Which HDD partitions can be deleted after migration to SSD (Win8)

Hi everybody,
I have bought a Intel SSD 525 mSATA for my new T530 and have already installed it succesfully. With the Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12  I have migrated the Windows 8 OS to the new SSD. Everything works fine with the SSD and I want to clean up the partitions on the HDD now.
My problem is that I don´t know which partitions belongs to the preload/receovery and should stay on the drive.
HDD:
1. WINRE_DRV -               NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)      1000MB
2. SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)                  260MB
3. Local Drive -                 unknown                                             128MB
4. Windows8_OS [D:]  -  NTFS                                                     447,2GB
5. Lenovo_Recovery -     NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)       17,1GB
Which partitions can be deleted without damaging the preload/recovery function.
Could anybody help me with this question ?
Thanks a lot

Yes. The SSD is my new boot drive. These two partitions are on the SSD now.
SDD:
SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)        260MB
Windows8_OS [C:]-   NTFS                                         111,5GB
The HDD should be my storage Drive. Thats right.
But the preload/recovery partitions remains on the HDD. I have created a USB recovery media according to this instruction (http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024). The recovery partition should be on the USB flash drive now.
I want to remain the recovery partition on HDD to have a second copy, if something happen to the USB flash drive.
HDD:
1. WINRE_DRV -               NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)      1000MB
2. SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)                  260MB
3. Local Drive -                 unknown                                             128MB
4. Windows8_OS [D:]  -  NTFS                                                     447,2GB
5. Lenovo_Recovery -     NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)       17,1GB
Is only number 5 the recovery partition or are 1 ,2 ,3 linked to it ?

• Which HDD to upgrade Thinkpad T30 after a HDD crash

Hi everybody,
I left my laptop to a friend that decided to make a defrag to the HDD.
Unfortunately for me HDD's arm broke during the defrag (reorganizing the disc). It happens sometimes especially if the HDD is old.
Mine was a IC25N040ATCS04-0 (40 Go, 4200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) from 2002.
I'd like to change it for an upgraded one. But I am not sure which one I can put in it?
I will have to re-install all the laptop software, bios included???
Anyway, I've seen that you can install HDD over 100 Go capacity, is it easy, whiche ones to you advices.
Is there tips and tricks better to know before doing any change.
My computer is still working a bit if something is needed to be checked.
Thanks in advance for any help you could give.
Best regards.
Vincent
Ps: Please excuse my bad english, I did not practice for ages.

Hi ever23,
It supports:-
PATA or ATA-6 2.5 inch form factor drive
12.5 mm for systems without the touch pad
9.5mm for systems with the touch pad
2.5 inch form factor
Dimensions (mm): 9.5 (H) by 70 (W) by 100 (D)
The following drives it supports:- http://computers.shop.ebay.com/Hard-Drives-/158830/i.html?_nkw=t30+drive&_catref=1&_dmpt=PCC_Drives_...
Software, yes, you would need to install. BIOS, no you don't but perhaps you would need to upgrade it nonetheless.
Hope it helps.

• Messed up computer (10.9.4) after migration to SSD - permissions or java problem?

thanks in advance for reading!  I have a doozy:  I moved my hdd to my optibay and installed a new SSD into my main hdd bay (mbp late 2011)
transferred data from hdd to ssd using superduper
so the ssd is now a clone of the old hdd (and in the same place as the old hdd) and the ssd is the startup
BUT
seems permissions are wonky?
not sure what it is.  possibly java is a problem -- maybe via permissions?
here's the symptoms:
browsers/finder work great (faster with ssd)
but MANY apps just wont load or are wonky.
bluestacks won't load-- wont even get to the "loading" animation...  (have re-installed numerous times)
metasearch on vuze won't work -- I see it for 7 seconds and then it vanishes.
other apps wont load -- the problem seems to be java related maybe?  I'm not clear.
steps I've taken to resolve:
(all did nothin)
re-installed every app that wasn't working (ug!  endless!  appcleaner etc!  hard to say how far they were uninstalled but seemed pretty thorough)
re-installed OSX 10.9.4
repaired permissions in a few ways on ssd
even "Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs"  via rebooting with cmnd+r
downgraded to java 6 (did nothin) then back up to java 7 (nothin)
erased all the java caches etc I could find
now I'm not really sure WHAT is going on here -- but my suspicion is that there's something funny about the superduper migration and permissions  (everything was working when I upgraded to 10.9 a month ago)
I noticed: when I open a lot of folders, like utilities etc, they're read-only.  huh?  I don't think that was true, before.
to fix this I made the possible mistake of GetInfo/giving read-write privileges to everyone and "applied to enclosed items"
maybe that was dumb?
either way, after rebooting and repairing permissions, it seems the read-only structure of much of the new ssd is back
(I'm logged in as my main account as always -- is this not root? I'm never clear on root stuff...) (with mavericks, before the migration, I was able to run all these apps fine.  but none of these odd "read-only" icons were showing up in my folders)
so maybe bad permissions -- or bad java -- is the reason apps won't connect to the internet?  sometimes they crash when running animations.
ANY help would be so appreciated!  already wasted many full days on this!  ack!

I think another reason this might not be the best setup for me is in the comments:
>This how-to does not actually help you to create a true fusion drive. What you are actually doing is creating one volume group out of the SSD and the harddrive and presenting that to the OS as one or more logical volumes. This is a very different sort of beast than a fusion drive. With this setup, If the SSD is the first drive in the volume group, new files will be written to the SSD until it fills up and then files will be written to the harddrive. This explains why one commenter witnessed, using iostat, new files being written to the harddrive rather than the SSD and others said it started off fast and then got slower later on. If you don't want to buy a fusion drive, but do want fast boot times and fast loading of programs, I would suggest using these as two independent formatted drives. Install the OS and programs on the SSD and store the majority of your files on the harddrive.
I think I'm happy with having the SSD handling the OS etc
and my HDD doing media
wud be nice, however if when I put stuff from the HDD into the trash it doesn’t ask to delete immediately the way it would if I was on a wifi network with another volume (what IS that about...?)  these volumes are connected so directly, why cant I throw something in the .trash from the optibay-HDD and let it sit there till I'm sure to erase it?  :/
This is a Fusion Drive by definition. A Fusion drive is also a Logical Volume and a CoreStorage volume. ( Please see this as well - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1530110 ). If you run the same commands on an Apple-provided "Fusion" drive, you will see similar output.

Following the migration process of transfering files from G5 iMac to MBP, I can't eject the external disk icon. I get the message "The disk 'Macintosh HD' is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again."
I don't see any apps running. What can I try? Thanks.

If I recall correctly, you are supposed to shut down the mac you transferred from (on my old powerbook that involves holding down power button for about 5 seconds). That shoud do it. Then unplug the connection from the old one to the new one.

• Re: Satellite C50D-A-13G - boot from HDD only, can't install Win on new SSD

I recently bought a SSD to improve performance a little, I of course want to install Windows onto this.
The problem is that while the laptop recognises that the SSD is there, it only tries to boot from it, which it can't of course because it is blank.
Says 'Checking Media [fail]' and then 'No Bootable Devices Found.'
I've gone to the boot menu and tried booting from CD and USB, neither option works and the system again tries to boot from the blank SSD.
I've set both the DVD drive and the USB as first boot devices. Again neither of them work and you guessed it, the system tries to boot from the blank device.
What am I missing? There has to be a way to get the system to boot something other than the blank SSD.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the link, it solved my problem perfectly.
I was trying to reinstalling Windows 8 as it happened though, from the disc I'd burned after buying it for 24.99 at launch. I wanted Windows 8 from that because I hate the extra tat that Toshiba installed. That rubbish comes over to my desktop as well because of synch.

• Which of these folders contents can I delete

I want to free up some space on the hard drive, and I know this is where all the memory is being taken up at. Which folders contents can I delete, that will not effect playback and exporting of my sequence in a project?

within these folders you should find that you have subfolders for each of your current projects
if you find that there are folders for projects which are already completed, signed off, mastered to tape and/or achived, then you can safely delete those particular projects subfolder
warning: be careful that you are not deleting content from one old project which you are actually reusing in a new and current project

• How can i delete backups from my hdd?

there is a 190gb backup in my hdd named backups and i can't find it. İ need more space in my hdd how can i delete them?

Yes, they are made by Time Machine (in the event that the real TM drive is not connected), they are temporary in nature and will be deleted if the OS requres the space or when the TM drive is connected.

• Can't delete specific messages from my inbox

I have about 40 e-mails stuck in my inbox, which I just can't delete. I move them to trash, select to delete them, but they always reappear in my inbox whenever I re-login to Mail, or when I move to another folder, and then back to my inbox - they always come back!
All these messages that are 'stuck' in my inbox are "mail delivery system" bounced-back mails, returned mails from a big mailout I did. I have tried everything I can think of, and just can't get rid of them. There have been about 18 mails stuck there for about 5 months now, and today - after doing another big mailout - I have about 40 more that I can't get rid of!
Please help!! It's driving me mad!

After MUCH searcing through this forum, I finally found the answer to my own question - and it has WORKED!!!
I paste from another discussion:
"You may be able to get rid of those messages in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X) (for best results do it with one message or just a few at a time), but you may need to remove them from the server first. Does this account allow web access?"
All it took was using the CUT function (from the edit menu list), rather than using 'delete' or dragging them to the trash. They are gone, and it seems to be permenant this time!!
WOHOOOO.

• Which log file can be removed safely?

The directory /private/var/log uses about 4.5 Gig of disk space, about half of which is used by /private/var/log/asl.
My question now is: which of these can I delete?
I assume, I can't delete the files *.log.
But what about *.log.bz2 - they should be OK to delete, shouldn't they?
And what about the files in /private/var/log/asl ?
Thanks a lot in advance for all insights.

Hi Guys & Gals,
I have just published and burnt my holiday movie through idvd and saved it to my external hard drive. Can I now go into Imovie and delete the events and projects that are in there as I wish to free up space?....
WIll the movie as a whole be saved on my external drive or does it still require the clips from imovie?... This is obviously presuming that I will no be making any further edits on this movie...
Any help gratefully received....

ah... My "DVD" is three seperate projects so I guess I can't save the "DVD" as a whole but can save the three projects as seperate quicktime movies which means I can then delete the events and projects from Imovie?...

• I have a Bootcamp partition on  my Imac with Mavericks which I can't delete because the Partition Layout is greyed out and is stuck on 'Current'. What can I do?

I have a Bootcamp partition on my Imac with Mavericks which I can't delete because the Partition Layout in Disk Utility is greyed out and is stuck on 'Current'. What can I do? I was trying to install Windows 8.1 but apparently, this is not yet possible.
I was originally able to restore to my original Mac OSX partition using Boot Camp Assistant but then after entering Disk Utility and re-RAIDing the default RAID 1 to RAID 0 in the BootCamp partition (I suspect this is the cause of the problem but why was it defaulted to RAID 1 in the first place?!!!!), forever afterwards, I couldn't restore the single OSX partition.
Whenever I used BootCamp Assistant my choice to 'Install or remove Windows 7 or later version' was greyed out. Finally I went to Disk Utility to repartition but the Macintosh HD and BootCamp disk partition functions were also greyed out (even if I started up from Recovery mode holding down option, command and 'R' and choosing Disk Utility). BootCamp Assistant gives the error message 'The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition' with additional small script 'The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows', and DU gives the error message 'The full size of the Fusion drive is not available for repartitioning'.
What can I do to fix this problem? How can I make the Partition Layout button active in DU so I can change the partition to all OSX? I'm prepared to wipe off all my data etc to repartition and have backed up all to disk using Time Machine.

My problem is fixed now, thank you. It was caused by my changing the Boot Camp partition's 'RAID1' to 'RAID0'. If I hadn't done that, Boot Camp would still have been able to 'restore' back to the one partition. It was fixed with the help of Applecare by using a terminal and typing a command to erase the IP of the Macintosh disk (not the volume) as well as the IP of the Bootcamp partition (if I remember correctly), but then I had to restore the OS and all my applications and data etc which I had previously backed up using Time Machine. I haven't taken note of the exact command terminology used. It would be wise to speak to Applecare about this if possible.
Two words of warning, 1. According to the cause of this problem, it might be wise, after reinstalling the ops system to reinstall all extra applications one by one, manually, in case a similar problem arises again. Then manually copy back all data. Or the Mac user could use the Time Machine backup and then uninstall all the added apps then re-install them one by one manually. 2. Beware as after all this the user might not have the 'Recovery partition'. There is a small recovery partition (a few 100 Mb is size) which comes with all later Macs. After all this is done this tiny partition might not be there anymore and the user might have to re-install Mavericks again to get it back, or just install the upcoming update of Mavericks due in a month or so.

I'm installing windows 7 64-bit on my imac which I've done before but I get a message that the partition is GPT even after I format the bootcamp partition.  I just upgraded my hard drive to a 3tb and I'm allocating 1tb for windows. How can I fix this?

No easy fix for a few reasons:
1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
My recomendations:
1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.
