Which external Microphone for outdoor????

Im currently waiting on the Canon HF G30 to be released and would like some information or opinions on which is the better external microphone for my shooting. I will be shooting 90% outdoor and 10% indoor. Automotive and racing events is the normal criteria and I think i have it narrowed down to 3 different ones.
1. Rode NTG-2
2. Rode VideoMic Pro
3. Rode VideoMic with rycote.
Which is the better for outdoor racing type shooting ie. drag racing, rock climbing, sidexside racing and some car shows?

This belongs in Cameras and Camcorders (hopefully a moderator will approve it shortly)
I don't see any of the units in the Flip line saying that they have a mic jack, so there are no microphones that will be directly compatible with your camcorder.
It looks like the only solution available to you is to use a standalone audio recorder such as the Zoom H1 or H2 and splice the audio into the video during the editing process. (FYI, this is how the pros do it, and is the reason they use the "clapper" in Hollywood, as it provides an easily recognizable video and audio cue for syncing everything together..)

Which external Microphone do you recommend for PowerBook for website audio?

Aloha-Steve here, 1st time forum user ever. Our company produces "Kiana's Flex Appeal" fitness show on ESPN reaching 80 million homes. We just bought a few Power Books and need to now "which external mic should we buy to record voice onto our new websites being designed? The voice(s) will be incorporated into a custom song being composed." We don't have access to a studio at this moment and want to know what to buy to do a few lines. I was also looking at Bose Companion 2 for my setup. However reviewers seem to be divided on these speakers. As a matter of fact, these speakers are a bit expensive for the provided features IMHO.
Could you share why you choose these speakers and what are the Pros & Cons ? Thanks.

Advice request - which external HDD for Adobe Lightroom?

I'm going to buy myself an external hdd this week, and I would be very grateful for your advice.
1) I'm shooting with Nikon D70, Canon A520, and my mobile(;]).
2) After over 1 year of shooting I have ~130GB of photos taken with these cameras + I have some negative from analog times, which I'm going to scan (I estimate them to be next ~20GB)
3) I would like to keep all of above photos on external hdd and import them into Abobe Lightroom (tagging + developing), and and of course apply retouching to some of them in PS CS2.
4) My computers are : old PC desktop with XP, on which I will be only viewing these pictures, and IBM T43 with Vista on which I'm going to do all the developing. [Yes, I know that Apple is better, and I love Apple, but I can'tafford one yet].
Given above assumptions, which external hdd from the ones I've preselected should I choose ? I'm on the budget here, and the ones that I can afford are :
WD My Book Pro 250GB USB 2.0/FireWire400/FireWire800 16MB Cache
WD My Book Premium 320GB USB 2.0/FireWire400 8MB Cache
WD My Book Essential 500GB USB2.0 8MB Cache
LaCie Porsche 500GB USB 2.0 8MB Cache
I'm asking mainly because I don't have any idea about how fast should a drive be to work with Lightroom with decent speed.
Also : should I buy FireWire controller for my T43 laptop, or will USB 2.0 be enough for my purposes ?

Either a PC or MAC is fine, but you've entered a field where affordability is proportional to the number of photos you manage, the type of processing you perform and the level of security you are comfortable with. This is entirely separate of your budget.
USB2 and/or Firewire Drives work fine. From your list, I've owned both the LaCie Porsche and a WD MyBook. They both failed for different reasons. All hard drives will eventually fail. If you can't afford to lose your photo library you need some sort of redundency. The reliability of that redundency (RAID) and or speed of retrieval determines what technology is the minimum you need to afford. Or, if you have more time than budget, you can archive on DVDs. Keep in mind that even DVD's will fail over time.
The faster the drive, the faster the backup (redundency), the faster the throughput, and the faster you have access to managing and processing your image library.
Did I answer your question: No. However, whatever you get, and assuming you value your photos, make sure you get two of them so you can build some redundency into your budget. If you're feeling lucky, get the largest drive you can afford and make sure you leave yourself a lot of time for those backups.

Which external drive for backups?

My brand new 21.5" iMac is on its way here today, and I've been told to buy an external drive for backups. Which I think is a great idea. However, my head's starting to hurt from all the info I'm reading here on the forum about WHICH one, Firewire cables, etc etc. The Rocstor 500GB has been recommended to me personally, but I've read about Lacie and a few other brands. I'm thinking it'd be best to get a 1T size. But WHICH HARD DRIVE SHOULD I GET? I don't wanna spend a lot of bucks!!!
Plus I have a Firewire cable but how do I know if it's a 2 or a 4? I bought it when I migrated data from my Silver edition iMac to my G4 iMac back in 2004 or 2005.

Congratulations Sheryl on the new iMac.
I recently replaced a G-4 tower with an iMac. The G-4 had a port for Firewire 400. The iMac came equipped with one Firewire 800 port a firewire cable and 4USB ports. I suspect that also applies to your new machine. In order to transfer files from one machine to the other using Firewire 400/800 I had to buy an adapter from the Apple store. Your help menu will explain how to set up the iMac as a target for the transfer.
As to backup: I use Super Duper and over 8 years had backed up religiously to a Lacie external HD. About the time I needed to use it as a file transfer source to the iMac it quit.
After much study and considering how Time Machine can eat up space I settled on the external hard drives described below - all were partitioned. The Drobo uses firewire 800 and 4 multiple internal hard drives. It is the place where time machine is backed up. The setup was about $600.
The two lacie hard drives are USB 2.0 driven.
I have learned the hard way that it pays to backup the backups.
If I could only have one external hard drive and with all things considered I would opt for the 1TB Lacie Stark (about $125) that is USB driven.
Sure hope this helps a bit. To help further we need to know more specifics about your need.

External microphone for HDR-AS100V

Can anyone tell me the specs for an external stereo microphone. Plug size, impedance, Powered/Unpowered, etc. I called Sony Tech support and they referred me to this web page. You would think they would have this infornmation.

Input is a 3.5 mm 3 pole connector much as typical earbud headphones use. There are a variety of stereo mics out there that plug directly into the camera like the Sony ECM-DS70P. If having a mic of this design being right below the camera is a problem, you use a simple stereo headphone extender to place it away from the camera.Another Sony stereo mic to consider is the ECM-CS3 which has a cord coming out of it already.Most stereo headphones that have a mic "for use with a phone" are 4 pole and the connection points will be trying to use the speakers in the headphones as a mic. You can't hope for something designed to generate soud waves to pick them up. Like going kto the ear doctor asking him to install some vocal cords in your ear canal to improve your hearing. Above mentioned mics can be found on ebay but be careful as many are dirt cheap from china and clones, lacking the audio quality of the real deals. External microphone for hp 600-1160uk

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me.
I want to add a logitech microphone and use that instead of the internal microphone.
I have purchased a standard desktop microphone with a jack but when I plug it into the "audio line in" on the left side of the computer it does see there is something plugged in but cannot recognise its a logitech microphone it just calls it a "Line In Realtek high definition audio default device" and it cannot hear an noise.
I have tried looking at the settings but there doesn't seem a way of changing it and when I try to add another device it wont find it.
Any ideas?

That would be what would be expected, there's no way for the OS to identify which kind of microphone you've installed, the mini-jack does not transmit any data. You may have other issues such as needing to set gain, etc, but it will never identify a microphone as anything more.

My imac doesn't have a mic in, only a line in. Is it possible to use the iPhone as external mircrophone with some extra software maybe? I want to create video tutorials and the internal microphone isn't good enough for this.

Actually it's called a Thunderbolt port, and you can use any monitor with a Thunderbolt input. You can also purchase an inexpensive Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, and use any monitor with an HDMI input. There are many more of them to choose from.

ok i got a new macbook and considering getting an external drive like the g or the lacie but what would you guys suggest?
also is it better to use it just as a backup and to copy stuff to it or as a second drive to basically store extra music and such?

alright got a problem. tried to plug hdmi tv screen with adapters vga-dvi-hdmi and still nothing!!!
the display preference has nothing in it ! all my macs have video mirroring and many possibilities while here i got only resolution and calbration.
is intel different from other powermacs for that video thing? or is it lion that doesn't work?

I decided the easiest solution is to buy a "boom box"! The JVC Kaboom RV-NB70 seems to be good....I can attach the uni directional vocal microphone. I submitted 2 questions to JVC - can I connect my iPad to play iTunes and to my MacBook Pro when playing iMovies.... I will let you know the answers. I am sure most of you already know the answer. I am a new MAC user and really love it!!!!!
