Which files may be deleted when cleaning MacBook disk?

My MacBook has been running slowly so I'm trying to use "Sponge" to clean-up my MacBook disk. Sponge tells me which files are the biggest "disk hogs," but it does not tell me which files are okay to remove. I'm a novice at this and I don't want to delete anything that could mess up my system. Thanks in advance for any help!

Do not delete any files that are in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto library is a SQL database and its structure and content must not be changed using the finder or outside programs

  • Which file/folder to select when using multiple libraries?

I've recently decided to split my library and my mom's library - but we still share a computer. And I'm not sure which file or which folder to say is the correct one for each library. For right now, each library is the same, but if I add a CD and she adds a different CD, we shouldn't be able to access each other's - and I'm trying to set it up so that doesn't happen.
Except I'm not tech savvy enough to do that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    tanner,
I don't have Vista in front of me, but on Win 7 you can set up a new account by Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove User Accounts > Create New Account.
Go ahead and create a new account and play with it a little.  It won't affect anything in the existing account.  When you feel comfortable, set up a new iTunes library in it.

  • Changing which files are opened automatically when opening a solution

When I open a solution, VS automatically opens various files in the editor.   There must be a configuration setting somewhere in the solution that tells VS which files to open but I'm unable to find that setting.  Anyone know where this setting
    can be found?

    It's in the .suo file.
If you have a Foo.sln then you will also have a (hidden) Foo.v12.suo file and that's where this information is stored.
The .suo is a binary file in an undisclosed format.
Solution User Options, I believe, is what .suo stands for.  (At least, that's what I say in my head when I see .suo.)
It's user-specific and machine-specific, and therefore not something that should be committed to your revision control system.

  • Created startup disc on a second ssd, which files do i delete off the original hd?

I did this little project back in April and kept the original startup files in case something went wrong. Everything is working fine and I want to trim storage space off the HD. Simply put I can't remember what files to delete.

Directly from toast 9 help menu:
You can add any QuickTime-supported video files, such as DV, AVI,
MOV, HDV (1080i/720p), and MPEG-4. You can also add files that
QuickTime doesn’t support such as iMovie HD projects, MPEG-2,
DivX, Eye-TV recorded shows, and TiVoToGoTM transfers.
To add an iMovie HD project, first save your project and quit iMovie.
Then add the saved iMovie project file into the Content Area. You can
also access your iMovie '08 library directly from the Media Browser
and drag them in to the Content Area.
Each group of photos you add into the Content Area appears as a
slideshow. Each slideshow will have a button in the disc menu that you
can choose to play the slideshow. You can duplicate, rearrange, remove
or edit slideshows. See Working With Slideshows on page96 for more
    information.
Each video you add into the Content Area will have a button in the
disc menu that you can choose to play the video. You can duplicate,
rearrange, remove or trim video. See Working With Videos on page98
    for more information.
You can duplicate a video and have different trim marks for each copy.
    To set chapter markers:
1 Select a video and click Edit, or double-click on any video.
2 Click the Video tab. Some video files may not have a Video tab.
3 Click the pull down Chapters menu and select one of the following:

None: Select this option to have no chapter markers on the disc.

Automatic: Select this option to use chapter markers set in
iMovie. This option also assigns chapters markers based on
scenes detected during Plug & Burn video import for DVD. See
Using Plug & BurnTM on page102.

  • HT1338 how do i update my macbook pro from 10.5.8 to the latest software? also please let me know what do i have to do to save my files from being deleted when updating? thank you

how do i update my macbook pro from 10.5.8 to the latest software?

First you have to purchase Snow Leopard, 10.6, from the Apple on-line store for $20.  Install and on-line software update from the disk version to the last of the line, 10.6.8.
Then determine if you can go to Mountain Lion, http://www.apple.com/osx/specs and if you can go to the App Store and purchase for $20 the download of 10.8.3.
If you cannot go to ML, see if you can go to Lion, 10.7.5, do you have an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor at least 2 GB ram and 7 GB free hard drive space.  If so you can purchase a download code for Lion from 1-800-MY-APPLE for $20.
If you can use Mountain Lion, skip the Lion step and go directly to ML.

  • What Garageband files can I delete when I only use Logic Pro?

My Mac's choc-full of Logic and GB files and I'd like to make some space.
I know Logic uses some GB loops, settings and other resources – and I may even have duplicates – but I don't know how to streamline it all.
Tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

In Logic, you can access GB's instruments, but you might not want them - so you can delete GB's Instrument Library (in HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand). Otherwise, there's not much to get rid of.
Look for duplicate loops here: HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops.

  • 'iTunes Library Extras' and 'iTunes Library Genius' files gets automatically deleted (when iTunes is started up)

I'm working on a Sony VAIO FW-serie model.
    Windows Vista
Almost every time I start up Itunes I have to determine that all my music is out of Itunes (still on the original locations but not available in my library).
    It happens automatically.
I looked in my 'recycle bin' folder and saw there were a lot of iTunes Library files.. (specifically the ones named in the title)
Can anyone help me with this problem because I always have to remove everything from my iPod because the library is 'refreshed'..
    Arne

    It's Sony's software: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2715
Download a newer version, configure it to ignore your iTunes folder or just disable it.

  • Empty Log files not deleted by Cleaner

    Hi,
we have a NoSql database installed on 3 nodes with a replication factor of 3 (see exact topology below).
We run a test which consisted in the following operations repeated in a loop : store a LOB, read it , delete it.
    store.putLOB(key, new ByteArrayInputStream(source),Durability.COMMIT_SYNC, 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
    store.getLOB(key,Consistency.NONE_REQUIRED, 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
    store.deleteLOB(key, Durability.COMMIT_SYNC, 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
During the test the space occupied by the database continues to grow !!
Cleaner threads are running but logs these warnings:

    Hi Sherrif,
After you have done support package import in all systems of the landscape I guess you can delete these files. Before that it may not be such a good idea. The document here gives the recommendation for data files at least:

    Thanks.

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. Also before I noticed the problem with mail deletion - two things happened. 1) I updated security sofware as prompted by Apple and 2) downloaded Mackeeper and went throught some preliminary scans but did not buy their package. Thanks forn nstaying with me.

  • When I delete a duplicate song, how do I choose which file to keep?

When I delete a duplicate song, how do I choose which file to keep?

What is reappearing is just the list entry with the indication that it is available for download - it's not taking up any space on your computer. You can remove it by control- or right-clicking it and choosing 'delete'.
The recent changes in iTunes have confused a lot of people. Here is a summary of the situation:
Only the most recent episode shows when you first subscribe. In the default  'My Podcasts' view click 'Old episodes' to show earlier episodes, click 'Done' to hide them or 'Add all' to keep them there and also add them to List view.
Alternatively, in 'List' view control- or right-click on the name of the podcast or the episode and choose 'Show old episodes' to reveal all the previous episodes.
In both views you can now delete both downloaded or un-downloaded episodes from both views by control- or right-clicking on the name of the episode.
In both views each episode now has a blue circle to the left showing it as unplayed. Each episode can be double-clicked to be played as a stream without downloading it first (so you don't have to wait for it to download fully). Click the cloud icon at right to download it (as you will have to to sync it to an iPod). Note that if you click the cloud icon to the right of the title of the podcast itself, rather than an episode, you will initiate a download of all episodes.

  • My 5 year old MacBook Air is telling me it "cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder.  Quit mail, delete files you don't need, then reopen mail."  What is "home folder," and which files to delete?

My 5 year old MacBook Air is telling me it "cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder.  Quit mail, delete files you don't need, then reopen mail."  What is "home folder," and which files to delete? Thanks.

The home folder is where all of your personal files are kept.
Best candidates to delete are movies, videos, music and photos since they generally take the most space.
Don't forget to empry the Trash after you delete the file because the space is not returned until the Trash is emptied.

  • My Macbook Air is sending a message saying my hard drive is almost full. What software is recommended to delete unused files and to delete duplicated files? Thank you.

What software is recommended to create space in my Macbook Air's hard drive?

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.

  • How can I delete the update installation files? Or which files are useless and safe to delete?

ThinkVantage System Update application will find the appropriate updates, download them and install them. This is convenient. But when it finishes the updates, it will not clean the installation files it has downloaded, which I think are not useful any more since the update installation is completed, right?
I think the update appliction stores the downloaded files in the folder: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\ ,   this folder of mine is over 1.32GB big now. But I just don't know which files and subfolders in it are safe to delete.
Or rather, the preload system occupies a large space on the disk. Which files are no longer used and safe to delete?
Would any experts help with this? Thank you very much!
    Norm

I've been experimenting. Now I figure it out. Automatic System Update downloads and stores files in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\ Sessions\, and in Sessions' subfolders, all files are not used once update is completed except those ending with .xml. Thus those unnacessary files are safe to delete.
This is what I find out so far.
    Continuing to experiment.
