Which Intel Mac for Music Recording, Please?

Hi--
I'm brand new here. I'm a music professional who is in the middle of switching my recording setup toan Intel Mac-based studio, running either Logic Pro or Digital Performer (once it's ready for Intel Macs, that is).
I've got an indie filmscoring job coming up--my second. The first was done without a computer--never again!
I require some meqasure of portability--I'll be travelling between San Diego and central Mexico a few times throughout the process, either driving or occasionally flying.
So last week I ordered a MacBook Pro 17" notebook with a 2.16 Ghz processor, a 100 gig, 7200 rpm drive and 2 gigs of RAM. I have been assured by friends and contascts in the filmscoring word that this is enough horsepower to run the applications I'll need to run (mostly the recording and sequencing software, plus Quick Time).
However...I just bought my wife a 17" Intel iMac. Whoa. What a cool machine! Looking at the specs, I see it has a 1.83 Ghz dual processor, a 160 gig drive (don't know the speed offhand) and while it only comes with 512 mb of RAM I know it's upgradable to at least 2 gigs, right?
So my question is this: is the performance going to be higher on a suped-up iMac than the suped-up MacBookPro? Does anyone have an educated guess about this? The notebook has a faster processor, but...it is a laptop with a laptop drive, which are typically not as fast as a desktop drive from what I understand.
Many thanks!
Doug

If I may wade in--
Strictly speaking from a travel/immigration perspective, you are less likely to have trouble with Mexican Customs with the MacBook Pro than with the iMac 17" or 20". The immigration laws allow foreigners to enter with a personal portable computer duty free. Something as large as an iMac is possibly tempting to a corrupt official, whether they are eying it for themself or as a opportunity to pocket a chunk of change to allow you to bring it in. We have a presidential election in July, and I have noticed the old corruption creeping back in at the borders and internal customs check points that existed pre-Vicente Fox. Corrupt agents going back to the good-old-days, when it was common to supplement one's monthly salary any way one could. Do yourself a favor and go powerful, and yet less conspicuous.

  • Which Macbook should I buy for music recording and production?

I'm a musician and I would really like a Mac for my recording and production. I'm going to be going to college in Australia next summer, so I need something a little more compact. I'm thinking 13 inch. I was looking at this Macbook pro Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 with Retina Display - Apple Store (U.S.). Keep in mind that I do not have all of the money in the world, as I am just a college student. Thank you for your help!

The 13" MBAir could be lighter to tote and the extra $100 to upgrade the RAM to 8GB's is well worth the investment and handle all the tasks you mentioned.

  • W520 Replace DVD with another Hard Drive and IEEE 1394 spec for music recording

To increase the performance, I am taking the 160 GB SSD instead of the mechanical drive. Obviouslt, I need more space than this. I don't care about the DVD rom. It can't play blu ray anyway. Is it possible to replace the dvd drive with a hard drive? Where can I get a replaceable drive for this? What do I do with the DVD? Can I sell it back?
I need to do music recording with this. I was wondering about the IEEE 1394 spec; the latency etc. If I remember correctly the W510 IEEE1394 was very good, probably was manufactured by Texas Instruments. I could not find anything about it anywhere. Not even here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Also, a bit worried about the sound card. How good is it? Did anyone use this laptop for music recording?

    hey udvranto,
with regard to this, i would suggest contacting tech support via the number listed in the link below to check if it is possible to replace the dvd with your harddrive.
    http://www.lenovo.com/contact/us/en/
on the part of the soundcard, I believe it is good for music recording. Though this really depends on the software that you're going to use to record.

  • Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

The MacBook Pro has higher specifications, depending
on the model, and then CTO additional upgrades.
The Air does not have a Retina display, but has lesser
specs, so that may make a difference. They still offer a
    low-end MB/Pro w/ optical drive, w/o Retina; specs vary;
it may work in your instance. You'd have 14 days to take
a new Apple computer back, so keep that in mind.
    Good luck!

It's not uncommon for it to not work the first time and sometimes, you have to try it a few times. Turn off your antivirus software and your firewall while you are trying to restore the iPad. Enable them again after you restore.
If that still won't work, post back with detailed information as to what exactly does happen as you go through the process.

  • Buying a new Macbook Pro for music recording, should I upgrade the RAM or Processor?

As the title states, I'm looking into buying a new Macbook (15 inch) for music recording. Should I upgrade the processor or the RAM memory?

Purchase it with the faster CPU.  RAM may be increased later via third party chips at much lower cost if and when required.

  • Using PC for Podcasts & Mac for music

Hi, I have an ipod 30 - love it.
I'd like to use my mac for music updates and PC for podcasts.
WHY would I want to do this?
    1. My mac is a G3 10.2.8 and it rejects the majority of video podcasts - my local mac shop says "yes, that is common."
    2. I like having my music on the MAC as it is portable - the PC is a desktop. (plus the mac looks cool in the loungeroom.)
So I formatted my ipod for PC - uploaded all my PC podcasts (successfully) and then moved to my mac to get my music (successfully).
    PROBLEM
When I go back to my PC to get Podcast updates, it asks if it can wipe all my music. i can't find the option to just update podcasts.
    Any thoughts?
    ipod 30 - G3 mac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Surprise Surprise . It worked!
I simply re visited the same process (see above)
    and it worked.
TIPS: When Windows asks to be the Music library, say NO - it will then up date your podcasts.
NOTE: when you update your music on the MAC, it will wipe your podcasts - simply return to the PC and upload podcasts.

  • Nyone using the MBP 13 for music recording?

    Hi all!
Anyone using the MBP 13 for music recording?
I have the late 2008 MBP but is considering the new MBP 13.
I wonder if the MBP 13 can handle Logic pretty well or using it live for VSTs.
    Thanks!!

    Glenn,
I just bought the 2.4 so i shall answer your question from the perspective of a macbook 2.0(1stgen) owner.
I spend almost six months a year gigging in europe.
My "Books" are my life line to creativity.
    My 2.0 had 2gig ram&7200 rpm 100gig HD.
In logic pro the last song recorded had 32 audio tracks, 8 virtual synths, effects on each channel and also effects on the stereo outputs. ALL were recorded on the internal drive. I also carry a 7200 rpm 100 gig SATA 2.5 drive and ext fw800 case. This i bought from owc. I do suggest you replace the 5400 ext&case. The firewire 800 was the #1 reason i bought this new machine. Hope this answers your question, jeff www.jeffreyabbott.com

  • Mac for music studio use

I run a mac dual2Ghz for use in my production companies studio.
I'm going to be upgrading to an intel mac pro... I usually get a top of the line mac so it lasts a number of years. Looking at the macs available at the moment though will I really benefit from the extra power the 3.2Ghz gives over the 2.8Ghz?
I intend to be running large sample libraries (200gig) and running audio applications.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Mike

From a purely mixing point of view my current 2Ghz mac is fine, it's more the large sample libraries I'm worried.
I need to be able to load a hefty amount of samples and keep the buffers down so I don't get too much latency.

From one session bean i call the entity bena passing the objet
into the entity bean (interface) i have one methods:

                        personaLocal.setT56aaat04(obj);
Please can you help me to solve this problem?

    Hello Werner,
The mappings seem to be alright at a first glance.
Have you tried out un- and redeploying your application? Sometimes values appear to be cached in the server. So if you have deployed the application before you entered DB_BANK as alias this might solve the problem...

  • Are these specs overkill for music recording/video editing?

I haven't made any purchases yet... I'm still in the planning stages. I just need your opinion on this.
I plan on making high quality recordings using an iMac, Logic (whatever the newest one is), and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 interface.
I customized my iMac and I'm just curious whether or not these specs are overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish.
    27 inch
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Pages
    Apple USB SuperDrive
    Accessory Kit
    total: $2,447.99
I also plan to use this computer for video editing, so if you know anything about good specs for that feel free to let me now if this would be the right amount or too much. However, is this more than enough or overkill for the recording aspect?

Totally agree with mende 1 on this.
The 27 inch model is best for what you want to do.
Also, for video editing, you really need the fastest CPU and as much RAM as you can afford.
As I stated, either the 1 or 2GB VRAM GPU will be fine for video work.
If you decide to delve into doing video work and editing, I would, also, recommend at some later date, purchasing a couple of ext. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt hard drives to assist with the workflow.
Having raw video footage on external hard drives leaves the iMac's internal drive optimized for doing the actual software video tasks by not loading up the internal drive with lots of raw, high GB video footage.
You can, also, store audio projects, iTunes and iPhoto libraries on ext. hard drives, as well.

  • Is it possible to sync an iPhone to one mac for music only and another mac for everything else? What about shared iPhoto?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my iphone and that of my wife.
Our set up is that we share music that is on my imac under my apple store id.  We also like to have all of our photos in iphoto on that imac.
She has her own macbook and I'd like to use icloud to sink her personal bookmarks, calendar and other stuff.
I've thought about seeing if I could set her phone up to sync with icloud as appropriate, turn on wireless sync on her imac for syncing everything but music, then sync that same iphone on the imact but just sync music.
I've tried to point her macbook to my imac itunes library and that doesn't seem to be working very well.
The other wrinkle is that she is taking photos on her iphone that I'd like to show up in our shared iphoto library and photo stream.  Currently we have our individual icloud apple ids so we may sync our own bookmarks and such and we use a separate "store" id for music and apps and such.  I'm not sure I see a way for me to merge iphotos into a shared library/stream?
    1.  Any thoughts on the best way to manage two iphones, each with their own computer, but a shared music library?
    2. Any thoughts on the best way to merge iphoto?
I've been experimenting with setups and I have a feeling folks with more experience have probably worked this out better than the way I'm thinking of doing.
    Thanks.

  • Needing Intel-Mac for AVCHD feature in Final Cut Express?

Hi, I was about to install Final Cut Express 4 when I noticed a tiny warning saying that the AVCHD required Intel-chip Mac. that seems crazy so I'm hoping someone can tell me it's not true???
I have an older imac (2004 or 2005), definitely not an Intel, and I need the AVCHD to import from my camcorder, Canon Vixia HF20, in fact the AVCHD is the only reason I'm considering "upgrading" to Express 4 (I currently have Final Cut Studio 5.0.4) I am also open to alternative suggestions besides FPX such as imovie if you know it works. I only have imovieHD 5.0.2 and was able to mount camera but see only jpgs, no movies. please help!!!

there IS an option for nonIntels.. :
Voltaic, http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd , 35$, which allows a 'manual' conversion of such codecs on your hardware.. timeconsuming, slow (=conversion process, editing no problem), less convenient..
.. you get older Intel MacMinis 'cheap'..

  • Which is faster for music production? internal hard drive or external drive

hey there. simple question. i'm looking to run music poductin software on an apple mac - would sound files be retrieved faster from a new mac book pro internal hard drive or an external drive? (am thinking one of those lacie orange rugged things that spin at 7200 rpm)
and if the sound files would play better coming form the internal hard drive, would it compromise processor speed for running soft synths / effects units etc etc?
please note am not talking about my current mac book, but a new mac book pro
chanx in advance - horton ;o)

For what it is worth here is my tuppence worth on the subject, horton. (and a warm welcome to the forums , by the way!)
One of the major reasons why many sound professionals (and others worried about speed) use fast external FW800 or (when possible) eSata drives for their work, rather than the internal drive of an MBP or the like, is that the internal boot drive is already carrying the OS and a bunch of apps on its fast, outer sectors. It is usually doing a fair bit of work keeping things running, too. An external FW 800 drive can be kept unencumbered of such things.
On top of this the 2.5" drives in notebooks are slower at the best of times than 3.5" drives. If you want real speed, my suggestion would be that you keep the internal drive for your OS and Apps as much as possible, and get a fast 7200 rpm 3.5" FW800 external with its own power supply for your sound files (assuming you will have access to mains power).
If you use the internal for this sort of purpose too, you are going to find that the internal fills up fast, that it soon develops free space fragmentation issues, and that it gradually slows to the speed of mollasses!
    Cheers
