Which HD actually Booted The System?

How can I tell or verify - which of my two Bootable Hard Drives - was actually used to boot the Mac System.
I have one internal 150GB hard drive, and one external 1TB Firewire hard drive. I used CCC to clone the internal hard drive to the external firewire drive.
Then selected the external hard drive - as the boot drive - then restarted the Mac. Since the external drive is a "Clone" - everything looks the same on the Desktop.  OK - I added a new Folder to the Desktop - and titled it "NEW FOLDER Firewire".
Next I selected the internal hard drive - as the boot drive - then restarted the Mac again. Looking at the Desktop - that same "NEW FOLDER Firewire" shows up.
I am thinking that if I boot from the external hard drive - and put a new Folder on the Desktop there - - that new Folder should not show up if I then boot from the internal hard drive.  Yes/No?
How can I be certain that the Mac actually booted from the external hard drive - when I selected it as the boot drive? {when everything looks the same on both drives?}.
I must have great misunderstanding here somewhere!
thanks
Carl

OK - I booted from the internal hard drive this time - it shows 4KB
The external HD shows Zero KB.
Now I will reset the boot drive - to be the external drive. Then follow the same procedure - and that time the external HD should show 4KB. {will let you know}.
Just for my understanding:
If I booth from the external hard drive - select that external hard drive - if I then select the "Desktop" icon - files there are still coming from. or being shown from the internal drive - That is to say the system switches back to the internal drive when the "Desktop" icon is selected - Yes/No
To get to the "Desktop" files on the external hard drive - I have to select it - then  I have to drill down though the displayed file system on that volume. ie... Users/Beck/Desktop  - -Yes/No?
thanks,
Carl

  • X1 Carbon Touch: have to push the power button twice to boot the system

This is what always happened when I booted up the computer:
First time when I pressed the power button, the computer was on for just 2-3 seconds showing the "Lenovo" logo, and then automatically went back to power-off with nothing happened further.
And then I pressed the power button again, the computer booted and loaded the operating system without any problem.
Even though I'm able to start the computer in this way eventually, it is very annoying.  It happens every time when I cold started the system (no such a problem if I simply restart the computer).  Anyone knows why I have to push the power button twice to boot the system?  I suspect it's something related to the rapid start technology, but cannot locate the exact reason.  Anyone else has the similar problem?  I have a Windows 8.1 now, but the problem existed when I was still using Windows 8.  After I upgraded to 8.1, the problem still exists.

  • During boot, the system says that the main system board maker cannot be identified

System: HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook, Windows 7 Home Premium
Problem: During boot, the system says that the main system board manufacturer cannot be identified.  If I ignore and tell it to continue, it wants to CHDSK.  If I skip that, the computer finishes booting and seems to operate normally.
    How can I fix this?

    Hi Gordoo3,
Can you expand on the hardware you are using (Chassis, Controller, Devices, etc.)?  Do you have a MXI connection to your PC?  Have you identified the chassis in MAX?  Here is a Knowledgebase article that describes this process.

  • Hi guys, once again I've been tinkering with my iMac (late 2008) model and created a problem for myself... I )as many before me have and will continue to do) selected get info on my harddrive and gave everyone "no access" so can't boot the system...

To complicate matters I tried to run the mac os snow leopard cd but alas it could not boot so it did not save me and now the cd won't eject either probably due to the no access to everyone. I was patient and gentle guys.
I have tried the following without success..
    1. Ejecting the cd using the famous 5 options already posted on here.
    2. Power on holding down "c".
    3. Power on holding down "command s"
Basically reinstalling the system software, changing permissions, then using TM to restore my system before the problem seems impossible unless a genius  here (or at the store) can help me with a rescue mission...
Can anyone help with this? Aside from this particular incident, I'm a pretty bright kid so happy to try a few things before giving up...
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi LetJoJoTakeOver, thank you for that. I did actually try the former piece of advice.
The problem has now been resolved by folks at the Apple Store and this it what they did...
    1. Using one prepared earlier, they hooked up an external hard drive with Snow Leopard installed on it.
    2. Held down the "Option" key while starting up my iMac.
    3. Selected my hard drive then hit the "Command i" (get info) keys.
    4. Restored the permissions under "everyone" to "read and write".
    5. Ran "Disk Utilities" to make sure there were no other permission issues.
    6. Restarted the iMac with the external hard drive disconnected.
    Hey presto. It worked.
    Lesson learned?
I think it's clear. You can pretty much do anything software related and the guys at the Apple Store can sort it out when all else fails.

  • Rescue and Recovery with T40 booting the system (XP) without restoring factory configuration

    (plus bas en français)
    Hi,
I've a T40 which I want to restore the factory configuration.
I've installed the up-to-date version of Rescue and Recovery but :
    - when launching Rescue & Recovery from XP, it does not offer to restore the factory configuration
    - at least, this is feasible when I press the "Access IBM" blue button when starting the computer...
    - ... even if factory configuration restore is available there, it does not work. Indeed, it asks me to confirm and then starts the computer again without restoring anything.
Can someone help me please ?
    Bonjour,

    hey sylvain,
for the Rescue and Recovery to work, did you make a backup of the system via recovery media ?

  • Which files actually hold the info & settings for a single Mail Account?

One of my mail accounts must have gotten corrupted yesterday. Since then I can no longer retrieve mail for this account. This account can still send mail normally. All the other mail accounts on this machine function properly and I can retrieve emails from this account on another Mac.
I could probably solve the problem by deleting the account and recreating it. However when I had this problem once before and deleted/recreated the account it was a long process to try to import all the old emails (which I want to keep) from my Time Machine backup. At that time I still lost emails because the import kept hanging up at the same point in the process, so I would like to avoid having to go through that again.
I'm hoping that if I could identify the files that hold all the account specific info I could restore just those files with Time Machine. I'm guessing that if I were to quit Mail, restore those files and then relaunch Mail, everything should be back to the way it was before the files were corrupted.
Does anyone know if my theory is valid? And, if so, do you know which files I need to replace and where to find them?
-- Thanks, in advance, for your help!

    Thanks for the response!
Well, I looked in the location you mentioned (Users/yourname/Library/Mail/nameof_yourpop account) before posting my question, but if you look in that POP folder the only things there are the .mbox files for that account: Deleted Messages.mbox, Drafts.mbox, INBOX.mbox, Junk.mbox & Sent Messages.mbox. Inside each of those are the actual emails for those folders, which would restore all the emails (which I haven't lost), but there doesn't seem to be any files that carry the info/settings for the account.
I was hoping to find the settings files which must be located somewhere else. Do you have any other suggestions?

  • Booting the system fails

    Hello !
Arch, after a normal shutdown, fails to load !
Lilo checks the bios, loads the kernel, shows some dots, and then freezes .... nothing ....
it constantly fails, even booting the fail safe kernel !
    I don't know what could happen !
Maybe the system upgrade ? ( pacman -Suy )
But i do this on a daily basis, and pacman hasn't reported any failures with the download or the install ...
Is there any way to discover what happened ?
It happened to me only once ... with arch on another laptop ...
My filesystem is xfs ... but i havent edited anything and no failures were noticed ...
    I also have /boot on an ext2 partition ...
so, how to approach such a situation ? I would normally reinstall the whole system , but i think that there may be another way ?

If you didn't run LILO after the upgrade, mico is absolutely right. It fails, because the kernel image has a different size etc.
So what you need to do is to boot using a live CD, mount your system (bind the device file system); then you can chroot into the your system and run lilo. No matter what, after each kernel upgrade, you must run lilo - as is written in the upgrade message, by the way Or use GRUB...

  • Issue in triggering central alert server- (Unable to subscribe the alert which was configured in the system)

    Hello Team,
I'm facing an issue with the alert.
Created alert classification and alert category in the transaction "ALRTCATDEF".
Created container for alert category and maintained the short and long text for alert.
Assigned the particular role "SAP_BC_ALM_ALERT_USER" in the authorization subscription and the same role has been added to user in SU01 transaction.
    Setting up Action:
In processing method the alert category has been assigned as initial value.
I have made all the configuration to subscribe the alert.
    Issue:
In WEB UI under the servicepro business role, The navigation bar "Work list" there is an option to "personalize alert". Once we click on that then we will be able to subscribe the alerts. But in my case the alert category is not appearing in the subscription list. It is completely empty.
System should show the configured alert category to subscribe. But now it is completely empty row.
Thank in advance for your help!!!!

    Hi Ravi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Actually the server and domain all are running well. I can start and stop from the startup menus and command scripts.
The only issue is in the Eclipse (OEPE) when I try to connect the server. However I found the solution that I need comment the localhost entry in hosts file as below.
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
Now the server is connecting well. However I have another issue, that I am not able to shutdown the server from startup menus. I suspect the t3 protocal and HTTP protocal related. If you have any suggestions please help me.
Note: if still have issues then try by removing the LAN connection, or install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter.
But I am still looking for options without commenting the localhost in the hosts entry.

  • Can't get back into Mac OSX    10.4.11 after having to hard boot the system

Greetings. I have a rather quirky iMac PPC G5 with now 2G of Ram and a 2.0 chip. This issue has happened several times, the most recent was today. If the computer locks up or has a kernel panic and I have to just turn it off and then back again...I get a grey screen for a long time with the arrows in a circle, then the fans go high speed and that's it. It doesn't boot into MacOS. I am using 10.4.11 and have an ATI Radeon card. I always have to use Disk Warrior (bless them) to rebuild the drive. Sometimes nothing has changed, other times it will say a startup value has changed. Why would this happen? I suppose I could reboot from the MacOS disk, because the process can take over 2 hours using Disk Warrior. Any ideas on the cause and the cure would be most appreciated. Many thanks. Debbie

When a computer isn't shut down properly the file system can be left in an unstable state. It is very common to be left in a situation where corruption of the directories etc occurs in such cases. Files aren't properly "closed", directory extents may be incorrect, etc. This matters much more with "modern" operating systems like OSX than it did, for example, with early versions of Windows etc.
That is the reason that I was wondering what was causing your kernel panics, forced shutdowns etc. After such events one should really ALWAYS rebuild the directories anyway, even if it WILL restart. Not doing so can lead to corruption that doesn't become evident until further down the track, causing things like freezes and panics of the type you experience.
If you experience such things regularly you should really try to track down the cause of the "freezes", rather than looking for ways to avoid having to rebuild directories.
That said, one way to reduce the impact of such things to some extent is to make sure that your have "journaling" turned on for your HD. Open up Disk Utility , select your HD boot volume (the "volume", not the 'disk" - the volume will be immediately below the HD, but indented a little to the right), and see if the "format" is given as Mac OS Extended (journaled). If not , look under the "File" menu in Disk Utility and you should see an option to "enable journalling". If it is grayed out you may need to hold down the "option" key to access it.
Journaling improves the ability of the drive to "self correct" after a crash by keeping additional records of file states and locations etc.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Transaction or program which shows SAPS of the system

    Hello experts,
Is there any transaction or program or table in SAP system which shows the SAP Application Benchmark for Performance Standards(SAPS) ?
    Regards,
    Sanket Kelkar

    Hello Siva, Hello Sunny,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I got the answer for my own question. My senior helped me in finding it.
In the SAP Directories, check the Temp directory. There is an Operation Manual file for the sized system. In that file we can see the SAPS.
Transaction AL11 --> DIR_TEMP --> Operation-Manual-<SID>. In this file search for the term SAPS.
I hope this information is useful. Any other inputs are welcome.

  • Cant boot the system

my system is booting continously after i run the /sbin/rc0 command. can you please tell me how to bring it to normal position.

    Hi.
If you are not able to go to single user mode, then there is only one solution. You have to boot with solaris installation CD.
Then while it is configuring /dev/ and /devices.
    Press Ctrl+/
    Then u will get a # prompt .
    # mkdir tempdir
    #mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /tempdir(where /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 is the device where ur / is)
    #cd /etc
    #check inittab file.
Then edit the file and check for the entry.
    Then restart the server.

  • Problem to boot the system

First of all I apologize for my bad english, but I hope that you understand me.
I update my system and when I rebooted there was an error because it didn't recognize my root partition like ext3 filesystem. I resolved the problem changing all partition, on my hard disks, from hdxy to sdxy in fstab and running 'mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img'; but now I have a problem during the boot sequences since it stops after 'setting locale' and doesn't go forward, maybe it doesn't find a correct init configuration.
    Do you have any idea?
    Thank you in advance.

Does it stop after "setting locale [done]" or while "setting locale [busy]"? If the latter ist the case maybe have a look at your /etc/rc.conf and  try to use default "LOCALE="en_US.utf8".
Once you got it working you can see what locales are available via "locale -a".

  • Booting the system

I just bought a Macbook Pro 13" Retina Display. The booting took a super long period, to be exact 4mins 39secs to get me to the password page from the time I press the button. This is super long. What could possibly be the reason?

Try a safe-boot (hold the shift key on boot), then after login (in safe mode), re-boot.
