Which iLife for my Mac?

I have the following:
Power Mac G4 (digital Audio). 533mhz. 1.5gb memory. Running Tiger.
Really need to have iPhoto. This is daughter's computer and we need her to be able to store and organize photo's and photo imports from the internet for school projects.
I realize many of them have system requirements of 600mhz or more. I do not want or need iDVD, Garageband, iMovie or iTunes (already has this one). Just iPhoto. Do I really need the higher mhz for just the iPhoto part or is that for the Garageband/iMovie stuff?
If so, can I get iPhoto from the iLife '04 or '05 version and have it work?
Did Apple Chat - one recommended getting a new computer (can't afford that and the G4 was a freebie). Went back to ask if the mhz rating was just for the "big" stuff and basically it was "I don't know, just have '08 requirements in front of me". Big help that was.
Any Apple experts to help me figure this out and what iLife version I can use the iPhoto on with the G4?

You can use the version of iPhoto from any iLife package with your configuration.

  • Which printer for my Mac (and Windows 7 PCs)?

Our printer just died and I need to purchase one tomorrow. I'll be buying it locally (not from the internet, etc.) and I've narrowed it down to these models so far:
    Epson Stylus SX525WD
    Manufacturer's website
    Brother DCP-J715W
    Manufacturer's website
    HP Photosmart Wireless eAiO
    Manufacturer's website
    Canon MFC Pixma MP499
    Manufacturer's website
    HP Deskjet 2050 AiO
    Manufacturer's website
    My primary concerns are:
    1) scanning; I'm not too worried about getting the printer to work on my Mac, but I'd like to be able to use the device to scan from my MBP running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, without VueScan (which I tried and dislike very much) - so either with Image Capture or with software provided by the vendor, if it's any good.
    2) Wi-Fi; most models listed feature Wi-Fi (except the Deskjet 2050 AiO, AFAICT) - I've never had Wi-Fi printing before so I'm unsure of what issues to expect - I figure maybe some printers will be easier to setup with a Mac and/or work better. It'd be nice if the scan function could work wirelessly too, though it's no big deal if it doesn't.
    3) photo printing; the printer will be used to print photos occasionally, so it'd be nice if the printer offered a good photo printing experience (sorry I can't be more specific - I'm not the one using the printer for photos).
Also, if you have one of these printers (or an equivalent model), I'd be very interested in your impressions of the printer.
Edit: removed a printer which turned out to be only available online

Well, I managed to get the printer to connect to my AirPort Extreme base station (was fairly straightforward).
Then I wasn't sure how to install the wireless printer with built-in OS X tools, so I ended up using the disc that came with the printer. Installed fine, and I can print and scan wirelessly

  • Which tools for the Mac support Secure Erase (SE)

Note: I'm not talking about what Disk Utility allows you do to go by overriting data. I'm talking about a full wipe of areas not usually accessible by the user. For instance the X-25M like any other ATA device supports SECURE_ERASE which will erase more than just the data area of the drive.
So far HDDERASE for the PC is the only tool I know of that issues this command.
Is there any C code that exists that issues this command that allows this command to be issued on Macs and machines that don't support what's called "legacy IDE mode?"

The most secure is zeroing an entire hard drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1820
Note it won't work on hard drives that have been partitioned. Therefore it really does the ENTIRE hard drive.

  • Which card for Power Mac G3

Which airport card do I need for my Power Mac G3?
I found (through this discussion forum) a list of which computers need the "original" airport card and which computers need the airport extreme card, but I cannot find Power Mac G3 on either list.
I am also wondering whether Apple still sells the older cards.

The Powermac G3 is not on the list because... no PowerMac G3 model is "Airport ready". PowerMac G3s were manufactured before Apple developed the Airport wireless networking system.
You need a non-Apple solution such as:
    1. a PCI card based wireless adapter with MacOS driver support such as:
    http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/11g11bcards/11gPCI.php
    2. a wireless bridge device designed to connect to your Mac's ethernet port like the Linksys WET54G or the Netgear WGE111.

  • Which windows for my mac ?

    Hi Guys !
Just a silly question (i've never expecting to ask this) which windows do i have to install on my macbook Pro ?
    MacBook Pro 17' / 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo / 4 Go Ram
    Mac OSX 10.6.6
(Sorry for my english, i'm only french you know)

You don't have to install Windows at all. In fact, your computer will run better if you don't.
However, if you do, it depends on the technology you use to run Windows. If you use Apple's BootCamp software to create a dual-boot system (one where you choose at boot time whether you want to run Windows or OS X), then you are limited to Windows XP (either version), Windows Vista (any version), or Windows 7 (any version).
If you install Windows in a VM (using Parallels for Mac, or VMWare Fusion), then it's not important. You can install everything from MS-DOS to Windows 7 Enterprise without a problem (and, for that matter, Linux, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, etc.). Because of my work, I have VMs for CentOS, RHEL5, Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000, and Windows 7 Enterprise installed and running under OS X.

  • Which O/S upgrade is recommended for a MAC Book Pro17 with Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz

Which O/S upgrade is recommended for a MAC Book Pro17 with Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

My thuderbolt display is 3 weeks old which I'm using as display for my mac mini. I no longer get the display on but can hear the sound. Please suggest.

Make sure the mini-displayport/TB plug is fully seated.  It may look fully plugged in but isn't.
Make sure the Displays system preferences has an Arrangement tab.  No Arrangement means the monitor is not being detected.
    Do a smc reset.
If none of this works I suggest you take it back to apple (along with your mini).

To use factime on your Mac, I believe you will need to use your email address to do so instead of your wireless number.  Since you can't make calls on the Mac.

    TechTool Pro
    or
    Disk Warrior?

When you say "complete bootable backup" do you mean that it contains the OS + all my applications? Basically a clone of the start-up?
Yes, you have that very clear. I use Tri-backup or CCC for this normally, but there are other options.
If I have this clone, and I start getting issues on my Mac, I can Zero the HD and reinstall the OS via the clone (including all the applications)?
Yes, and if pressed for time you can just keep working off the Clone.
I can Zero the HD and reinstall the OS via the clone (including all the applications)?
Yep, right back to 100%, excluding HW issues.
With all my software... it takes a day to reinstall all of it to a complete image.
Yes, the only sensible thing is a Clone... or two. Most problems can be overcome by simply Verifying/Repairing the HD once in awhile, Repairing Permissions before and after every update/upgrade, and turning off Auto Updates in SW Update CP... wait a couple of weeks and check these forums for the number of problems with any update.
PS. DiskWarrior has saved me hundreds of times from having to do complete new Installs or cloning back of Installs, I figure that's saved me 10's of thousands of hours & grief... I appreciate Alsoft so much that I don't even go for the generous upgrade offers on new versions... I just buy the new version completely at Retail.
PPS. Funny thing, you'll read something like DiskWarrior is a one Pony Dog Show or something... just does one thing... I just have to laugh outloud... Yeah, the one thing is... cure my incurable Mac Problems 99.9% of the time!

Only you can make that determination. All things being equal the 2.5 GHz model is slower.

    TechTool Pro
    or
    Disk Warrior?

Hi! Both and neither. Diskwarrior is the undisputed king of disk drive directory repair (which is the leading cause of drive problems)but that's all it does. TTP does directory repair although not as good as DW but TTP has a hardware test suite to test the components and can test a disk for bad blocks. I recommend both although you'll find yourself using DW the most. If you bought your machine new you should have a hardware test disk. It could be a separate disk or on one of the restore disks. As for your KP's start by disconnecting everything except the keyboard and mouse. Ram is also a likely culprit as can be a video card. The console log file will often give you a hint of the offending item. DR SMOKES article on KP's will also help. Tom

  • I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day.  We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause.  Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn.  Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac.  He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.

  • Can you get iLife for free on a used mac?

I just bought a used macbook pro yesterday and i was dissappointed to see that it didn't have iLife on it. Doesn't Apple claim that all new macbooks come with iLife? The macbook pro i have is a recent model, the macbook pro is from 2011. I thought iLife should have been on it. i'm very dissapointed because im into songwriting and I wanted to use garageband. My laptop came installed with OS X 10.8.3 so i think it should've had ilife with it. is there a way i could get ilife for free?

    1. This applies to new computers. The previous owner of an used one may have deleted it.
    2. If it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, install it from the computer's original disks, or if desired, erase the drive and install a new OS. If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, open the Mac App Store, sign in, and click on the Purchases tab; if you aren't given the option to accept it, contact Apple.
