Which GPIB-USB Interface to Buy?

Other than for the great support on this forum (!), why should I buy a GPIB-USB-B instead of an Agilent 82357A? My application is general-purpose lab use.
Steve

The GPIB-USB-B supports both NI-488.2 and NI-VISA APIs. The Agilent 82357A only supports the VISA API. National Instruments has done quite a bit of work to ensure that the GPIB-USB-B driver maintains backwards compatibility with previous NI-488.2 interface drivers. We have also done extensive testing with LabVIEW. With the GPIB-USB-B, you'll have the luxury of selecting from a wide range of programming environments and APIs.

  • Troubles with Agilent gpib/usb interface

I have a problem to use Agilent 82357A gpib/usb interface with NI VISA (os Win98). I have Visa3.0.1. I did all what is written in file niinfo.htm, which containes some advices for running the agilent gpib/usb card with NI software(it is in directory prog. files\agilent\IO Libraries\readme\trouble\) and I also tried most of advices written on the web pages of ni.com. In MAX3 I can only see "miscellaous VISA resources". When I run NIVISAAIC, I can communicate with interface as well as with instrument attached to it. When I close nivisaaic, it returns arror message, that program performed unauthorised operation in module agvisa32.dll. It indicate that trouble is between libraries of NI and Agilent. I tried to install agilent gpib/u
sb driver in many ways, only SICL, or SICL + agilent visa (secondary, side by side), but nothing works. When I run Getting started wizard in run-programs-national instruments-Ni.488.2, it detects no gpib hardware, even MAX indicates some "miscellaous VISA resources". Is there somebody with experiences how to solve this problem.? Thanks

    1. I have tried method 1 in that KB you have adviced me. I uninstalled Ni-Visa and instaled HP-Visa (is not clear from the KB description, if HP should be primary or secondary, side-by side. I tried both configurations). Of course MAX does not find gpib board in any case. To solve this problem in the KB is written "you must right-click on the control or constant and select "Allow Undefined Names." In this step I stopped, because in the MAX I did not find where this "constant or control" is. I tried to do right-click on "devices and interfaces", but only "Create new..." menu appears. The right-click on anything in the MAX does not open the menu which contains "Allow undefined names". Can you please, specify where this right-click should be done to allow undefined names and to continue with method1 to reach the goal of using LV for data aquisition.
    2. Then I tried method 2 from the KB. I have uninstalled HP-visa; HP-SICL and Ni-Visa3.0 is installed, NiVisaTulip.dll passport is allowed and F5 refresh made. In MAX in the section Devices and Interfaces I can see "? Miscellaneous VISA resources" with "GPIB1::22::Instr" (it is for one device with address 22). Instead of "? Miscellaneous VISA resources" I expected, there will be written something like GPIB1(USB-GPIB). In this point I have few questions.
    a) Is it correct if there is only "? Miscellaneous visa resources"?
    b) If I configure usb/gpib card with Agilent config. utility to SICL name gpibn and visa name gpibn, where n is some integer, MAX shows everytime gpib1. There is only one gpib card installed in the PC, so I expect there will be gpib0 in the MAX.
Now, when I run nivisaic, I can see gpib interface named gpibn with gpibn::22::instr. I can communicate through this interface to the instrument in the session opened by double-click on the resource. In the Nivisaic there is also another interface marked as unknown-gpibn::intfc and gpibn::servant. I cannot communicate with this interface. When I install HP SICL with HP visa as secondary, side-by-side, this "unknown gpib" disappears. Then nivisaic seems to be OK(but MAX still shows "? miscellaneous visa resources"),the status of each operation in NI Spy is succesfull. I think I did everything required in method 2 of KB but, I cannot perform any data aquisition by LabView. Are there further thinks to do for starting data aquisiton? Thanks for any advices.

Yes, Id return it and either:

The best idea is to drop that noisy and hissy squawk box and get a ZOOM H6 which has USB interface with MORE options, LESS noise, and far easier to use
phantom power from the H6 is from 4 AA batts, and not via USB.    (have and use same myself) with these Mics:
The unit youre using is getting 48V phantom via USB, which depending on the Mic, often stinks.

  • I would like to know a question regarding interfacing with a Yokogowa WT130 utilizing a NI GPIB-USB-HS is possible in Dasy Lab

I have a Yokogowa WT130 power analyzer and I would like to use this to communicate to DASY Lab. The Yokogowa utilizes IEEE 488 communication and I was thinking of using the NI GPIB-USB-HS to connect the Yokogowa to the computer. I do know that DASY Lab is capable of utilizing IEEE 488 but I am confused on if I would neede a seperate driver for the Yokogowa or if the driver for the NI GPIB-USB-HS would allow communication. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    backhausr1,
I would recommend asking this in the DASYLab forum, which can be found here: http://forums.ni.com/t5/DASYLab/bd-p/50

  • Which audio interface to buy?

I have a macbook and have just bought logic express 8. I was going to get a Tascam US122L usb interface and a couple of pre-amps, but I have read horrible reviews about it especially saying it doesn't work with Leopard. I've read good things about Presonus Firepod but it's expensive at $429. Please can people reply and tell me which audio interfaces they are using succesfully with Leopard and Logic Express 8? Thanks!

The FirePod does present with problems and is for a lot of stuff going on. Is that what you really want? I have seen the sister of the FirePod, the FireBox, for as little as $249 or, with a free headphone or mic, for $299. I am using it with great success now and I had so many problems with it those problems were not MY fault! Now, I am more confident. The FireBox is great and, should you want to keep in touch with me as a helping hand (we could help each other as well!), we could do that.

This an IPOD I bought used.  Everything else works fine.  It syncs to my computer and plays my music but will not connect to the USB interface in my car. My wife's IPOD, which seems to be identical, works fine. I should say it connects but then immediately disconnects.  Any ideas?

Then my last suggestion is to Reset it, while connected to the BMW Audio.
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

  • Is GPIB-USB-B compatible GPIB card? if yes, which card and driver?

I have my codes written while I was using GPIB-USB-B to communicate with HP-4145 from my PC win-XP.
Now I want to use a GPIB card rather than the USB version.
1- Can I use a GPIB card without changing my codes?
2- if yes, then which GPIB card( and which driver) should I use?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

does any one know the proper location to use  firmware upgrade for GPIB-USB-B
    $ rpm -q kernel
    kernel-2.6.18-274.7.1.el5
------  result from exe command line  ---
    [root@gb095 ni_gpib_usb_b]#  fxload -D /proc/bus/usb/003/001 -I niusbb_firmware.hex -s niusbb_loader.hex
    can't modify CPUCS: Broken pipe
    README FILE CONTENTS
The firmware files can be uploaded to your NI GPIB-USB-B adapter
    using fxload.  Example:
    fxload -D /proc/bus/usb/001/002 -I niusbb_firmware.hex -s niusbb_loader.hex
If you wish for the firmware to be automatically loaded through hotplug,
copy the firmware files to the /usr/share/usb/ni_usb_gpib/ directory
(or wherever the /etc/hotplug/usb/ni_usb_gpib script expects to find them).
Thanks go to Michael Ritzert for figuring out how to extract the firmware
from a usb sniff log.  The log that was used is included
(file name is "ni-usb-b-initialization-log.txt"), as well as the perl
script for creating the hex file ("firmware_extract.pl").
what i have to do is upgrade these cards to latest firmware to see if the work with this level kernel
     $ rpm -q kernel
    kernel-2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64

  • Can I use a USB hub to connect to multiple USB ports from one GPIB-USB-HS?

I have one instrument which has a GPIB-USB-HS connected and the USB cable is connected to a USB hub. Can I have multiple PCs to connect using USB hub at their respective USB ports? If so, how many PCs can I connect using the USB cable?
I have downloaded the latest NI-VISA from the website.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You would first need a hub that allows you to switch between multiple pc's and then only one pc at a time would be connected and in control.
When you buy this special type of hub, one of the specs is how many pc connections it has.

  • GPIB-USB-B VISA I/O Library version

I need a GPIB interface that VISA I/O Library version 1.1 compliant to connect to an Agilet 8722ES network analyzer. Is the GPIB-USB-B VISA I/O Library version 1.1 compliant?
    Thanks,
    Brian Keats

    Hi Brian,
The GPIB-USB-B device is simply a hardware device that responds to the driver you have installed for the device. The NI-488.2 drivers which control the device have complete NI-VISA functionality, and there is even an instrument driver on our website available for this device which uses GPIB and VISA. You can click here to go to the download page. The GPIB-USB-B should work great for this application.

  • Creating exe with GPIB-USB

When I create an application that uses my GPIB-USB-A interface it is not included as one of the VISA selections when the application is installed. Which files do I have to add to application installation to have my application work with GPIB-USB?

You would need to install the GPIB and VISA driver,
For GPIB, follow the steps from www.ni.com/support/install. You can download the latest visa driver from, ftp://ftp.ni.com/support/visa/drivers/

  • GPIB ENET Interface not recognized

    Bonjour.

Hey bro -- I am probably a minority here in my complete dislike and distrust of MOTU products, but the same thing happened to me when I bought an 8pre -- it just stopped functioning and no one, at MOTU or anywhere, could figure out why. (And even when it did work it was sort of klugey). Luckily I was able to return it. Recently had a similar crap situation with a MOTU fastlane MIDI/USB interface: downloaded the most current drivers from MOTUs site and it stubbornly refused to appear. Returned it an bought and Edirol, which I had up and running, and connected a MCU to, in minutes.
All I could recommend is check their web site and see if there are new drivers. Or leave a message with their rech support via the site -- they do respond, eventually (within 48 hours in my experience).
    Good luck.

  • Choosing USB interface

    Hi everyone,
just started fooling around with the garage band and decided to buy USB interface. I only record music myself. I play Acoustic/Electric guitar.
I found these three following products:
    1) Line 6 Pod Studio GX
    2) M-Audio Fast Track
    3) Apogee One
Would you advise me which one I should buy and why.
I know this may be silly question, but I need your suggestion.
    Thanks!

The One is ok...don't like the I/O limitations...onboard mic is decent for what it is. But for the same price I would consider looking at Motu's Microbook.
Two channels not one, better I/O, on board EQ and Compression plugs, balanced outputs, etc.

  • Software needed for the USB device, "USB Interface Controller TEST2.0"

My mother recently acquired a digital camera. She acquired it from a second-hand store, which did not include an interface cable or software. The manual (and the USB port on the camera) indicates that a male-male USB cable is necessary for photos to be copied to the hard drive.
I was not successful in locating such a cable at any local electronics store (I assume such a cable is now out-of-date). I purchased one from a seller on eBay. The brand is "e circuit electronics".
Upon powering up the camera with the cable connected to it and the computer, the following message appeared:
"Software needed for the USB device "USB Interface Controller TEST2.0" is not available. Would you like to look for the software on the Internet?"
I clicked "Yes". After an approximate two-minute wait, another message appeared stating:
"Software Update is not able to connect to the Internet. Please check your configuration and try again."
I deleted, "Software Update Preferences" in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder, without solving the problem. How do I solve the issue of allowing Software Update to connect to the Internet?

Thank you for your continued assistance, BDAqua. Unfortunately, the driver you linked to does not seem to be compatible with the camera. It is a driver for the V20 model, whereas my model would correspond to be a V2755, as referenced from a list of other Vivicam models when during a search at the Open Drivers web site.
From the system requirement about the card reader you gave me, it will not work, as this system is running 9.1. I am hesistant to upgrade this computer to 9.2, as I have experienced system unstability with that version, with even the 9.2.2 update applied.
In the mean time, I have e-mailed Vivitar regarding this issue, but have as of yet received a reply.
I am not certain as to other specifics to give you, in order to solve the Software Update problem. Please elaborate.
Yes eww, the computer in question is able to fully connect to the Internet for all that I need. I am fully aware of the difference between a computer connecting to the Internet, and a computer connecting to a digital camera. I have 15 years of Macintosh experience.

  • GPIB-USB-B device not recognized by Windows XP

I am using an HP Compaq nx9010 notebook with Windows XP Pro. When I plug in the the GPIB-USB-B, I get an error message telling me that 'The Device has not been Recognized'. I hjave followed all the instructions and have updated the bios and drivers of the notebook, but to no avail. I have uninstalled and reinstaleld the drivers several times to no effect. I have also tried running the device on an older Windows 98 PC, but the interface is not recognized there either! Is it broken?

    Hi Andrew,
It's Pete from NIUK Tech. support department here. From what you've described it does sound like there may be something wrong with your product.
Firstly, I would just like to make a couple of checks to make sure. If it is broken, we can then organise for it to be repaired/replaced.
    1. Has the GPIB-USB-B ever been working. i.e. how long have you had it, was it working when you got and has since stopped working or has it never worked.
    2. Are you plugging in the GPIB-USB-B before the computer is switched on. This shouldn't actually matter as it is a plug and play device. It would just be useful to know if it works when you switch the computer on with the device plugged in.
    3. I know you've tried it on a couple of computers with differen
t operating systems, have you also tried different USB plug and play devices on the same USB port as your plugging this device into.
These questions are just to cover all the bases before we send it back to the factory for repair. If we do need to RMA the device then I will need to speak to you in person to get some more details. If and when this is needed, it would probably be easier for you to either give me your e-mail address or phone into the department and ask for me.
Anyway, if you get back to me with the answers to these questions then we can carry on from there.
    Best regards,

  • Which NI devices should I buy and how to start with?

    Greetings!
I am an undergraduate who is trying to design a control system which can measure chemical solution conductivity as well as PH value; besides, based on those values, we need to control 4 valves to open and close so that acid, base, water, and salt from 4 tanks can flow into the main pipe.
Question: Which NI device should I buy and start with? The devices have to have at least 4 input/output, do you have any suggestion, Thank you very much!!
I am also new to LabVIEW, so any extra suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you , we are considering purchasing NI USB-6008
    http://www.ni.com/products/usb-6008/
Doest it work with the following PH sensor, one specification says that it has output voltage of Output 0-5 vdc, does NI USB-6008 accept it?
    Model A1004 pH Transmitter
    Warning
Do not short the power connections. Wrong wiring of the signal and power wires will result in
permanent damage to the unit instantly.
    Specs:
    Range 0-14pH
    Power: 12vdc 500ma nominal
    Output 0-5 vdc
    Material ABS
    Calibration trim pots
    Distance up to 50ft
Model A1004 is a pH transmitter designed to be used with PLCs and microprocessors that accept
    analog input of 0-5vdc.
Connect any general purpose pH sensor to the transmitter. Double junction sensor is preferred.
Calibrate unit with 4 and 7 pH buffer solutions. Use zero trim pot to adjust 4pH and span trim pot to
adjust 7pH..Fine tune adjustment is done with span trim pot.
If you do not have a sensor , short the bnc connector ,this will simulate 7pH and observe output voltage
    of 2.5vdc.
Din connector provides power and signal from one cable.
Note.: When connecting signal and ground to the PLC input ,use .01uf capacitor across signal
and ground to filter any noise issues.
