Which iMovie version to download w/all these synching problems?

I just got a mac mini, and my firewire cable I bought to transfer older videos captured on a Sony TRV350 Digital 8 Handycam will arrive tomorrow.
So I'm bummed to hear that I will most likely have audio/video sync issues when I capture the D8 content onto my new Mac that has the latest iMovie release.
Should I just wait for Apple to fix this bug? Or should I trash the iMovie app and search for an older release?
thanks!

I'll take your word for this, but I believe that the devotees of iMovie '06 claim that the benefit comes during the capturing process. I tried to get this issue (in the true sense of the word) resolved, but as far as we got was this: one side (you, with the agreement of Appleman) claimed that it could not make a difference on theoretical grounds and the other side claimed that as an empirical fact (which they could not explain theoretically) they had repeatedly experienced better results using iMovie '06. They claim to have made direct, repeated comparisons. I myself am stuck in the middle, not knowing how to explain the conflict. Either I misunderstand the issue, or the facts are being misrepresented, or there is a flaw in the theory.

  • Seeing all these little problems, I think I might just return my new MacBook...

I'm a heavy PC user switching over to Mac because of all the hype and positive comments I've heard from others, but seeing all these little problems everyone is having doesn't motivate me to continue.
Few days after I got my MacBook (somewhere else) I took it with me to a Mac Store in the mall. I was excited until I was basically told I wasn't worthy because I got it somewhere else. That made me feel really good. I think I'd rather my PC; I'm just not seeing the real benefits to sinking two grand down on something I could easily get for a fifth of that.
Anyone want to help with my baptism into the world of Mac?

I am being careful not to stub my toes since this is only my sixth day with my newly-entered Mac experience. I like the MacBook so far. I suppose most of my issues are geared towards being a new Mac user, but I am sure functional issues are yet to arise and surprise. I haven't seen many, if any, functional problems yet, probably because I don't know what to look for and Mac is new to me.
I have everything up and running, i.e. emails, internet, etc. I upgraded to Lion (was told I wouldn't have to pay for the upgrade, but I did because I couldn't find the way around the payment button).
I have been through many a PC over the past 15 years and know what I know in terms of programs and their tools, at least the ones I use. Familiar story, perhaps? With Mac it seems I have to relearn everything, as I will explain a little more below. I like having a number pad and both delete and backspace keys. Many of the programs, applications, downloads and software I run on my PC are either not compatible with Mac (and a wheel-less mouse) or they are just not the same in terms of set up and use. For instance, in PC, Firefox allows me to close the program and reopen all my tabs when I come back. Not so in Firefox with Mac, or at least I didn't find that option.
The most improtant factors for my dicision to Mac-Up were primarily
    1. The security
    2. The speed
    3. Creative aid programs
Example- With the PC programs I have used, I was able to simply play and learn. Not so thus far with some of the I-stuff. The tools I know and use everyday with PC programs are there, I just don't know where to look to find them or what they are called.
Example- How do I shutdown a program that doesn't want to shutdown? Searching help to "force shutdown" doesn't produce any solid results.
I went to the store where I purchased my MacBook. While there, another customer was asking about features. I rested my attention over the Mac instructor's shoulder to listen and learn (and a lot I did learn), but I realized that of all the things I was doing with my PC programs, despite having the ability to do the same with Mac programs, they were all called something different and/or used a little bit differently. For example, in MS Pub, its a Transparency tool; in Pages its an alpha tool. Stuff like that. For me, little stuff like that can really eat up a lot of time. It would be different if I was just starting my computer journey, but such is not the case.

  • So out of nowhere my computer gets all these strange problems... Headache

Recently, after having my computer problem-free for quite some time now since the day I bought it, I'm starting to have problems with my Mac. Out of nowhere really, I'm getting several seemingly random problems I'll just go ahead and list:
    - iTunes won't open.. says "an unknown error occurred (13014)"
    - The Spotlight search function in the top-right corner is gone
    - Can't change my desktop background
    - Can't drag & drop icons on desktop or toolbar
    Among other problems...
Even more, when I entered my OS X Installation disc it wouldn't allow me to reinstall it. Then when I go to eject the CD, it won't allow it to come out. Very strange indeed... Like I said before, my Mac was problem-free until now. I had none of these strange problems until just the other day.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

If you are under warranty, make a Genius Bar appointment and take it in.
You should also try running Repair Permissions from Applications/ Utilities/ Disk Utility.
If you really cannot get your install disc to load, try starting in single-user mode and running the fsck command:

    Good luck!

Maybe if some details were provided about what happens when trying to sync then assistance could be offered to get it working.
Without details of the problem, there is little to nothing that we can offer for assitance.

  • Not sure which express version to download

I am first-time downloading the free express edition 10g I think. Two editions, Western European (single-byte) and Universal (unicode) are available. I live in the United States, Arizona - which version should I choose? From the documentation, it looks like the Western European version but I would like to know for sure before I install. thanks, anne

    Welcome to the forums !
The WE version is capable of storing data in most Western languages. If you plan to store data in Oriental (double-byte) languages (like Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc), you will need the UTF8 version.
Pl see the description of the two versions on the download page - http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/htdocs/102xewinsoft.html
Some more info is in the Developer Guide too - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/appdev.102/b25108/xedev_global.htm#CIHDCDGH

  • Which Java Version to Download

    Hi,
I need to download Java and I can see the J2SE and J2EE in the sun download site. Which one should I get? What is the difference between the two?
I remember downloading Java before and it was J2SDK and I can't find that version. What is the SDK version?
    Thanks,
    -Ray

SDK is the 'core' of what you need to program in java. It contains the compiler and various tools that are prerequisites, and some important libraries that you will probably need in any area of java. On top of that you can get extensions, and extra libraries to... umm extend the development capability of your setup. J2EE does like webby stuff such as JSP, servlet, XML type twiddling etc., and is one such extension (thats prob not the correct term for it, but it helps for understanding). J2ME is confusingly not like this! It is a cut-down set of libraries for use on very limited architecture such as mobile devices.
Get the SDK first, as it is essential. You don't need anything else initially.

  • Which CS6 version to download?

I have volunteered at a local non-profit to convert their systems from XP to Windows 7 which entails reinstalling their applications, one of which is Adobe CS6. However, because of the age of the systems and personnel turnover, the installation media no longer exist, so I will have to download CS6 in order to re-install it. The PC running CS6 has the following installed in the Program Files\Adobe folder:
    Acrobat 10.0
    Adobe Bridge CS6
    Adobe Dreamweaver CS6
    Adobe Extension Manager CS6
    Adobe Fireworks CS6
    Adobe Flash CS6
    Adobe Help
    Adobe Illustrator CS6
    Adobe InDesign CS6
    Adobe Media Encoder CS6
    Adobe Photoshop CS6
    Adobe Utilities - CS6
    Adobe Widget Browser
    Flash Player
    Reader 11.0
Looking at the descriptions of the various suites on the CS6 FAQ page at adobe.com/products/cs6/faq.html  I'm guessing that I should download Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium. Could someone please confirm this?  I'd hate to download and install it only to discover that their Product Key doesn't work.
    Thanks...

Looks like Web and Design Premium

  • All these issues/problem's with Macbook

How long should one wait for them to be debugged before its safe to purchase one?

I wrote this under a different Post. It addresses your perplexity.
Review ~After reading all the complaints - and receiving my own Black Macbook
    by Wayne Crooke
After ordering my black notebook (actually, an Apple Store refurbished one), I read many online comments and complaints which gave me considerable trepidation. Since receiving my Macbook this week however, I’ve been closely inspecting and putting it through it’s paces, and after several days, I can report high satisfaction and none of the anticipated problems.
It runs about 98 degrees fahrenheit after 1/2 hour of use in the office (According to the Fujitsu Smart Disk Widget which I downloaded for free).
The magsafe connection is NOT hot.
    The case is NOT misaligned.
    NO MOOING or whining.
The fan is NOT loud. It’s barely a whisper, when it comes on. (I prop up the Macbook at the back to let air circulate underneath.)
The shiny screen IS great! So much brighter with gorgeous colors, than my previous 13” iBook.
The size/weight IS perfect to fit the hand and be carried about.
I am using my harman/kardon speakers, wireless keyboard and mouse, and will buy a 23” Dell screen for about $650 for use in the home office. So the warm keyboard/mouse will NOT be an issue for me. The reported sharp edge hurting the edge of the palms mystifies me. With my fingers on the keyboard, the edge is several inches distant from the rear of my hands... and my hands are normal size???
The black matte finish is nice. NO FLAKING anywhere.
The optical player DOES NOT scratch my DVD’s.
512 megs of ram is NOT enough. I tried zooming about the globe to various spots in Google Earth, and it became jerky, sputtered, and nearly stopped. If I open several programs at the same time, the last one opened slows down to a crawl. (I’ve ordered 2 gigs of ram from a 3rd party for about half of Apple’s price.)
The REMOTE and FRONT ROW is GREAT.
PHOTO STUDIO is GREAT also. What more can be said?
The refurbished model did NOT come in the original packing. Too bad.
I’m sorry for those folks who reported the problems, but I am now reassured that they are most likely in the small, unfortunate minority, and not the normal experience. Those reported problems should not stop anyone from buy a new Macbook. It is by far the best machine I’ve ever owned.

  • What's with all these UK Problems!

Sounds like the majority of you live in the UK. You are aware that a 3g equipped tower can only send its signal out a few miles before dissipating. If you live near an urban center say Los Angeles or London you shouldn't have any problems at all so really most of these signal complaints are from those of you that simply live in poorly equipped areas. Call ATT and complain about their lack of 3g equipment in your area. Also, 3g has difficulty in penetrating steel and concrete structures so if you are in an office there's your problem.

If I stand outside my house with 2.0.2 I was getting 1 bar and an unreliable connection. Now I get 4 bars and an unreliable connection.
But there is a 3G mast 1 km in one direction and another about 600m away in another direction. I'm in a low-rise residential area.

  • Why won't HP fix all these speaker problems, brand new laptop & doesn't work

Whats wrong with HP and why won't they help there customers???  They state theres no other record of speaker issues but thats all that seems to be on the forum is speaker issues!!!  Brand new $2000.00 laptop, right out of the box and it has these popping and crackiling on start up and shut down.    BUYER BEWARE!!!

I am going to assume that you have either taken the laptop back or exchanged it for a working one. Most stores have a 30 day window where you can do this. If you haven't done any of this, then you should. Don't waste your time on a machine that you have just paid 2000.00 $ on.
If you exchange it for a new one, try the laptop out in the store and make their problem. They may have a bad batch.
if they won't let you try it first, then get a refund and shop some place else.
Another thing that I like to do is if I am shopping on line I use my Visa card. Visa protects me against fraudulent on line sellers
(pay-pal won't). Always save the paper trail when you do a Visa purchase. It can be used to prove fraud.
I bought a LG DVD player on line and the company would not honour there 30 day return policy. I returned it any way and more than 30 days went buy. I saved everything and Visa told me what they needed and after a while my money was refunded along with all the shipping charges.
Pay-pal will only protect you against goods not received, but not the quality of goods. That means you could receive a brick in the mail and pay-pal won't do any thing.

  • Which Oracle Version to D/L?

    I am so frustrated.
I don't know which oracle version to download.
I have oracle enterprise 9i, but it doesn't have formsbuilder, jdeveloper, query builder etc...
a frienf of mine recently d/l oracle9i, I don't know which ver, but he said it came with
    all of the above.
My problem is this, I could go and download all of the above seperately..but do you how much
Gigs, that's gigabytes of HDD space this will take up?
Right now oracle is consuming a whopping 2 gigs+ of HDD space.
If I download the collaboration suite, it's another Gig for d/l and who knows how big after decompression.
I feel strongly about now wasting another full 2 gigs of space...
my aquantence, rather, not really a friend, his oracle installation is only taking up 1.8+ gigs of space.
    Why the drastic Difference?
I am wondering if anyone here knows of a decent d/l that contains all of the oracle software:
SQl*Plus, Form Builder, Query Builder, Jdeveloper etc... in one single package?
    thank you for your time.

This is not a FAQ. Please do not use the FAQ type unless you are posting the answer to a commonly asked question.
Forms, Reports, etc comes in the Oracle 9i Developer Suite. This is available for download from OTN. Follow Downloads > Developer Suite. They are separate downloads because they are aimed at different communities. Many people who want the database - DBAs, PL/SQL app programmers - have no interest in Forms, etc. Conversely many pople who want the development tools don't want to install a database on their desktop.
I don't know how big the 9iDS zip is, but the total installation eats up about 1.9 gigabytes. This is a corollary of Parkinson's Law: software expands to fill the hard disk storage available.
    Cheers, APC

  • Is there a command which I can use to dump all the configurations as I set out in System Preferences on the Server?

    Hi folks,
I am planning to reinstall OS X 10.6 on my Mac Server.  As such I need to collect all the configurations like User Account, User Password, File Sharing... which all are previously setup in the System Preferences.
Instead of writing them down on paper, is there a command which I can execute to dump all these data to a file so that I can refer to them easily?

I support Mac OS X Server at some schools, so I run it as a Home Server.
I do not understand your question.
Server is a package of additions that runs with Mac OS X as if it were part of the Operating System (login is not required for Server components to start up). It is not a wildly different Operating System. There is even an Installer package that allows you to ADD the server componets to an already-installed Mac OS X
User information such as Preferences are stored in a /Users/<user_name>.
This does not change after you install Server, but you can move the Users folder elsewhere, or you can move the Users accounts to an Open Directory database.
