Which flash Drives support OS X Mavericks

which flash drives support OS X Mavericks

Virtually any flash drive, thumb drive, or whatever you want to call them will work with Mavericks if they have a USB or even Firewire interface. As far as I know, all of them will come formatted FAT or ExFAT and Mavericks can read and write to FAT or ExFAT volumes. Personally unless there is a necessity for compatibility with Windows boxes I generally reformat mine to Mac OS Extended (journaled) for full feature compatibility with the Mac, but that is just me.

What expresscard flash drives support sleep ?

    Hi patrick,
I can't give you a direct answer, but have a look at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/express34cardreports.html in which a great many cards are commented on. THose doing so were specifically asked to mention any sleep behaviour, either good or bad, and many of them have done so.
Not all the cards are "flash" drives, of course (most, in fact are for eSata interfaces) , but it provides a very valuable compendium of information about user experiences with a variety of brands and models.
Well worth a look and may give you a few other things to ponder, too.
    Cheers

  • XMLType, TopLink 1013dp3r2 = which JDBC driver supports XMLType?

I'm using the oracle thin driver 10.1.0.4 and getting this exception when reading an XMLType column that is mapped to a string:
[exec] Exception Description: The object [oracle.sql.OPAQUE@f63c6a], of class [class oracle.sql.OPAQUE], could not be converted to [class java.lang.String].
    [exec] Internal Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException
    [exec] at oracle.toplink.exceptions.ConversionException.couldNotBeConverted(ConversionException.java:59)
    [exec] at oracle.toplink.xdb.DirectToXMLTypeMapping.getAttributeValue(DirectToXMLTypeMapping.java:122)
Reading the forum, it seems like only certain drivers support XMLType but doesn't mention which ones.
Which JDBC drivers will get rid of this error?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm not using TopLink at all.
Right now i'm just letting the oc4j load ojdbc14dms.jar through the shared-lib "oracle.jdbc". Although now i'm gettting ClassNotFounds with XMLType because it's not in the same classloader as oracle.sql.OPAQUE. XMLType is loaded though the application classpath.
I've added some more details on this post.

  • Where to buy a bootable Mavericks disk or flash drive

Well I wanted to create a slide show of a trip to Italy and was tired of having to relearn Lightroom so the fellow at the Apple store showed me how "easy" it is to use iPhoto and Keynote in combo. I was swept away and bought a Mac Mini-i7 with Mavericks. I created the slide show with 275 slides and it still was not easy but doable. Now the other shoe fell and I discovered you cannot create a send-to list in Mail by double clicking names in the address panel. The Apple telephone helper told me I would have to go back to Mountain Lion to get double click addressing. So I bought a like new used Mac-mini-i5 with Mountain Lion for daily use and that is working nearly OK. You still have to click on the Address Panel choice under Window to get to the point you can do double click addressing in Mail but that is just a minor annoyance. So I have set up the i7 for gaming and other high speed things. However, because of the new Apple policy I do not have a DVD with a bootable OS on it for either Mavericks or Mountain Lion. I have been using Apple products since the 90s and I have never been without a disk to boot up or to call up disk utility. So I do some research and there is a procedure to build a flash drive or DVD bootable disk image. This is a procedure that reminds me of the Windows procedures to change the security configuration on a typical PC. You do not want to go there. So the question is: Is there a software package you can acquire to create a bootable flash drive or DVD with Mavericks  or Mountain Lion image? Surely there is an entrepreneurial soul out there that will do this for a fee.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I thought the use of Diskmaker recommended by Barney-15E was solving my problem but it did not despite attempts at building three install disks, one for each of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite. In all cases at a point near completion there was an error that failed the process. However I found an alternate procedure using DiskUtility. With this program one uses the Restore tab and places the appropriate InstallESD.emg file for the OS of choice in the Source Space in the DiskUtility window. Then the Icon/Label for the target drive (in my case a flash drive) is placed in the Destination Space. Then click the Restore command in the bottom right of the DiskUtility window. The minimum partition for each of the operating systems is 8GB. Each process takes as much as a half hour but all were successful.
Many thanks to all who helped.

  • How and where can i get an os installer file to copy to a flash drive

I replaced a bad hard drive for a friend and need an os to copy to a flash drive cause her cd/dvd is not working

You purchase the OS, then clone it to the flash drive like here. If we knew what OS you were planning to use, then we could be more specific about what to do.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
       3. Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

  • Has anyone been able to create a Mavericks clean install flash drive?

like David Pogue explains in his book OSX Mavericks The Missing Manual on age 792. He tells how to create a Homemade Installer of Mavericks so one could wipe their hard drive and install a clean copy of Mavericks. I've followed the instructions religiously and have yet to end up with a usable startup flash drive. Though I name the flash drive something recognizable, when it finishes copying the Install OS X Mavericks from my applications folder it has the name OS X Install ESD rather than the name I assigned "Cruzer_Mavericks_Startup" which confuses the system. Inside is a folder labeled "Packages." This flash drive will not startup my iMac. Help if you can.

  • Can I Install Mavericks Fresh Without USB Flash Drive?

I have a dual SSD+HDD setup and want to do a fresh install of Mavericks. Do I need to produce a USB key like I've done with Lion and M.Lion? Or is there a way to install the OS from iCloud? Can I reboot holding Option key, format both drives and install Mavericks to the main drive from iCloud?

    groberts1980 wrote:

You don't need to, but that would be the best solution for multiple installations. iCloud is not an option.
The easiest way to create a bootable USB flash drive Mavericks installer is to download and use Lion Disk Maker: http://liondiskmaker.com/?p=189
It is an AppleScript that performs tasks you can do for yourself using Disk Utility, only less tedious.
Read the developer's notes before using it. Despite its name it has been recently updated to support Mavericks.

  • HT4106 Will this thing support if I connect external HDD's or Flash drives to watch movies or transfer photos?

I'm very interested in purchasing this accesory for my camera but I would like to maximize it's usage. I wanna know if the camera connector (via the usb port) will support if I connect, say, flash drive or external hdd. I want to know if I can watch movies directly from the hdd/flash drive instead of buying an app to stream

Theoretically you can put movies and videos onto an SD card, satisfy the naming requirements - all files in a DCIM folder and with a name of exactly 8 characters. Then you can use the photo app to import that video file onto your iPad, watch it and delete it.
Does require that you have the room to import....so it's not perfect but it does work.
but if you want to watch a lot of movies and video files, the seagate is probably the best way to go since you can keep tons more than what fits on a 4-32 gig card (which start to get pricey after a bit)

  • USB flash drive on Mavericks

I have a probelme using a USB flash drive on Mavericks. It worked O.K before, but it is no longer recognized. For the past several months, I used it with Windows computers at work without a problem and now need to work on projects using my own computer (Mavericks). Please help.

Was the drive encrypted using a JAMF policy?  If not, I do not believe so.  While I have not supported the encryption of external drives, I will use an experience to support my response.
I had a user who was granted admin rights (why, I don't know).  The user enabled FileVault via our policy.  Then the user perceived the FileVault was causing problems so the users disabled it and decrypted the drive.  Then, once the user realized that they would probably get in trouble for this, then manually enabled it.  So while my smart group shows FV is enabled, my decryption key stored in the JSS does not match that on the unit.
I would suggest investigating a method of providing a self-service policy for external drives.  Once again, in all my JAMF deployments, I have not had the requirement of encrypting external drives.

  • If i use a usb flash drive which is both os and windows compatible can i transfer files from my mac to a windows pc using the same usb flash drive?

if i use a usb flash drive which is mac os and windows compatible can i use it to copy files from the mac to a windows machine. i have to do some training abroad and wnat to take the files on a usb from the mac but they will only have a windows operating system available to me.

Generally, it's not the flash drive that makes it compatible, but the formatting used on it.  In Disk Utility on a Mac, the format is called MS-DOS (FAT).  In Windows, I believe it is called FAT32.
A USB flash drive formatted that way should be readable and writable on both Mac OS X and Windows.  But you may want to try a "trial run" before relying on it for the trip.

I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.
