Likely someone does but Apple has not stated if/wehn.

Then don't use the repair program unless you are actually having an issue.

  • What is the correct procedure for repairing permissions

I am getting ready to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. I have used the disk utility to repair permissions after an upgrade or hardware addition. I have always done it using the disk utility and not from a boot up on the OS install dvd.
Is there a difference? I notice that if I do a repair permissions 2 or 3 times in a row that some of the same permissions are repaired again and again.
    Thanks for any info!
    Ymir

I notice that if I do a repair permissions 2 or 3 times in a row that some of the same permissions are repaired again and again.
I assume you are referring to the log entries which contain "We are using special permissions..."
If so, you can safely ignore those messages. They are purely informational. This is not indicative of a permissions problem.
There is also no need to repair permissions while booted from the system DVD. Running it the way you are is fine, and you should only need to do it when you have a problem with your machine resulting from improperly set permissions.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Drive Repair/Permissions Problems

My MacBook Pro (2.2GHz) wouldn't start. I was getting the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel that never stops. Tried zapping the PRAM. Tried holding down the shift key. No luck.
So I finally booted from the Leopard Install CD. No problem. Figured I'd use the Disk Utility to repair the disk. I get the following two problems every time:
    REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS:
    Repairing Permissions for "GROOVY"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    REPAIR DISK:
    Checking Catalog File
incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub
(it should be 16 instead of 17)
Every time I re-launch the computer, using the Leopard CD, I get the same two problems. Can't repair permissions at all. And I get the same "incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub" error when trying to Repair Disk. Even though Disk Utility appeared to repair that problem (and then recheck it) the last time.
Anyway I was able to use Firewire Target Disk Mode to copy all my files to my PowerMac G4. While I was connected I also used DiskWarrior. Seemed to repair the disk with no problems.
So at this point I've pretty much resigned myself to doing an Archive and Install. Unfortunately I've tried it twice and I keep getting this:
    INSTALL FAILED
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
The installer could not install some files in "/Volumes/GROOVY". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Click restart to restart your computer and try again.
Now I'm going to try wiping the disk and doing a fresh install. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to call Apple. Anybody else having similar problems?
    Thanks,
    LT

As I understand it, you can't fix a failing SMART status. Believe me I tried on my iBook! I was originally under the impression that DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro could fix anything, but I now understand that they and Disk Utility can only repair the directory. As it was explained to me, SMART was set up to give warning of hard drive failure so that you could rescue your data before the hard drive dies altogether. You can disable it I think, but that's like putting black tape over the warning light in your car that lights up if you are running out of oil--possible to do, but not a good idea.
So if your SMART status is failing, then the only cure is to replace the hard drive. The hard drive can work for a while, but it's on its way out.
Here's a little background information on SMART status:
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000184.htm
And I hope this was just a rhetorical question!

  • Which volume to repair permissions?

Perhaps this is a dumb question -- but there are none of those, right -- but which volume do I select when I repair permissions? There are two there. One says Macintosh HD (Mac OS Extended Journaled) the other says 37.3 GB Fujitsu MHT20. I usually do the process on both of them. Is this necessary?
    Thanks in advance...

but which volume do I select when I repair permissions?
You can select either. Unless you've partitioned the drive, both of those items are treated the same for most tasks.
    Is this necessary?
    No.

  • Repair Permissions problems after Software Update (10.5.7)

I ran Software Update this evening.
    I selected the following Updates:
    Mac OS X Update 10.5.7 (I was at 10.5.6)
    iTunes 8.1.1
    Airport Utility Software Update 5.4.1
On restart, there was a warning icon (circle with diagonal line) and the gear kept spinning. No response at that point.
I called Apple and following his instructions..... Booting from the Leopard disk I/we/it repaired permissions and verified disk and then restarted and all seems well.
However, on the repair permission after this warning there were a number of permission problems reported and I just ran Repair Permissions again and they persist. AppleCare said those error reports would most likely remain but that they will not cause any problems.
I'd appreciate an assessment by anyone who is an expert in this area.
    Thank you.

  • Which Forum for Wireless Mu

    Hi,
I have a potential problem with my recently purchased Sound Blaster Wireless Music (which is cool but I'm not sure which forum to post the question in.
Please could someone point me in the right direction?
    Cheers,
    James

    JamesHA,
Actually since it is a Soundblaster Wireless Music we have directed most users to the Soundblaster board for it. This is one of our "mixture" products where it could fit in a lot of places so it was wise to ask where to best ask. Soundblaster is the place.

  • Repairing Permissions Problem

I've never had a problem repairing permissions until yesterday. While using Disc Utility it kept hanging at a particular point and the following message came up:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I quit and then this message came up:
"Operations still in progress. Disk Utility still has some operations in progress. Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational. Are you sure you want to quit?"
I had no choice but to quit. Tried rebooting, having no app's running, all to no avail.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Disk Utility and repair permissions problem after upgrade 10.5.1

*Problem with Disk Utility* - +repair permissions don't work anymore+
After upgrading to OS X 10.5.1 tried to correct permissions with Disk utility. But I'm not able to repair permissions, because I get this message every time "fault: The underlying task reported a fault at concluding." and permissions repair stops. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any idea how to get this working again?

Will try installing OS X 10.5.1 again from the downkoad that you recommended. Won't be able to do this untill after the New Year but I'll let you know if this helped. I had another problem after he 10.5.1 upgrade and that was that the Security update 2007-009 also refused to install. Could this be related too the problems with Disk utility and the permissions problems.

  • Which forum for LenovoEMC / IOmega NAS units?

There seems to be three fora for these NAS devices.
On the index page, this one seems to be only for PX devices but that doesn't show up in the cookie crumbs which say "Lenovo Community > Network Desktop Storage > LenovoEMC Network Desktop Storage"
And some of the messages are clearly about the IX series.
Can we have clear guidlines for which forum to use and some nudging to see that they are followed?  Perhaps the fora should be combined.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello HughR
The forums are separated in the same way as in the support page, with the addition of moving rackmount devices to the enterprise forums.
    -LenovoEMC: LenovoEMC Network Desktop Storage
current LenovoEMC px desktop units (lifeline v4.x.x)
    -Lenovo: Lenovo Network Storage
Current Lenovo ix and ez media desktop units (lifeline v4.x.x)
    -Iomega: Iomega Desktop Network Storage
Legacy ix class devices, pre-LifeLine os Storcenter, or other legacy Iomega network hard drive devices.
Iomega branded px devices technically could go here, however the LenovoEMC forums would be best suited. Same for any Iomega ix or ez media device, the Lenovo section would be better suited. ( more of a catch-all section) (lifeline v2.x-3.x)
The Enterprise product section has the following:
-LenovoEMC Rackmount: Lenovo EMC Rackmount Storage
Current LenovoEMC px rackmount devices (lifeline v4.x.x)
    -Iomega Rackmount: Iomega Rackmount Storage
Legacy Iomega ix/px or other pre-LifeLine OS rackmount network storage devices. (lifeline v2.x-3.x)
    Bottom line:
If you have a current PX device use the LenovoEMC destop/rackmount sections accordingly.
If you have a current IX or EZ Media device, you should use the Lenovo forum section.
If you have a legacy Iomega device the Iomega desktop/rackmount sections should be used

  • Repairing Permissions problems

    10.5.1
first it takes about 1.5 hours. it jumps out about 1/5 way on the bar but sits there for 30 minutes or so, a long time before starting to print details. it will finally finish saying perms have been repaired.
in the details, however, i get loads of SUID reports that say those will not be repaired:
    Repairing permissions for “Tiger”
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writecon fig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
i need a solution that does not involve reinstall as this is a remote machine.

Although there is a lot more going on repairing under 10.5, it should not take that long. All three of mine take about five minutes.
If you download and install 10.5.1 directly from the Apple site, rather than from Software Update, you will get rid of most of those errors, all but one, and may fix your 1.4 hour issue.

  • Which forum for EM 10g Db Control questions?

It seems as if Enterprise Manager 10g is getting more popular. I see more and more threads in Database forums about the web-based OEM... while there is a dedicated EM category and forum (but forum name includes Grid Control).
Where should discussion or questions threads about Database Control be posted? Does Oracle have an idea about this?
Considering that Database Control is a single-database, cut-down version of Grid Control, should we try to focus the Enterprise Manager?
Database - General forum might be the logical place to post. After all, somebody new to Oracle "just" installs Database and problems with "web page"/EM is probably seen as problems with the database.
Both forums lacks a description (as seen on main forum page, Category pages or forum listing).
Could the use of the forums be made any clearer?

    Hej Fredrik
I agree that we should have a dedicated section for all the EM questions in the Grid area of this forum in order to separate all the other grid requests.
you got my vote also on that post.

  • Is this the right forum for an email problem question?

I have posted questions in the wrong section before and don't want to make such a mistake again.
So.. can I discuss an email issue here?
    Thanks!

    Hi Milli!
You can if your email is web-based, i.e. via Safari, but as you are running Tiger I would suggest that you post in the Mail for Tiger forum:

  • Permissions problems after latest software update

I verified my disk, repaired permissions, installed the latest SU (iTunes and FrontRow) individually, repairing permissions between installations and I still show permission errors. An example:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
I get dozens of these, regardless of how many times I run DU/Repair Permissions. Does it have something to do with the "l" as in "they are lrw-r--r--"? Any "fix" for this or is this something to be concerned about?
Thank you for your consideration and input.
    Sincerely,
    NoKaOi

I don't agree that the permissions repair system is in a "state of disarray," that it isn't useful for repairing permissions, or that it somehow represents an exploitable security issue. The only thing "wrong" with it is it generates messages that not all users understand. If this is an indicator of a system in disarray, then so is everything from crash reports to most system logs.
biovizier's argument is spurious. There are no "false positive" messages because a warning is not a positive indicator of anything. Apple's built-in dictionary says it is "a statement or event that indicates a possible or impending danger, problem, or other unpleasant situation" & its use throughout the OS is consistent with that meaning.
The permissions repair in Disk Utility is intended for a specific purpose: to correct problems caused by mis-set permissions of files installed by the Mac OS X installer. This is printed right in the First Aid window! If that isn't enough of a hint, open Disk Utility's help, where you will read that +If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking “Repair Disk Permissions.”+
*It still does that* -- in fact, if it acted on what it instead only warns about, it would not in some circumstances correct problems but cause them. This conservative approach is characteristic of all the underlying utilities bundled with the OS that Disk Utility makes accessible to users through a GUI, including the disk repair, which stops short of attempting repairs that might lose data.
All the "voodoo" comes from users that have decided it has other, vaguely understood powers to correct or detect things it was never designed to do. The complaints about this are just about as reasonable as complaining that a screwdriver makes a lousy hammer. That is true but irrelevant: problems (real or imagined) caused by the misuse of a tool are not the responsibility of the toolmaker, arguably even if the toolmaker does not provide instructions for its proper use. Here they are provided so there are no legitimate grounds for complaint, other than possibly with those who recommend using it for some other reason than to do what it was intended to do.
It's really pretty simple: if there is an indication that the permissions of files installed by Apple's installer are causing problems, then run the repair. If it solves them, hooray for that. If it does not, then the problem is elsewhere & there is nothing to be gained by running it again or puzzling over messages that you don't understand.
