Which file format renders the fastest?

I'm a student and I'm editing variety of file formats and codecs like .wmv, .mp4 (h.264/aac), .mpeg, .mov, and others...
What project settings should I use to render or export these videos fast?
Or, if that is not possible...
What file format should I convert all the videos before editing?
(Like if you are using Final Cut Pro, you convert it to Apple ProRes422 first before you edit)
Thanks guys!

We have two i5 laptops. I ran some tests with intermediate CODECs (Cineform and Matrox).  In the case of HD footage it didn't help improve workflow or playback quality at all.  The bottleneck is the architecture of a laptop - they just can't move the data around fast enough.  CPU wasn't under much strain, GPU (Nvidia in our case) wasn't being taxed and 8GB of RAM should be plenty for basic editing.  Ours fly editing DV and do OK with HDV but full HD is just beyond reach for more than a couple of streams or any kind of keying.  We do have MXO2 Max units and also eSATA drives attached - the 1st gen i5 systems with Nvidia GPUs are plenty powerful for SD and simple HD jobs.  Encoding the Matrox is fast to H.264 - which is great for BD, Vimeo, iPad etc.  The reason you see variations in decoding and transcoding speed is that codecs vary in complexity. Many are designed for distribution rather than editing OR in the case of AVCHD (and other Mpeg4 variants) highly compressed to save space/bandwidth. As such they need a lot of computing grunt to decode them.  Laptops definitely have limited architecture compared to most desktops. Think of them as having a good engine and tyres but a lousy gearbox.

  • Which file formats does the Bridge Output Module (Web Gallery) support?

    I've searched all over but can't seem to find a list. I'm hoping it supports video, but can't seem to find a format that works. I know it exports Flash, but which import formats does it support?
    FWIW, I'm still on CS4 but have access to CS5.5 if need be.
    Thanks

    Hello, according to the help file, it is html, flash, and PDF: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WSe851854fd1e0856a-4b08a77612477f69f15- 8000.html

  • CG36 - Import report - No file format in the key file?

    Hi all,
    Transaction CG36: .Key files are successfully checked by u2018Check directoryu2019 in transaction CG36. The second step is the import process. The Import shows u2018greenu2019 successfully. But the Job description shows the following message:
    No file format in the key file test.key
    Number of errors: 0
    Job Finished:
    More details:
    No file format in the key file test.key
    Message no.C114
    Diagnosis:
    No entry for the document file type was found in the key file test.key
    System response:
    The report for the key file test.key is not imported.
    Procedure:
    Ensure that a document category is entered in the key file test.key
    TEST.KEY - Key file structure:
    CPN=TEST
    DTY=SDB
    SID=000000000492
    PRN=TEST PROD
    CTY=GB
    LAC=E
    STA=V
    DAT=19.03.1996
    FNA=1.PDF
    FTT=PDF
    During the report import (CG36, Dok-X), the workstation application is defined using the FFT entry in the key file, as displayed above, the key file as FTT=PDF defined correctly.
    We have processed the customizing settings which are required and described under: Report Import: Check Additional Settings (under EH&S u2013 Product Safety > Interfaces > Import and Export > Basis Settings for Import and Export).
    Is anybody familiar with the issue: No file format in the key file?
    What do I do wrong? Is the above Key file structure incorrect?
    Is configuration in SAP DMS required?
    Thank you in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Roy Derks

    Hello Roy
    my assumption would be: there is a typing error in the key file. If the content of the key files is like what you have published you must use in the key file
    FFT=PDF
    and not
    FTT=PDF.
    No further information is necessary and the other data seems to be perfect.
    With best regards
    C.B.
    PS: if necessary my be you could check DMS customizing. By standard EH&S implemenation a document type "IBD" should be there whiich is used for e.g. pdf file.
    PPS: I have no idea why the reimport check does not show up this issue.

    trying to copy a 10gb file to a memory stick but there's an error msg, file to large for the file format of the stick. is there a way around this

    If you use 'Disc Utility' you can format the stick (this will erase its contents) to be exFat which will still work with Mac and Windows but allow a larger file sizes to be placed onto the stick.
    Disc Utility > Click the drive on the left > Erase (tab) > Change format to ExFat > Erase > Try putting the file on to the stick again.

    Which file formats are supported bij iPhoto?
    Where is this kind of info written?

    There is no comprehensive list released by Apple that I am aware of.
    Here is what the help menu says: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/8.0/en/6303.html
    For best results I stick to JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF which are fairly universal standard formats.
    If you are working with RAW here is a list of supported RAW cameras: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825
    Was there a particular format you were trying to use?

  • MAC OSX 10.9.5: What is this strange file format in the Open Dialog box?

    Hello all.
    I'd never really noticed this, but I saw a rather unusual file format in the Open dialog box and was wondering why it appeared as it did. It appears as follows from the file/open dialog box:
    To be completely transparent, I'd originally posted this image on my twitter feed to @illustrator. Since then I have been in communication with Scott but the advice has been to reinstall Illustrator. If this had happened on one machine, I'd be inclined to agree that this may do something, but since discovering this unusual format, i've since seen it on six macs running OS 10.9.5 and illustrator version 18.1.0 OR 18.1.1
    Can anyone else confirm that they see the same thing; or if there is a difference, what this format is meant to actually be. I suspect this is a bug but need confirmation by other users.
    Colin

    The error occurs on all machines I have tested. 5 of the machines have the suitcase fusion auto-activation plug-in, but one had no plug-ins at all. All software was installed literally "out of the box" from the creative cloud.
    UPDATE - tested 3 more machines in the office all running 18.1.1 on OSX 10.9.5 and they ALL do the same thing, all installed with the suitcase fusion auto-activation plug-in, but otherwise installed "out of the box" from creative cloud.

  • Multiple File formats of the same Video

    I currently have two files for movies. One file is for my Apple TV the other is for my iPad/iPhone. Is there any way to filter the iPad/iPhone versions so they are not selectable on Apple TV?
    The only solution I can think of is making two libraries, but that seems overly complex for a simple request.

    - We need an Illustrator script that takes an AI file and spits out an .eps, .jpg (for print), multiple .png sizes for web, and .pdf.
    I personally don't recall seeing such a script that does all those things simultaneously, however you can find examples of each (like the few you have already discovered) as a starting point for creating such a script. If you search, here or elsewhere along with reading the scripting documentation and the examples provided in there you should find everything you need to get started and accomplish such a script.

  • How do I use "Generate" to produce multiple file formats from the "Default" layer?

    I have a Photoshop file with ~50 layers, each with unique file names for images I want to create.  I want to produce in both .png and .svg file formats for each layer.
    Rather than adding the code to each layer individually can multiple file formats be assigned on the "Default" layer? What is the correct syntax to do that?
    Something like:
    default  100% .png, svg/ *.svg
    ... to generate the .png versions and then also create a folder called "svg" that contains all the .svg versions of those images?

    Dear Thomas,
    I entered TM and found the sparsebundle under the Filesync library. However, it appears NOT to be recoverable and I tried double clicking on it but it doesnt do anything other than show a summary of what it is.
    By the way, I really do appreciate your comments and agree completely. Something strange happened with my syncing of Idisk (which is set to "automatic"). It has been working fine for years. But for some reason, it stopped two days ago and did not let me know. When I tried to put something manually on it (through drag/drop), it never showed up on the Idisk on the cloud which made me notice and check it out by going to Mobileme through the browser. I then went to the tech service for Idisk and they explained that something probably got corrupted so just hit STOP syncing and then hit Automatic again. Which is what I did. Then everything from the cloud went to my Idisk on my computer and for some reason, the latest version of my excel spread sheet for attendance showed two days ago, not last night. so I lost wed/thursday classes. I KNOW it was on my Laptop which is backed up to TM every morning.. Thats why I believe that the latest file IS on my TM backup for this morning. But I can't get to it. Any other help would be appreciated.

  • Regarding the File Format on the application server

    Hi,
    I would like to know the file format (ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32) of the file placed on the application server in my program. Can anyone help me with the Function Module or Class or any other way which will retrieve this information.
    Thanks

    Hi
    You can try the standard class CL_ABAP_FILE_UTILITIES and the method
      CALL METHOD cl_abap_file_utilities=>check_utf8
        EXPORTING
         file_name = filename
        IMPORTING
         bom       = file_bom
         encoding  = file_encoding.
    Check the possible values returned by encoding and BOM:
    NO_BOM
    BOM_UTF8
    BOM_UTF16_BE
    BOM_UTF16_LE
    ENCODING_UTF8
    ENCODING_7BIT_ASCII

  • Selecting which software opens which file format

    Hi,
    Hoping theres a solution to this but fearful there isnt. It seems everytime I add a new program to my laptop, somewhere deep down in the OS it is stepping in & changing previous settings on what app opens what file format.
    For example, I added the VLC player to play AVI video clips but now it has changed all the icons to my wmv files so they no longer open with windows media player when you click on them, now it opens the VLC player.
    And I just added a flac convertor app to convert flac to aac for iTunes, but now all the aac files it creates have VLC icons, so instead of double clicking on them & having them open in iTunes, they now open that stupid VLC player. The only alternative is to literally drag & drop into the app icon, which is a headache every time.
    It's not just the VLC player, its Real Player, Adobe Acrobat, & other apps that do it too.
    Back in the recent years, there used to be a system pref where you could choose a file extension (ex - tiff) and choose what program you wanted to open it (ex - Photoshop). I have looked everywhere in Snow Leopard for something like this but can't find it.
    How do I step in front of these apps that come in & try to take over?
    Thanks
    Duane

    Hi Duane,
    there used to be a system pref where you could choose a file extension (ex - tiff) and choose what program you wanted to open it (ex - Photoshop).
    There still is, just choose the file and "Get Info" (command-i), then under "Open with" choose the app, You can also click on "Change All".
    It sounds like VLC player is the culprit. download Perian it works through QuickTime.

  • How to display Doc file format in the JEditPane?

    At this time , JEditPane supports RTF and HTML file format ,but
    Could anyone tell me how to display DOC file format using JEditPane
    or other JTextComponents?
    Thx a lot!
    Caton

    Hi,
    there is no support for doc files (M$ Word?) in Java. You would have to create your own classes for that eventually subclassing JEditorPane, EditorKit, Document etc. As well you'd need your own reader for the doc format.
    The problem I see with that however is that there is nothing such as thedoc file format. Microsoft just saves anything produced by MS Word into files ending with .doc. But, if there is anything such as a .doc file format, it changes more often than the weather in April.

  • Epub file format for the nook

    I recently put a book for sale on Barnes & Noble. I used InDesign to create the file, using the paragraph & character styles for formating. When I placed the file everything looked good in the preview including the bold subheads so I published. On the Nook all of the bold formatting is gone. All the other formatting in the book (italics & bolditalics) turned out fine. I have other books with the same formatting I want to put out there but I would like to resolve this issue first. Can you give me any suggestions as to what went wrong or how I can correct this in the future? I posed the question to barnes & noble with no response. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Impossible to say without seeing the code. What I can tell you is that manual formatting is lost. Only styles make it through.
