passport.
On the western digital website, it does not have my model numbers listed - does it matter?
Is it a case of any usb connected external drive can be used for intel macs? - i am getting conflicting views on various postings i have seen re this question
    second part/question is:
i also understand disk utility can be used for cloning (no updates, just full clones) and as a bootable back up.
if, just for the purposes for having a back up bootable drive, can i set up a clone without too much regard for recloning it (say every 2 months) and if i need to use it, then boot the mac back up with it and then do a full restore using my up to date time machine backups? am i missing something with that method? is that too simple?
feedback much appreciated on these 2 areas
    cheers

    1) there is no way to make a BOOTABLE clone using disk utility or time machine whatsoever, right? DU will only allow me to make clones and Recovery HD essentially allows me to restore the system (ie software) AFTER booting up?
Correct with respect to TM; all you get is a copy of the Recovery HD.
Disk Utility will make a bootable clone, but there are downsides.  First, it can only do a whole copy;  unlike a specialized cloning app, it won't copy just what's new or changed, so takes a long time.  Second, as I understand it, it won't copy to a smaller volume, even if there's plenty of free space on the internal.  For example, if you have a 1 TB internal with only 400 GB on it, DU won't copy it to a 500 GB drive.  I may be wrong, but I've seen that posted here by folks who seem to know.
does file b here mean aliases of file b in each backup?
It acts sorta like that, but no.
There's one copy of the actual file, but two hard links to it, one in each folder.  The file actually "belongs" to both folders at the same time!  The good part of that is, if you delete either backup folder, the other one remains intact.  The downside is, how the heck do you count the size of each folder accurately?
that was a great read to understand TM workings and attain some level of piece of mind re my question of incremental v differential backups
It is a bit hard to get your head around!    I've been revising and editing that for several years trying to make it clear.
And remember, this only applies to TM as far as I know, at least for consumer-level backup apps.
While it may be possible to boot your computer to an external hard drive, Western Digital does not provide technical support for booting your computer using an external hard drive. If you intend to make a copy of your boot drive, or install your operating system, please use a second internal drive (EIDE or Serial ATA), rather than an external drive.
Yup.  WD doesn't exactly have a good reputation for support.
i guess i'll trial CCC or SD and see what happens with the drives that i have re BOOTABILITY
I use CCC myself -- it's a great product with great support.
I downloaded SD a couple of times, but never got around to experimenting with it.  Lots of folks swear by it, and say it also has excellent support.  To a large degree, it just seems to be a matter of which approach and GUI you prefer, but CCC does allow "archiving" of changed and deleted stuff (differently from TM), and can copy Recovery HDs.  I don't think SD does either, but it may have other advantages.
    4) and, i think one final question, and a simple/naive one at that.....if my internal hard drive physically collapses then what are the benefits of that bootable clone v not having one?
You can start up from the clone and run normally (but likely a bit more slowly), although you probably won't be as up-to-date as you would after restoring to a new or repaired internal, or an external, from TM.  The reason is, running a clone backup, even an incremental one, takes much longer and far more CPU than one of TM's quick incrementals, which it will do hourly if you let it.  Few folks using a clone for an OSX drive do it more than once per day, many only once a week.
The downside is, if you run from the clone, you no longer have a backup -- the clone has the only copy of your stuff.  That's one reason many folks who use only a cloning app have two (or more) externals with them.
Apart from (obviously) being able to start up immediately to do whatever i wanted to do at the time, after i replace the hard drive (if that was to be the case) are there further expenses or much inconvenience suffered due to not having a bootable drive in getting things all sorted internally on the mac? what is the process in that regard, generally speaking
Just clone the external to the new internal, and you're back in business.
thanks heaps for your time to answer these and previous questions and to build up my understanding of these topics
    You're quite welcome.

  • Which external harddrive best for huge FCP video project?

    Hi,
i'm editing a massive film, pulling media off 3 1TG external harddrives. The drives I've been using are a Chinese brand that works smoothly with premiere but is way too slow for FCP (can't play through the timeline without getting dropped frame notices, even though I'm not daisy chaining them). I'm thinking I have to replace all the drives with better, faster ones. Sooo, wanted to ask you pros, what brand of harddrive is the best and most reliable for this workflow (and reasonable affordable- i have to buy a few!)? Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch! O

dropped frames, fyi, are on playback only. It doesn't mean you are losing frames in your files or in your sequences. It's not necessarily the drive speed causing the dropped frames. Sometimes it's just the inability for FCP to process the frames fast enough, which is processor based, not drive based, and has a lot to do with filters, transitions, and the like. You can turn off the dropped frames warning in the User Prefs.
That being said, if it IS drive speed, make sure that, not only are you using at least Firewire 800 drives, but also that the drives are 7200 RPM and not 5400 RPM. The reason you may think it works better with Premier is because Premier may not have a dropped frames warning.
