Which iMac upgrades help Premiere Pro most?

I'm looking at getting a new iMac - the 27" with the upgraded processor (i7 3.4GHz). I see I can also bump up the graphics card to one with more memory (Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB of GDDR5 memory) and RAM can go to 32GB.
What I wan to know is, how are the current gen of iMacs for editing, and which of these upgrades will Premiere make the most of? Processor is always good, and the i7 will do hyperthreading (does that help in Premiere Pro?). What will 32GB of RAM do for it, and will the GeForce with 2GB help? Can it offload any processing to the graphics chip?

I have a 2011 iMac with 1gb of VRAM on an unsupported GPU (AMD 6970M) so I can't really tell you how the new one runs although I will be testing it on a friends new iMac in the next week or two. With Premiere Pro CC, you don't need any sort of hack to enable GPU acceleration. It does help speed up moving around your timeline, etc. However, I have some delay issues which I believe are related to my unsupported GPU. The newer iMacs have supported NVIDIA GPUs and my feeling is always, might as well get the best one if you plan to use your computer for editing a lot. A good deal is to get it from Apple refurbished. I was always afraid of refurbished stuff, until I realized Apple's refurbished products are often perfectly working products that are simply returned after a customer has them for a few days. They are thoroughly tested, AND, most importantly, retain the same warranty as a new computer and are Apple Care-eligible. So why not save several hundred? Bumping the RAM up always helps speed up editing and Premiere Pro CC seems to suck the life out of RAM. I go from 16gb to 50MB of RAM within an hour sometimes, depending on what I'm doing. So more is better there too. Here's the link to a good one:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0MS5LL/A/refurbished-imac-34ghz-quad-core-intel-core-i7
I'd bump up your RAM at macsales.com instead of apple which will save you lots as well.
Finally, I think the iMac is going to get a small refresh of sorts in the coming weeks with the latest Haswell processors and maybe a newer GPU. Not a huge update probably but if you wanna buy full price, it might be wise to wait til later this month (that's when rumors point to the refresh).
I know I didn't answer the primary question you were asking but hopefully this info helps should you decide to upgrade anyway.

Well, I was a Windows user from version 3.0 up until 2008 when I switched to a Mac. I found that from Win 95 forward, I was complaining about the same issues in my computing experience, and all were inseperable from the Windows platform. I say that simply to say that I've gone the Windows route before, and really have no desire to go back.
Why an iMac? I'm concerned that doing a Mac Pro is going to run me a LOT more, after everything. My main thing for the last 17+ years has been web design, and I have done a little video here and there. I want to push more into video as web content for my clients, but have not begun yet - so a large expenditure for a killer workstation would be pure speculation, and not based on actual work in hand. Basically, it's time to replace my existing machine, and I was looking at purchasing one at a slightly higher tier than last time, not a hugely higher one.
Also - as I noted, the goal is content for the web - shooting and cutting pretty simple marketing videos (talking heads, lower thirds, and lots of B-roll) and some animated infographic videos (I aspire to do things like this as my abilities mature: https://vimeo.com/album/1770463/video/25123730). I'm not planning on doing heavy 3D, or intense Broadcast AE VFX work that would require extreme rendering muscle (I don't think).
As to the Mac Pros - I have not looked into them very much. My concern is that they will be quite expensive (What did/do the most recent Mac Pros run? They are all gone from Apple's site). I also don't want to kill a fly with a bazooka. But I'm just not sure exactly how much power I'll need, and how much those deliver. If I was loading up my schedule with a ton of the kind of work that I knew was going to tie my machine up with renders, then I think a Pro would make sense. But if my kind of work is really not anywhere near that heavy, then, it would be largely wasted, no?

  • Timeline frequently stutters during playback after upgrade to Premiere Pro CC 2014?

I recently upgrade to Premiere Pro CC 2014 and I have noticed that my timeline playback frequently stutters on playback if I jump around in the timeline. Other times if I just hit play the sequence will start playing back fine but then it will start stuttering after a few shots? This never happened before. I'am playing back C100 AVCHD media using create sequence from clip option for my timeline settings. I recently upgraded to Yosemite OS on my mac pro and I have not noticed any improvement. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Harry
    My specs: Mac Pro 2009
    Processor  2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB
    Startup disk SSD

Thanks for the info Kevin. However on doing more probing into my problem I
realized the problem was being cause by my Kona LHi card. The Kona card has
started to whining sound, so I disconnected the card. When I went back in
Premiere Pro everything in the time line played back really fast with no
stuttering. The response time in the timeline is very fast. And I can jump
around the timeline with no problem. I will be getting my Kona Card looked
at by AJA, I'm sure there is a problem with card.
    Thanks

  • Upgrade to Premiere Pro CS6 from my Creative Suite 5 Production Premium

I am trying to upgrade to Premiere Pro CS& from my Creative Suite 5 Production Premium but the Serial Number for my Creative Suite 5 Production Premium is NOT accepted as a valid Serial Number to upgrade from.

You cannot upgrade from a suite to a single product. Also CS5 s/n is not valid for CS6.
You need to buy Premiere CS6 first to get Premiere working.

  • CS5 upgrade from premiere pro 1.5

Is it possible to upgrade  from premiere pro 1.5 to CS5?

1st, CS5 is no longer sold, but you may still buy CS6 standalone, or a monthly subscription to CC on the Cloud
    http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_c reativesuite6.html?promoid=KFPMZ
2nd, even if CS5 was still being sold, Adobe only offers upgrade pricing for one or two versions, so 1.5 would be FAR too old to qualify
-but, as I said above, you have not been able to buy CS5 for a long time, 3 or 4 years
If you are asking will CS5 upen a version 1.5 project file... not likely... too many changes between versions
If you have version 1.5 and can't get it to activate, read below for a special version 2 that you may use

  • I have a serial number for PE 10 (download).  How do I upgrade to premiere pro?

I have a serial number for PE10 (I downloaded the software).  How do I upgrade to Premiere pro?

I do not think that Premiere Elements qualifies as an upgrade for Premiere Pro
For CS6 go to the second page at http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_c reativesuite6.html?promoid=KFPMZ
When you click to buy, change from full to upgrade and then see what is listed as an upgrade qualifier
For the newer Cloud version, I don't think there IS an upgrade, only a Cloud subscription

  • After upgrading to Premiere Pro CC 2014, I can't change the render preview location

Ever since I downloaded Premiere Pro CC 2014, I cannot re-route my render preview files. I have two internal hard drives and I need the files to go to my secondary one. With CC, it did this just fine, but since I've upgraded to 2014, it will not do it. I've set it the same way I did before in Preferences/Media, then set the Media Cache Files and Media Cache Database to the new hard drive.  It's eating all my hard drive space and I cannot render or export a large sequence. Is there a trick to this I'm missing that has changed?

Thanks Neil! I'm actually wondering how to change where the preview files go. I've attached two screen grabs. Right now my media cache is going to my SATA drive (my smaller of my two internal hard drives and the drive where Premiere Pro is located.) I want to re-route my render files to go to my Macintosh HD drive which is much larger and gives me more breathing room. I could do that before but since I've upgraded to 2014, even though I have it set in preferences, it STILL goes to my SATA drive. So annoying! I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a bug. I'm still running Mountain Lion (getting ready to finally upgrade, I've just been needing to backup my computer), could this be the reason? Any ideas? Thanks so much for the help!

First, there aren't any Adobe employees here.  Not even me.  The mods and the experts are users just like you, volunteering our time to help out in the forum.  So if you are unhappy with CS4, then you need to take it up directly with Adobe.
Second, I had no trouble with the upgrade.  It worked "right out of the box".  There are many, many other users who have had the same experience that I have had.  Your issues are the exception, not the rule.
Many problems that are asked about here are system-specific, which is why I suggested that you update your video drivers.  Updating your audio drivers wouldn't hurt, either.
Google for the Premiere Pro Wiki.  It will have many tips and tricks, as well as some in-depth troubleshooting to help you get up and running with CS4 (or any version of Pr).
    Good luck,

  • HELP: Premiere Pro CC not using all CPU and RAM during rendering and export

    Hello,
I am using Premiere Pro CC on a Windows 7. My timeline is quite simple with two videos, one with the movie (mpeg) and the other with the subtitles (avi).
When I render the sequence in PP or export, the rendering time is way too slow and it only uses around 15-20% of the CPU and 3 GB of RAM.
    My hardware config is :
    - CPU : i7-4770k 3.50Ghz
    - RAM : 8 GB
    - Disk : 2 x 3 TB SATA (no raid)
RAM is not the bottleneck, neither the disk access.
I have tried rendering and exporting the same project on an iMac (with an i5 2.7 Ghz and 4 GB RAM and only 1 disk) and the result is 4x faster !!!
The CPU usage is close to 100% as well as RAM usage.
So how come PP uses all resources availble on an iMac and not on a Windows 7 ?
Is there any known bug or software bottleneck on Windows 7 ?
My machine is brand new and nothing much installed besides Adobe products.
Any help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,

I just rendered out a a 2 minute sequence with about 100 clips in it and Colorista effects on everything to the Vimeo 1080 H264 preset. It took about 5 minutes to render straight from Premiere, it used all the recourses it could, my CPU was running at near %100, same with my ram and GPU, I was happy.
Then I did another render with Red Giant Denoiser and it now wants to take 30 mins and it is only using about %20 of the recourses available. My problem isn't that its taking longer with Denoiser but that its not using all of my computers CPU and GPU.
Im rendering at maximum render quality and bit dept to H264 (Im happy to wait the extra time), if I try to use VRB 2 it encodes 1 pass at a time and wants to take up to 40 minutes.
I would appreciate some advice on this.

  • Installed upgrade of Premiere Pro CC to "CC 2014" but did not know it required payment. Now my PAID license has been reverted to an expired trial.

I needed to open a Premiere Pro CC 2014 project on a computer which only has Premiere Pro CC 7.3.3, so I installed the upgrade to CC 2014. I did not know it required payment (a warning would have been nice).
Now my PAID license has been reverted to an expired trial. How do I change it back?

Apologies in advance for having to ask such a basic question... I have recently upgraded my edit suites to PP CC 7.2.1 (4) from Apple FCP. The suite is connected to the Internet, yet when I open the Adobe Application Manager, and open the Premiere Pro drop down it doesn't mention 2014.1 ?, How/where do I upgrade?

  • Which color models do Premiere Pro and After Effects use?

    hello,
I had a problem with a psd-file that I used in Premiere and AE: when I imported the AE-composition with the mentioned psd-file into my Premiere-sequence, where the psd-file was also used, the color of my psd-file looked different. It seemed that the two "instances" of my psd-file did use different color models.
On the Adobe-help-page I found an entry with the following info: "... After Effects works with the RGB (red, green, blue) color model. AdobePremiere Pro, however, works with the YUV color model. When you work with a dynamically linked composition, Adobe Premiere Pro either converts it to YUV or retains the RGB colors, depending on the output format." (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WSbaf9cd7d26a2eabf53ab041041081290f-7fe8. html)
BUT: I found another entry in which it says that "... Premiere internally works with  RGB..." (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS6693F22C-C06E-431a-A634-62343C65BA7B.ht ml#WSbaf9cd7d26a2eabf53ab041041081290f-7fbb)
    Can somebody help me?

I believe Premiere Pro will keep the YUV color space on all YUV material (normally only video, still images are usually RGB) for as long as it can, all the way through the pipeline to export.  But there are some things which can force an internal RGB conversion, like the addition of an effect which does not work in the YUV space.  So far as I'm aware, once converted to the RGB space, it will stay there until an export forces a conversion to another color space.
So the PSD should start out as RGB and stay there both in AE and PP, until an export to a YUV format forces a conversion.
The difference you see between the programs may come about because AE is color managed, whereas PP is not.

  • Useful for an amateur to upgrade from Premiere Pro 7 to the newest version?

    Hello,
Is it recommended for a bloody amateur to upgrade?
I have just purchased a Sony 520 with AVCHD.
Is Premiere Pro 7 able to handle this format?
    Thanks for all hint.
    Regards
    Aloha

    Bob,
Have you filed a Feature Request for full Canon 5D MKII support with Adobe? That would be a good first step. Also, Adobe is conducting a survey right now, and you can fill in requests for formats that you wish to use. This would be worth the effort, if you have not done so already.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
BTW I think that it was the AVCHD support that the OP was asking about. Ann gave them the right info to help make the upgrade decision.

  • Cancelling photography plan after upgrading existing Premiere Pro Annual plan to Complete Annual Plan

I was subscribed to a Single App Plan (Premiere Pro Annual paid monthly) and the Photography Plan (Annual paid monthly). I recently upgraded the Single App Plan to the Complete Plan (also Annual paid monthly) but I can still see the Photography Plan in my account. How do I cancel it without having to pay 50% for the remaining time since I've been subscribed for more than a month now?

You are correct, this is a case of duplicate purchase as you can only activate the CC two times regardless of the number of CC purchased under the same Email ID.
