Which Firewire cable to buy?

I need to buy a firewire cable for my new iMac. I have a Sony FX1E camera which uses a 4 pin Firewire I think!.
Which Firewire cable do I need - there are so many different ones in PC World.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The iMac has a 9 pin Firewire port, so you would need a 4 pin to 9 pin cable. I would check with the camera manufacturer because the camera may require a special cable that they manufacture that prevents the iMac from sending to much wattage and burning out the camera.

  • Which FireWire Cable for Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro Migration Assistant?

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro 15" (standard - not retina display) and am planning to transfer my files via the Migration Assistant. My question is, I currently have a mid 2009 macbook pro (2.8GHz, 4GB) and was wondering which firewire cable I need to purchase - there are so many different types!
    Thanks!

Hold T and boot the old Mac's drive to the desktop of the new one or do so during Setup Assistant or later with Migration Assistant.
Setup Assistant runs only once, at first startup when fresh out of the box or when freshly reinstalled from scratch. Migration Assistant is a regular application found in the Utilites folder.
If you're going to move all your stuff over, the easiest and least problematic way is via Setup Assistant. Since the computer is in a completely blank state when SA runs, it can create identical user accounts, permissions, etc., as the original source. MA is an app that runs on an already configured and running system and, hence, can't duplicate user accounts, modify permissions that are already in use, etc.: this can cause vexing issues for new users that may not be to well versed in multiuser operating system administration.

  • Which Firewire Cable to Connect Drobo S to 24" Early 2009 iMac? Thank you.

    Hello Support Communities,
Which Firewire cable do I need to connect a Drobo S to a 24" early 2009 iMac?
    Firewire 800? Firewire 400? 8 pin? 9 pin? 6 pin?
    Thank you.

The iMac has Firewire 800 it is a 9 pin connector as shown…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Firewire800.jpg
Wikipedia also says the Drobo S has Firewire 800 & USB2
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drobo
A Firewire 9 pin to Firewire 9 pin cable should be fine, otherwise you could use USB2 but it is slower & less reliable than FW 800 in my opinion.

  • "Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?"

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

  • Which Firewire Cable for my MacPro?

I was just about to connect my new external HD to my MacPro, but found out that the Firewire cable doesn't match my MacPro.
When I did a search for buying Firewire 800 cables, three different types showed up! Which Firewire 800 cable to I need for my MacPro 2.93GHz?

There is only one FW800 cable type used by your MP. It's a 9-pin nearly square connector. If you have a cable with a 6-pin rectangular shaped connector, then that is a FW400 cable.

  • What Firewire Cable to buy?

    hi,
does anyone know what firewire cables work with isight? in order with the firewire cable adaptor, the thingy which holds the cable and plugs into the isight? i would like to use a cable which is about 5-6 meters.
    thankful for any tips.
    alex

    Hello Alex,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
the problem with most 3rd party FW cables is, that they don't fit into the isight cable holder thingy.
In addition to the suggestions others have offered here, you can get cables from your Apple VAR, Apple Store, or from the Apple web site. Several choices are available from Apple.
If you buy from an Apple retailer, he can find the correct items for you. For web ordering, as of this date:
]The 1.8m replacement for the cable that came with my iSight.
    ]The short (0.5m / 19 inches) version.
iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions also lists a replacement
    b FireWire Cable Adapter
    - current price: $6.25 US, but I cannot locate the part number. Your Apple retailer can help you.
    <hr>
so the task would be to find either a FW cable that matches the apple FW cable plug, or to find a ""connector" which would connect a 3rd party FW cable with a white apple one.
You can buy the entire iSight Accessory Kit, which includes both the cable
    b AND adapter
    as well as replacement mounts.

  • Which firewire cable do I need?

I have a imac g4. I am unsure if the firewire port on the back of my machine has 4 or 6 pins. It looks like it has 4. I need to know how many pins should be on each end of my firewire cable based on my particular imac. This firewire cable will be connecting to an external hard drive that supports both 6 pin 400 and 9 pin 800 firewire.

4-pin FW ports are very small. You see them on video cameras and such. You're most likely to have a 6-pin FW 400 port - looks like a rectangle with one corner flattened.
    To be sure, go here:
    http://www.everymac.com/
where you can get a detailed spec for your iMac.
I just had a quick look, and all the iMac G4 FP specs I saw said FW 400 ports, which will be six-pin

  • Which Firewire cable to use

I have an iMac and a Macbook. I need to transfer applications & files from the Macbook to the iMac. I guess I should use Migration Assistant, but don't know what Firewire cable to use...4 pin, 6 pin, etc. Thanks

Sorry to butt in, butt I bought a firewire cable because I now own two macs. I wanted to transfer photos from the Imac to the Macbook. I started the transfer process, however, I might be confused as to what I am really transferring. It was asking me about which applications I wanted to transfer and which user accounts. ?? Then, does all this information delete from my Imac? Help!!

  • Which Firewire Cable to connect an iMac and a Mac mini ???

    Hi guys
What Firewire cable should I buy to connect an iMac G5 and a Mac mini G4 and use a partition on the mini as a Target Disk?
    I've read something about 4 pin, 6 pin, 9 pin... 400, 800
I have no idea what type of cable I have to buy and if it makes different about performance...
    Cheers!

No, you need a FW400 6-pin to 6-pin cable and they are all the same. FW800 has an entirely different connector and neither the iMac nor the mini have it. It might be called IEEE1394 or iLink on the package, but it is all FireWire 400 in stores generally. I have never seen a FW800 cable in a regular retail store.

  • Which firewire cable for new MacBook Pro and Canon HV20?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to transfer video from my Canon HV20 camcorder (using FinalCut Express). The Canon instructions say to use a "DV cable" and I've learned that the MacBook Pro only has an "800 fire wire" port. Can someone give me the exact type of cable that I should get (even my local Apple Store couldn't help me).
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that the folks at the Apple Store couldn't guide you. You just need a firewire cable with the proper fw400 connector on one end and a fw800 connector on the other. Here's one source for both cables and adapters:

  • Which Firewire Cable?

I am using a late 2008 model macbook pro, 15 inch. I just ordered a new 27 inch iMac. Which type of cable do I need for target disk mode?

    Hi,
both Macs have a Firewire800 port.
So a 9pin-to9pin-cable like this for example http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B99012/ (of acceptable length for you) is neccessary.

    Hi Jimm,
To connect your camera to a television that has RCA inputs, we recommend the
    Stereo Video Cable STV-250N cable.
We recommend the HTC-100 Mini-HDMI Cable to connect to a television via with an HDMI input.

  • Which firewire to buy?

I have a new iMac, i am trying to work out which firewire cable i should buy to transfer files from my macbook (15inch). I don't know how many pins are in the macbook socket and how many are in the iMac.

Alan ~ Welcome to the Support Communities. Click on the  menu and choose "About this Mac". In the resulting panel, click on "More Info...". In the resulting window, if necessary, click on the Hardware disclosure triangle. Then click on Firewire — the speed (400 or 800 Mb/sec) implies the type of cable you'll need, e.g.
And this free Mactracker app also provides such info, e.g.

I need to know which apple cable to buy so that I can present a keynote presentation from the iPad onto a projector. Does it work with VGA, composite, or component. I have the iPad 1.

I have tried the composite and works fine. The iPad will show a secondary screen during the slide show when the cable is conected, you will notice the play icon will change. I have tried it with two different projectors and one TV.

  • Firewire compatibility/Which cable to buy

I have a MBP with FW 400 and FW 800 ports and I currently have a firewire 4 pin to 4 pin cable from my previous computer. Wikipedia (maybe not the most reliable) says "A FireWire 800 socket is backward-compatible with 4-pin, but not 6-pin, FireWire 400 plug." I don't really know what this means because the 4 pin plug doesn't seem to actually fit in the FW800 port.
Should I just buy a 9 pin to 4 pin cable, or is there some sort of adapter that I can buy? Will hooking up my 3 year old Sony Handycam to the FW 800 port work faster than the 400 port, or does the hardware specifically need to support FW 800?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can buy a Firewire cable with a FW800 connector on one end and a FW400 (6 pin) connector on the other. Macs use 6 pin Firewire ports. 4-pin FW400 connectors are not the same as FW800.
Although you can connect a FW400 drive to a FW800 port with the proper cable, but it won't run any faster than FW400.
