Which H.264 settings for Blu ray with mixed assets

Hi,
I am still learning with the different options that I can chose in Encore for transcoding an asset but I am not sure what to chose.
I created a project in PP which uses the following formats 1080i/25,1080i/50, 720p/23,976 and 1080p/25.
the main scenes in PP is in 1080i/25. Most clips are documenting sports or moving objects.
If I use the automatic transcoding setting in Encore, it will be transcoded in 1080i/25 but is this really good? Although I am in a PAL region I think, for Blu Ray, I could also use NTSC settings like 1080p/25.
What shall I do?
Thanks

  • How do I determine correct media encoder settings for Blu-Ray

I am successfully producing Hi Def Blu-Ray disks by using one of the presets available in Premiere media encoder. Actually using the HDTV 1080i 25 High Quality setting. They playback in beautiful high definition but I think I was just lucky. I would really like to know what determines the setting I should use.
    1. I live in Australia so I assume PAL.
    2. My camera is a Sony HDV. HCR HC9 1440 x 1080i. I assume this is irrelevant to export encoding settings for Blu-Ray.
    3. The export encoder preset has field order set to Upper. I would have thought I should either match the project settings which is interlaced to match my camera and project. OR more likely I should match the audience TV which would be a widesceen plama or LCD TV. I dont know if these TVs are interlaced or progressive. OR is it more a question of what field order the Blu-Ray player expects me to send on the disk?
    4. I will play on a TV 1920 x 1080 pixel capable and on slightly lower resoultion widescreens. The encoder preset is for 1920 x 1080 so I assume that's ok for all widescreen TVs even lower definition ones.
As you can tell I am a learner. Any suggested links to basic reading on the subject would help me.

PS Put this item in wrong forum previously.

Since no response I've been searching and found the following.
When encoding to make a Blu-Ray disk from my HDV 1080i footage:
    1. Tell encoder the source is 1080i That is interlaced and it's TOP field first for HDV footage.
    2. Tell it to encode to 1440 x 1080 resolution. You could tell it 1920 x 1080 but it will take much longer to encode. Will be good but why bother. All BD players will automatically up the 1440 to 1902 full screen.
    3. Beware, not all players support BD-R and BD-RE recordable disks.
Seems Panasonic is good. Samsung probably good. Sony and Sharp probably not able to read (yet).
    4. All players read MPEG-2 compression and H264 compression. Use a bit rate of 25 Mbps for MPEG-2 encode or 18 Mbps for equivalent result in H264 encode. Can use higher rates. These are minimums for a very good result
    5. One pass encode is pretty damn good but use two pass if you have the time to wait for the encode.

  • Render settings for Blu-Ray in the UK

    Hi all,
Bit of a newbie question regarding render settings for Blu-Ray. If I understand correctly, the uk frame rate is 25fps???? And we generally have 1080p TV's etc??? The Blu-ray presets in Media encoder don't offer this and the fact they don't makes me question if I'm not understanding the required settings correctly. ME does offer a 25fps preset but only in 1080i. So, my question is, what should I be rendering to, to then take the rendered file and author it to play on UK blu-ray players. Incidentaly, does anyone have any recommendations on authoring software. I just need to break it down into several seperate categories as well as being able to play the entire movie so the budget is minimal.
    Many thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm using Mac Blu-rayRipper Pro and iMedia converter as well as Handbrake to get the highest quality transfer from my Blu-ray disks to iTunes and AppleTV. Each disk is a bit of a project as no two are the same in terms of the best method of conversion.
I've put a few details in my blog post on getting Blu-ray to work on my Mac Pro in the UK. Was a bit of an epic journey in the UK as we don't have all the options available in the USA:
    http://www.theapplechap.com/TheAppleChap/Blog/Entries/2010/6/20Getting_the_most_out_of_Blu-ray_on_aMac.html
I also posted a short series of articles about getting the best possible movie conversion in iTunes covering subtitles, metadata and SD-HD tagging. May help so here's the link (to the first one, there are 3 in my blog):

  • I have internet service on iMac but cannot get connection for Blu ray with airport express.

Why am I not getting internet connection for blu ray on tv with airport express?

Which exact model of the AirPort Express do you have?
Did the Blu Ray player connect wirelessly to the Express before or has it never been able to connect to it at all?

  • Help with Connection Settings for Blu ray-to-Airport Express-to-TC?

I'm trying to use the network capability of my Sony Blu ray player and having no luck. I have the Blu ray connected via ethernet cable to the Airport Express, which in turn is connected wirelessly to my Time Capsule. The problem I'm having is horrendous because I'm so lame and no amount of forum or internet searching has helped.
The Blu ray network settings wants the following information:
    IP Address
    Subnet Mask
    Default Gateway
    DNS Server (Primary)
    DNS Server (Secondary)
Do I get these settings from System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced or do I get them from either the Airport Express or Time Capsule using AirPort Utility?
I tried giving the Blu ray player a static IP Address in Time Capsule using DHCP Reservations and the Blu ray's MAC Address, but that's not working either. Between the AirPort Express, Time Capsule, cable modem, and MacBook Air there are numbers everywhere and I just don't which set to use.

I have tried most of the suggestions on these forums to get my Samsung connected to the airport express network but so far no luck. Anybody have success out there with step by step suggestions?
Are you trying to connect it to your AirPort Express wirelessly? (That's probably the case if your AirPort Express is your only Wi-Fi device, as its Ethernet port would be connected to your broadband modem.)
Is your AirPort Express "N"-capable? What type of encryption are you using on your network?
Have you installed the "supplied Wireless LAN Adapter"?

  • Best bit rate for blu rays with Toast 11

I'm burning a ProRes422 (uncompressed @ 18GB) movie to blu-ray using Toast 11 Titanium. The maximum bit rate is 9.0 Mbps. Is this sufficient? It seems very low...
Compressor has never worked properly with burning a blu-ray (I know there are more custom settings). I would use this but have had no luck, the blu-ray never burns properly only had luck with Toast.

Thanks for the info, somehow I've had to pay extra for the blu-ray plug in to burn a blu-ray at 26Mbps.
Now I need to figure out why the audio now is 'cracking' on the deeper parts of the soundtrack. The audio is set to PCM 96kHz 24 bit just like the original Pro Res file. In the original it does not 'peak' or 'distort' on the deeper parts of the soundtrack when playing in Quicktime, not sure what is happening to the audio after being burned to blu-ray. I might have to post in Soundtrack to get some feedback, any suggestions?

  • Sorenson Squeeze H264 settings for blu-ray?

I'm trying to create a blu-ray in encore, and when importing an H264 using squeeze's blu-ray preset, encore wants to reencode.  However, a blu-ray mpeg2 created from squeeze's presets works fine with encore.  I'm not able to have Adobe Media Encoder installed on the computer that I am encoding from.  Any advice?  Here are the settings:
    Mainconcept H.264
    2pass vbr
    1080i 29.97
    25,000 Kbps
    constrain at 30,000 Kbps
    level 4.1
    high AVC profile
    interlaced
    top field first
    CABAC encoding entropy mode
    key frames every 300 frames
auto key frame on scene change (50)
    use b-pictures 3
    use b-slices as reference (unchecked)
    multiple slices (0)
    reference frames (2)

My choices entropy encoding are either CABAC or CAVLC.  I tried the various combinations of main/high and 2-pass/1-pass with CAVLC with no luck.
I downloaded MeGui but haven't had a chance to try it yet since it doesn't take quicktime reference files.  My original media is coming from an Avid project, so I suppose I could export a DVCPRO HD quicktime (the media's original format) to test.  Are there any settings in MeGui I need to be aware of or does it have a preset that is close enough to what I need?

  • Best Compressor 3.5 Settings For Blu Ray Authoring in Roxio Toast

I want to export a 2 hour FCP7 project for eventual burning onto blu ray (BD-R DL) disk using Roxio Toast and I was wondering what are the settings in Compressor 3.5 to be able to achieve the absolute best quality file to take into Roxio?
As an aside, is Compressor even required for this or can I import the full res FCP7.mov file?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about this, but you may only be able to use h.264 for video to make a blu-ray inside of Compressor.
I would suggest encoding in MPEG-2/AC3 in Compressor and then using Toast to author and burn.

  • Which DVD Burn Software for Blu-ray from Folder

Per the recommendation in Steve Grisetti's PrE11 book, I would like to burn to a folder and then to DVD and/or BD-R.  However, based upon the Adware problems with downloading ImgBurn, it does not appear to be the way to go at this time.  I understand using Custom install on their "options", but it appears that even the most knowledgeable people sometimes get caught.
Therefore, what is the recommended software for burning DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs from a folder (for those that don't have old versions of ImgBurn).  I will purchase software if that is the best route.

    Ed
I do not endorse any particular program (up for purchase) for the task of taking video files to DVD-VIDEO, AVCHD format, or Blu-ray disc format on disc. Note that I wrote Nero or program like Nero. One of the app of the Nero program is the "Nero Burning Rom".  Use that in your google search. That is the app in a Nero version that you should need for your task. If interested in Nero for this feature, please check out the Nero web page for the versions that have the Burning Rom and the associated price after you have looked at the tryout. The following is a how to for Burning Rom feature
    http://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero2015/burningrom/NeroBurningRom_en-US.pdf
There are other programs on the market that can accomplish the task. Nero products have a long history of often competing with other programs for the burner, but I have not run into that issue using an OEM version that came with one of my computer burners. All the Burning Rom should be doing is taking your files already in the DVD-VIDEO or BDMV structure to disc, not creating those structures.
In spite of what you have read, I do not consider Premiere Elements burn to folder to be a "native" approach/route to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc. I see that only as a troubleshooting alternative when the user experiences unsolved Premiere Elements burn to disc issues. Have you run into problems with the Premiere Elements burn to disc - burner not recognized and/or media not present/other?
Looking forward to learning of further developments.

  • *** FCP output settings for Blu-Ray?

I'm not sure if/how this is possible, but I'd like to export one of my HDV sequences and take it to a production house that can burn a Blu-Ray disc for me. Is it possible to do this using FCP/Compressor or should I wait until NAB for hopefully FCP 6?
If it's possible to export an HDV quality master can someone walk me through it? Would it work for them to use a file that I just export as a full-quality self-contained Quicktime movie?
    Thanks in advance.

Talk to the production house of choice. Only they can tell you what they need. Hopefully for you it won't be HDV.

802.11g (supported by the WPN824) is more than enough for Netflix streaming.  95%+ of Internet service providers in the United States don't offer fast enough service to saturate even that.
(Corollary:  90% of people who buy N routers are wasting their money.  Only a small percentage of those in the 95% above transfer enough stuff internally on their network to warrant 802.11n)

  • H.264 for Blu-Ray Encoding Time

    Hi All,
I have exported a Pro-Res 1080p 2 hour film from FCPX and just dropped it into compressor. I have then dragged the default H.264 for Blu-Ray settings on my video and it looks like it will take way over three hours. I have a friend running Media Encoder and with the same file on his laptop it does it in 40min and it's a slower spec . I am running Compressor  4.1.3 and the latest MAC OS operating system. I have enabled additional instanced checked and the number 1 in the drop down (there are no other numbers)
Is there anything I am doing wrong, surely it can't be this slow, it's not even set to multipass.
    Thanks

Sounds about right to me for a rMBP.

  • Best export format for encoding & burning Blu-ray with toast?

    Hi!
Have a 1 hour and fifteen minutes program which I burn to Blu-Ray with Toast 10/HD. The problem is the time it takes, about 25 hours. Is this resonable really?
    Maybe it´s depending on the format I put out from Final Cut - H.264, 1920 x 1080 (1888 x 1062)Stereo (L R), 48,000 kHz
Does anyone know if there is a better export setting in Final Cut to get the process work faster in Toast?
    Best / Urban

I've never used toast to burn a BluRay however I have used encore and I export 10 bit uncompressed out of FCP and compress that. If your over an hour of program you'll have to scale back the data rate to make it fit, a 90 minute feature looks good content wise, but any text on it will show signs of the reduced data rate. the encode typically takes about 8 hours to build the disk image on an 8 core mac then about 45 minutes to burn from the image. I burn first to a rewritable in case of issues, then if it passes muster I'll burn the master

  • Mpeg 2 for Blu-ray audio exports with missing frames at beginning and end.

Im using a Matrox Axio LE system and the Matrox Media encoder to export an Mpeg 2 for blue-ray. My footage is shot in 1280x720p 59.94 drop frame. I have found that after exporting the file from the encoder and bringing it into Encore CS3 that the audio that was exported is a little shorter than the video. Frames are missing at the end of the file.
Because of this my video and audio are way out of sync. Has anyone else come across this issue?

    Maybe on the Matrox forums.
