Which FCoE CNA card is supported in Mac Pro OS X

I am investigating which storage solution to purchase.
i wish to know when FCoE CNA cards are supported or better which FCoE based Storage solution you will suggest.

Ok, I got clarification. Now the story is (after I requested they send me written statement that my Mac Pro processor isn't compadible with the 802.11n technology) that my Airport Card (in the Mac Pro) is an older card that supports .N but won't work like the newer cards. So basically the internet connection will be non-existent and network connection will be random at best. I asked if I could go to the Apple store and get a new card and I was told that they would put a new old card because the airport card I have is specific to each machine. I was also told that the airport cards are specific to the machine and that my new iMac from Dec 08 will have a completely different airport card than the Mac Pro or a laptop. I asked if I upgrade to a new Mac Pro would that fix the problem. I was told maybe but it would depend if the Airport card was a new spec like the iMac.
Bottom line, I'm getting the feeling that .N technology is overrated for my needs and I really need to hard wire my connection to the internet to get the performance and consistency I need.
2 reasons I went to the .N Base Station:
1) Reliable connection (getting bumped on 2.4 ghz connection)
2) Hopefully a speed bump in connection speed over the net

Which video card to buy for Mac Pro and AE CS3

I am about to purchase a new Mac Pro and am curious which video card to buy - particularly when it comes to rendering speed.
Apple offers the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 as a standard option, with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 as a $150 BTO option.
I primarily use AE CS3 using adaptive resolution in lieu of Open GL. The projects are very 3d intensive. My initial thought is that the NVIDIA card has more VRAM and would be a better pick - but would my $$$ be better off toward more RAM? Does using CS4 make a difference?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. And yes, I have searched the forums but have not found anything definitive.

Personally, I'd buy more RAM. The standard display card supplied with the Mac Pro will have perfectly good specs for AE and Prem Pro.

USB 2.0 card for my 2011 Mac Pro. Reccomendations?

I need a USB 2.0 card for my 2011 Mac Pro desktop. Can anyone reccomend a product or what I need to look for (host interface etc) when searching for a suitable card?

Amazon UK then perhaps? OWC/Macsales is a good place to see what products they have as they are Mac primarily and support Mac Pro of course.
the products they have will list and of course they need to work in 1x as well as 4x.
Lion has been out a year, and unlike ML or early adopters most should or will but again, look and make sure it says 10.7.4, some may say 10.6 or later - have to ask.
You can also dig around and find what chip a product uses and is based on and then shop for similar chip based.
Can we assume you need more USB ports, or you have dead USB on the Mac and not for disk drives in which case USB3 or eSATA are better but USB3 has been iffy on Macs - now that Apple has some and some support in 10.8 while CalDigit card needed drivers for theirs.

It probably won't work. Some USB PCI cards will work out of the box with OS X even though the manufacturers don't specifically support it. This ad does not list the card manufacturer or chipset so it's very difficult to tell much about it. Furthermore it states that to modify the settings it requires a Windows-based Utility. Unless the seller has a good return policy I wouldn't buy it.

What graphics cards does the original Mac Pro support?

I am thinking about buying a used original 2007 Mac Pro. This Mac Pro would not come with a graphics card, so I am obviously responsible for finding one for it. I found a Radeon HD 5770 that I like on Newegg, and want to know if it would work with the Mac Pro. I really can't imagine it not, but don't want to toss a piece of hardware in my new machine that won't work.

Apple's 5770 $249 for now is the 'safe' but not best in price and whether you want to run OS X ____ ? limits you also, so unless you run 10.6.5 or Lion even the 5770 is out

Do video cards not supported on Mac, work in bootcamp under windows?

I have recently purchased and installed Battlefield 3 on my 2006 Mac Pro1,1, on the windows partition and it plays okay on extremely low settings. I am using the ATI 4870 card I purchase from apple a year ago. I want to play the game at higher settings and found a video card "Sapphire radeon 6970 hd" that can run the game at great settings and great frame per second. The problem is that the card doesnt work on Macs (like my ati 4870 does), so I was wondering if the card would work on my windows partition, even if it doesn't work on OS X. I would rather not have to buy a new PC. Thanks

I had already seen that site while googling, however I could not find information relating tom that specific card in my specific Mac. They had information about getting that card to work on OS x, bit it didn't mention if that worked with Mac 1,1. Also, I am only concned with whether it would work with the windows partition.

Will Graphics Card Help Aperture on Mac Pro?

I've been using Aperture for many years on a variety of Mac hardware. I have 5 or 6 image libraries, ranging in size from 50gb to 250gb. I have no referenced images, do not use "faces" or other CPU-intensive features, and often perform tasks which reportedly improve Aperture performance (deleting caches, repairing/rebuilding libraries, defragging hard drives. deleting prefs). While these tricks often result in a snappy experience on relaunch, Aperture returns to its sluggish ways after a few minutes of work.
My workflow is very simple -- I plug in my camera, download photos to the HD, and then edit them, which consists of adjustments such as exposure, white balance, sharpening, rotating, cropping. I don't do much retouching, red eye, or other fancy editing. Occasionally I use the "external" edit feature to retouch in Photoshop. I shot for many years with a Canon Rebel, 14MP I believe, and recently got a Nikon D800. I am finding the performance going through D800 raw files (not even editing, just flipping through them) unacceptable. For example, if I go to hybrid list/preview view, and press the "down" key 10 or 15 times, by the 5th image, there is a very noticeable lag, and often the display beachballs for 10 seconds or more before it gets to the bottom of the list. Basic tasks such as cropping or rotating often lock the display for long periods of time.
For many years, I blamed Aperture's awful performance on my hardware. I worked on a series of Mac laptops. Although I usually had the latest hardware, they were no desktop. Recently, I bought a Mac Pro with a 3.2GHz Quad-Core Xeon processor, 16GB of ram, an OWC SSD (for the system -- the libraries are on a 7200RPM drive), and a ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I was dismayed to find out that Aperture is STILL unbearably slow. If I can't simply flip through some photos on a top of the line Mac Pro, what is this program good for?
My question now is, would I see a significant performance gain if I were to upgrade yet again to a faster graphics card, such as the Radeon 7950? I've been reading up on these cards, and it seems like native support is coming in 10.8.3. While I hesitate to pour more money into my quest for a useable Aperture system, I wonder if this would finally show some significant performance gains. I've read conflicting reports from other users who've upgraded the graphics card. Is the advantage mainly for 3D or gaming applications or would this help Aperture too?

In the past Aperture has been very GPU-dependent. The very best G5 tower would bog on Aperture unless the stock GPU card had been upgraded. I expect current Aperture also to benefit from a stronger GPU but I do not have absolute info on that. And your existing 5770 is not a lame card.
I know 16 GB RAM seems like a lot, but with D800 files and an Aperture/Photoshop workflow you may still be paging out to disk. My Aperture/Photoshop workflow paged out at 8 GB RAM with files 1/3 the size of the D800 files.
You should evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM:
Look at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture/Photoshop work session and write the number down. Recheck the Page Outs count after working for a few hours and write the number down again. If the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved.
Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor because they are often misleading regarding RAM usage. For RAM analysis, count page outs.
If your test shows that page outs increase at all during operation you should add RAM. RAM is dirt cheap and use of additional RAM a very desirable characteristic for an Aperture/Photoshop workflow. If it was me I would double to 32 GB RAM and set PS (PS Preferences/Performance/Memory) to use 16 GB of RAM.
Hard drives slow as they fill so make sure none of your hard drives are overfilled. I suggest 70% full as an arbitrary maximum but even less full is preferable for speed. If your Library drive exceeds 60% full I suggest setting a RAID 0 array on two or more identical drives to get extra capacity and speed. Of course pay careful attention to frequent Library backup.
Some apps like browsers are notorious for "leaking" memory so when doing serious images work keep non-essential applications closed. A SSD drive for boot helps because when apps open in just 3 seconds there is no reason to keep extraneous apps open.

P.S. I strongly recommend that original images be fully backed up before importing into Aperture or any other images management application.
P.P.S. Makhe sure you have a properly set PS Scratch Disk assigned on a fast underfilled drive, and empty the scratch disk routinely.

Hi, found, what looks like an interesting upgrade to my 2008 MacPro video. This card works with Windows, UNIX and FreeBSD (the code from which is very much in MAc OSX).. Anyone tried this card with success (or otherwise)?

Let's assume you are running 10.8.3 as there is more support.
What did you have? what is your budget?
"work" can mean, there is no boot screen but once the system is loaded it does.
Will the output display ports work, it all depends on how close it is to the ATI reference design Apple uses.
Are you planning to flash it? there are site forums that can help recommend cards.
And if you work with CS6 and want to use Mercury Engine and have CUDA then you want nVidia GTX series.
I would see what Mac supported cards MacVidCards on ebay has.

PCIe card not detected by Mac Pro after a short while...

Hi guys,
Small problem... I bought a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro PCIe capture card. Installed it in PCIe slot 4 (the top most slot, as this is the recommended slot by Blackmagic), installed the drivers, rebooted, updated the firmware, rebooted and finally installed their capture software called Media Express.
The first time I tried to open Media Express, it kept coming up with a message saying, "The Blackmagic hardware can not be found in your system. Please check the installaion." So I shut down, waited a minute and restarted. Tried opening Media Express immediately after the computer booted and I was able to open it. Awesome! Or so I thought anyway...
After a short while, maybe an hour or so, I tried to open Media Express again. It gave me that same message. So I restarted my Mac, opened Media Express and all was good again, until an hour or so. This happens without fail every time I restart. It will open at first, then after a short while the Mac doesn't see the card anymore. It's not just with Media Express either. It happens with Flash Media Live Encoder as well. Except FMLE opens fine but doesn't see the card's inputs.
I contacted support. They told me to put the card in the next slot down. Same thing happens. So I sent the card back. They tested it for a whole day and a half. They haven't had a single problem with it. They told me it must be my set up. I have no idea what it could be though... Is it possible my PCIe slots in my Mac are faulty? My video card works fine, but that's in slot 1.
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Any feedback would be much appreciated as I'm going out of my mind right now. Things can never be as simple as they seem. There's always something that gets in the way.

the consensus seems to be that I need to boot in 32 bit and hopefully that will sort the problem...
about to try it...
strange thing is...it works in my old mac pro (which is currently set to boot default in 64 bit)

GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card advice wanted 2008 Mac Pro. Eight core desktop.

I have read some threads yet it is not clear to me if it is a good move to upgrade an Mac Pro eight core 3.1- 2008 to use GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card. I ask as my GeForce 8800 GT 2008 card has given up the ghost, and it has done sterling service R.I.P.. The machine is in the repair shop for a service itself, and this problem. So I thought an upgrade, as I am at it. Daunting choice out there. Um, learning curve and all that!
I mainly do 2D graphics, Canvas, Adobe stuff, yet a little amount of video, which may grow some. No games on this work horse!
So here I am fishing for experienced advice were my own is not, from anyone who has done this. Has it held up, do you get a boot screen, does it run two monsters easily via DVI.
If you have one or something good fitted please share the skinny!
For me it is turning into the year of the video card. My laptop looks like it got the disease first!

A new gpu is $5000 cheaper than an overhaul and new MP.
A 2008 though will never perform as well as later models. Ideal is 2010 or later.
Even a top of the line iMac with GTX if you are having a lot of trouble and thinking of ditching the 2008.

My question is can the Graphic Display cards be removed and replaced in the field by an experience Mac Technician?

Now here is the back, showing the heatsink paste still in place, and the thermal pads used to cool the RAM chips to the central cooler:
note that the two cards are not interchangeable -- they have their power lugs on opposite sides. One card has chips to support actual display output to the thunderbolt Busses, the other card has none, but has the custom micro-PCIE slot for the PCIe SSD "stick".
One reason for this design is that to make a leap forward, you would have to water-cool the slots for a traditional form-factor PCIe slot Mac pro. Then do it again to include a second GPU. In my opinion, this model Mac Pro is about conquering the cooling problem of this much CPU and GPU compute-power in one box.
NVIDIA graphics card replacements? maybe eventually, but not at this writing.

Raid Card Constantly Degrades Volumes - Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro with Raid card. I of course purchased hard drives separately, rather than apples inflated rate. I picked up four 750 GB Samsung F1 Raid (F1R) edition drives from OWC thinking it would work well with my system.
No matter what raid level I choose, within a day or two it says one of drives were removed and then it says replaced within 15 seconds, causing the entire raid set to be degraded. I believe it might just be these drives go into a lower power standby mode and aren't as responsive as the raid card wants them to be....hence it declares them "removed." This means no matter what I have tried I am constantly changing raid levels hoping one will fair better than another and wasting 10+ hours initializing and reinstalling.
Any hints, can I make the raid card less sensitive through firmware update or something? I'm kind of bummed I have these four nice drives and the best option seems to be use them as individual JBOD drives.

I had gone through this same process numerous times (though I was hoping for RAID 5). Apple officially says that they don't "support non-apple drives," though you would hope many work anyways. I believe my problem at least is probably due to the firmware on my hard drives not responding in the time frame the apple RAID card expects. So, I doubt your RAID card is faulty (though I greatly wish someone would post a solution to our problems).
After you give up trying to use RAID completely, you can erase all your RAID sets....select only one of the disks to create a set with, select the JBOD (Just a Bundle of Disks) mode. Repeat for all of your hard drives, create an individual volume on each, and install OS X. You will now be set up in a standard 4 separate hard disk mode with no RAID protection. However, you still utilize your RAID card so you get the added benefits of a large disk i/o cache (256 MB I believe) and a battery backup for your write operations. Not what I paid for but at least something that works. Be sure to set at least one of the disks for time machine to use as a backup (so you get something for data protection). Hope this helps, it took me awhile to decide to ditch RAID and think logically to get it working at least.

AirPort Extreme card not compatible with Mac Pro???

I recently purchased my Mac Pro without thinking to include any hardware for connecting to a wireless network.
I have recently moved into a new apartment which I am keen to join to a wireless network which has just been set up by my roommate for his PC and Laptop.
I was going to buy an AirPort Extreme card, but I have read that it is not compatible with the Mac Pro. Yet when I looked at the configure process for a new mac it was listed as one of the devises offered for wireless networking!!
I am very confused...
I was wondering if anyone could help me, i just need to know what hardware i will need and how it would be installed.

the mac pro takes a slightly different airport express card. you have to purchase it at the retail store and have them install it. in my experience they will not allow you to purchase one and install it yourself due to the difficulty of installing it. best thing to do take your macpro into a apple retail store and see what they can do.

Looking to upgrade graphics card on early 2009 Mac Pro

I'm a Final Cut Pro, Motion user looking to upgrade from the standard NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 on my early 2009 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro.
Between the ATI Radeon 5770 and 5870 which card is preferable for video work? Is the 5870 worth the extra money for what I do? Are both of these cards compatible with my machine?

In my usage experience, the current generation of Final cut studio doesn't benefit much from the jump from a 5770 to a 5870. Barefeats.com benchmarks back this up more or less.
I think in the long run, with GPGPU and push towards openCL, the 5870 is worth the extra $200 if buying a new mac pro -
if you are upgrading an old mac pro, you'd have to decide.
The 5770 will be so much faster than the GT120 running Motion, I know you would be content with that.

Graphics card from G4 to Mac Pro Can it be done?

You cannot use a PCI graphic card in a Mac Pro. Only PCI-Express cards may be used in the Mac Pro. The only graphic cards that you can use in the Mac Pro with OS X are those from Apple. Non-Apple provided cards will not contain the special EFI Boot ROM required to boot OS X. So the card from your G4 is not usable in the Mac Pro. However, the card that came with your computer supports dual monitors so there's really no need for a second video card.
