Which imac?  Which hard drive?

Have an old purple imac with dead hard drive. Have removed drive, and would like to replace drive, but cannot determine which model imac it is, since the drive is not working. It's at least a 350, because it's slot-load. This drive is a Quantum 30 GB AT Fireball Plus AS, which i do not think is the original. As it is only used for word-processing these days, don't need 30 gb, but don't know how to determine which drive would be ok.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Your iMac can use any 3.5" IDE/ATA desktop drive. The iMac will recognize up to 127 GB of drive space.

If just the hard drive is defective you could mke a bootable USB thumb drive or bootable Firewire HD. Not sure of the connecting cables for the monitor functions. This could provide the functions though.

  • Which one external hard drive is better for my G5's FW800 port?

    Hi,
I use a late G5 under 10.4.11. Last two weeks I used two different Western Digital disks, My Book Studio & My Book Studio Edition II but both of them don't operate well with the FW 800. They conflict with my audio interfaces (FW 400 devices). Only at FW 800. At FW 400 and Usb 2.0 they operate fine.
Because of this I have to replace the WD disk and unfortunatelly I have two options from the store I bought it. And here is that I want your help please.
Which one external hard drive from these two is better for my G5's FW800 port?

    Hi-
I think that looking at your other devices is needed.
Check out the Mackie troubleshooting guide for one:
    http://www.mackie.com/support/documents/TechFAQno.1.pdf
Page 8 has specific suggestions regarding firewire and chipsets.
    The same for the Presonus:
The firewire ports on a Mac (FW400 and FW800) run off the main logic board and share system resources. PreSonus interfaces are designed to be run in series with other firewire peripherals. If you are experiencing erratic performance or pops, clicks, and dropouts, daisy-chain your FW400 peripheral from the secondary firewire port on your PreSonus interface. If you must use a FW800 device, it is recommended to purchase a firewire expansion card for your Mac.
    http://support.presonus.com/entries/119100-optimizing-your-computer-for-audio-ma c-osx
It appears to me that both devices require enough resources that the firewire controller of the G5 may be unable to properly support both FW400 and FW800 transfer rates.
It appears that the bandwidth requirements of the devices are forcing the machine to drop FW800 in lieu of supporting FW400.
Both makers suggest use of third party PCI cards for Firewire 800, and it may be that you need additional power to the firewire card to keep up with the I/O and bandwidth demands being placed on the machines by you audio devices.
You mention that someone told you to not use the Oxford chipset, but the best external drives are all those that have the Oxford chipset.
It is important to note that not all WD MyBook drives have the same chipset, and few of the WD drives have the Oxford chipset.
Asrock and VIA are other chipsets for the WD drives.
VIA is notoriously poor as far as Mac compatibility goes.

  • Whenever I do something which engages my Hard Drive, my Macbook crashes!

I don't know if it is related, but I have recently backed up my Macbook using Time Machine, on an external hard drive which is Time Machine compatible. But a day or so after, whenever I open something which engages the Hard Drive, I get the pinwheel of death. The Internet is the only thing I can seem to open. I can't Spotlight anything, when I try and open iTunes it crashes.
Time Machine has been working absolutely fine, and all back ups went smoothly and the Time Machine interface thing has been working fine.
I had ordered a new internal hard drive prior to these problems, but until that arrives, my laptop is basically un-useable.
Does anyone have any suggestions at all? Its driving me mad!

The first thing I'd suggest is that you boot your computer with the System Restore disk that came with the computer and run the Disk Utility repair. Check out the S.M.A.R.T. report and see if there was any disk damage not repaired. Your problem does sound like it could be a bad drive.
OK cool thankyou. I was going to try that, but I was just wondering if there was anything I could do before trying that. Just so annoying that I can't check the Disk Utility now because I can't seem to access anything.

  • My iMac's hard drive keeps filling up.

My iMac's hard drive keeps filling up. It has 320GB but only 1.37GB free! Other than Photos (3.43GB) and Songs (12.34GB), I have hardly anything installed on it. I recently got the message "Disc almost full...". Everytime I delete something (and I've delete a lot of things now) the free space relentlessly depletes. I have tried searching for files or programs that might be taking up a lot of space but can't find anything unusual or big enough to make a difference. I saw another comment from someone saying it was Mail failed downloads or something like that and suggested changing Finder preferences to "Other" to find the hidden files. But after doing this, I cannot find anything that looks bad. Look at the screenshot below, which shows what's taking up the disc space. How can the "Other" possibly be taking up 297.71GB when there's hardly anything on my mac that's bigger than 1GB!?!? Please help....

Do you own and backup any iDevices?
Anything else you have on this drive?
Any other places you store personal data?
You have any images or photos anywhere else?
You have a lot of documents?
Have you emptied OS X Trash icon recently.
iPhoto has its own trash the needs emptying.
Have you emptied the trash in Apple's Mail app?
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects?
    Good Luck!

  • 27 inch imac's hard drive has failed.

Hi guys my 27 inch imac's hard drive has failed and I need to replace it. it was a seagate 1tb ST31000528AS. Any suggestions what to replace it with.

    No worries,
Any SSD should work I recommend either OWC or Crucial SSDs, but you will still need an aftermarket optical drive temp sensor or the software to slow the fans down.
    I recommend:
    For software: http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/
    Temperature sensor:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-21-5-A1311-Mid-2010-Optical-Drive-Temp-Sensor -Cable-922-9624-/151521177860?
You will also need a bracket to mount it on-http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer+Technology/ADPTADRV/
    iFixit guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2309+and+2374+Hard+Drive+Rep lacement/1634
You will just need to swap out the HDD bracket with the above one mentioned.
    Good Luck
PS: If you are interested in installing it in the 3rd SATA slot or replace the optical drive with an SSD please say so

  • 2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
    Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

  • How big is your imacs formatted hard drive?

Id like to know what the size of other imac users hard drives are in formatted capacity.
I have a 160GB, but its only 148.73 GB. Id like to see what capacity other people are getting, even if its a different sized hard drive.
    Thanks

The size difference comes down to how you define Gigabyte (GB):
    1. For HD manufacturers 1GB = 1000MB = 1000000KB = 1000000000bytes
    2. For a computer 1GB = 1024MB = 1048576KB = 1073741824bytes
    So a 160GB hard drive according to its manufacturer has 160000000000bytes but for a computer that is 156250000KB (160000000000/1024) = 152587MB (156250000/1024) = 149GB (152587/1024)

  • Which external firewire hard drive for protools and imac?

    hello group,
i see many posts about external firewire hard drive issues. i would like to purchase a drive of 7200rpm or faster, 200gb or larger for recording with protools into an imac intel duo 2.0. hopefully theres a brand that i can buy that will just work out of the box. i have no mac troubleshooting skills and wish to avoid any compatability complications. is there a general consensus on a no brainer drive for mac newbies? thanks for any advice.
    jeff

I highly recommend that Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC as well. They are very stable and reliable due to their use of the Oxford 911 chipset and not the more common - and more problematic - Prolific chipset. I also use SuperDuper to make fully bootable clones of my internal drive for backing up everything.
If their history for me and others continues with you, there should be absolutely no troubles for you using an OWC drive and Protools.

  • Which speed internal hard drive should I get for FCP editing on a Mac Book

I am going to buy a new Mac Book Pro notebook to edit a feature documentary with FCP. My footage is all on 7200 rpm G-raid external drives. Question: should I buy the 4200 rpm, 5200 rpm, or 7200 rpm hard drive for the notebook? I really like having more hard drive space - but I want to be able to edit quickly, play back thru my deck to a television, etc as well. Editing is miniDV with typically 4 tracks video + audio. Appreciate hearing from anyone who has direct experienc and has compared.

Instead of focusing on the internal drive, I would
advise getting an ExpressCard/34 firewire card to
create a second FW bus for capturing footage to the
    G-Raid externals.
Hmm, is that better than just using the FW400 port for the camera and the FW800 port for the external harddrive?

  • IMac G3 hard drive upgrade

    I have an iMac G3:
    - slot-load
    - 350MHz
    - 128MB RAM
    - 6GB hard drive
The computer was making a loud noise, which I believed to be the hard drive. I removed the hard drive and connected it externally and it made the same loud noise. I want to replace the hard drive, and I have an unused 120GB 3.5" drive I want to use in my iMac.
My question is, do I need to partition it less than 8GB? Or is that only for the tray-loading iMacs? When I insert the new blank hard drive, do I need to install Mac OS 9 or can I just insert my Mac OS 10.3 Panther disc?
    Thanks.

You don't need a partition under 8GB for your iMac. You're right. That's for tray loaders.
You can install Panther without OS9.
Make sure the drive is set "Master". Check the drive manufacturer's web sit for the jumper configuration if you have questions.
If the drive doesn't show up, boot from your Panther disk and use Drive Setup to initialize the new drive.

  • IMAC Fusion Hard Drive failure, help with data recovery

I've got a Late 2012 iMAC 27 Inches 3.4GHZ with a Fusion 3.1TB HDD. My machine has booting issue the past few weeks and when contacted through Apple Care UK, after a few over the phone diagnostics they wanted me to take the machine over to get the Hard Drive checked. I had transferred some of my vital data from another HDD a few days before that and did not have an up to date backup. When booked in they said the HDD will have to be replaced and they will migrate the data over. But when I collected the machine, they said they couldn't transfer data as 'it didn't mount' and therefore unable to transfer. I was gutted as I have 2 wedding on their which were WIP and had to be delivered to the client in a few days. I have got my old HDD from the apple store...but unable to read data..can you help? Guess as a final resort I'd have to obtain the expensive data recovery services.

    Ouch...
But before going for an expensive data recovery service, you have some other options.
At first you have to get that harddrive connected to your iMac. There are several solutions to that. One is to buy a SATA USB Docking Bay (see picture). You can put the harddisk in it and connect it via USB to your iMac.
Next you'll need recovery software. Disk Utility will probably not help you, but it is worth the try (because it is free and comes with OSX).
A great piece of software to look at is DiskWarrior. It once helped me accessing a dying External Harddisk and got most of the data off it before it really died. There are more applications, just google 'Data Recovery OSX', and you will find a lot more.
Oh, and make sure to start a good back-up plan for the future. Time Machine is great, or Carbon Copy Cloner, and maybe invest in a decent NAS to copy your data on.
    Good luck!
