Which SSD is the best for Macbook pro 17''
I want to upgrade my HDD in my mac (i have the 750Gb 5400rpm from the factory) with a new SSD.
I ask if someone knows which ssd is best for my mac (17'' early 2011 2.3ghz).
I also read in many forums that they has problems about write-erase etc. And something about TRIM (i really dont know what it is...)
I only use my mac for my job ( i am a tv-film director and i use it to edit)
Will i see any diferents (i work with FinalCut-Premiere-AfterEffect) if i install ssd for what i do or it will be a waste of money?
Thanks a lot!None

What Blue Microphone is best for MacBook Pro?
I am thinking of the Blue microphones' snowball or the tiki mics. They are both portable and have excellent reviews for MacBook Pro users, and can use in Garageband for voice overs audio to put in iMovie/FCPX...
Hi Melophage,
Thanks for your helpful reply
I bought a new MacBook 13.3 / MacBook Pro 15-inch Superdrive 9.5mm 8x
Part No. : 661-4279
For hard drives, I have a choice of:
1) W. Digital Scorpio Blue SATA 3GB/s 5,400rpm 8MB 2.5" 500GB
2) W. Digital WD7500PPVX SATA111 5,400rpm 8MB 2.5" 6GB/s 750MB
3) W. Digital Black 9.5mm 7200rpm 16MB SATA 6gb/s
Will any, or all of these be installed and function easily in my A1260 Macbook Pro?
Again, thank you for your help,

Best external hard drive for Macbook pro and Aperture
Hi, any recomendations for an external hard drive for the macbook pro and aperture. I was looking for approx 300Gb !
Many thanks
macphiPersonally I have had poor luck with LaCie Big Disk peformance and support and don't recommend LaCie. However I do recognize that my sample of one is statistically insignificant.
The eSATA concept is interesting, but bleeding tech edge at the moment. For a solid solution that works now I recommend FW800 (forget USB) and RAID 0 technology. I have had great success with OWC and just bought their least expensive (in $ per GB) 640 GB FW800 US$370 RAID O drive setup: <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/ME8R7640GB16/>.
Just this week OWC introduced RAID 0 +1 drives that have RAID 0 speeds but also provide mirror backups. Perhaps the very best solution but pricey.
EDIT: If you bought a 15" MBP instead of the 17" you forever lack FW 800. Go for a FW 800 or an eSATA Express Card solution when available. You could buy an OWC drive now and jusr run it FW 400 until you get an Express Card FW800 port. The OWC drive came with ports and cables for both FW 800 and FW 400.

I was considering purchasing a western digital external hard drive but they also receive a lot of negative feedback.
I have never used firewire previously but am interested in getting feedback as to how useful forum readers find this feature.
In terms of size am looking for 1TB approx.

Best external hard drive for macbook pro 10.5.8?
I have a macbook pro 2008, OSX 10.5.8 (My model number is MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008) and will be upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6 soon. I am just about to order an external hard drive and have shortlisted from the link below. Please let me know if it'll run well, I was told to order 500GB and not 1TB. It seems Seagate and WD are more compatible for Windows. Will the Sony hard drive work on 10.6 as well smoothly once I upgrade? Any advice on other hard drives would be very very useful. With thanks.

I checked my disk space in my 6 year old pro and it seems I have used 80-90 GB with around 90 GB free space still. Thus 500GB might be more than enough I hope. If there's not much price difference - I could look at 1 TB.
If any external hard drive should work - please let me know if the WD below would be ok too? As it's little cheaper than the Sony I selected http://www.flipkart.com/wd-elements-2-5-inch-500-gb-external-hard-drive/p/itmdmh dqa7q3rtjq?pid=ACCDMHDQAN9EPTRS&srno=b_1&ref=134a18e1-c6e9-4870-8cff-01087274cdf 2

Best external RAID option for MacBook Pro
I have been searching for an external RAID enclosure/solution to use with my MacBook Pro (with Thunderbolt). I would like to use Thunderbolt, but if Firewire 800 provides a more reliable solution than any of the Thunderbolt solutions I will go with the more stable options.
I have looked at a variety of options, and it appears the following are the top runners for a solution, any thoughts on any of these options:
Get a Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt array
The reliability of this unit really worries me, and if it failed as frequently as some are indicating, it could be busy nearly all the time recovering if I had 6+GB of content on the thing when it failed
Advantage of this unit is I could get enough capacity in one chassis to hold me for a fair length of time
The big disadvantage, if this thing fails as frequently as some indicate, restoring 6+GB of content to the thing does not sound fun
Get one of the Thunderbolt, OS X Software RAID boxes, (the likes of G-Tech, and Western Digital)
The use of the OS to manage the RAID array worries me, how is performance, how easy is it to replace a faulty drive and have the OS detect the new drive and start the rebuild process?
How long will it take to rebuilt a failed disc in the 2 to 3TB range?
Use the Firewire 800 port on a CalDigit VR 2 two drive RAID 1 mirror set
This seems to have fairly decent reviews, although there is not a lot of end user reviews that I have found
It will take at least three of the largest unit CalDigit makes to handle my images and have room for new images
Clearly Firewise will not be as fast as the Thunderbird devices
Get the CalDigit VR 2 but try to use the USB3 connection
CalDigit has a USB 3 card that can fit in the 17" MacBook Pro, but I have no idea how well the USB 3 card works with the MacBook Pro?
USB 3 does not daisy chain, the CalDigit card has two ports, however, if you have more than two external arrays you are still in a mood of swapping external drives
Drobo is coming out with Thunderbolt solutions
The bare box is pricey, add four or five large drives and there is some serious money in the thing
There are lot's of reports of failures and inability to rebuild, etc., on the Drobo
The OWC Quad interface QX2
A fair number of reports of failures on this device
Little information on rebuild speed in event a drive needs to be replaced
I am not very interested in a NAS, even with GigaBit Ethernet the performance will not be as good as direct attached
I do have a 3 year old Mac Pro that is under utilized, I could add more storage and even a RAID controller card for an external enclosures, but again, trying to edit images and/or videos across the network may not be a viable option
Any other ideas, something KNOWN to be good, with minimal failures, and when it does fail it rebuilds quickly and safely
The last piece of the solution is ideally a solution that is fairly low noise.
Any suggestions, direct end user experience, etc., would be greatly appreciatedWhat a list
Well, take a look at CalDigit's HDPro2 8TB (supporting RAID 5 and 6)
http://www.CalDigit.com/store.asp#HDPro2
It's more expensive than others but works with your MacPro thorugh PCIe connection and very reliable comparing to others.
or a cheaper HDOne 8TB in RAID 5/6

External Hard drive for Macbook Pro
HI Guys
I have just upgraded to a MBP from my powerbook which died loosing some data.
I work with photo's video and data and want an external drive to store all of these and also to back up my whole system for recovery.
I need some advise as to what i need as there seems to be lots of options out there.
I understand that the faster the drive the faster the transfer but am less sure about connection methods
USB2 firewire 400/800 ethernet networked storage
I have some questions
1 can you connect a drive by more than one of these at the same time say USB2 and firewire ?
2 is networked storage via ethernet and my router going to be very slow or comparable to USB2
does anybody have experience of these
3 can all drives be formatted to work with mac or do i need to look for a mac specific one.
I am looking at a 250-320GB drive size do not really need portability as anything i need to travel can go on 120gb internal drive
lastly will network drive be able to hold itunes library and iphoto library in a way that i can use them through my network or will it be to slow
Any help appreciated
John
Macbook PRO DC2 2.16 15 Ali ipod Photo etc Mac OS X (10.4.2)I agree. I'll add my 2 cents as well
1 - I would say you cannot use both connections at the same time. USB2 is slightly faster than a Firewire 400, but Firewire 800 is the fastest, if you can find a storage device with a Firewire 800 connection (they are somewhat rare).
2 - Networked storage will work only at 1/4th the speed of Firewire 400 or USB2.
3 - I have not seen an external drive that cannot be formatted as a MAC drive. (remember one thing about formatting drives, if you have a drive that is formated in Windows NTFS format, you (to the best of my knowledge) only be able to read from it)
4 - I would imagine that you could "stream" iTunes music from a networked drive, iTunes does a great job streaming over an Airport Express. I don't think it would be a problem at all.

Portable External Hard Drive for MacBook Pro
I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Last week I had the 500GB hard drive replaced with a 240GB SSD. Now I'm looking for a portage 1TB external hard drive to store my photos, music, and everything else that was previously on my hard drive. I purchased a Seagate Back Up Plus from the Apple store last week after talking with a couple of different people that work there. But I'm not overly impressed with it and want to return it for something else. The main reason is that it seems to be more for backing up social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and I don't use those enough to have this matter. I'm looking for a good and reasonably priced portable hard drive that I can use to store my things on that also can be backed up with my Time Machine. Reviews for this EHD are good, so maybe I'm wrong in wanting to return it. Hoping someone can help me out with pros/cons and offer some advice on something better.

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner. -
Choosing an external hard drive for MacBook Pro video editing?
This summer, I'll be taking an introductory video production/editing class, using Final Cut Express 4.
I own a late 2009 MacBook Pro (2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, FireWire 800, GeForce 9400M), which I'd like to use for editing at home, i.e. when I don't have access to the class video lab.
I've heard that I should buy an external hard drive, so as not to fill up and wear out my laptop's 160GB hard drive. Google returns a tsunami of information on hard drive choices, much of it undated, and mostly geared towards pro video editors. Overwhelming, and not that helpful so far.
For my basic needs, are all hard drives more or less interchangable? Is one brand/model better suited for video editing (versus backups)? What are the critical specs to consider?
I hope to continue with movie-making as hobby - and to promote my small business - but I do not expect to put together a pro setup.
Thanks.Get as big a firewire drive as you can afford, making sure it runs at 7200rpm. Media files are huge: regular DV is around 13GB/hour. Most HD media is transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE as it's ingested, around 40GB/hour.
I've had very good luck with drives from Other World Computing (http://macsales.com/). If you'll be transporting the drive between school and home regularly, I'd suggest a bus-powered drive, just because it's smaller. Lots of folks in this forum swear by LaCie drives. -

I'd recommend the LaCie 1TB Quadra drive at £134 it has eSATA, USB2 and FW400 and FW800 Interfaces (it comes with all four cables) and I've found them reliable and rugged.
