Which hdd upgrade for 13" mbp

So while 250gb is fine, it just quite isn't enough for my needs. Was wanting some suggestions on specific models and places to get them would be great. The more economical the better, but not at the cost of quality of course. Thanks in advance!

The same drive models are available everywhere, and everyone who responds to this question will have their personal favorite, based in almost every case on their experience with that drive and very few, if any, others. Take their recommendations with a large grain of salt, as you would take the results of a political poll that only interviewed 1-5 people. Drives are cheap commodities now, very closely comparable, extremely competitively priced, and they offer very little basis on which to choose among them other than capacity, rotational speed, warranty (which differs little from one model to another any more), and price. All of them will eventually fail, so don't buy any drive without a clear plan for backing it up immediately to another one (or two). It doesn't matter what drive you buy, as long as you have it backed up. And if you don't have it backed up, you will sooner or later lose all your data no matter what drive you buy.

I need help picking the correct/best hard drive upgrade for my MBP. It is the 15" 2GHz Core Duo. Came with a spacious 90GB drive.

Which HDD interface for which drives?

I have read Harm's and others' excellent advice on drive configuration, but am not sure about which drives to put on which interfaces. Assuming an X99 motherboard has 2 M.2 PCIE sockets, 1 SATA Express port, 1 SATA Express controller with 1 port, 8 SATA 6 GBs, and possibly a PCT RAID card. Which of these connectors would you use for which drive, and why? (I suppose another way to ask this might be which hdd uses benefit the most from increased speed--OS, application, pagefile, media, etc?)
Also, closely related, one thing I cannot discern from what I have read so far is where lies the point of diminishing returns. For a system used for a mix of Premiere/Photoshop/AE, using as HaswellE, 32Gb, and say a 980, how many drives and how much drive throughput is required to prevent HDD from being a significant bottleneck?

Normally PCI-E slots are a premium for editing systems and config options so I don't recommend wasting those on NVMe drives or adapter cards. I would suggest the Sata ports for storage usage and a SSD OS drive for sure. A SSD cache drive is a good idea as well provided it's big enough. Normally you want a 256GB Cache drive if so.

Which HDD is good to get as an upgrade for a MBP that already has SSD?

I have a 2009 Macbook pro. I recently added a 256 Samsung 830 SSD and am delighted at the increase in speed and effectual results. I've installed my OS on the SSD, and have left my music, movies, and photos on the HDD.
I would now like to increase my HDD capacity to a 500 or 750 GB. Since I already have the SSD, I'm not too keen on the hybrid Seagate Momentus XT.
I've been researching over the past couple of weeks and find several old threads here where the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200RPM 2.5" is held in high esteem. But then I also find posts from other users who insist otherwise and recommend a WD drive.
Any thoughts?

I hate Western Digital - over my lifetime, I've had nothing but trouble with them.
A few people have had problems with the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200rpm, but not enough to scare me away from them. I use two of them, in USB enclosures, for cloning my internal drive. Never had a problem - will likely be uprgading the enclosures soon to FW800.
I suggest going for it - we'll wait to see if any Seagate disaster stories surface...

Which Reader upgrade for Mac OS 10.4.10?

System requirements page says correct version is Reader 7.1.0.
But when I try to choose appropriate version toggle for Mac Power PC with 10.4.10, I am given only the option to download Reader 8.1.3, which says it is for 10.4.3 to 10.4.10. Yet on system requirements page, 8.1.3 is shown as appropriate for OS 10.4.11 and up.
This conflict seems impossible. Which should I choose?

Which SDRAM upgrade for my old imac?

I'd like to upgrade my imac sdram to as much as it can hold. Here are the specs:
Imac version = 22.14
Mem 348 MB
Proc. 500 MHZ PowerPC G3

I have one stick at 256 SDRAM and one is the one that came with it. I've had one store tell me I need PC100 and others tell me pC133 and I'm all confused!
So my questions: what is the exact type I need and how far up can I go? Is it only two 256 sticks(cards).... thankx yvonne

It can hold a maximum of 2 X PC100, 3.3V, 168-pin DIMM 512MB modules. Note it must be non-eec.
If your 500 Mhz model has a CD+RW drive (A 2001 model) then according to the Apple specs it will also take (low density) PC133 RAM. The RAM will slow down to PC100 speeds though.
I'm not sure if PC133 will work on the non-2001 iMac slot loaders as I've only tried PC133 RAM on the models Apple support it with (works fine).
If you want sure support just go PC100.

Hard Drive and RAM upgrades for latest 15" MBP

I'm minutes from ordering a new MBP. Only concerns are whether I get hte Apple upgrades or shop around.

You're on your own for support when you do your own upgrades like this, but generally speaking, it works fine.
Note that HDD is less risky than RAM. With RAM you run the risk of unstable behavior that is tougher to diagnose. That said, a quality RAM upgrade and some initial testing with any of many available tools is as good as a factory build.
HDD upgrades are less risky, and I've upgraded (well, replaced after HDD death) ones in my MBPs many many times. I crunch my hard drives more than normal and have to generally replace them about every year. Some of the MBPs don't make this easy, and prepare to get all sorts of cozy with little 0 and 1 sized Phillips screwdrivers and some T6 as well, but it is doable (just not quite for the truly faint of heart).
Again, you're on your own for support once you do this, so weigh that in your decision.

One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money. Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions. HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model. The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical. So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up. The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram. According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD. Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?

I am looking at upgrading my HDD and have been reading up on the HDD heights (9mm, 12.5mm etc). Which HDDs will work for my upgrade? I would like to get either a 750GB or 1TB drive. Will the WD Scorpio Blue drives work?

Yes, they have an iffy track record. Do some exploring and research before criticizing. Even WD has to post a page on their site listing all their products that are known to have compatibility problems with Macs.
Ironic that OWC sells WD? Sure, about as ironic as finding food in a supermarket. The word you wanted was "coincidental." You have misused "irony." What business did you think OWC was in? They sell products for Macs, and they don't need to be concerned about honoring the warranties of any product they sell except those exclusively under their name.
I know quite well what prices New Egg offers. There are other factors when purchasing products besides price.

Which DIMM slots for 6GB RAM upgrade

I am not sure if it makes any difference in a Santa Rosa macbook pro whether you put the 4GB RAM chip in the top DIMM slot or the bottom DIMM slot when upgrading to 6GB of RAM. I had heard that bigger chips must be configured properly in a mac pro to get optimal use of the RAM. I have looked all over for an answer for this and cannot find any information about this anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

I have this same question. I have a late-2008 unibody MBP 15, and 6GB of RAM. However, I have observed some instability with 6GB (kernel panics). I'm not sure what to point the finger at. I ran memtest86 overnight without any errors. The memory is Corsair. So, I'm not even sure it's the memory causing the issues.
Most often the kernel panics are from the mdworker or Parallels processes -- both of which are notorious for causing kernel panics.
Anyway, I was also curious whether anyone else has speculation on "Slot 0" vs "Slot 1". So far, I've only run it in "Slot 1". Currently, I've yanked the 4GB DIMM from the MBP and am running back at 4GB (2x2GB).

When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

Which HDD in Optical Bay of 15" Mid-2009 MBP?

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me decide the best drive to install in the opti bay of my mid 2009 15" macbook pro (2.8 intel core 2 duo).
I recently upgraded to 8gb ram and switched out the original drive to a Samsund SDD and the results have been AWESOME (**see below if considering)! I'd now like to install a 1TB hard drive into the opti bay.
Does anyone have an opinion on the following:
1) What's the best drive for this?
2) Will I get the 3.0gb transfer rate if I get a SATA II drive? (I currently get 3.0gb rate with the SSD in the main bay.)
3) Will the sound be unbearable?
4) Will it overheat or make the fans perpetually run? (I had fan issues previously that were mostly solved with the upgrade, though they do still run often...any suggestions to solve this are also welcome.)
5) Any suggestions on an optical bay adapter? I've seen quite the gamut on Amazon.
I plan on using the 1TB opti-bay drive for storing all of my music, movies, documents, photos, etc. All apps/programs will be on the SDD.

**Side note for anyone considering a SDD+RAM update, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's truly like using a new machine! I use a 2012 retina MBP (2.3 intel core i7, SSD, 8g RAM) at work and the difference in speeds are marginal (though I do wish I got the same battery life). Yes, your MacBook will run hotter and the fans will kick in more often. Only you can decide if it is acceptable.
I suggest you can start by using the drive that you removed from your MBP and see if the heat & noise are within tolerable limits.
Mechanical hard drives will not max out the sata interface. You can expect 80-100 MB/s with a mechanical hard drive.
Most users recommend the OWC Datadoubler caddy for the optical bay available here.

I have a sony laptop with windows 7 (64 bit) which I upgraded to windows 8 64 bit. But the machine had to be formatted and this time loaded windows 8 32 bit. Now I have tried itunes for 32bit win 8 as well as for 64bit win 8 but none is getting installed

Now I have tried installing iTunes for 64 bit windows 8 as well as 32 bit Windows 8 but none of them is getting installed. The message I get is, "this programme is not compatible for your pc" (or words to that affect since I dont remember the exact words but this is the meaning).
Can some body send me the link to the right file please. I need iTunes to transfer files from my iPod and iPhone to my laptop.
