Which iPad should I get? (iPad gen 3 vs mini)

Hi all, I've been saving up for an iPad for a while and am now considering which one to get. My first choice was the 32GB wifi/3G mini ($829NZD), but a refurbished gen 3 iPad with the same GB and connectivity specs ($715NZD) is slightly better for my budget... So now I'm a bit torn and need your help! Is the mini's size really worth $114 more? Its primary purposes would be PDF annotation and reading (most of my classes at my level and degree are shifting away from using textbooks and giving us PDF format, independent readings) as well as note taking in class with an attachable keyboard. I would also probably do some VERY light word processing on it, and plan to use it as an e-reader for books and comics, as well as the regular stuff like email and social networking. With those uses in mind, which would you recommend for me? Also, I don't mind that much about having the super latest model or not - as long as it will still support iOS updates for the next few years, which is one of my concerns about getting the 3rd gen iPad. Thanks in advance!

If you also want to use it as a watch and like the clip get the 6th Generation.
If you want to have a bigger screen, watch videos, and use Bluetooth without a dongle get the 7th Generation.

  • The New Ipad (Ipad3) Case which one should I get?

I'm purchasing and Ipad3 and I'm looking for a good sturdy case.  I have a 5 year old that will be playing with it so I'm sure it will be dropped on occasion.  I was thinking about an otterbox but I saw one for kids as well.  I just don't know whats best
and if its worth paying the extra money for the otterbox.  Any suggestions are welcomed!!

I'm always amazed to see parents handing a $600 device to someone who has little responsibility.  I've seen too many parents yelling at their kids when an iPad falls on the cement getting out of a car.  Even my iPad has protective skins to keep scratches away.  Yes, the back of my iPad as a big dent from falling on an office chair leg.
I say yes get the Otterbox, unless you plan to be buying a new device every few weeks.  The slippery aluminum back is not forgiving.

In addition to a cracked screen, a fall on the edge risks warping the aluminum back, making glass replacement complicated.

  • Which computer should I get?

    Hello,
I'm setting up to make my first independent movie, and I'm planning on using an Apple instead of a PC. So, my question is -- because I'm new to the Apple World -- should I go with a MacBook Pro or a G5?
Also, I'm using the Panasonic HVX-200.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I was in pretty much the same spot as you are right now 18months ago, and I got loads of good advice on this forum. Hope you'll be just as lucky. So here's the little I can offer you:
yes, I'd definitely get more RAM, OSX tends to run a lot smoother when you don't starve it of RAM. On the G5s I'm working on, I've got 4.5GB each, which works great. Maybe you'd need less, if you're only editing on your Macs, but as soon as you have After Effects or Photoshop or DVD Studio, for example, open at the same time as Final Cut, you will certainly enjoy the fact that you've got more RAM.
I don't know what format you will be shooting and editing on, but bear in mind that while Final Cut takes all sorts of material (DV/SD/HD), you have at your disposal only the firewire port to get the stuff into your system and onto your harddrives. If you plan on using DigiBeta tapes, for example, you would then need a capture card to be able to capture the material and work with it.
In addition to that, you will need additional harddrives. Which is easy if you buy the G5 (and the QuadG5s are veeeeery powerful indeed.....), simply get an additional HD, which will work nicely with DV stuff and even on a simple level for 8bit SD. At least it did for me. If you go for the MacBook Pro, you will have to buy an external harddrive. One thing the guys on this forum will always tell you is to NEVER EVER use your harddrive where your system and your applications reside as the harddrive where you keep your captured material. Did I say never ever? Oh, I meant NEVER EVER EVER. Did it once, and I learnt my lesson.
And while I'm talking about harddrives, same applies as with the capture cards. For DV material, you don't need a super-fast RAID solution, a firewire HD does the job just as well. If you want to use SD or even HD material, then you need drives that are a lot faster.
Oh, and then you might consider getting a nice mixer, some speakers to monitor your audio, and maybe a tape deck.
Hm, gotta get back to work, hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • 1st g or 2nd g- which one should I get?

I like to know which is better and last longer and wont have much issues
    A. 1st g ipod touch
    or
    B. 2nd genertion ipof touch
I like to know I dont know which one I want, and I like to hear it from a person who know what there talking about and who knows alot about ipod touch
    reply back real soon
    I need to know

    Hi Karchi again,
Well, the 2nd Generation iPod has more functionalities and at the same price! I think you should get the 2nd Generation iPod, for this reasons:
    1) Is brand new, had slight redesigns, same price and several new functionalities;
    2) It would be difficult to see the previous iPod on sale in stores... Only using eBay or something!
    3) Issues are normally related with software and not with hardware. So this means that both iPods will always have the bugs...
    Hope this helps!

  • Which one should I get 13inch or 15inch MBP

Hello everyone, I am about to make the switch from pc to a mac and I need help on which mac is best for me. I never had mac before, this is my first time. I am going to college. I will be using in college and using the mac for web surfing, itunes and doing homework.
Do they both 13inch and 15inch get very hot?
I don't know why Im lover with 15 but I am familiar in the differences with the 13 and 15 inch but cannot decide on which is best for me..........Any help or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

web surfing, itunes and doing homework.
For doing that and being mobile a lot at school, I would go with the 13", or you may even consider a MacBook Air lighter weight.
They all heat up depending upon what you are doing, but just surfing (except watching video) and doing your homework (word processing), any of them should run quite cool.

  • IPod Cover.. which one should I get?

I've had my 30GB Black Video iPod for almost a week now, and it barely has any scratches, but I still want to get a case/screen-protector so it won't get anymore. I heard that the iSkins are good (they look good too), and they just came out with new skins/cases for the iPod nano, but not yet for the new Video iPods.
Should I just wait for those to come out.. or is there anyother skins/screen-protectors/cases that you'd suggest?
    Thanks!

I'm looking myself. I'm leaning toward a zcover - had a guy at Best Buy recommend one to me (I don't think they carry them). He had one for his 4th gen iPod - and he loved it.
...in the meantime, I've put a clear sheet of Static Cling over the front of mine - and that works very well - can't hardly tell there's anything there. Doesn't protect the back - but that's okay with me for now - I just want to make sure the screen doesn't get scratched. I run a decal company, so I've got the good stuff - not sure where one could find some retail - maybe a craft or sticker shop?
    Good luck-

  • Which iphone should i get

Ok guys.  I'm usually the last to adopt to new technology.  I'm just now thinking about getting an iphone.  So what should my "iphone lifestyle" look like to warrant getting the 32 GB or 64 GB instead of the 16GB?

It all comes down to what you think you'll want.
I have a 64gb 4S but thats mainly because i like to have and watch alot of content on my phone when im away.
However before i had a 32gb 3GS which was perfectly fine for what i needed.
If im honest i would never recomend the 16gb model, just because so many more apps now are using more memory due to the A5 chip and Retina display therefore you will run out of space fast.
To add to that with the 8MP camera on the 4S the images will be bigger, therefore you wont be able to take as many shots and keep them on your phone for a longer period of time.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which Mac should i get?

I have just started to get into iSO App development. I mostly create websites so I'm thinking about taken that knowledge over to iSO.
Basically I would be making simple light weight apps, no games or anything like that. So my question is which would be the best option for a first time mac buyer to go with?
I been looking at the MacBook Pro 13-inch: 2.3 GHz and the MacBook Air 11-inch : 128GB.
I really like the MacBook Air but I want to know if it would be enough to do the things i wish to do.

    Hi Armor
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I recall 20 years ago working on projects where build times were measured in minutes and hours! That taught you patience, and also gave plenty of opportunity for thinking and coffee. On any modern computer, it's hard to conceive of a project so large and complex that it will require more than a few seconds to perform a build, which means that you don't really need to consider how powerful is its processor, or how much memory it has, since any reasonable system will perform well.
That means that your choice of options depends upon other factors. I'd avoid the MB Air because of its lack of connectivity, and it has no CD/DVD drive. My own choice of 13" MB works well for development, but from time to time I do wish for a larger screen; however, I find that careful layout of windows using multiple Spaces can ease the situation somewhat. If you go for a larger screen notebook, the computer gets heavier and more unwieldy. A number of my colleagues who opted for 17" MBPs a few years ago have often complained about the weight, and at least one of them has "downsized" to a smaller screen.

  • Which iMac Should I Get?

Ok, well apple rolled out the new iMac today, and I'm looking for a new computer to buy within the next few months. I really need a fast computer, because I mostly work from home. I build iPhone, iPad, and Mac applications, as well as website for my customers. I don't work alone though, I have a whole group spread across the US, and we contact each other through the internet. So what I'm saying here is that I need my internet to work fast, my computer to work fast, and to be able to hold a lot of information, AFter comparing the two models I can't decide between, it comes down to the 27-inch: 2.7GHz, and the 27-inch 3.1GHz. And the only other difference between the two is the AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB, and AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB.
Now is such a small difference worth $300?

The 3.1 GHz i5 configuration includes the AMD 6970M with 1 GB GDDR5 memory; the 2.7 GHz i5 is the AMD 6770M with 512 MB GDDR5 memory.  So it’s twice the memory and a faster graphics card.
There are other factors you can consider upgrading though if you have considerable demands on your system.  For instance, you would likely see improvements adding more main memory, say at least 8 GB of RAM, in either CPU option.  You did not mention the i7 3.4 GHz option, but I would go with that in your situation as it sounds like you can use the faster processor and the hyper-threading in the i7.  Just add $200.  Enjoy your new machine!

  • Which one should I get? Radeon HD 6770 or Geforce GTX 550 Ti ?

I've been told over the years that Nvidia has better support for Linux. But how are the (official) Linux drivers for both cards ? Right now I have a choice between Palit GTX 550 Ti and MSI HD 6770 for about the same amount of money.
While Palit offers 2 a year warranty, and MSI offers 3, I tend to go with the Radeon because I already have an onboard Geforce 7025 (for "just in case") and the official drivers are ok.
Any advice would be most welcome.

DSpider, this has been discussed a lot. Have you searched the forums? Nobody is going to be able to give you advice on exact specific models as they themselves would have had to compare them to know what works.
To get a general idea, search the forums and you will find multiple threads trying to figure out whether they should buy an ATI card or a NVidia.

  • Which Macbook should i get help

    Hello guys,
I finally want to buy a MacBook but i have a big problem because i dont  know which version to get. I can only afford one of those 3
    First would be a
    11 2gb Ram 64gb SSD from 2011
    11 4gb 128gb SSD Late 2010
    or a 13 2gb 128 SSD from Late 2010
Now the Problem is i love the 13.3" screen its perfect for me and im not  sure if 11 would be enough. But on the other hand i dont know if 2gb  Ram would be enough. I want to watch Videos and do some surfing and  maybe use Word and all that good stuff.
But im not really sure which to get all 3 have their benefits but i love the bigger screen.
I cant afford another one those are my limit. I hope you guys can help  me. Oh and by the way i would like to use the Macbook for around 3 to 4  years because i have to go study abroad.
    Thanks

I have a 2010 Macbook Air with 2GB of RAM and i use it all the time.
I have mountain lion running and i can run several apps at the same time with no issues.
If you do some video editing and heavy photoshop use - i suggest you get the 11 Inch with 4GB of RAM.
if however, you will use it for light duty stuff - the 2GB 2010 13 Inch will do.
see image below of what i have running in the background with my 2010 13 Inch Macbook Air with 2GB of RAM

  • Which MacBook should I get?

    Hi,
I'm deciding to get a MacBook, but I'm not sure which one to get, all I know is that I want one of the 13 inch ones.
I'm going to be use it for things like Skype, Facebook, YouTube, ect... And occasionally go on photoshop, and other program's like that.
I like the MacBook Air because of how thin it is, and that also it has flash storage, meaning it will be quicker to boot up, and load applications, and also will be much quieter than normal laptops. And also that the screen resolution is better that the Pro's.
I like the MacBook Pro because it is I think 2.4 GHz, £99 cheaper than the Air, but I'm not too keen oh how big it is, and that it's not flash storage.
What do you think would be better for me? And why?
Also just to let you know I'm 16 and in school.
    Thanks :)

a macbook pro is more powerful and upgrading the ram and hard drive is very easy.  You can order a MacBook Pro with a regular hard drive and upgrade to flash storage at a later date when solid state drives drop in price.

  • Which iPod should I get?

I am currently using a 5th generation iPod classic and the battery has gotten very bad, as it won't hold a charge longer than 4-and-a-half hours. So, I am faced with a few options here:
    1. Buy a 2nd Generation Shuffle ($79)
    2. Send in current iPod for a new battery ($79)
+- the current iPod has two scratches on the screen+
    3. Send in current iPod for a refurbished iPod ($140)
    4. Buy an iPod Nano ($150)
I am also planning on buying an iPhone either this summer or next summer (the 3rd generation or the 4th generation). The new iPod from the list above would have to last until either summer.
Thank you for reading this, I need a new iPod, but there are so many options, I wanted to take this to the community.
    -Matt

    1. The 2nd gen iPod shuffle costs $49 for the 1GB model ($39 on Apple's refurb page). The new iPod shuffle is 3rd gen. A shuffle will not take the place of an iPod that has a screen and can play video.
I was referring to a 2GB shuffle that can still be found on Amazon and at Best Buy.
Although now looking back on the subject, a shuffle would be a major difference then what I am used to.
I will, however, look into those websites that I can use to repair my current iPod. One of the scratches is fairly deep and I'm unsure if that scratch removal kit would get rid of it.
I also remembered that I do have an old 2nd generation iPod Nano and I could use that for the time of being, until I can repair my current iPod or buy an iPhone.
    3. Send in current iPod for a refurbished iPod ($140)
You don't get to choose to replace your iPod if only the battery is bad.
    Assuming you have the 5th gen iPod video with 60 GB;
If only the battery is bad, it will be replaced for $59.
If the hardware other than the batery is bad, it can be replaced for $149
I have a 30 GB model. I called Apple Technical Support and I was told that I can send my iPod in for a new battery ($59*), or just send it in for a refurbished model ($149).
*I can't quite remember what she said, but it was between $60 and $70.
I am also planning on buying an iPhone either this summer or next summer (the 3rd generation or the 4th generation).
The current iPhone is the 2nd gen. It is called 3G because it uses the +3G wireless network+. So if there is a new one introduced this summer, it will be the 3rd gen iPhone. Apple will not necessarily introduce a new iPhone every summer.
I know the current iPhone 3G is only the 2nd generation; I was talking about the new iPhone. I was just making an assumption that a new iPhone was being released this summer, since Apple tends to update their products annually and the iPhones have been released around July. :P
Thank you guys for the helpful input! I will soon figure something out based on your suggestions!
