Which external USB HDD can i use for backups

Hi,
I'm going to buy an external USB HDD for my MacBook for bootable backups (by SuperDuper). Can I purchase just any external hard drive or are there any limitations?
Thanks,
Vadim

Hi,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The limitations are the usual reliability and manufacturer's reputation. USB 2.0 (480Mbps) itself will cause no issues when making your choice. It's not possible to give a definitive answer on which manufacturer/make/model is best but I can give you an opinion. I like Iomega and Hitachi. For plug-and-play look at Iomega or D-I-Y using an Icy Box look at Hitachi Deskstar range.

I recently moved and had to disconnect my WD My Pro Edition II 2TB external drive I had been using for backup.
Its been several months (many upgrades to the iMac software during this time), and now when I try to reconnect the external dire (Use a firewire cable) it does not recognize the drive is there.  I also tried "reloading" software from the Western Digital site, but after following all the instructions, it looks like my iMac doesn't support this software (I can't even locate it after I follow all the instructions.
Thnaks,  for anyones ideas on how I can get this working again.....

First of all, you do not really want to use their software; if you want a bootable clone, use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you simply want to drag and drop some files, you don't need software to do that. The important thing on any external drive is that you format/partition it correctly (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and using GUID partition scheme).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about WD drives or their software, so I don't have any idea what kind of backup you did. Having said that, it should still recognize the external even if it's outdated. Have you tried mounting it manually in Disk Utility? If you can get it to mount, you could (worst case scenario) just drag your stuff off onto your internal and then reformat the external.

  • Which mobile broadband dongle can I use for my PowerBook G4 running with OSX 10.5.8 please?

I was given an O2 dongle E173 as a gift but cannot use it as the specification is for an Intel Processor which of course the PowerBook G4 does not have!
    Which dongle can  I use?

    Hi,
If a USB mobile broadband modem for some reason cannot be used with a certain computer, a good alternative can be a mobile broadband hotspot. This is a device (with a SIM card) that works like a mobile broadband modem, and is capable of establishing a wireless base station. The wireless connection between the computer and the hotspot is normal Wi-Fi. If the computer can handle Wi-Fi, there is no need for any additional software/driver installation. Below is merely one example.

  • HT4718 What USB Flashdrive can I use for the Recovery System a 4G or a 8G?

What size of drive do I need for the Recovery System? Can I use a USB flashdrive?

If you're talking about just the Recovery HD, you only need 1GB so use a 4GB USB thumb drive and the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to create it.
If you're talking about the ML installer (installESD.dmg) use an 8GB USB thumb drive.

  • Old Scosche (auto) 12V receptacle to USB. Can I use for my iPhone 5c?

    I have included a picture...
I originally used this to charge a device via the USB input to Micro USB.
It says out the outside "Output: 5V, 0.5A"
Can I use this with a USB 2.0 to 8 pin connector to charge my iPhone 5c? I know the amps are too low.... But will it charge it with *0* harm to the iPhone?

Yes ,Scosche are one of the best brands and it will charge although a later version will charge quicker I use the twin  USB output 10w version

  • Which external hard drive can I use with my Macbook (2009)?

I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive for my 2009 Macbook os x 10.6.8 (the heavier, white laptop). It looks like most hard drives are compatible for Macbook Pro and newer.

If your MB is an early model 2009 you can use either Firewire or USB 2 drives, late model 2009's don't have firewire so you're limited to USB.  I'd stay away from WD and Seagate externals, their enclosures aren't very reliable. The Toshiba Canvio drives work well. Pretty much any drive from OWC is top shelf http://eshop.macsales.com

  • Which External FW HDD do you use?

    Hi there,
Just wondering which brands have good and bad reputations in terms of reliability and customer service.
    Thanks for your opinions!

OH, I meant to also say WATCH OUT for the Western Digital "MyBook" series. I have a dual interface FW400/USB2 version that goes to sleep after a few mins of inactivity. Very very frustrating. This is an okay drive to do backups, but I hate leaving it attached to the Mac b/c anytime you do anything that accesses a harddrive there is a approx. a 10-second delay while the drive spools up.
I've searched for a way to disable this, even in system preferences and what I've read is that the drive enclosure itself imposes the drive spindown automatically... wow THANKS!
Oddly, the white version of the MyBook drive I saw in the Apple Store seems to not ilicit this behavior. I walked up to an iMac that had been sitting for several minutes untouched and hit spotlight search and immediately the drive was ready. On my MBP all I have to do is work on something else that doesn't hit the hard drives for like 5 mins and I can actually hear the drive spindown here on my desk - infuriating!!!

  • Which external hard drive should I use to save my iTunes library?

    Hi,
So I have collected so much music and movies in iTunes that my internal HD is practically full.  (Library is over 500GB of 1TB and the rest is taken up with my apps and programs.)  It's time to purchase an external hard drive to transfer my library to.  Furthermore, I currently have a 2TB WD My Book for Mac that I am currently using for backup.  The My Book is also full and Time Machine is deleting the oldest backups to make room for the current ones.
Here is where I need everyones advice.  I am planning on purchasing a 3TB WD My Book for Mac.  I am planning on purchasing more movies for iTunes.  Which external hard drive should I use for what?  Option A or B
Option A:  Put my iTunes library on the 2TB external hard drive and use the 3TB for backup
Option B:  Put my iTunes library on the 3TB external hard drive and continue to use the 2TB for backup
Also please give me your reasoning.
    Thanks everyone for your responses!

    Limnos,
So, let's go one step further with this.  I read your reply to moving iTunes library to an external hard drive: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4594518?tstart=0  However, if I move the iTunes library, will this include all the movies and apps that I have purchased?
    Thanks!!!!

  • I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

    Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • IMAC 2010 which HDD can I use to replace the malfunctioned Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB?

iMAC 2010 which HDD can I use to replace the malfunctioned Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB?

After doing a bit more research, the 2010 iMacs do appear to have a third cable connecting to the  hard drive, for the internal temp sensor.  This would appear to be the block of 8 pins that are on almost all drives, but they are normally intended for jumpers.  Unfortunately I was unable to find any documentation or specs that would indicate this pin block connects to the internal temp sensor on either standard (non-Apple) WD Black or Seagate 7200.12 drives.
I did find some info that may be of some use:
WD: Where to connect an external temperature sensor to a Serial ATA or EIDE hard drive.iFixit: Replace the hard drive, how do I connect the hard drive thermal sensor?
    Apple Technician Guide: iMac 2010 27" (mid-2010)
Various discussion threads I found through google searching indicated some people succeeded with installing an external temp sensor on the body of the drive.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • Which software can i use for recovery management that will allow me to use DVD's instead of Flashdsk

which software can i use for recovery management that will allow me to use DVD's instead of Flashdisk? I find DVD's easier to use. i am using windows 10

As the other posters wrote in order to take a movie file and turn it into a DVD that can be played in standard DVD players you need a DVD authoring application. That you need a separate program to create the DVD is standard procedure and has been that way since the beginning. All Apple produce that can produce video files require an external authoring program. iMovie, iPhoto and Final Cut all do this.
One other thing I will comment on is your choice of output format. You will almost certainly be disappointed with the video quality of your finished DVD if you put a HD video on a SD DVD. Unless you plan to burn a bluray disk you will get a better quality video if you output as SD if you plan to burn to an SD disk.

  • HT201269 I am trying to save memory on my iPhone 4S/ ios6. Can I back up all photos to icloud and the external hard disk I normally use for photos? If I then delete photos from the iPhone do the get deleted on iCloud?

I am trying to save memory on my iPhone 4S/ ios6.
    1) Can I back up all photos to icloud and the external hard disk I normally use for photos? If I then delete photos from the iPhone do the get deleted on iCloud?
    2) Can I back up the newsstand to iCloud and save memory on the iPhone?
    3) Can I back up the bookshelf to icloud and save memory on the iPhone?

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards

  • Can the USB NI DAQs be used for process control,eg.closed loop? or is too fast

can the USB NI DAQs be used for process control,eg.closed loop? or is too fast.

    Hi mho,
1.usb is very high speed that is correct.Better you can choose PCI DAQ.But thats upto you.
                 2. see this:-
                 http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/14136
3.If Matlab support TCP/IP, that could be an option.
                   see Another idea: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/244A37667BD7CBCE86257520007F937B
Another simplest way to do it (assuming you running Windows) is to use a Matlab script.
If both programs running on different systems:-
Most simple and slow - Create two  VI's  with shared variable on both machines, and use a matlab script to
share data. (this makes matlab some kind of "slave").
More advanced but still  relatively slow (Create two  VI's  with shared variable, on the Matlab machine build the .NET
dll, and it can be used on Matlab too ( at least at 2010b version, earlier version support only COM).
Create TCP/IP connection between two comps.
There is "out of the box" NI products, that communicate with Simulink models. You please do a simple search on that...OK
I think this link is also helpful for you:-
Procedimiento para la interface entre LabView 2009 y Matlab 2009b.pdf 1128 KB
    Anyway All the best.Try....do it.
