Which is better as router: snow or express (with show attached by wire)?

OK It seams like lots of people have similar problems but no one has described this exactly:
I have a powerbook with an old style airport card (can't remember if that means g or b) and my wireless network running thru my old 'dual Ethernet/snow' airport base station. My wife has her newer ibook with airport extreme card. We have two airport expresses which were meant to extend the range of the network - but don’t seem to do anything other that allow us to use 'airtunes'.
I often have full bars/signal strength but the Internet connection suddenly drops off and just as suddenly comes back on again. And again. And again. (The 'show time connected' time disappears and then re-appears - but the time connected does not start again at zero)
This does not happen with my wife’s ibook.
I have done a hard reset on all airports and reconfigured the netwpork and still this happens.
Would I get a better overall network (strength and stabitity) if I used the express as the router and attached the snow base station by wire?
Does anyone know if there are specific compatibility or set-up issues with our specific set of equipment?
Do I need a new airport card perhaps?
Please help - its driving me carzy

Hi Hangingbyathread,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am going to try to help you with your Airport Problems. Alright, I am guessing you have a snow base station that it is 802.11b. You can not use the Airport Express to extend the network because the original airport doesn't have WDS capabilities. In order to use AirTunes you need to have iTunes 4.6 or higher, and the CD from the Airport EX. Here is some more information Airtunes and Airport Support. You might want to select a preferred network. I have many different WiFi networks in my dorm, and I found that I was constantly losing connection because my computer was picking up the strongest network. I am pretty sure you can't upgrade your Airport card because they are totally different. The original card only can pick up 802.11b at 11Mb where as the Extreme card can pick up to 54Mb at 802.11g.
I hope that helps,
Jon 
PS I am pretty confidant in my information but I could be wrong.

  • Which is better A-A or A-S with IPMP link based?

    Hello.
    I'd like to know good configuraion with IPMP link based.
    I know there are 2 options, Active-Active and Active-Standby.
    Which is better?
    Actually I think A-A is better. Because if I use A-S option, you can not see the up status with secondary nic.
    Thank you for your help ;)

  • Which is better ipod touch or airport express?

    hi,
    I'm running itunes from my mac through a standard home hifi unit but want to upgrade my speakers. I'm thinking of buying a set of zeppelin speakers (http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/display.aspx?infid=2466) but as I dont have an ipod was wondering whether to stream music from my mac using airport express or buy an ipod touch.
    Does anyone know if the sound quality is affected using the airport express?
    cheers

    Hi deggie,
    Congratulations for your purchase of Zeppelin, which is a great speaker for iPod and I am going to buy it once it is available in Hong Kong. (I heard it once it a shop in Hong Kong).
    B&W is a great speaker company - with no doubt.
    Does Zeppelin has also an optical input as well?
    My only comments (with my iPod HiFi with airport express) - occasionally the signal did not come too smoothly from my airport express to the iPod HiFi - a kind of influence from other electronic wave e.g. mircowave?

  • Can I set up a second router (extreme or express) with WEP while keeping 802B,G,N on the primary router (TC)

    I have a wireless temperature controller which only uses WEP security. I have my TC configured for 802.11 B,G,N which disables WEP. Can I extend or create a new wireless network which uses WEP while maintaining my current network configuration?

    Yes, this is extremely easy..
    Get a wireless router or AP.. anything cheap will usually be fine.. you don't need fancy. And if it is G or B wireless then a second hand is also fine.
    For a wireless router you can bridge it, if that option is available.. usually not.
    So you do a sneaky work around called wan bypass.
    It is easier to give you actual situation.
    TC running standard IP 10.0.1.1
    Set up the WEP router with IP, 10.0.1.254 (puts it outside the range of dhcp in the TC and will never be used).
    Turn off the dhcp server.
    I do suggest you set a fixed wireless channel,, so it doesn't interfere with the TC.
    eg 1, for 2.4ghz.
    Then plug LAN port of the router to the LAN port of the TC by ethernet.
    Voila, you have a secondary AP and can set poor security on it.
    *** DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON***
    You have just reduced the security of your whole network by creating a loophole.
    I would strongly recommend turn it off when you finished playing on your Wii or whatever ancient device that uses WEP.

  • Which is better, Double Buffering 1, or Double Buffering 2??

    Hi,
    I came across a book that uses a completely different approach to double buffering. I use this method:
    private Graphics dbg;
    private Image dbImage;
    public void update() {
      if (dbImage == null) {
        dbImage = createImage(this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
        dbg = dbImage.getGraphics();
      dbg.setColor(this.getBackground());
      dbg.fillRect(0, 0, this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
      dbg.setColor(this.getForeground());
      paint(dbg);
      g.drawImage(dbImage, 0, 0, this);
    }that was my method for double buffering, and this is the books method:
    import java.awt.*;
    public class DB extends Canvas {
         private Image[] backing = new Image[2];
         private int imageToDraw = 0;
         private int imageNotDraw = 1;
         public void update(Graphics g) {
              paint(g);
         public synchronized void paint(Graphics g) {
              g.drawImage(backing[imageToDraw], 0, 0, this);
         public void addNotify() {
              super.addNotify();
              backing[0] = createImage(400, 400);
              backing[1] = createImage(400, 400);
              setSize(400, 400);
              new Thread(
                   new Runnable() {
                        private int direction = 1;
                        private int position = 0;
                        public void run() {
                             while (true) {
                                  try {
                                       Thread.sleep(10);
                                  }catch (InterruptedException ex) {
                                  Graphics g = backing[imageNotDraw].getGraphics();
                                  g.clearRect(0, 0, 400, 400);
                                                    g.setColor(Color.black);
                                  g.drawOval(position, 200 - position, 400 - (2 * position), 72 * position);
                                  synchronized (DB.this) {
                                       int temp = imageNotDraw;
                                       imageNotDraw = imageToDraw;
                                       imageToDraw = temp;
                                  position += direction;
                                  if (position > 199) {
                                       direction = -1;
                                  }else if (position < 1) {
                                       direction = 1;
                                  repaint();
              ).start();
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              Frame f = new Frame("Double Buffering");
              f.add(new DB(), BorderLayout.CENTER);
              f.pack();
              f.show();
    }which is better? I noticed smoother animation with the later method.
    Is there no difference? Or is it just a figment of my imagination??

    To be fair if you download an applet all the class files are stored in your .jpi_cache, and depending on how that game requests its graphics sometimes they are stored there to, so really if you have to download an applet game twice, blame the programmer (I've probably got that dead wrong :B ).
    But, what's wrong with Jars. They offer so much more.
    No offence meant by this Malohkan but if you can't organize your downloaded files the internet must really be a landmine for you :)
    Personally I'd be happy if I never seen another applet again, it seems java is tied to this legacy, and to the average computer user it seems that is all java is capable of.
    Admitidly there are some very funky applets out here using lots of way over my head funky pixel tricks, but they would look so much better running full screen and offline.

  • Mavericks or Snow Leopard: Which is better?

    Is Mavericks actually better than both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion?

    I was a big fan of Snow Leopard. I watched a few things get botched up in Lion, some of those things get fixed in Mountain Lion which I liked, but I think Mavericks is the most refined version since Snow Leopard.
    Couple of examples, Time Machine is much slower in Snow Leopard than in the later versions. On portables, Mavericks definitely extended the battery life on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Also, Mavericks fixes some multiple monitor issues that had existed for years. I can't name too many whiz-bang Mavericks features that wow you in a demo, but what Mavericks has is the quiet under-the-hood improvements that are genuinely productivity-enhancing and that is why I like it so much.

  • Which is better for Branch Office Cisco ASA or Cisco 1900 router for Branch Office?

    Which is a better solution ?
    Using ASA55XX or 1900 series router for WAN and Internet access for 25 - 100 users?

    Without knowing more about the environment and what the real requirements are, it is difficult to give a really good answer. If your main concern is effective stateful inspection of traffic entering and leaving the site then the ASA is optimized for that. If you want redundancy (active/active or active/standby) then the ASA is better for this. There are other potential requirements which may make the router the better choice:
    - what is the connection to the Internet? If it is Ethernet then either ASA or router will do fine. But if it is something other than Ethernet then you may need the router.
    - is there a need for services such as Policy Based Routing? These are available on the router and not on the ASA.
    - is there a need for load balancing on outbound traffic? This is available on the router and not on the ASA.
    - will there be a need to do routing on the inside network? The range of available options is wider on the router than on the ASA.
    - is there a need to run a routing protocol with the Internet provider? The usual choice for this is BGP and that is available on router and not on ASA.
    So consider these criteria as you make your choice. Or provide more detail about your environment and what your real requirements are and we may be able to give better advice.

  • Which is better OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard?

    What is the difference between the two softwares?
    What Does Each have to offer?
    I have OS X Lion, but I want to know about OS X Snow Leopard.  Is it a good idea to get OS X Snow Leopard if I already have OS X Lion?

    When you buy PC games for mac from the store, on the box it says you have to have snow leopard or later, or downloading a game from Steam,which also says you need snow leopard or higher, and I have lion, will that work on my pc that came with only lion?
    Yes.  You have Lion 10.7, and it says as long as you have at least Snow Leopard 10.6 it will work.  In the future you may see things that say 10.4 or after etc.  Als long as the number of your operating system is the same or higher, it will work.

  • Which yields better quality images?

    Which yields better quality images?
    If I "send" my slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD? Or if I start in iDVD and import a slideshow from iPhoto?

    That’s the same thing.
    The problem is that iPhoto needs to make a movie of the slideshow to export. This inevitably involves compression. Then, when iDVD prepares the movie for burning, it also compresses. Many folks find the quality drop off too great when the material is doubly compressd.
    One solution is to create the Slideshow in iDVD, though that has limitations too - no Ken Burns effect, fo instance. But there’s only one layer of compression.
    Another way is to create the Movie in +as high a quality as possible+. Some ways to do this: Export the slideshow from iPhoto using the new high quality options. Alternatively, use another app that has more export options - PhotoToMovie, Final Cut Express, perhaps even iMovie HD - to get a high quality movie, and so minimise the impact of the compression.

  • Email settings: POP vs. IMAP...Which is better?

    I use my iPhone for work, like many of us do.  I came from a balckberry, so I am use to getting my emails instantly..... I will say that is about the only thing I miss.....
    I can set up my work email as either a pop or imap.  Which is better?  Do they both fetch? I wish the iPhone offered push email (I'm sure I am not the only one).
    thoughts, comments, ideas, sloutions???/

    The only reason push access is supported with every email account accessed with a Blackberry is because every email account is routed through RIM's dedicated email delivery service for the Blackberry which includes some features not available otherwise.
    Different from a Blackberry, the iPhone's Mail app communicates direct with the incoming mail server for an email account - no different from accessing the account with an email client on your computer. The email account must support Push access with the iPhone's Mail app, and that is with an Exchange account, a MobileMe account, and with a Yahoo account created with the Yahoo account preset. A Gmail account can be accessed as an Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail app.

    edison,
    I run without a Virus Smasher Program.  If I am going to download something I run Housecall.  Also I do not use Outlook or Outlook Express for email so I do not get those types of attacks.
    You could try Housecall here:
    Trend Micro's free online virus scanner
    This thing is a browser plugin.  Does not run unless you are on their site. It is Free. It does not take up any recourses.  It is Free. It is always up to date. It is Free. It never expires. It is Free. You never need to register to use it. Oh, and did I mention it is FREE!!!   :D

  • Which is better for the keying (chroma key)..?

    for using chroma key and blue/green screen, which is better, final cut pro or final cut express. Im new with this I dont have either or am familar with either...Also, is dvMatte Pro or whatever from http://www.padd.com/dvg/prod/prod.php?prod=dvmattefcp&view=dvg a plugin for final cut? Does Final cut not already have the keying feature? Why would I need that plugin (if it is a plugin)?

    no matter what you're talking about (except price), FCP is better for everything. basically, FCE is a watered down version of FCP. the differences depend on what you want to do with it. but as far as keying, they are relatively the same. after looking at dvmattepro's site, I can't seem to figure out what it is, but the only conclusion I can come to is a plugin that saves you time keying. yes, keying will take a lot of time in FCE/FCP, and it is tricky to get right, but you don't need anything that final cut doesn't give you. check out apple's product descriptions (and numerous discussions on this forum) for details about FCE vs. FCP, or about keying.

  • Which performs better for windows development, bootcamp or parallels?

    I have an imac at home and am using parallels to host a w7 vm, wherein I do some web and db development.  It is quite sluggish at times.  I think i may need to tweak the config to perhaps allocate more ram to it but i'm not sure.  I just picked up a macbook pro gen2 i7 and before I install a w7 vm or parttition i was wondering which is better, parallels or bootcamp?  I do like the interactivity that parallels gives me with respect to files between the w7 vm and lion, but am wondering it that is perhaps the achilles heal when it comes to performance.
    what's the preferred route by other developers out there?
    Thanks!

    that's what i thought.  thanks for confirming.  it sounds like i might be able to use parallels ALSO later on to access the windows bootcamp partition, based on reading another thread.

  • Airport Express with D-Link router?

    I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
    I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
    The few that are known to work are:
    o another Airport Express Base Station
    o 802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
    o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54
