Which iPod version to get?

I'm thinking of getting a nano and giving my ipod touch to my brother, but the question is, what version should I get?
I am looking for:
- Long battery life.
- Ability to disable motion sensor, or no motion sensor (would make adjusting volume while listening in bed rather annoying to manage)
- Search feature
- On-the-go playlists
- In "All songs" after choosing an artist, it should order songs by albums and then by track number (ipod touch did not do this, ipod nano gen2 did).
- Should be able to be used as a disk drive on computers without iTunes installed
- Should fulfil all of the above criteria, not just "most".
I don't know for certain, but I'm fairly sure that turning a 5th-gen ipod nano on its side while it is playing a song will turn on CoverFlow, which is not what I want at all. If it's anything like the ipod touch and can't be disabled, then the 5th-gen ipod nano is definitely out of the question - can anyone recommend which generation I should choose?

I don't have my *nano 5g* here to try it, but according to the user guide, you can disable Cover Flow from the Settings menu (Settings - General - Rotate: select Cover Flow or Off).

  • Which ipod WILL i get?

last week i sent my 3rd gen 40gb ipod in to apple because of the battery issue. will apple send me a new/refurbished 3rd gen 40gb? or something newer? it doesn't really make sense to send another of the same ipod when it will just have another battery failure in the future.

Here is a video on youtube which discusses the return process of your original Nano:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo4Lg0ToVlU .
Apple's customer care representative shared with me that they are putting the 1st generation Nano back into production for a limited time so it is not likely you'll get the newest Nano.

  • Which iPod should I get?

I am currently using a 5th generation iPod classic and the battery has gotten very bad, as it won't hold a charge longer than 4-and-a-half hours. So, I am faced with a few options here:
    1. Buy a 2nd Generation Shuffle ($79)
    2. Send in current iPod for a new battery ($79)
+- the current iPod has two scratches on the screen+
    3. Send in current iPod for a refurbished iPod ($140)
    4. Buy an iPod Nano ($150)
I am also planning on buying an iPhone either this summer or next summer (the 3rd generation or the 4th generation). The new iPod from the list above would have to last until either summer.
Thank you for reading this, I need a new iPod, but there are so many options, I wanted to take this to the community.

    1. The 2nd gen iPod shuffle costs $49 for the 1GB model ($39 on Apple's refurb page). The new iPod shuffle is 3rd gen. A shuffle will not take the place of an iPod that has a screen and can play video.
I was referring to a 2GB shuffle that can still be found on Amazon and at Best Buy.
Although now looking back on the subject, a shuffle would be a major difference then what I am used to.
I will, however, look into those websites that I can use to repair my current iPod. One of the scratches is fairly deep and I'm unsure if that scratch removal kit would get rid of it.
I also remembered that I do have an old 2nd generation iPod Nano and I could use that for the time of being, until I can repair my current iPod or buy an iPhone.
    3. Send in current iPod for a refurbished iPod ($140)
You don't get to choose to replace your iPod if only the battery is bad.
    Assuming you have the 5th gen iPod video with 60 GB;
If only the battery is bad, it will be replaced for $59.
If the hardware other than the batery is bad, it can be replaced for $149
I have a 30 GB model. I called Apple Technical Support and I was told that I can send my iPod in for a new battery ($59*), or just send it in for a refurbished model ($149).
*I can't quite remember what she said, but it was between $60 and $70.
I am also planning on buying an iPhone either this summer or next summer (the 3rd generation or the 4th generation).
The current iPhone is the 2nd gen. It is called 3G because it uses the +3G wireless network+. So if there is a new one introduced this summer, it will be the 3rd gen iPhone. Apple will not necessarily introduce a new iPhone every summer.
I know the current iPhone 3G is only the 2nd generation; I was talking about the new iPhone. I was just making an assumption that a new iPhone was being released this summer, since Apple tends to update their products annually and the iPhones have been released around July. :P
Thank you guys for the helpful input! I will soon figure something out based on your suggestions!

  • HT3204 Why can't I update my ipod version 2.2 to version 4.2? I have an updated version of Mac Os snow leapord, an updated version of iTunes but I  am still getting an error message. I have a cart of 30 ipods and none of them will update.

I am trying to upgrade an ipod cart of version 2.2 ipods to 4.2 so that I can download apps that
require this version. When I try to update any of the ipods I keep getting an error message that
culminates with an error -1. I cannot believe that they all have hardware errors. Any ideas of what to
try next? I have an updated copy of Snow Leopard with all current updates and an updated version
of iTunes with all current updates.

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

Be sure to do a backup before updating as protection. Photos should
be synced with your computer, music should be in iTunes, documents
should be backed up on your computer as should contacts in whatever
program you use on your computer. You should already have backups
of your important information to prevent loss in case of theft, crash,
physical damage. The question is not if your hard drive will crash but
when, and you iPhone is not a backup device nor fit for the only
source of any document, picture, music, movie, contact or otherwise
    irreplaceable information.

I was refering to the "sample rate", normally 44.1 KHz, the iPod might not be able to play tracks with a non-standard rate. Otherwise I'm not sure what the issue might be.

  • I am contemplating replacing my old Ipod with a 8gb touch which supposedly holds up to 1760 songs. In my ITunes library the average size of a 12 song album is 300mb which means I can get 27 albums x 12 songs is 324 songs. Where am I going wrong here?

There is about 6.9  GBs of free space on an 8 GB Touch for data storage. That translates to roughly 23 of your average albums.
Holds up to 1760 songs is based on the size of an average track which is about 3 to 4 MBs, whereas your albums have tracks averaging more like 25 MBs per track. I sort of doubt your average album holds what would be about 5 hours.

  • I am trying to update an ipod version 2.2 with itunes but I keep getting an error (-1).  Is this an hardware issue according to Apple and if so is there any way to fix this.?

I am trying to update an ipod version 2.2 with itunes but I keep getting an error (-1).  Is this an hardware issue according to Apple and if so is there any way to fix this.?

    Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
If you disabled yuor computer's security software then that indicates a hardware problem,
I would say it is not workth fixint your old. likely a 1G. iPOd.

  • Can I get Apps for my Ipod version 3.1.3

    Hello
I have looked for apps for music like garage band, music recording related, then I thought I would just settle for a Uchre game.  I have a very old ipod version 3.1.3 (7E18) .   Thanks TR@aim4you

Sorry to report, Apple is the only place you can get those apps, & Apple are no longer accepting apps with deployment targets earlier iOS versions.
That said, you might try contact the developers of those earlier apps to see what they say.

  • Which flash version is compatible/where do I get it?

Which flash version is compatible with my laptop? Where can I get it?
I have recently restored to factory settings and am not able to play "Gemcraft-Chasing Shadows" although I was ok. It gives the message that it may have stopped working etc.
Please help. That game kept me sane.
    System is:
    *Vista
    *32bit OS
    *celeron 900 processor (2.19 ghz)
    *1 g RAM
    Thanks folks.

You should always use the latest Flash Player.
The following troubleshooting guide might help -- in particular, check out the stuff about disabling Hardware Acceleration:
    Video playback issues
If that works, and you haven't downloaded the latest drivers for your graphics hardware, I'd do that and then enable hardware acceleration again.

  • I have ipod version of 3.1.3 i also download itunes 10.3 but i didnt get updated version in ipod

i have ipod version of 3.1.3 i also download itunes 10.3 but i didnt get updated version in ipod

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; devices running an iOS version prior to 5.0 can't be updated straight from the device, and all devices will be updated to the latest compatible iOS version.
The original iPhone and first generation iPod touch can’t be updated past 3.1.3.
