Which install disk do I need and how do I purchase it?

I bought this computer used and put a new hard drive in it. Now I need to know which install disk will work on it and where to obtain it from. Thanks!

Congratulations on your new computer. I concur with Niel that you should contact the person from whom you purchased the computer and ask about the install disk as well as the Apple Hardware Test Disk.
If you are not successful in getting the seller to supply the disk(s) you have a couple of options:
• You can call Call Apple Customer Service (1-800-767-2775) for original disks. Be sure that you have your computer Serial number handy. There is a service fee for this, about $60 the last I heard.
• You second option is to purchase new install disks. Your computer shipped with Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8E45)). However, your computer easily meets the the technical specifications for Leopard, which you can purchase for about the same, or even less, than you would pay for Tiger. Leopard can be purchased at The Apple Store for $129. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales 1-800-692-7753.

You have an 24" Early 2008 iMac. It came with Mac OS X 10.5, and you would need the disk set for your specific model. It's possible that if you call Apple Support, they can still sell you a set, but that model of iMac is no longer supported by Apple so Support may not be able to help. If not, then you'll need to look to private sellers or companies that sell obsolete software.
You can also call the online Apple Store and purchase a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

I bought an airport base station, and found that my 2004 ibook G4 cannot go wireless. I called apple, and they said to buy a card on ebay and installing it won't be too hard. You will need the original Airport card and not an Airport Extreme card.
That is incorrect. The iBook G4 requires the AirPort Extreme card.

No it does not!
Windows and MS Office are two independent products. You will either have to buy an MS-office-license for your needs or you apply to office 365, you can activate up to 5 licenses at a time with your account and e.g. use them for the Parallels-Windows and for the native Office for Mac at the same time.
Office 365 comes in for approx 80€ a year, so if you need more than one license it is the better deal.

Forgot Password Only have install disks for 10.4 and disk #2 for 10.5

I was playing around on my macbook last night and changed my password to a password that i always use for just about everything and when i changed it worked because i had to logout cause something froze and safari was really messed up so when i logged in the new password worked but a few minutes later i was trying out some really old app from like 10.2 or something like that and it froze everything except finder so i tried to force quit and that wasn't working so i logged out and that froze too. So then i had to hold the power button down to shut it down and after i got it back up and running i tired to login with the new password i made earlier and it rejected it. I tried my old password and some really old passwords i tried caps and some of the words capital and it still didn't work. So then i was reading some other forms of people that forgot their password and stuff like that and most of them said to boot up with the install disk so i did and i did the password reset utility and it still didn't work. It said this volume can not be found or something like that. Then i realized that i had the disks from 10.4.0 and I tried to find my 10.5.0 ones and i only found disk #2 and for some reason it wasn't working when i tried to do it so then i was reading more forms about booting up in single user mode my doing Apple-S and i typed in the codes and they didn't work cause they were for 10.4.x and i heard they changed something like that in the security update that i installed so i have a big problem. I either need some hacked way of doing it or a new updated code. I will try to find my other disk and try to do it again but i know where it is its all the way up in canada at a place i own there . If there is a new code that would be Great. Or if there is some way i can download Mac OSX and burn it onto a CD or DVD because i am on the windows vista side of my mac now typing this. If anyone can't figure this out i will soon call apple. Thanks for helping. Bye

Single User Mode will work in Leopard, unless the MacBook has been properly secured, or corrupted in a more fundamental way. Were the instructions from a credible source? I am reluctant to post the instructions here, as they are a powerful weapon in the hands of the unscrupulous.
I am confused about one thing: the Leopard retail distribution usually comes on one DVD. The only time people get two disks (AFAIK) is the System Restore disks that come with a computer that ships with Leopard. From the sound of things, yours shipped with Tiger.
I don't recommend downloading OS X. You never know what you might be getting!

In this file, for example, there are:
ProjectName1: string1, string7… string10, date1
ProjectName2: string11, string15… string20, date2
ProjectNamek: string 100, string 116 … string 140, date1
I know only one thing: one of the strings.
What I need to find in the file:
I need to find the string at one of these rows and get its ProjectName and date.
For example: if I have string15,
I should find string15 in the file, and get its ProjectName and date:
ProjectName2, date2
Which file type should I use and how I use it? What is the best solution?

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive? If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

You can upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and then, you should be able to use OS X Lion.
First, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then, make a backup of your data, insert the Snow Leopard disc and upgrade to Snow Leopard.
The disc will install Mac OS X 10.6.3, so open  > Software Update to install 10.6.8, the most recent Snow Leopard version.

I want to use skype to make calls to land line/mobile numbers in the United States of America. Id like to be able receive calls as well. I don't really care about text msgs as that can be handled in other programs, but if its cheap ill do that thru skype as well.

First thing.... sign up for the Unlimited USA & Canada subscription. You can get it for US$ 2.99/month, or a year at a time with a 15% discount. Once you have the subscription, you can purchase an Online Number in the USA. There are numbers available in most US states and area codes. The numbers cost US$ 18/3 months or US$ 60/year, but you get a 50% discount on the online number if you already have a subscription.
With this, you essentially get a Skype account that can receive calls with a US telephone number, and make unlimited calls (subject to Skype's fair-use policy) to landline and mobile phones in the USA and Canada, for around US$ 60/year - or about US$ 5/month. You can't check your usage on the iCloud website - you have to do this from the iCloud prefs pane, which you don't have. If you are only using it for email you would have to be storing an awful lot of messages to exceed 5GB. If you are concerned about this you can download some of them to your Mac and off iCloud.
To do this simply create a folder under 'On My Mac', go to the iCloud mailbox, select some of the messages and drag them to the folder you created. Don't try to do too many at once (say more than 100) and allow time for them to download.
If you haven't yet set Mail up to access iCloud, but are simply using the website, you can set it up as detailed here:

If you do decide to upgrade, the latest version of iPhoto is only £10.49, though MS Office is more of a problem. But you can go on as you are as long as your Mac holds out - Snow Leopard is a good solid system.
