Which filetypes does iMovie support?

I recently recorded some HDV footage (.M2T mpeg) for someone else to edit in iMovie. I added a soundtrack in Adobe Premiere on a PC and need to export it out. Should I convert it to something else?

You can change the permissions in Get Info.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:

To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

    iMovie was made to edit video shot on iOS devices; there is no support list, it was made to edit iOS video.
    This allows iMovie to be stable (or should make it stable as the case may be).
    That said, you are importing the video wrong, and may be in luck with your video.
    The File sharing pane is just for importing iMovieiOS projects.
    iMovie cannot edit video in the Movies app.
    iMovie edits video that can be seen in the photos app.
    So you need to import it via the photos tab, as you would photos.
    The other option is using the camera connect kit.
    If you can see the video in the Photos app, it is highly likely that you can edit it.
    But be warned that using non-iOS sourced video can make iMovie very buggy and flakey.
    Avid for iPad is made to edit more formats and might be a better choice if you have trouble.

    Any problems uploading GoPro Hero 2 MPEG4 files into a Macbook Pro?

    I am having huge problems with importing from my Hero 2 HD into iMovie 10.0.1.  It looks like the files import but then when I come back to iMovie I have a Missing Camera error over each file.  I find it hard to believe that Apple would not support the Hero 2.  I looked in the iMovie support area and searched for what GoPro iMovie does support and only the Hero 3 is listed.  Anyone else having trouble importing video or timelapse pictures from your Hero 2 or Hero 2 HD?  Very frustrating.  Fortunately, I did find that even after upgrading to Maverick, iMovie 9.0 is still in my applications folder under the iMovie folder.

    the problem is that if you have nothing but 4k XAVC clips in the card and you try to import from the Import window
    FCPX will not see the card as a Camera and only as a Volume. You cannot do Camera archives from a volume but you are able to do Camera Archives if it is detected by FCPX as a Camera.  The reason I like to do Camera Archives is that that way I transfer the whole content of the SD card in one pass to a container that I can transfer to any HD that is hooked up or connected to the computer usually avoiding the main or boot drive and I can bring that container or Archive into the Favorites column of the import window pf FCPX ,opened and start importing from there. This has two main advantages 1 Once I create the archive and have all my clips in its container I can wipe the card clean and start using it again, 2 If I placed it in the Favorites colum of the import window I can open it and start importing to FCPX as if it was any card, Also you can move this container or archive any where as long as it is connected to your computer and if you have finished and don't plan to use it anymore you can store it for keeps with all the original files you shot in any storage for keeps. You also preserve the file structure of the SD card  That is why I need FCPX to recognize the SD card as a CAMERA AND NOT AS A VOLUME when using 4K XAVC-S clips.  The way you are doing it may be ok up to a point only for a few clips here and there but if you're preserving or making a Movie of you vacation or other events that would be an Immense task.
    The Sony AX-100 camera that you have has the same file structure that the AX-33 if you import nothing but 4K XAVC-S clips without mixing mp4 or AVCHD ON THE SAME CARD Have you found the same problem????

    Yes, Maybe and No.  For iMovie '11, the answer is spread across a number of support responses and in the details of the technical requirements of the related products.
    Yes.  It appears that if you keep the SD card in the camera and direct connect it to your Mac you may import and it will allow you to select the clips (as shown in the iMovie '11 import video -- Artcile VI104).  (But see notes below under Maybe and No.)
    Maybe.  If you don't have the camera anymore, but you can copy the entire directory structure of the SD card over to a drive and copy it to a disk image then you should be able to import using an import command and choose the mounted disk image.  (But see note below under No.)
    No.  If your resolution is set too high for iMovie then it will not import.  For example, using the disk image workaround I was able to get iMovie to show that clips were present, but it would not allow importing because they were originally done at 60p (Panasonic SD90 1080p).  The clip import window (as shown in Article VI104) shows different clips, but they show up as black with red "no" line across them with a "60."
    If you want to import then make sure your resolution and frame rate is supported by iMovie.
    The other options seem to be:
    Buy a software transcoder specific to the purpose of converting .mts file to some other format for iMovie.
    Transcode via Handbrake or Toast (results were not great in my opinion).
    Toast workaround.  Create a DVD image in Toast and mount and import the image.  This works great.  There is a video on YouTube for it.  The one problem is that Toast will break large clips into smaller DVD files.  It did not seem to lose data, but now one large clip was three our four smaller ones and the time/date data was lost.  You have to reorder them in iMovie.  Quality was fine.  Time needed was OK.  Workflow was awful because of the larger clips being split.
    Rewrap the .mts file in something iMovie can handle.  Seems to work fine and is the quickest so far.  There are pay-for wrappers and free wrappers/automator files available.

    I'm interested in shooting in HDV and cut it on FCP. But there seems to be 2 different types of HDV from Sony, and JVC. I'm quite confused:
    1) Which one can be cut on FCP.
    2) Can it be output to any deck such as Digibetacam?
    3) Can it be input or output to a deck by component, S-video or composit? Will it lose quality?
    4) does FCP support the new Panasinic P2 camera?
    5) Fianlly, is there any different between the Sony & JVC HDV's, both in cameras and in Decks (if there's any)?
    I'm leaning towards the JVC HDV. But if FCP does not support it, I'll have a problem.

    1) FCP mainly supports the Sony format, but also supports the JVC format, although ONLY the 720p30 setting, not 24p. You can also use HDVxDV to convert the footage to "I" frames, which I hear is a decent way to cut HDV.
    2) Yes, but only if you have a capture card. Outputting to digibeta will always require a capture card. And you will have to render your HDV footage in an SD sequence...as Digibeta is an SD format.
    3) Yes, it can. This is probably the better way to import HDV footage, IMHO. With the use of an HD capture card, you can import HDV in a different HD format which is easier to work with. Lose quality, yes, some quality will be lost, but nothing you'd notice.
    4) It supports the DVCPRO HD format, but as of yet there isn't a card reader for the P2 cards designed for the Mac yet. That will be remedied soon. But hey, the camera isn't even OUT yet, so patience man!
    5) Yes, there is a difference. They record different flavors of HDV. Sony and Canon record using a long GOP (group of pictures) and JVC uses a short GOP.
    If you lean towards the JVC, only shoot 720p30 if you intend on editing with FCP, or get an HD capture card and plenty of high speed storage if you want to capture it in a different HD format.

  • Does iMovie support Panasonic DVR-D300 mini RAM disc camcorder?

    The camcorder manual indicates that Mac OS X 10.4 is the last one supported by iMovie. Is there an up-date available for v.10.5.2 and up?

    Forest brings up a good point. What type of media (DVDs) are you using? The D300 supports DVD-R, but I use DVD-RAM. It might appear different to your Mac depending on which format you use. If you've recorded onto DVD-R in Video mode, then you will need to finalize the disc as Forest says. From that point it will be viewable in a regular DVD player as well as on your Mac. There is free software available called mactheripper which will rip videos from DVDs for you (whether from your camcorder or regular DVDs), and from that point it's the same procedure with ffmpegX to convert them to DV for use in iMovie.
    I know this is a lot of hassle, but once you get your workflow down it'll be easy for you.
    Since we do seem to be the only ones using the Panasonic DVD camcorder, and you want to use iMovie and I have been successfully, I'll let you know how my workflow goes. First, I use DVD-RAM discs in the camcorder in VR mode. This allows you to erase and reuse the discs once the footage is safely on your Mac. When a disc gets full, I connect the camcorder to my Mac with the USB cable and turn it on. The camcorder's power cable must be plugged in (not running on the battery). Then I open the Pixe VRF Browser software and select the DVD-RAM device from the drop-down menu. It ejects the disc and asks you to reload it. Weird, I know, but you'll get used to it. Then it scans the disc and shows thumbnails of all the clips. I highlight all the clips and use the copy function to get them to my Mac. I store all the clips in their original MPG format and only convert to DV the clips I want to use in iMovie.
    Let me know if you have more questions. Remember, once you get it to work once it'll be easy for you.

    .m2ts usually comes from AVCHD, which is beyond the capabilities of MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro to convert. (AFAIK)
    You will most likely need a third party converter such as Voltaic HD.
    If you have a supported camera and connect it directly, you do not need this, but if you have the loose files out of context, Voltaic is a good solution.

    I've been covering the photo industry as a journalist for over 14 years and frequently deal with Sony. I never said they don't make some good products, but that they always do things their own way and have NEVER made much of an effort to support the Mac community.
    It is very sad that as a new Mac user, it
    seems like I have to use the PC to import the clips
    and then use Mac to do the editing. So is it possible
    that Mac new Operating system will provide certain
    software or driver for SONY MicroMV videocam in the
    near future?
    I certainly doubt it based on past experience. BTW, it's up to Sony to supply the necessary drivers to make things work on a Mac (or some third party) - Apple doesn't do this. Since Sony sells PC format computers, they don't seem to have any reason to do so.
    I suppose you could buy a new Intel Mac and also install Windows - then you could use the Sony supplied software to get the video into your computer.
    There are plenty of great camera choices that DO work with the Mac.
